a 5 percent enrollment drop at Bucks has students worried that another tuition hike will be implemented to make up for lost revenue. But Bucks President stephanie shanblatt says that students have nothing to worry about this year, and everything to look forward to with a plan for a new science building in the works. “everything will carry on… students won’t see any effect. We planned for it,” shanblatt said. Faced with dropping enrollment and cuts in government funding, Bucks has raised tuition for the last several years running. that may happen again next year, but not now, shanblatt said. shanblatt said college officials are working to try to keep tuition increases to a minimum. she said college officials had expected a drop in enrollment, and had drafted this

Matthew Schuler wows the crowd with his performance on “The Voice”, bringing much pride to Bucks students.

Getting eliminated from a show like this might be pretty disheartening for most people, but schuler let me know that he is defined by something greater. “i am not defined by the show, i am defined as a child of Jesus Christ and i always try to remember that he is sovereign.” so where does schuler go from here? does he go back to college or does he try and stick with his talents in the music industry?

“i definitely want to go to pursue a musical career, schuler said. i feel like i have come too far to walk away now.” Besides knowing where his help comes from in life, schuler credited a member of his family with the reason for his golden pipes. “it’s definitely genetic,” schuler said. “my mom has an amazing voice. she could easily pass for Whitney houston.” the importance of family is

evident in listening to schuler. he describes his whole family with affection. “my family in general has supported me through this whole thing,” schuler said. “they are all beautiful people and i am blessed to be part of their family.” schuler’s music experience began to blossom as he sang in his church choir and later joined a band at Pennsbury high school. “it was probably the first time i really invested in song

writing,” said schuler. after his high school graduation, schuler enrolled at Buck’s in the spring of 2012 where he enrolled as a business management major. after spending just one semester at Buck’s, he moved on to West Chester university. despite his short stint at Bucks’ he still credits the school for helping him get started. “it’s been a blessing, i felt like Bucks’ really prepared me for life,” schuler said. “i met people from different walks of life who were stuck in jobs that they did not really like. i was encouraged though because they were going to college to study things they wanted to do in life.” “this made me question what i really wanted to do in life.” it should be noted that when i conducted this interview schuler was in the top ten of the “Voice” and at the height of his busy lifestyle. he had not let the sudden stardom get to his head and still had time for an old friend.

Minimum wage maximum attention Bucks-news.com

The week of Dec 10, 2013

As more and more people find difficulty in making ends meet, the country’s minimum wage could be getting an increase with the Fair Minimum Wage Act. Centurion Staff

Making ends meet might become a little easier with the introduction of a bill called the Fair Minimum Wage Act. According to raisetheminimumwage.com, the bill, which was proposed by the Senate, would raise minimum wage to $10.10 per hour by 2015. The wages for tipped workers would also increase as well over time. For college students, making minimum wages can be challenging. Between paying tuition and buying supplies, even the gas to get to and from. “It’s hard being in college, paying for your car, phone, and living on your own,” said 18-year-old business major Jeremy Ott. During the State of the Union Address on Feb. 12 Obama made a point to mention raising the minimum wage. Obama wanted to raise the minimum wage to $9.00 per hour according to the New York Times. This desire to raise the

minimum wage was furthered on Dec. 4 when Obama announced his willingness to back the Senate up on raising the minimum wage to $10.10. There is also a possibility that Obama will go to Congress about spending and unemployment benefits in 2014. Many students at Bucks say that raising the minimum wage would be a great idea. “Raising minimum wage would be good because people will have more money,” Chris Pierre, 21 said. “Since the economy is down, it will also give people motivation to try and get jobs.” Mike O'Brien, a business administration major, thinks that raising the minimum wage would indeed help to stimulate the economy; "A lot of people make minimum wage and they will be able to enrich their lives and spend more money.” However, there are some students who think that raising the minimum wage could have some serious drawbacks. Derek McDill, 19 thinks that a possible side effect to

raising the minimum wage could lead to companies hiring less workers or even downsizing their current

workforce to avoid paying higher wages. Despite changes in economic policy that could

occur, it is unlikely that the minimum wage will change anytime soon.

The minimum wage for workers in Pennsylvania, such as those at a McDonald’s, is currently $7.25 an hour.

