Introduction Argentina’s publishing industry is made up by a few big international companies and by a majority of small and medium-sized publishing houses, which have grown and thrived during the new century’s first decade. These companies, often in joint efforts with prestigious academic institutions, have been concentrating in a field that may not be properly acknowledged from abroad, but that has been producing ever-better results: non-fiction books and essays in different niches and specialties. There is an important, state-of-the-art production of thought about the world’s most urgent issues, like poverty, political crisis, social unbalance and a fair management of the environment. There is, of course, a wide debate about the last military dictatorship and it’s consequences; the uses of memory are, indeed, one of the key aspects of the country’s appearance in Frankfurt. Other historical questions that are central to Latin America, like those revolving around Perón or Che Guevara, are also present. Books about science have been published with great success (like Adrián Paenza’s introduction to mathematics) and of course there is a steady number of texts about psychology and soccer, probably the two greatest ‘national passions’. In this brief catalogue, there’s also room for the arts: music has it’s saying from opera through tango up to rock’n roll; you’ll find painting and design, as well as the best literary criticism of the continent. And one could stretch the concept of art to include some beautiful books about Patagonia and, why not, the art of asado and other cooking… We hope that the following pages will help you see Argentina not only as a provider of wonderful fictions, but as a professional producer of high-quality non-fiction books worth to be read.

EMBANDERADOS - La emancipación de la América del Sur y la razón de los colores y el diseño de sus banderas / WRAPPED IN BANNERS AND FLAGS - The emancipation of South America and the explanations of colors and designs in their banners and flags Saravia, Mariano

ISBN 978-3-939871-18-7 Year of publication: 2010 Abrazos Pages: 340 Format: 21 cm x 15 cm German

The Latin American flags were battered, besmeared and ripped to pieces because powerful foreigners and their flunkies trampled on them, but they still exist and are only waiting to be grasped. This is what this title stands for: The South Americans still may recognize themselves in the colors of their banners and adorn themselves with them. What matters now is to take a look at the past, to re-discover one’s identity and to become aware that they should be united rather than separated from each other. The Argentinean Mariano Saravia wrote a wise and lively chronicle on the origins of the flags of Latin American, just in time for the independence festivities throughout that continent. LOS HIJOS DE LOS DESAPARECIDOS - Reporte de testigos de la dictadura militar argentina / THE CHILDREN OF THE DISAPPEARED - Eye Witness Reports from the time of the Argentine Military Dictatorship Prüfer Leske, Irene

ISBN 978-3-939871-14-9 Year of publication: 2010 Abrazos Pages: 100 Format: 21 cm x 15 cm German 8

The Argentine Military Dictatorship is in many respects related to the German National Socialism and has frequently been compared with it. One striking similarity is that the (approx. 30,000) children of the disappeared in Argentina during the nineteen seventies and eighties suffered a similar tragic fate as the children of the resistance fighters of the “kin liability” imposed by Himmler after the assassination attempt on Hitler on 20 July 1944: They were separated from their families and robbed of their identity. These eye witness reports are authentic documents, which for the first time have been published in German and which must never be forgotten. “Never ever again!” we must repeat after 40 years and again and again in the future: ¡Nunca más!. For the better understanding, the author addad an introduction, an outline of the Argentine history of the 20th century, and an abbreviation index to the eye witness reports. Translated from Spanish by Irene Prüfer Leske.

