Fair notes tailings ponds will always be a part of water-based extraction in the oil sands. “People need to understand that we can make the tailings ponds smaller and we can make fewer of them, but we’re not going to get rid of them. They’re an essential part of the oil sands recycling operations. They enable the oil sand plants to recycle in excess of 85 per cent of the water used in the extraction process”. While details are still being worked out, efforts are under way to bring the OSTC’s progressive tailings technology into the COSIA structure (see page three) over the next year.
