Since Selena’s passing, the artist has been the basis of numerous musicals and other productions, including a portrayal by Jennifer Lopez in the hit 1997 hit movie Selena. Ski Apache brings some new vibes to the Sacramento mountains this summer with the Wind Rider Music Fest. Headliners include Matisyahu on Saturday, June 20, and Slightly Stoopid Sunday, June 21. Other acts include Southern California-based reggae/dub band Stick Figure, surf/rock band The Expendables, local favorite Homegrown Boyz, and eclectic Jones and Miles. Rick Trevino

Saturday, June 27 at 8pm During the mid-’90s, Rick Trevino emerged as one of the first popular Hispanic singers in country music. Beginning in 1994, he racked up several hits over the next few years thanks in large part to his Garth Brooks-inspired blend of new country and album rock. Born into a musical family—his father was a member of a local Tejano group—Trevino spent his childhood listening to piano superstars like Elton John and Billy Joel. In 1993, he released his first album, the Spanish-language Dos Mundos. It was accompanied by a single release of “Just Enough Rope,” which was the first traditional country single to be released in both Spanish and English. In 1994, Trevino hit the Top 40 with “Honky Tonk Crowd,” “She Can’t Say I Didn’t Cry,” and “Doctor Time.” Trevino’s second album, Looking for the Light, was released in 1995 and included the Top 10 hit “Bobbie Ann Mason.” Since then he has released two other albums and is now touring the U.S. to serenade young and old alike, including at one show only at San Felipe Casino on June 27. Born in Inglewood, California, she honed her talent as a singer and dancer in high school. As luck would have it, Burnett was looking for a young actress to play her sister on a new variety show. The rest is history. Premiering in the fall of 1967, The Carol Burnett Show launched Lawrence’s career as an actress, singer, and comedian. All total, she spent 11 eleven years on the show, earning five Emmy nominations and one Emmy

Discipline. It’s the key to success in life, in work—and in the casino. For instance, when it comes to poker, unless you’ve got two strong hole cards in Hold’em—and we are talking a pair, ace with a face card, two highranking suited cards, or two unsuited high rankers—get out, and get out now. Because every gaming wizard on the planet preaches that poor poker players get into way too many hands. It’s a fact. Your chances of improving on your two hole cards are less than 45 percent. That’s pre-flop. When you do get a dynamite start, make the other players pay to see them. You know, many, many hands are won not by players holding the strongest five cards but by the better players holding out. In other words, they are not obligated to reveal their winning hands. Doesn’t that just kill you, especially when you threw away a hand you know would have creamed him? You’ll never know. So, what’s the answer? Start with teaching yourself the rules and the nuances of the game. Discover if you have tells and then work like a rented mule to rid yourself of those tells. Next, study the faces of the other players. Instead of looking at the flop, look at the players around the table. See how they react to the three cards— do they seem pleased or dismayed? And when you fold, don’t check out. Stay focused and observe what the other players are doing. Which one fiddles with their chips, which one drums his fingers on the felt before he jumps up with a raise? Study and learn. Learning leads to becoming a disciple, and a disciple never strays from the path, never says, “I got a hunch, I’m gonna keep my pair of eights together.” What, are you nuts? No, don’t do it. Always split a pair of eights in blackjack, regardless of what the dealer shows. So, you might ask, can I apply this same discipline to video poker? Of course! If you are a smart, disciplined poker player, then video poker is your game, whether you choose Jacks or Better, Deuces Wild, Double Bonus Poker, or Double Double Bonus. Blackjack Player Robbed of his Cash Winnings — How Will You Handle Yours?

According to a recent article in the New York Daily News, two men in their mid-20s followed a Philadelphia casino-player to his home and robbed him at gunpoint of the $13,000 he had won at blackjack that evening. But the thieves pushed their luck when they also stole the man’s cell phone. That allowed Philadelphia police to track them down—at the same casino, no less, to which they returned to try their luck with the stolen money! So why was the player carrying so much cash to begin with? Most casinos try to pay winners in cash, in part to keep things simple, but also to entice winners to go back and gamble with their winnings. However, if a big winner requests a check or wire transfer to their bank account, most casinos will honor the request—although what constitutes a “big win” varies among casinos, and some may charge for the bank transfers. When Casino Entertainer asked some local casino managers about their “secure payment” procedures, they all said that their casinos will arrange for their security personnel to escort winners to their vehicle if requested. However, some casino employees were not aware of the safer option to issue

a check or bank transfer instead of paying cash. Billy Prevetti writes this month to “play disciplined.” We also strongly urge players to “play safe.”

