A big welcome to the 2016 Rugby Festival of Culture as it returns to Rugby town centre from Friday 1st to Sunday 17th July. The festival, supported by Rugby First and Rugby Borough Council, continues to go from strength to strength and we hope that within this guide you will find something of interest for you, your friends and family! Many of the events are free but where booking is required you will need to book early to avoid disappointment! Take time to look through the guide – there’s plenty inside. Absolute Bowie are Europe’s Finest David Bowie Tribute. The five piece has toured all over Europe for the last 8 years, faithfully performing the music of David Bowie with uncanny accuracy. making a huge collage of a peach. It will feature in the world premiere performance, by young people from Northlands Primary and Dunchurch Infant Schools, of original songs inspired by the Roald Dahl story ‘James and the Giant Peach’. Acclaimed documentary filmmaker Davis Guggenheim presents this touching portrait of the teenage girl who was targeted by the Taliban. Following on from the successful 2015 adaptation of Mr Stink, (which David Walliams described as “Magnificent!”), Heartbreak Productions returns this summer with the theatrical premiere of “Ratburger”, adapted for the outdoor stage. Toad, as they go on adventures along the riverbank and through the countryside. Not everything in the Wilde Wood is as it should be though. Soon they discover a terrible plot from the Chief Weasel to take Toad Hall for himself. In order to stop him, they’ll have to work together to stop the villainous weasels from taking control. Filled with larger than life puppets, songs, dances, interactive sets and a huge heap of adventure, ‘Wind in the Willows’ is sure to delight audience of all ages. of appearances at the South Bank and Wigmore Hall in London and at the Vienna Musikverein and made recordings for Warner and Signum Classics. ‘ALL PURSED UP’ - TEA-TIME WITH SHAKESPEARE ‘All Pursed Up’, a beautiful and unique exhibition,
previously displayed at the Globe Theatre, London: embroidered bags to reflect the characters of Shakespeare’s heroines. We are delighted to welcome the artist, Ann Rogers, now a Rugby resident, to explain how her work illustrates Shakespeare’s art, and his message about the dramatic presentation of women in his age and for all time. Also live music from The Spackling Band, outstanding professional musicians playing music with an Irish Celtic flavour.

In Gyles Brandreth’s case it’s tears of laughter as the former MP and Government Whip, regular on Just A Minute and longest surviving member of the Countdown team, takes us on a rollicking roller-coaster ride around his amazing world of words. Host of Radio 4’s Wordaholics, a reporter on The One Show, a survivor on QI, Room 101 and Have I Got News for You, Gyles Brandreth has been fascinated by words since he could walk – and talk. In his new show, Word Play, and the book that goes with it, with words to make you laugh (and even cry) and stories from his years in politics and entertainment, Gyles comes to Rugby to celebrate a lifetime’s love of language.