As we enter the first anniversary of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting, we recount the history of mass shootings and the ensuing debate over gun control in the United States. BY: CHRIS GIUSTI Centurion Staff

as we approach the anniversary of the sandy hook shooting, we examine how mass shootings have become unfortunately commonplace in american culture, with a total of 31 mass shootings since the Columbine shooting of 1999. the shootings prompted action by President Barack obama, who assured to make a push to restrict the flow of firearms into the hands of questionable individuals. despite the promises surrounding the tragedy, no legislation was passed until this past tuesday. the U.s house voted for a 10-year extension of a current federal gun bill that bans guns by metal detectors and X-ray machines, according to usatoday.com. the gun law was called the Undetectable Firearms act, that was first enacted by President ronald reagan in 1988, according to usatoday.com. “Gun control is something Continued on page 5

Losing sight in American culture? BY: TIMOTHY ZENNO Centurion Staff

With the coming of finals, and the holidays approaching, the pressure is on. everyone is feeling it, not just students. adults everywhere have been thrown in the gauntlet for the next month, and the Centurion is no different. it’s not always journalism students submitting content for the newspaper. We receive articles from students all over campus, and we even receive requests for us to cover events. We count on the students, faculty, and college administration to deliver on content that is worthy of being presented in print-form for everyone to see. Both for myself, and the rest of the staff here at the Centurion, we find ourselves struggling for stories to bring to the students. the pulse of the world and the concepts that the average college students are finding “captivating” tend to be two completely different things. there has been no shortage of world news: nelson mandela’s death, obamacare, radioactive materials in mexico and train derailments in new York. aside from that, there are all the other things people from our “millennial” generation have to be concerned about: leaking radioactive water in Japan, the “global warming” question, LGBt equality, the ongoing war in the middle-east that was supposed to be over and the increase to the minimum wage that everyone has been waiting on for almost a half a decade. as an editor and someone who is exposed to the public

opinion frequently, i have noticed that the majority of people at Bucks don’t pay a lot of these issues any attention. You might see some inspiring posts on Facebook about mandela’s death, but how many people understand the amount of impact this actually has on south africa? as an editor in a small american newspaper, i struggle to even comprehend that, and i can imagine most people follow this event as some kind of trend. most people at this school have different concerns. People’s minds are filled with desires for video games and clothing. the hottest items of the year are turning out to be expensive tech items: tablets, smart phones, watches and high-definition televisions just outline a few of the high-ticket items people have on their minds. and don’t even start with the Ps4 / Xbox one debate or you’re liable to start a small riot. however, the minimum wage is still 7.25. according to the associated Press in august, 77 percent of jobs created this year were part-time. With these issues alive and well, how many of us can actually afford these items? many already worry about college tuitions, children, rent and insurance. Young adults and college students are looking at paying for these items in the form of credit and debt. We find ourselves paying for things we can’t afford long after we’ve stopped enjoying them. respectfully, we’ve inherited our tendency to do this from our parents and a few of the earlier generations, as we’re seeing

with the struggling housing market, increasing taxes and the painful future of social security. this being said, the amount of debt we are still accruing, and the life of employment servitude we are earning ourselves with our college degrees costing us thousands of dollars, is unfortunately the last thing on the community’s mind, especially during this time of year. instead we find ourselves worrying about tV shows; People want to see matt schuler and his performance on television. People mourn the deaths of celebrities such as Paul Walker and find themselves forgetting that there are more pressing things in the world and their own lives for them to be worried about. Grades, school, and employment dominate many of our lives aside from that, causing us even more stress. most of us lead jobs that are unfulfilling, which is why we pursue degrees in the first place. most people pine and sigh about their work load, but the painful truth is that these degrees are ensuring that we can afford to pay off these high-ticket items we desire so dearly. it’s important that during this time of the year, we reflect on the past year, and don’t let ourselves become caught up in the popular media and the irrational voracity for material possessions. students should be focusing on their own lives and the world around them, or else the things they complain about will become exponentially worse as they grow older. which many feel very strongly about,” Jim hilley, 45, a social service major from Bensalem said. “no, the government can’t do anything because people need guns for protection and hunting.” hilley offers a different perspective to gun laws; there are plenty of people who use them for sport. it would hinder those who enjoy using these weapons for their sport if more legislation were passed restricting gun ownership. although mass shootings have been around as long as firearms themselves, mass shootings did not gain much traction on the national scope until the Columbine shootings in 1999. despite the missing spotlight, there were nine major shootings in america between 1984 and 1999’s Columbine. “as sad as it is, there is really nothing we can do except hope that something bad doesn’t happen every day that we wake up,” said andrew Zyck, 19, a sports management major from Warrington. the fact that unhinged individuals inhabit the same society as the rest of the population brings worry on unsure individuals. “Yes, it’s a scary thing,” kevin trearty, 19, a business major from Chalfont said. “i don’t let it affect me because

