Remember: Stash it, don’t flash it! Don’t leave your valuables in plain sight. Criminals are looking for something to steal, so don’t give them a target!
Make sure you don’t stop too close to the car in front of you. Leave yourself some room to move in an emergency.

After the driver has left, a stranger approaches the car… The crime… That’s weird. He hit the remote locking button…

…but his car didn’t lock. Is something blocking the signal?

Some criminals are getting more sophisticated. They have special devices that can jam your car’s remote locking signal. Make sure your car is locked before you leave it by manually checking the door. If your remote locking signal isn’t working, play it safe and find somewhere else to park.

Don’t let this happen to you. Be aware of your surroundings and don’t give criminals a chance to strike. Be aware of strangers surrounding you. If you are isolated, you become an easier target.
Try not to leave your back unprotected. Stand against a wall or in a doorway.

This conman is staking out the ATM and targeting unsuspecting tourists.
Do you need some help? South African ATMs are different to the ones overseas.
These guys are partners. They’re working together to scam the tourist.

They want to get a look at his PIN number and maybe even switch his card with a fake or swipe it to make a cloned card.

These con artists pretend to be helpful, especially to tourists. But the first chance they get, they’ll drain your account dry! Don’t accept help from anyone when using an ATM. No matter how friendly or well-dressed they may seem.
Never let anyone learn your PIN number. If the machine swallows your card, contact the bank immediately.

Pickpockets will make up any excuse for body contact so that they can get their hands into your pockets and onto your valuables.
Keep strangers out of your personal space. Don’t let anyone distract you or stop you.
If someone is getting too close for comfort, just keep moving or make some noise to attract people’s attention.

It’s not easy being a criminal in Cape Town anymore. Here’s how you can make their lives even more difficult: stash it, don’t flash it! Don’t leave anything in your car. Criminals will break in to steal just about anything. Even an old pair of shoes.
My last piece of advice is for the criminals out there. Unless you want to end up like this guy, find a new career. And don’t forget, I’m watching you.