LO QUE EL HOMBRE HACE AL HOMBRE Ensayo sobre el mal político / CE QUE L’HOMME FAIT À L’HOMME - Essai sur le mal politique / WHAT MAN DOES TO MAN - Essay on political evil Revault d’Allones, Myriam

ISBN 978-950-518-725-6 Year of publication: 2010 Amorrortu editores s.a. Pages: 192 Format: 23 cm x 14 cm CDD: 320.1 Philosophy

In the twentieth century, the “camps” where States and political regimes planned the annihilation of men revealed the “inhuman condition”. The history took the appearance not of fate (as Hegel has announced) but of terror. Hence, the question: ¿Have we witnessed the emergence of the outstanding figure of evil, an evil that shows unprecedented violence and horror? ¿Or are we facing the banality of evil? In order to understand the present of this evil, it is necessary to reopen the past, to go back to the radical evil proposed by Kant, as well as to the bond between the tragedian and the capacity for political institution in Aristotle, and then to reread modern writers such as Hobbes, Schmidt and Strauss. 9

EL PRÓJIMO - Tres indagaciones en Teología Política / THE NEIGHBOR - Three Inquiries in Political Theology Zizek, Slavoj / Santner, Eric / Reinhard, Kenneth

ISBN 978-950-518-388-3 Year of publication: 2010 Amorrortu editores s.a. Pages: 256 Format: 23 cm x 14 cm CDD: 320.1 Philosophy

In this book, three of the most relevant intellectuals specializing in psychoanalysis and critical theory work together to show that the topic of loving our neighbor poses fundamental questions as regards the ethical inquiry, and suggest a new theological configuration of the political theory. “The Neighbor offers a stimulating rethinking of the philosophical problem of the Other. Its combination of Lacanian psychoanalysis with the theological tradition paradoxically develops a welcome materialist alternative to the insipid universalizing reflections on the ethics of the Other which seem to have become current in philosophical circles today” (Fredric Jameson)”.

LA MORAL DE LOS MEDIOS DE COMUNICACIÓN - Sobre el nacimiento de la polis de los medios / MEDIA AND MORALITY On the rise of the mediapolis Silverstone, Roger

In a world of increasing polarization and demonization, the media have a powerful role to play. They can reinforce or challenge that polarization. This book proposes that we should think of the global media as a mediapolis, a single space of political and social communication, in which the basis for the relationships between neighbors and strangers can be either constructed or destroyed. The mediapolis is a moral space, a space of hospitality, responsibility, obligation and judgement.

This interview is also an intellectual biography and an ongoing proposal to escape of the world of “total organization”. A unique opportunity to discover (or to keep on exploring) the wonderful think tank Michel Foucault was.

ISBN 978-987-614-188-8 Year of publication: 2009 Capital Intelectual Pages: 200 Format: 14 cm x 20 cm CDD: 333.91 Science - Environmental Science

Drinkable water has become the strategic resource of the 21st century. It is so scarce that it comprises only 2,5 per cent of the total amount of water on earth. Any source of water that runs out or gets polluted, is lost for ever. The attention focused on oil, in the past and still nowadays, may in the near future turn to water, to the point of transforming it into the cause of serious armed conflicts. Powerful countries are totally conscious of the worsening of this situation in the next decades, with severe droughts, starvation and scarce drinking water. Having depredated their own natural resources, now they put their sight on those regions that still keep theirs. Our survival as communities, and that of the planet, depends on our ability to preserve and protect these sources. 13

LA HISTORIA DESBOCADA - Nuevas crónicas de la globalización / RUNAWAY HISTORY New chronicles of globalization Feinmann, José Pablo

According to the great Argentine writer and philosopher José Pablo Feinmann, “we are in the middle of a runaway history. Facts do not have sense, rationality, dialectic or internal logic either. Heisenberg and his principle of uncertainty take possession of history. There is no truth. Following Nietschze’s sentence (“There are no facts, just interpretations”). History is not predictable. It is dominated by chance and penetrated by uncertainty. It is not dominated by men any more. It is no longer the history of class struggle and the coming of socialism. Neither that of Christ’s martyrdom and humanity’s final redemption nor that of the liberation from all fears and all needs by means of science end economy. It has gone runaway and we not only ignore its course but we fear it.”