there is no point of being paranoid every time you walk outside your house, you just have to enjoy life while you can.” there are some less concerned students out there that believe that we have nothing to be worried about. “even though there are shootings going on all the time around the country, it is one of those things where you just have to look at it like it is rare that you will encounter such a horrible event like that,” said nick swinehart, 20, a criminal justice major from Warwick. despite the attention required by the complexity of gun control, it appears that priority has fallen from lawmaker’s thoughts and desks. the last piece of legislation successfully passed regarding gun control was the Protection of Lawful Commerce in arms act, which made it impossible for victims of shootings to sue manufacturers and dealers of firearms. the Protection of Lawful Commerce in arms act was passed in 2005. since the sandy hook shooting, there have been efforts to repeal the Protection of Lawful Commerce in arms act so that victims of shootings may hold manufacturers and distributers accountable in a wider array of instances. With the passing of recent legislation, it may open the

6 HOLIDAY NEWS

Is Christmas coming earlier this year? Bucks-news.com

The week of December 10, 2013

With winter holiday events happening all around the college, many students are questioning whether or not Bucks County is celebrating the holidays a little too early this year. BY: CHRIS GIUSTI Centurion Staff

Local residents have probably noticed that Christmas spirit is in the air. Bucks County Community College is preparing for Christmas with a Christmas Concert by the Music Department’s Concert Choir, happening Wednesday, December 11, under the direction of Professor Shelley Reed. Not only is the Concert Choir showing their spirit, so is everyone else. Christmas music is on the radio, people are putting up Christmas lights, and wrapping paper is literally everywhere. Christmas sales are abounding in every store, and you can find virtually everything with gingerbread and peppermint flavoring. Many houses and stores have had their halls decked since well before Thanksgiving. As some holiday enthusiasts say, it’s never too early. Too bad old Saint Nick doesn’t come around until the end of December! Whether it’s decorating like you are the Griswolds or having your favorite Christmas song on full blast wherever you are, some people and businesses are just brimming with the desire to spread Christmas joy. All this yuletide joy does bring one question to mind, that has been a popular topic of debate, possibly since the birth of Christmas itself: Do people get into the Christmas spirit entirely too early? “If I could listen to Christmas music all year long, to be honest, I probably would,” said Angela Crowen, 19, a nursing major from Warrington. Whether you’re not a holiday music fanatic, and you simply love to listen to Christmas music while you’re picking out your family Christmas tree, or if you’re the true zealot that constantly listens, everyone has their own opinion on where Christmas music belongs. “Everything about the holiday is great. I love the lights, music, and decorations,” added Crowen. There is nothing like the smell of the holidays right around the corner with the

Christmas lights, like Christmas store displays, seem to crop up earlier each year

memories of childhood excitement that brings that feeling back around this time no matter how old we get. “To be honest I become a little kid again when I hear Mariah Carey’s ‘All I want for Christmas’,” said Mike Lafferty, 19, a sports management major from Chalfont. This country is based on our freedom to have our own opinions, and there are citizens out there that still aren’t ready for early decorations and Christmas music. “It is way too early to be playing Christmas music in the beginning of November; save it for December,” said Nick Swinehart, 20, a criminal justice major from Warwick. Fall semester is coming to an end, and everyone is cramming in the last minute work. At the same time, they have to worry about what to get their mom, dad, siblings, girlfriend, or boyfriend. The holiday season can simply be madness, so many of us can see where Swinehart is coming from. The early Christmas craze that comes right after Halloween reminds us all of the stress that approaches. “It is just too much at one time, we get to Halloween and it just takes off, which I

believe adds more stress to an already stressful holiday season,” said Kevin Trearty, 19, business major from Chalfont. Later, Treatry would add that, “some people just need to relax and wait until at least after Thanksgiving for all the music, lights, and

decorations.” He is a classic example of the many people who believe that there is a place for all the caroling, garland and ornaments. Whether you are Clark Griswold or the Grinch there will always be people that start early on the holi-

day music and decorating in early November. What we can all agree with is that the calendar has turned to December, the semester is winding down, and slowly, even the haters of the early holiday cheers are coming around to one of the best times of the year.

