A message from Kim Conchie DL CEO Cornwall Chamber of Commerce Welcome to Cornwall’s Festival of Business – a week-long celebration of business in Cornwall. This is your opportunity to see everything The Duchy has to offer and make new connections to help your business grow. This year, the festival feels extra special, and many people will be dipping their toe back into networking for the first time in over two years. The week’s programme reflects this, and I’m really pleased to see so many events addressing wellbeing and personal growth. All of the events taking place during festival week are aimed at inspiring the business community, facilitating connections and providing information to help Cornwall’s recovery and secure its future. Work your diary around the different events – some are online so you can still join in between meetings. On Monday, Smartline is offering a free online collaborative day workshop to learn the key principles of User-Centred Design and Design Thinking there’s also a tour of a tall ship on offer from Sea Sanctuary, and Budock Vean Hotel’s monthly networking meet-up which is free of charge in celebration of the festival. I will be chairing an online discussion about the Shared Prosperity Fund, and Emerald Thinking will also be online hosting a webinar about what’s to come in web analytics. On Tuesday, there’s a wellbeing event at Heligan, and a coffee, cake and crafts afternoon at Millendreath, Looe. If you’re sticking to online that day, Wildcard is offering some great advice on how to prepare for PR, and business consultant Trevor Lee will be dishing out some top tips. Konnect is running four separate online workshops throughout the day covering company culture, appraisals, female founders and co-leadership. On Wednesday 15th June, Cornwall Chamber, supported by Wildanet, will hold its 12th Business Fair at Falmouth University’s Penryn Campus. We have 68 promotional stands, a large breakfast event sponsored by Coodes, free lunch event and a number of breakout sessions. It’s free to get in and there’s free parking – just turn up and get the ball rolling on new business relationships and collaborations. Thursday is the highly anticipated Finance in Cornwall event, run by PKF Francis Clark in association with British Business Bank. Later in the day, Robert Rush of PFA Research will be joined by the Head of Research at British Chambers of Commerce to discuss what 10-year trends in Cornwall’s economic data tell us about the Duchy’s economy now and opportunities for the future. I am also excited about the Smart Working Revolution event focusing on Predicting the Future of Work, Shaping Culture event and Cornish Lithium presenting Critical Metals and Cornwall’s Industrial Future. On Friday, I’ll be joined by CEO of Cornwall Community Foundation, Tamas Haydu, to discuss Cornwall’s deprivation, generosity and challenges; and CCF’s aims, successes and calls to action for their forthcoming Vital Signs research – we’d love you to join us and learn how you can help. Bringing the week to a close, our fantastic 30 under 30 winners will receive their trophies at a special award ceremony in the beautiful setting of The Alverton Great Hall. I’ve barely scratched the surface on the events taking place during the week, but I hope you’ll turn the page and get your highlighter out to plan how best to spend your time. It’s going to be a busy one!

We have seen the return of our networking events with huge success and the festival of business is a fantastic example of the appetite our county has to build relationships and increase connections.

As an organisation we will continue to reach out to a wider demographic and there are plenty of innovative and exciting plans for the coming year with People, Planet, Progress, Place & Purpose being the guiding principles for Chambers nationally and at the core of what we are looking to accomplish.

Laura Whyte – Managing Director of Whyfield Ltd and Chair of Cornwall Chamber of Commerce It feels as though Cornwall has been very much ‘back to business’ over the last 6 months. The Chamber has continued to evolve and expand, not only in members but in the scope of project delivery and policy exploration, placing ourselves as an organisation not afraid to challenge and collaborate in order to be successful.

The Chamber board is a diverse team who, despite the wide range of backgrounds and experience, all share a common passion for the business community in Cornwall; we feel enormously proud of the team, members and our wider network for their resilience and tenacity over the last 2 years and are hugely invested in what the coming years may bring. The Chamber continues to champion all Cornwall has to offer and recognises the important role we play in connecting and supporting the business population and look forward to sharing in your future achievements and victories.