In Europe, from the cities, housing, food and plagues during the Middle Age; woodlands and farming and deforestation. In America, references go from the irrigated lands of Teotihuacan and the Maya ecological crisis, to the giant stone heads on Easter Island. The conquest of Central America. An analysis based upon the notion of symbiosis and shared evolution between human societies and ecosystems. LA MODERNIDAD CONTEMPORÁNEA EN AMÉRICA LATINA Domingues, José Maurício

Due to its location in the geographic periphery Latin America has tended to think of itself, in political and social terms, as a limited and downgraded realization of modernity. In order to give the reasons and explanations for this vision, the Brazilian sociologist José Mauricio Domingues dives into the social situation of Latin America and reveals that the main topics relevant to modernity (freedom, equality, justice, nationality, citizenship, solidarity) develop in the region with its own multifaceted and creative dynamics. The evolution of political and social history is very noticeable in the structures and contents of film, and in their advances in the field of audio-visual narration, such as television and digital imaging. In many cases the information contained in movies allow trailing the underlying currents of modern whirlwind. From D. W. Griffith to Lars von Trier or Paul Verhoeven, from communism to neoliberalism, through fascism, the two world wars and arriving at neo-capitalism globalization, this book makes an effort in synthetic understanding that allows both the film student and the general public to get vividly closer to a universe of works and events clinging to the red thread of dialectic interpretation.

With his reflections on the challenges of accepting the dynamics of meaning, the author responds to the question “What does it take to change semiotics for it to continue being effective?”. Because in the confines of the semiotic worlds, at any given moment in history, a social group is able to construct the meaning of the phenomena of its environment, the entropic boundaries are present which will require new semiotics, exceeding the existing ones in their wealth and creativity. This books responds to fundamental research issues such as what is a hypothesis, which is a body of information, when can one say that something is semioti-cally explained, and therefore constitute a valuable tool for deseigning a research project in the area of Social Sciences.

Written from a left-wing position it is probably the most lucid essay ever written about Cuba. It analyzes the revolution from every single aspect, from its beginning to our days, and it shows that the so promoted achievements in, for example, health and education, are not separable from the totalitarian policies carried out by Fidel Castro. It untangles the trap into which a good part of the Left has fallen, that which could be summarized as “yes, but…”; that is to say, the formulae which allows one to rescue some aspects of the revolution and leave for later or to a corner of shadows, its dictatorial nature. Hilb thinks and writes without giving ground to the common places of fierce criticism, which repudiates the Cuban system straightaway, and shows why it is unfeasible, and how that unfeasibility has been constructed. 29

Between 1865 and 1870, Argentina, Brazil and Uruguay held an ignominious war against Paraguay, which resulted in the genocide of a heroic population. The official history of the origins of the Argentinean Nation, influenced by Bartolomé Mitre, key character of the war, characterised this event as a conflict originated to defend the country from the threats of the neighbouring country. However, diverse voices in historiography have revealed an important influence of British diplomacy, which aimed to finish with the last country resisting to financial capital, in the tragedy. León Pomer, renowned Argentinean historiographer, presents in this book the results of an exhaustive investigation that provides evidence to sustain this position.

PIAZZOLLA: LA MÚSICA LÍMITE / PIAZZOLLA. THE LIMIT OF MUSIC Kuri, Carlos

ISBN 978-950-05-1748-5 Year of publication: 2008 Ediciones Corregidor Pages: 320 Format: 14 cm x 20 cm CDD: 781.7 Biography 32

This book explores the aesthetics of Piazzolla’s work, which has created a unique heartbeat of the body and of the city and which cannot be simply explained in that banal way as ‘the evolution of the tango’. A review of his style - a consistent “language” that has crossed different musical styles (Bartók, Bach, Troilo, jazz) with the dramatic pulse of the tango. Among others, the key points discussed here are to demonstrate why Piazzolla’s style is the latest alteration of the gender of tango, to place the limited nature that his music imposes; to locate the elusive but persistent seduction of Piazzolla with jazz or reflect on the encounter of Borges and Piazzolla in the language of our culture.