“The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds:” review The week of December 10, 2013

“The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds” breaks new walls in this new installment released for the Nintendo 3DS on Nov. 22, 2013. Link sets out once again to save Hyrule from invading evil. BY: ERICH MARTIN Centurion Staff

ate worlds that truly feel as though they are living, breathing and in danger. The enemies present beautiful threats, while harmless fauna remind you that not everyone is out to kill you. In terms of sound, the quality could not get much better. The pure quality of the sound is much higher than many of the other games currently on the system. The music presents wonderful throw backs to the past of video games,

explicitly older Zelda games. “The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds” is not without its problems, however. The game, like its predecessors, features a menagerie of enemies and bosses. While there are tons of different enemies, many seem to be stronger re-skins of previously encountered enemies. Many of the bosses fail to offer the massive experiences offered in full 3D titles such

as “Ocarina of Time” and “The Windwaker.” This is not to say that the bosses are not challenging or fun. The bosses manage to be intriguing and different in every dungeon. Together, the open world, challenging gameplay, and plethora of side quests make “A Link Between Worlds” one of the best Zelda games. in years.

“The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds” brings the world of Hyrule to the Nintendo 3DS in an all new adventure for Link, Zelda and Ganon. “A Link Between Worlds” introduces the players to the alternate world of Hyrule, known as Lorule. The game follows the standard Zelda template in terms of simple story, however, this is where the differences really end in regard to previous entries in the series. The main formula stays the course in the way that players, as Link, must explore the worlds, solve puzzles, kill monsters, and find treasure. The game opens with an evil wizard resurrecting Ganon in order to absorb his previously attained triforce of power. The evil wizard, Yuga, connects the two worlds, Hyrule and Lorule, in order to awaken Ganon. Yuga accomplished this goal by turning all of the seven sages into portraits. Through a twisted turn of events, Link gains the ability to transform into a drawing and move along the walls.

“A Link Between Worlds” turns the traditional formula of Zelda on its head. Instead of following the standard method where players find a tool to help them through a specific dungeon, players use tools throughout the game. This has been the case in Zelda games for much of the past 20 years. “A Link Between Worlds” changes this formula. Instead of finding items for specific usage, players have the ability to rent every item in the game from the near beginning. This allows the players to adventure and explore at their leisure. The openness allows players to tackle the dungeons in any order, and is a wonderful throwback to the days of the NES, when Zelda first began. The combat is extremely satisfying to partake in. The combat is very similar to the combat of the original “A Link to the Past.” The combat in “A Link Between Worlds,” however, is much smoother. This allows the player to experience satisfying and strategic gameplay. Graphically, the game is a pleasure to look at. Textures are all smooth, and colors blend together nicely to cre-

Eminem fever takes hold ENTERTAINMENT

Eminem releases his eigth album, “Marshall Mathers LP 2” with strong commercial success BY: BRIAN KELLEY Centurion Staff

Eminem launched his newest album, the “Marshall Mathers LP 2,” with raving commercial reception, selling over one million copies in the first two weeks of sale. Hip-Hop legend, Eminem, released his eighth studio album on Nov. 5, 2013, titled the “Marshall Mathers LP 2,” which was a sequel to his third studio album titled the “Marshall Mathers LP” which debuted in May 2000. The album debuted at number one on the Billboard 100 and has not left the top spot since the release date. The album was the second fastest selling album in 2013 behind Justin Timberlake’s “The 20/20 Experience.” Eminem managed to sell 792,000 copies the first week, which is impressive in a generation full of piracy. Within two weeks of release, Eminem added another platinum plaque to his collection by selling over a million copies after the second week of sales. The “Marshall Mathers LP 2” is now Eminem’s seventh number one album in his career, and his eighth album, solidifying his title as a perceived “Rap God.” To be able to sell that many albums, as a rapper, at this

“Marshall Mathers” album release sees immediate success.

point in his career is astonishing, considering most rapper’s careers don’t last for more than five years. Although the album experienced commercial success, hip-hop fans seem to be on the fence about the album overall. Although the album does have many songs, such as “Rap God” and “Rhyme or Reason,” which showcase Eminem’s ability to be a lyrical genius, many express that the album was not what they

were expecting. “I liked the album overall, but he just isn’t the same,” said Bekka Cain, 18, Education Major. “Eminem will always be one of the greatest, but this album definitely does not compare to the original or the Slim Shady LP.” Many Slim Shady fans seem to feel the same way. Although the album was great in many people’s opinions, a lot of people were expecting more from him

because of the potential they have seen in his music previously. Perhaps the best from Eminem has already been seen. That is very tough to conclude, considering the work that was put into the “Marshall Mathers LP 2.” Yes, it is true Eminem has lost a lot of his bizarre creativity and his production was more typical than usual, but Eminem has also been in the music industry for over 20 years.

