Byron Region Community College acknowledges and recognises the Bundjalung Nation, the traditional custodians from where we are based. We pay our respects to all of our region’s First Peoples, to their ancestors and Elders, and towards our shared future.

In a time of pandemic: a time of uncertainty and stress; a time of waving through a screen at friends, family, loved ones, colleagues - how much are we changing and adapting, and what is the new normal going to be?

So much of our rich cultural, social and economic life has been restricted and challenged. We know mental health is now more significant than ever. But there are always cracks, as Leonard Cohen says, “where the light comes in”.

In a world that we can still hope for - one of healing, passion, joy, expression and learning - we get a chance to see how we can recreate and refresh ourselves by looking, listening and responding to something new - sometimes something extraordinary. It could be a stimulating read, a wonderful piece of music or simply being out in the beauty of our natural world.

Byron Community College is part of our community fabric. Our organisations have been deeply affected by the current pandemic – but also by the upsetting dysfunctional states of many of our ecosystems and our democracies. Yet many of us are determined to find new ways and things to learn that will nourish ourselves and further benefit an inclusive humanity and healthy planet. After 23 years of overseeing thousands of special learning offerings, I am still inspired by what range of talented and experienced teachers we have. And how overwhelmingly positive the student experience of participating in these courses has been – yes, even changing lives and places forever!

So, I invite you to just take a few moments of your life to browse through this. For instance, considering our safe spaces, check out building an earth oven, or learning lawn bowls from a champion. Or if learning from home is a cool way to go, do a well guided yoga program or lift your income by learning how to sell products online. Then there’s Sourdough Business Pathways, which could help you navigate through tricky times, or longer term, think of our great vocational courses in 2021.

If you also want to keep in touch with what’s coming up or make suggestions, go to our website and subscribe to one of the best newsletters in the Shire.

All the best with your new normal!