ISBN 950-9413-99-2 Year of publication: 2004 Ediciones Del Sol Pages: 344 Format: 14 cm x 22 cm CDD: A 864 Art - History, Theory of Art

The renowned anthropologist Adolfo Colombres tries in his book Teoría transcultural del arte to systematically open paths towards an independent visual thought among peripheral cultures. From his point of view, it can be considered an unquestionable merit of the Western civilization to have started thinking about different subjects concerning art and literature defining a systematic discipline called Aesthetics and considering it a legitimate branch of philosophy. However, this did not lead into the creation of an universal theory, comparing its concepts and schemas with those of other people. Aesthetics rather tried to be imposed as a unique discourse, ignoring the “strange” symbolic production. Teoría transcultural del arte tries to build a transcultural theory of art, elaborating an interdisciplinary point of view.

CINE CLÁSICO, EL - Itinerarios, variaciones y replanteos de una idea / CLASSIC CINEMA Itineraries, variations and restatements of an idea Russo, Eduardo A.

ISBN 978-987-500-115-2 Year of publication: 2008 Ediciones Manantial Pages: 200 Format: 17 cm x 12 cm CDD: 791.430 9 Media, Information & Communication Film, History & Criticism

What is classic cinema? This book does not define the classics of cinema neither discusses a canon. While other arts outlined their perceptions of the modern, for several decades cinema established certain ways of showing and narrating on a world scale. Nevertheless, that cinematographic way has manifested itself as very permeable, complex and paradoxical in its structure, as well as especially open to frontier traffic. Those aspects and ways insistently designed as classic are to be revisited today from the perspective of the modern adventure embodied by cinema for over a century now.

Throughout the nineteenth century, philosophical toys promoted and accompanied the development of studies on movement, oscillating between mere curiosity for optical effects and a physiological contention on the workings of the sense of sight. Somehow prevailing, philosophical toys lead to cinema. When captured in its reverse, the cinematographic image reveals an unreconciled character and, therefore, a didactic eagerness that teaches to see everything all over again.

Rethinking the idea of cinematographic language means reconsidering some aspects of cinema history in its gradual combinations: from the original electromechanical and photochemical machine to electronic and digital technologies. This leads us to a reflexion on certain myths, which have marked the history of cinematography machines, and on an idea of staging drawing from the filmmaking practices and experimentation that enable to envision an outlook on the potential of digital film.

ISBN 978-950-15-2395-9 Year of publication: 2007 Javier Vergara Pages: 544 Format: 15 cm x 23 cm CDD: 320.982 Non Fiction

From 1966 onwards Hugo Gambini made an exhaustive research for the section “History of Peronismo” of the famous magazine Primera Plana. During the inquest almost all the people involved were alive. In the interviews freely conducted by Gambini twenty years after the events everyone gave their own version. Though, the conflictive past was still present and nobody dared to say the truth. The situation offered a fascinating challenge for a journalist interested in politics. Based on the analysis of the testimonies, he wrote this essential work about a key period of argentine history.

LOS ÚLTIMOS DÍAS DE EVA / THE LAST DAYS OF EVA Castro, Nelson

ISBN 978-950-15-2415-4 Year of publication: 2007 Javier Vergara Pages: 240 Format: 15 cm x 23 cm CDD: 923 Non Fiction

¿Would the treatment of cervical cancer have saved the life of Eva Perón? The question, as well as many other that will ever remain without answer show that, as Nelson Castro says: “power kills”. Meanness, palace intrigues, hurt vanities, yearning for fame and power surround the behavior of those involved in the case. An absurd intolerance ruined the career of many professionals and kept as “State Secret” the visit of the notorious American surgical oncologist George Pack to Argentina. More than fifty years later, the author conducted a careful research aimed to disclose the wide range of diplomatic and politic interests concerned. The Last Days of Eva Peron is an essential reading to understand an enigmatic chapter of argentine history.