A message from Helen Wylde, CEO at Wildanet Cornwall Business Fair Wildanet is delighted and very proud to be supporting Cornwall Chamber of Commerce and the Cornwall Business Fair. It’s an event which has become a must-fixture in Cornwall’s business diary, showcasing the best of what Cornwall has to offer and supporting businesses to collaborate, inspire and connect with each other. There is an immense amount of exciting activity taking place in Cornwall, a wealth of talented people, a burgeoning spirit of entrepreneurship and a level of creativity which is a match for anywhere in the UK. Cornwall Business Fair reflects and celebrates Cornwall’s successes and, together with the ongoing work of the Chamber and its partners, brings a focus to how we tap into new ideas and markets, deploy new technology and build the creative and carbon-neutral economy we all want for Cornwall’s future. Our mission at Wildanet, and why as a local company we are so pleased to be sponsoring this event, is to support businesses and communities right across Cornwall with the high speed, reliable broadband they need to maximise these opportunities, achieve their potential and compete on a national and international stage. We all know there are areas of Cornwall which have good digital connectivity but there are also large parts of the county, particularly in rural areas, which do not. That’s simply not acceptable and it is a barrier to social inclusion and business growth. It is the reason Wildanet was formed as a Cornwall-based Alternative Network (Alt-Net) and why our ethos is that no-one should be forgotten or left behind by the digital revolution because of where they live or the standard of service they receive. Wildanet is already investing £50 million in rolling out our own gigabit-capable fibre and wireless network in towns and villages across Cornwall. And we are committed to working with local and central government, businesses and communities to go much further in addressing the digital divide in Cornwall and the South West. We look forward to seeing you all at the Cornwall Business Fair and to working with you in the coming years to help you, your businesses and Cornwall reach new heights.

Helen Wylde, Chief Executive Officer at Wildanet

Cornish broadband provider, Wildanet, is expanding its network bringing superfast and super-reliable broadband to communities and businesses throughout Cornwall, including providing a vital ingredient in the success story of the Cornish Pudding Co. Chamber news As Chair of the British Chambers of Commerce I have the immense privilege of meeting businesses based in every part of the UK, from Inverness to Truro and everywhere in between. The local roots of Chambers of Commerce are unique among business organisations and our strengths are evident in the work carried out by Cornwall Chamber of Commerce, led by Kim Conchie, who do a stellar job of advocating and supporting the diverse range of businesses and sectors that make up the Cornish economy. Our Chambers do a fantastic job of catering to the needs of the widest possible range of organisations. From tech start-ups to large multinationals, every business has a home in the Chamber Network. Throughout the pandemic, Chambers were an absolute bedrock of support for their communities, providing invaluable information, advice and support to businesses operating under the most difficult of circumstances. As we look forward to restarting, rebuilding and renewing our Economy, it will be Chambers and the businesses that they represent and fight for, that will drive the recovery and make the UK the best place in the world to do business. To achieve this the British Chambers of Commerce and our Network will continue to support businesses to innovate, do business across borders and grow sustainably in every region of the UK Cornwall is a great place to do business, a leader in so many fields, from agriculture, to tourism, to culture and heritage and beyond and events like the Festival of Business are fantastic forums for connecting businesses and showcasing the excellence, diversity, infrastructure, and networks that the region has to offer.I am delighted that I can support the Festival and look forward to meeting many of you over its duration. Sarah Howard, MBE Chair of BCC

Poor old Cornwall Cornwall has benefited from extensive EU funding over 20 years because we were diagnosed as the poorest part of England – not a great badge for a thriving, innovative, entrepreneurial area! As that comes to an end let’s make sure we apply the new UK government funding to raise our Duchy economically, confidently and in forward-looking industries. Use your Chamber of Commerce to get your head round Shared Prosperity Fund, Levelling Up principles, Local Skills Improvement Plan to name but the first tranche.

Free Training for your business! Cornwall still has EU training money. Your Chamber is delivering Employer-led Skills, Business Clusters and Growth Hub programmes through to 2023. Let’s not waste this funding to help Cornwall & Scilly recover from covid. Contact darren@cornwallchamber.co.uk now to see how we can help you.

Look on our website for more intel as we hear. “It is now over 30 years since the pioneering restoration of Heligan began and captivated the public with its romantic and melancholy energy. Lost to the brambles of time at the outbreak of WW1 when its gardeners left for war, sadly many never to return, the gardens’ restoration has been created in their name and is officially recognised as a ‘Living Memorial’. With over 200 acres open to enjoy, visitors can lose themselves in a world of gardening inspiration, ancient woodlands, a sub-tropical Jungle, rare breed livestock and an abundance of wildlife . . . welcome to The Lost Gardens of Heligan.” We are developing four FRAMEWORKS that will form the basis of policy-making driven by the private sector in Cornwall.