Perhaps the album is just a sign of maturity for the rapper. Tracks such as, “The Monster” ft. Rihanna, and “Stronger Than I Was” show the overall growth of the rapper as a human being. That is a major shift from what Eminem used to rap about in the early years of his career. “I think the album is a great album compared to the other hip-hop music released this year,” said Deshawn Jackson, 19 year old, psychology major. “If you compare the Marshall Mathers LP 2 to his previous work, you will be disappointed, but if you appreciate it for what it’s worth, you will enjoy it.” The collaborations on the album also draw attention to many music listeners. Although he did not have many features, Eminem managed to pull some big names including pop-star Rihanna, and hip-hop’s new king, Kendrick Lamar. The “Marshall Mathers LP 2” is a good album to listen to if you enjoy hip-hop or Eminem. The production was good, and the lyrics were good. This gave Eminem another solid project to look back on, and keeps his loyal fans satisfied. The “Marshall Mathers LP 2” is in stores now and available for purchase on iTunes.

Charlie XCX comes to Bucks 10 ENTERTAINMENT

The week of December 10, 2013

Bucks-news.com

Upcoming singer and songwriter, Charlie XCX came to Bucks on Nov. 15 to perform in the auditorium of the gateway center. Charlie XCX made many new fans at the small show, helping spread her name. Centurion Staff

New wave synthpop artist Charli XCX performed at Bucks’ Newtown campus last month, dazzling the audience and leaving them entertained for the modest price of $10. The Mahlors, a popular local band first graced the stage. They played for about an hour before ending their last performance before surrendering the spotlight to Charli XCX. The Mahlors have been gaining in popularity in recent months and years, using their popular blend of rock and reggae to open new avenues to fans not previously engrossed by rock or reggae alone. The Mahlors are similar to Charlie XCX in the way that they are gaining popularity at almost the same rate as the young synthpop star. The Mahlors, however, come from the United States, a stark difference from the British talent being promoted by Charlie XCX. Coming all the way from the UK to play at Bucks, Charli XCX did not disappoint, she inspired awe in the crowd with a few of her most popular songs including, “Nuclear seasons,” “Take my hand,” “Set me free,” “I love it.” and she even performed a song that she announced she had only recently recorded the video for, titled “Superlove.” Charli XCX has toured with many big name bands and musicians as well, including Cold Play, Ellie Goulding Paramore Santigold and Marina and The Diamonds. As of June 2013, Charlie XCX has announced she’s working on a second album. At the end of the show, the concert goers rose from their seats completely and utterly impressed with the raw power of Charli XCX’s

voice. It was $10 very much well spent, as most will agree; Hayley Owens, 20 said, “I thought it was good. I had never really heard of her until tonight.” Another patron, Sam Faulkner 21, who already knew of Charli XCX before the concert, called it a “solid performance, all around.” Other patrons of the concert seemed just as impressed, audience members were gushing about both performances. Some came for “The Mahlors”, and others for Charli XCX. Some didn’t even know what to expect. Though viewers may not have all entered the auditorium with anything in common, the one thing every member of the audience could all say is, by the end of the night, they were all fans of Charli XCX. Charli XCX began her songwriting musical career when she was 14. In 2008, she released her first two singles, "!Franchesckaar!" and double A-side "Emelline/Art B*tch," along with her first album “14.” Her second album, “True Romance,” released April 12, 2012. Much of Charlie XCX’s music has been subject to mostly positive reception, and Charlie’s most recent album, “True Romance,” currently holds a score of 76 on the review site, metacritic. With the reception Charlie XCX has received thus far, it is not unlikely that she will continue to sky rocket in terms of popularity with the release of her third album. Number one Spartans defeat Centurions SPORTS

