“We started a tuition centre in Bromsgrove in September 2013 and within a few months we were teaching 30 children. We’ve just opened another centre in Redditch and we’re really excited about what the future will bring.”

“Genie gives you a programme of support that’s tailored for you as an individual. You have freedom and control over your own teaching strategies, but there are robust systems and parameters in place that are designed to help you succeed.

Ben Collard, Genie franchisee.

You’re not expected to feel your way alone – you’re given as much guidance as you need.”

“The opportunity with Genie came at just the right time in my career. I’d been working at a local primary school for eight years and I was desperate for something different. Too much of my contact time was being eroded by red tape and constant changes and I felt like I was losing sight of why I started teaching in the first place.

I have tremendous career satisfaction – I absolutely love what I do. Although I’m running my own centres, I’m part of an established educational framework and there’s a network of professionals that’s there to help & support me when I need it.”

“We teach in groups of six which gives us plenty of time to build a real rapport with the children. Small group teaching is also a highly effective way of helping children succeed with their learning. Genie’s philosophy matched my own ideologies about teaching, and I started to get excited about being able to make decisions for the children.”

“I’m still teaching in a school a few days a week – I wanted that security while we were getting established – but I certainly won’t need to do it forever.”

If you want to teach but you’re not happy in your current role, then there is an alternative to teaching in a school. It’s a surprising statistic but, according to a poll of NASUWT members in 2013, 54% of teachers have considered leaving the profession. Many of them still want to teach – they’re just unhappy about their own personal circumstances. If you’ve qualified as a teacher, then the chances are you already have an excellent set of skills that could help you run your own successful tuition centre. You can still help children to learn - but you can also be your own boss, match or exceed your current income, employ other dedicated teachers and have more time to spend with your own family.

Genie Tutors can provide all the support you need as long as you’re motivated, adaptable and dedicated to providing a high standard of teaching. Who are we? We’re educational professionals and we’ve been involved in all areas of education – primary, secondary and special needs. Some of us have held senior leadership roles or roles within local authority education departments. Many of us also have commercial expertise – we’ve run our own businesses and we know what’s involved. We offer great opportunities for qualified teachers, private tutors and business people with a passion for delivering high quality, effective education.

If you’re a talented and dedicated teacher, then you’ll already have skills that will prove invaluable when it comes to running your own tuition centre.

What’s the best location for your centre? Your choice of venue is all-important. We can help you find one and even help you negotiate on the terms. And we can advise on effective local marketing opportunities so that you can promote your centre effectively.

Communication, resilience, empathy, organisational skills, time management, the ability to manage difficult situations – these can all help you make a real success of running your own business. But there are a number of things you need to consider before making your decision. Do you want to go it alone or be part of an established tuition centre network? As a Genie franchisee, you’ll have access to proven systems that give structure and support; in real terms, that gives you more security and allows you to focus on creating the educational environment you want to achieve. How many pupils will you need in order to make your tuition centre viable? According to a survey for the Sutton Trust, in some parts of the UK 40% of parents send their children to a private tutor. But what about in your area? We’ll get involved at the crucial planning stage and help you research your local market to make sure your business is going to be viable. Armed with this information, we can use the right strategies to get your centre up and running.

Who can you speak to before you decide? The people who run our centres are experienced, helpful and full of good advice. Many of them have made similar decisions to the ones you’re facing and they’re only too willing to share their experiences. Contacts like these are invaluable when you’re thinking about starting your own business.

Once you’ve made your decision, we’re here to provide ongoing and proactive support to make sure you’re successful. A comprehensive induction programme gives you access to extensive educational and commercial expertise that will help you set up and run your own Genie centre. Regular local workshops and a national annual conference are perfect opportunities for you to meet other owners and learn best practice in a number of areas, from day-to-day operations and customer service to sales, marketing and accounting. We take the pain out of finding business systems and suppliers; from day one, we’ll set you up on our IT and accounting systems and you’ll have online access to a full suite of marketing materials so you only have to pay for print. In fact, you’ll have access to a whole range of systems that are designed to help you succeed, save you time and money and increase your productivity. We provide effective business coaching and a toolkit specifically designed to help you grow. And if and when you decide to employ your own tutors, we’ll give you as much help and advice as you need. Because education is constantly evolving, we keep up-to-date with developments to make sure that the tuition we provide always meets current needs and demands. And of course, we’re here whenever you need to talk, ask questions or if ever you feel there are any areas where you need specific support. One of the best things about becoming a Genie franchisee is that you are instantly part of a supportive team, a team that’s there to help and advise on any part of your new centre. Everyone’s situation is different – and that’s why we’re so flexible in the support we provide.

“I’m fulfilling my career ambitions, earning enough to support my family and managing my time better. Best of all, I’m no longer stressed. It’s the best decision I ever made.” Before I started my own centre, I had three teaching jobs and was running myself ragged just to make ends meet. I desperately wanted to run my own tuition centre but the options I’d explored weren’t financially viable. When I came across Genie and went to see one of their centres in operation, I signed up immediately. The support you get from Genie is fantastic; there’s an initial three day training course that covers everything you need to know and they’re really proactive, especially when you first start up because that’s when you need it the most. I now have six people working for me; they’re great teachers and they’re contributing to the success of my centre.” “When I started, I gave myself two goals: to stop working in a school, and to run my own centre without having to work full time hours. I hoped that I’d be able to achieve both within three to four years. Actually, I got there within eighteen months.” Julie Hemmings, Basildon

“My tuition centre gives me what I want in terms of income and lifestyle.” “When I went back to teaching after having a break to bring up my children, I found it really hard to get back on to a permanent contract. While I was doing a mixture of supply teaching and tutoring, I found Genie and started working for them as a tutor. The idea of setting up my own centre really appealed, so I began on a very small scale, just two nights a week initially. Different people have different aspirations and I’ve grown to a level that works really well for me. Some of the children I teach have been with me right from the very beginning so I’ve watched them grow up and that’s a real privilege. “We have freedom over how our centres are run, but there are weekly meetings and centralised support systems so you always feel as though you’re part of a wider organisation. It’s very organised.” Jo Harvey, Solihull

If the freedom of running your own tuition centre appeals to you, fill in the application form attached and post it to: Genie Tutors Office 25, Greenbox, Westonhall Road Bromsgrove, Worcestershire B60 4AL Or download the Word document at: www.genietutorsfranchise.co.uk/appform/ and email the completed form to us at opportunity@genietutors.co.uk. This gives us useful information about your background, your career and your skills and we can then call you to have an informal chat about why you’d like to run your own tuition centre. We’ll also invite you to a more formal meeting where we can discuss your long term goals and aspirations and you can see a Genie centre in operation. Before you make any decisions about your future, we’ll conduct research into your local area to ensure that your centre can be a viable business and give you forecasts and projections so you’re armed with as much information as possible.

If you decide to go ahead, you can launch your own centre for as little as £500. We like to keep things as simple and as cost-effective as possible. There’s no obligation to take out an expensive lease on a property; many of our franchisees work successfully from local community halls and play centres that are hired on extremely flexible terms. But we do offer full support from the moment you make your decision and you’ll become part of a network of educational professionals that shares your passion for teaching.
