In-Demand Career Spotlight
Cameron Blake, M&D Mechanical Contractors Cameron Blake, a plumber for M&D Mechanical Contractors, is where he is today through a unique training program option offered by the company. He started a week after graduating from high school as a helper for M&D. He joined the plumbing training program and spent four years training to become a journeyman plumber. He will take the test to be a journeyman plumber soon.
“I would work in a hands-on environment during the day with a licensed plumber at M&D and then one night a week I would go to school. M&D reimbursed me for my tuition, and I would have handson learning and formal education through the classes,” he says.
He has been working on a project for a company in Huntsville where he does hanger work, piping, and setting and installing fixtures.
When asked what led him to this field, Cameron said that he got the opportunity to work in the machine shop while in high school at the Limestone County Tech School. He enjoyed this kind of work, and when a representative with M&D came to their class, he expressed an interest in getting on with the company.
Cameron enjoys spending time with his wife and supporting Tennessee Football. He sees his career field growing due to the number of older journeyman plumbers that will be retiring soon. “People have the wrong concept of what this field means,” he says. With growth rates in the double digits in the state and across the country, it is a field that offers the opportunity for young people to get a good job right out of high school and grow in the field.
He recommends that students interested in plumbing, or the construction trades in general, take career tech classes in high school to gain hands-on experience. He says, “You need to be willing to learn and soak up as much as you can. The more you know, the more helpful you are.”