CON EL CHE POR SUDAMÉRICA / TRAVELING WITH CHE GUEVARA - The Making of a Revolutionary Granado, Alberto

ISBN 978-987-1307-14-2 Year of publication: 2008 Marea Editorial Illustrations: yes Pages: 197, Format: 24 cm x 16 cm German, french, english, italian, portuguese, romanian CDD: 923 Biography

This moving memoir recounts an eight-monthlong South American tour that Granado, then a 29-year-old doctor, and Ernesto “Che” Guevara, then a 23-year-old med student, took in 1952. Guevara recounted the trip in his The Motorcycle Diaries, but Granado’s account equally illuminates the roots of Guevara’s revolutionary consciousness. As they travel through poverty-stricken towns in Argentina, Chile, Peru, Colombia and Venezuela, Granado constantly notes how “the injustice of it filled us with hatred”. Granado’s book, which he wrote contemporaneously, perceptively shows how young Guevara was “a doctor who, though brilliant, was trapped in the confines of the medical trade”. “The story of Granado reveals the roots of Guevara’s revolutionary awakening”. On July 7, 1953, Ernesto Guevara, 25-yearold, took a train from Retiro Station in Buenos Aires to set out on what would be his final, decisive trip through Latin America. His travel companion and childhood friend, Carlos “Calica” Ferrer, recounts for the first time the adventures and experiences of those defining months that led the young Ernesto’s transformation into Comandante Che Guevara. As in his first trip with Alberto Granado, this second journey was an encounter with the roots of indigenous America, with the incipient people’s movements and all the beauty and suffering of a continent oppressed for centuries. “It is a pleasing book, rich in anecdotes and stripped of guevarist worship; it’s the story of two friends and their journey”. ISBN 978-950-07-3196-6 Year of publication: 2010 RHM - Sudamericana Pages: 320 Format: 15.5 cm x 23 cm CDD: 927 Biography

Mercedes Sosa. La Negra is the ultimate edition of the only biography of Mercedes Sosa to be written on the basis of her own words. At the age of 67 she decided to tell her life story. Since she was not interested in pretending to be a writer, her biography is a tale told out loud. This is how, for a complex and atypical character, Rodolfo Braceli chose an unusual narrative way. On the one hand, the fine singer’s words form the backbone of this work. On the other, we hear other voices emerging, that of Sosa’s mother and brothers, that of her son and friends.Rodolfo Braceli, a poet, storyteller and journalist, has authored more than twenty books, some of which have been translated into English, French, Italian, and Polish. His interview with Gabriel García Márquez earned him the Pléyade Award. His interviews have been translated into nine languages and published in twenty-three countries. HISTORIA DE UNA BIBLIOTECA (De Platón a Nietzsche) Abraham, Tomás

Historia de una biblioteca recalls a personal story and offers an irresistible prospect. The usual answers become blurred, abolished by an unsystematic rigor that, instead of assigning value as judged by a court, contrasts usages, passions, and textures. In few texts does the idea of book become consolidated with that of library and culture as in Abraham’s. Within each of these concepts, a unique and renewed substance allows us to trace the course of Western philosophy and find its articulation joints in the least expected places. Rafael Di Zeo is the last great “capo” of the gang of hooligans supporting Boca Juniors, the most popular football club in Argentina. Violence is never going to end. And you know why? Because this is a school. It’s something you inherit, that’s what it is.” This is the story of the armed side of the most emblematic group of football supporters in the country. It is a terrifying and fascinating story at once. Gustavo Grabia is one of the main sports journalists in Argentina and knows what goes on behind the scenes in football clubs like no one else does.

These pages gather many of those unforgettable poems… and others that will hold the magic of being read for the first time. Neruda “the chronicler of all things”, as he called himself, sang about love, and also about men, land and poetry… His beautiful words are embellished here with the paintings of an artist full of love for life…This is a book to offer to those who already know Neruda, and those who will discover him, a book to treasure and remember, a book which, perhaps, Pablo Neruda himself would have chosen, as a gift from the poet.