BY: STEPHEN GODWIN JR. Centurion Staff

Before the game between the Northampton Spartans (73) and the Bucks County Centurions (3-5) the head coach of the Centurions Lori Sullivan described it as the toughest game they would play all season. It was just that as the Spartans man handled the Centurions 95-30 behind 22 points and six steals by point guard Brianna Morales on Dec. 7 at Bucks’. Morales is ranked 11th in the EPACC conference in points per game with 20.3 and was clear the quarterback of the Spartan offense on this day. “We played with intensity,” said Morales. “Our defense was great, they were able to get us some turnovers so I could execute on offense and I think that is what allowed us to have such a big lead at halftime.” Defense was the deciding factor in the game as the Spartans forced 16 turnovers and harassed the Centurions on offense. On the Centurion side guard Shayla Panniell helped lead her team with nine points. “We played pretty good,”

said Panniell. “They just out hustled us. They were quicker to the ball and just beat us with their defense.” The Spartans had a definite presence on the court as they came in boasting the top seed in the conference at 4-0 overall. The team has a history of good sports programs and have laid the ground work for a well-established team. The Centurions on the other hand are more of the up and coming type of team. After enduring a nightmare winless season last year they are playing better this season. The game started well for the Centurions as they took five of the first seven shots attempted. Unfortunately only one of those shots fell through as their shots had a habit of rimming out. That dry spell would allow the Spartans to take charge as they would go on an unprecedented 20-2 run. Getting them started was shooting guard Katie Schickling who hit five three pointers in the half. Getting out in transition fueled the Spartans charge as they got out on the fast break quickly off Centurion turnovers and missed shots.

Bucks forward Shannon Swift, and Northampton center Lacy LaRezza battle for possesion during opening tip-off.

Drawing attention away from Schickling was the inside presence of Lacy LeRezza who gave her team plenty of second chance opportunities. After playing for the first seven minutes LeRezza would rest on the bench till the second half, but her replacements were ample fill ins. The growing lead forced to attempt most of their shots from outside the paint with

little success. This tactic made them predictable and soon they were staring down a 41-6 deficit. In different parts of the half the Centurions tried to start a rally, but with ice-cold shooting that run never came. The Spartans closed out the half by getting to the foul line and closed the half leading 56-15. The defense of the Spartans amped it up in the second

half as they held the Centurions scoreless for the first six minutes and to just two points in the first 10 minutes. This allowed the Spartan offense to open up a 81-17 lead. Morales would do most of her damage in this half as routinely found the ball. In the closing minutes of the game the Centurions would finally mount a run of 8-4 to finish the game 95-30.

At roughly one third of the way through the regular season, the Philadelphia Flyers (13-13-2) have bounced back from an atrocious 1-7 start to hover at .500 and hold 28 points towards a playoff spot and are tied for third place in the metropolitan division. Peter Laviolette was the head coach of the Flyers through training camp and preseason. This changed, however, after the team started 0-3 and he was fired. Laviolette was replaced by the assistant head coach, Craig “Chief” Berube. Since the change in coaching, the club has picked up their game. The coaching change forced the team to focus more on skating and the fundamentals of hockey, according to

Berube. The Flyers made a trade on Oct. 31 that sent center Maxime Talbot to the Colorado Avalanche for right winger Steve Downie. The move was done to boost the Flyer’s offense, but it was just a swap of pretty average players. The season has been rough as of yet for Captain Claude Giroux. Giroux plays center on the top line, and has been underperforming compared to the standards he set earlier in his career. After playing 28 games so far this season, Giroux, 25, has only scored five goals and totaled 15 assists. The first goal scored by Giroux this season came on Nov. 9 and ended a 21-game scoreless streak. The entire team has had a rough time scoring this season as they are ranked 27 out of 30 teams in the NHL. The current team leaders for goals are right winger Matt Read and center Vincent Lecavalier (center), who both have nine (9) goals and 15 assists. Recently center Sean Couturier’s third line has been red hot, seemingly the most productive and hardest playing line for the Flyers in recent games. This is not to discredit the rest of the club, however, who all push for every win they earn. One of the biggest factors keeping the Flyers alive this season however, has been the Flyer’s goal tending. For the first time in recent memory,

the Flyers have not had to worry compulsively about their goal tending situation. Goal tending this season has been led by Steve Mason, 25. Mason is currently ranked seventh in save percentage, clocking in at .932 save percentage over 20 games. Mason has averaged only 2.14 goals allowed per game, according to flyers.nhl.com. If Mason’s current play continues, it is highly likely that he will be considered for the Veniza trophy, which denotes the league’s top goalie, at the end of the season. Ray Emory has been Mason’s relief, and has also been playing solid hockey. Together, the coaching change and motivation of the team headed by Giroux have pulled the Flyers out of their dismal beginnings. The Flyers played on Saturday, Dec. 7 in Dallas, and The Flyers next play on