As I point out in Cutting Edge Blackjack, casinos actually do players a favor by requiring player cards to be placed facedown on the table when standing at single- and double-deck games—if you know how to interpret those cards. The facedown cards visually tip you off to what card mix is on the table that will make your card strategy decisions that much easier— again, if you know what you’re seeing. That’s where my methods come in. They took years to refine, but now they’re available to you. To confound card counters, casinos changed the game of blackjack to require players to place their first two cards facedown on the table when standing at single- or double-deck game tables. With less information, players couldn’t make precise card moves. That was true for 40 years, from 1962 until 2002, when the first edition of Cutting Edge Blackjack was published, introducing my historic breakthroughs for identifying those cards. Now, the serious player who wants to win to the max has no excuse not to know, with a great degree of accuracy, what those facedown cards are. However, since my discoveries take up two chapters and

57 pages, there’s no way to cover this in detail in a column. I can give you a few tips, though. First, understand that I’ve identified a number of different categories of player facedown cards. Each has a different composition, based upon what players tend to stand on in every card situation. My research, in other words, began with a statistical analysis of all the player hands typically stood upon in each situation. Then I had to formulate methods to deal with each reality. Fortunately, I was able to come up with an ingenious and rather easy system for advantage players that is also highly accurate. Furthermore, I was able to distill these methods in a chapter of general conclusions for all other players. Even if you start by learning a portion of what I have to offer, that will provide you with all the more profits at the end of the day. Everyone should be able to easily understand the card example shown here. This is one of the more obvious situations you’ll encounter. The dealer has a high up card and the four players ahead of you have stood on their first two cards (I call these First Category facedown hands). You’ve got a horrible hand— the worst, a 16-pointer. If the casino allowed surrender, basic strategists would do so (folding their hand and keeping half their bet). However, that’s not smart here. Why? My studies show that absolutely none of these cards is a 2 through 6.

Why is that helpful? You need a 2 through 5 (or an ace)—most of those cards—to make your hand. (So they have not been over dealt; instead they are overdue.) Plus, my research shows that 33 percent of First Category hands vs. a high dealer card are pairs of 10s. And more than 70 percent have two high cards (8s through 10s). So at least three of the four hands you see contain two high cards. (Cards that would bust you, cards you don’t want.) Therefore, you should hit your 16-point hand here. The table has a higher-thannormal proportion of high cards. Low cards—which are what you want—are statistically overdue. Simple example, but my method covers all situations—simple through challenging. Players stand more frequently vs. the dealer’s low up cards, so that’s where it’s more challenging. However, here’s one specific Second Category facedown tip: players’ facedown cards are always two low cards when they’ve stood after taking one or more hit cards vs. low dealer up cards. We’ve only scratched the surface, but as you can see, the more you know, the more you can win.

The Sting Some of these movies make my own list of all-time greats, including, of course, The Sting, a riveting tale of con artists (played brilliantly by Paul Newman and Robert Redford) who set up a corrupt businessman (played by Robert Shaw) in a Depression-era horserace betting sting operation. Casino, starring Robert DeNiro, was also compelling, but far too violent for my taste. Ocean’s Eleven was likewise excellent, but had a plot that was tough to follow. In Vegas Vacation, Chevy Chase takes his family on a memorable, and hilarious, trip to Sin City. In my opinion, it is one of the best of the Vacation installments in the National Lampoon series. What really surprised me, however, was to see Owning Mahowny ranked at number six. It just happens to be my favorite gambling-themed movie of all time. Owning Mahowny is about the dark side of gambling, based on the true story of a 24-year-old banker from Toronto, Canada (Dan Mahowny in the film), who embezzled $10.2 million in 1982 to feed his gambling habit. Inspired by Gary Ross’s award-winning 1987 book, Stung, the movie stars the

As the world of casino gambling is portrayed in its darkest, most predatory light, so too is the world of banking presented in an oddly similar way. Mahowny’s activities eventually lead to the discovery of his embezzlement and his apprehension by the authorities. There’s a scene near the conclusion of the movie when he is asked to rate the thrill of gambling on a scale of 1 to 100. Mahowny answers “100.” When asked to rate the biggest thrill outside of gambling he answers “20.” “Can you live on 20 percent?” he is asked. It’s a good question.
