Gala Knörr Serra Born in Vitoria-Gasteiz (1984) Gala Knörr is a young artist of Spanish Basque-German origin living between her home in Spain, and her heart in Paris. Her works, in the words of K Records founder and underground icon of american music Calvin Johnson, are “illustrations to accompany a life on the outside of bureaucracy, others might see it as the doodles of a mad youth intoxicated by Spring”.

CM: Tell us something about you: I’m an artist & illustrator based in Chicago. I show my work in group & solo showings around the US & Canada, and do illustration work for magazines, bands, authors, and publishing companies, as well as private commissions.
When I’m not painting or drawing, I like to drink co-ffee, play my guitar, dream of the ocean, read, travel to distant lands, eat good food, and take pictures. Carpacciomagazine 39

CM: When and how did you start drawing? What are your favorite media and why? I’ve been drawing & painting for as long as I can remember. My friends and I used to make our own magazines when we were little kids. When I went to college, I started doing backdrops for theatrical productions, and costume design, and I got more into painting then. I started working more seriously on my own work once I was a few years out of school. I love working with gouache, and I also really like using ink pens. CM: Where do you find inspiration? What are your influences and other artists you like? I get a lot of inspiration from my dreams. Most of my images come to me in quick flashes, and I write them down as Carpacciomagazine 41
soon as I can so I don’t forget them before I have a chance to draw them out. I’m influenced by japanese pop art, street art, and illustration. I love looking at patterns in architecture & nature, too. CM: If you can’t draw, what would you do? (what 42 Carpacciomagazine
do you like to work...) I’m really interested in all things related to natural healing -yoga, ayurveda, meditation... I would love to do work in this area. I also always wanted to be a singer in a band. Or maybe a food critic or travel writer. I think that would be pretty amazing Carpacciomagazine 43
CM: How do you see yourself in ten years from now? Are you working on a future project? I hope to have written & illustrated some children’s books & be continuing to work on growing with my artwork and within myself. I would really like to do some more collaborations with other artists / writers / musicians, and I’d also love to do more murals / street art. I hope I’m living by the ocean and / or mountains, and I hope I’ve gotten a whole lot of traveling in! Right now I’m working on some ideas for a storefront I’m painting here in Chicago in August, and I just hung a new solo exhibition in Portland. 44 Carpacciomagazine

CM: Do you have any advices for new emerging artists? (or/and) Do you want to add anything? I’m still a new artist myself, so I’m not sure I know the answers to anything, but I do believe strongly that persistence & hard work pay off. And I also would say to really put yourself out there, even if you’re insecure about your work. We are often our own harshest critic, so try to be kind to yourself & just do the work that feeds your heart.
