Gary Baldwin (Director Winenet) has judged this show continuously for 18 years and brings a strong technical aspect to the judging. Master of Wine Toni Paterson has now clocked up ten years as panel Chair and brings a steadiness and calm resolve to the judging room that is appreciated by all around her. Following the judging Toni wrote “Last week was fabulous – I have been on a high ever since due to the sensational wines that we had to choose from in the trophy line up.” Peter Leske, experienced winemaker and popular South Australian Consultant owns La Linea Wines. Geraldine McFaul winemaker at Willow Creek, and Sue Bell owner and winemaker of Bellwether make up the balance of the experienced team of judges. Huon Hooke and all judges were delighted with the high standard of wines and the general comment was that this show contained the highest winemaking standards in the history of the show.
Toni Paterson MW wrote to me as follows: “Quality was at an all time high at this years’ Boutique Wine Show. The gold medal and trophy winning wines were outstanding - testament to the high calibre winemakers and viticulturists of Australia. We discovered many wines with poise, restraint, subtle complexity and harmony. My thanks and appreciations go to the talented and experienced team of judges and stewards. Many congratulations to all of the deserving medalists and trophy winners”. This is high praise indeed from one of Australia’s most experienced wine judges. When I commenced this show 18 years ago the intention was to create an umbrella for the ‘small winemakers’ as they were all named then. My winemaker brother pointed out that the very small producers were unable to enter wine shows due to large quantity requirements for entries. I am delighted to see that the majority of trophy winners this year are very small producers indeed crushing less than 100 ton and in the case of the Cabernet trophy less than 10 ton. Companies of this size won the following trophies: Wine of Show, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz, Fortified, Sauvignon Blanc, White
Blend, White Wine of Show, Red Wine of Show and Estate Grown and Produced – a triumph for the very small producers, genuinely Boutique! A special mention must go to Western Australia with a total of nine trophies covering Margaret River, further north to Geographe and South to Denmark for the winning Pinot Noir!. Quite a haul for the West! Huon Hooke’s teams of Judges and the supporting Stewards delivered a smooth and successful week which yet again has exposed standards of excellence at the ‘boutique’ end of Australia’s wine industry. On the winners’ pages you will read food matching comments from the Sommeliers following the Judges’ comments – adding ‘flavour’ to the pages. I hope you enjoy the read.

As chairman, I love nothing better at trophy time, than to see a lineup of very strong top-of-class gold-medal wines. Quixotically, the harder it is to judge the trophies for best white and red wine, and best wine of show, the better the show has been. We are happy to be tested!
This year, I think many people will be surprised by the results. It is rare for a sweet or fortified or sparkling wine to give the top trophies a shake, but we saw that happen, with a simply outstanding sparkling wine doing battle with a gorgeous sweet white and a glorious old fortified wine. A delicious off-dry riesling, a complex pinot noir, a refined yet multi-faceted chardonnay, a profound shiraz and a remarkable merlot were among the excellent table wines that rose to the top of their respective categories. There were fewer entries this year, probably because of the difficult 2011 harvest in many eastern regions. The upshot was two judging panels instead of the usual three. All the same, I felt the standard was higher this year. Perhaps winemakers were more selective with their entries, because at the end of the day, we were impressed.
Chardonnay was glorious and an absolute pleasure to judge, and shiraz again provided plenty of highlights. One of the classes that I felt jumped into a higher gear this year was the ‘other red varieties’. We found very good examples of several varieties: malbec was outstanding, followed by tempranillo, and also montepulciano, nebbiolo and grenache. The result was eight silver medals and seven bronze from 34 entries. Alas, no gold medal, but this class bodes well for the future.

A ‘ jewel in the crown’
of Gralyn fortified wines from the pioneers (first vintage 1978) of port styles in the Margaret River region. This luscious fortified dessert wine is predominantly muscat; vibrant, amber-brown with a green rim. The bouquet is lifted and layered with spice, butterscotch and fruit cake. Seventeen years maturation in old oak casks has produced richness and rancio complexity. Intense flavours of raisin and toffee sustain a long, clean finish. Aptly labelled, this limited release has the stamp of a true Artizan – hand crafted and unique. These qualities are also reflected in the label with original artwork by Merilyn Hutton.

I would match this wine with a Thai seafood-based dish, which has a spicy and sour sauce such as Tom Yum Goong. This is a prawn soup with lemongrass, lemon juice, chilli paste and mushrooms. A complex style of barrel-fermented sauvignon blanc with layers of flavours which held our interest. An attempt to do more with this often monotonic varietal. Our top wine had everything in correct proportion. The fruit was pure, focused and energised. The acid enlivened and lengthened the palate and complexity was subtle and purposeful. Some buy in fruit from other growers, some send their juice to production houses and some hire in specialist contractors. Some do none of that and they carry out all of the processes within their own farm yard gate by their owners in many cases mum, dad and the kids. It is these winemakers who we recognize for their efforts.

The shiraz is fermented in two small two ton open fermenters prior to basket pressing. They only produced 600 cases this year. The photograph on the cover of this book is of Corey working the basket press.

Some don’t have either. Our “ best estate grown and produced” trophy recognises those who go the full monty: they grow the grapes, make the wine and can rightly claim to be vignerons - to use the old French expression. This requires great personal commitment and financial investment. We reserve a special respect for these people. This award is the mark of that respect”.

The standard of design this year has jumped considerably with clear evidence that wine companies both ‘Boutique’ and ‘Big’ are using professional designers and the in-house designer is disappearing.
Having Lisa McGuigan on board as the Chair of the judging lifts the expectation of exploring and discovering merit in the designs. The twelve judges split into three teams were conscientious and determined to come to the right decisions. We all met in the sunny Cargo Bar overlooking Sydney’s beautiful Inner Harbour and with wonderful judging conditions the judges followed their brief under the guidance of panel leaders Toni Paterson MW, Nicola Rennie (Vinology.com.au) and Daniel McKeating (Studio Lost & Found – Perth). In an effort to introduce a range of opinions, several new industry judges joined us this year. Professional designer Marty Widholm commented: “I loved the judges in my panel, and team leader Toni Paterson is impressive! We all had the same views and it was amazing that we had practically the same taste in design and marketing (after
deliberation) when judging each bottle and label. It makes me feel that at the end of the day, maybe quality, well thought out solid design is here to stay”. This year we introduced a Packers’ Prize. Before the judging, the Competition coordinator Tania De Ceglie and the workers and I all had a say and a vote which unanimously decided that Project 49 Chardonnay 2012 designed by Maud Design for Victorian boutique wine company Drink Wine was our winner. We didn’t inform the judges of this and we were pleased to see that they agreed by awarding this bottle the Best Boutique White Wine trophy. Well done packers!

If there was a catwalk for wine packaging then the Wine Design Competition would be it!
What an outstanding idea this competition is. It allows the wine industry to see a collection of ideas and applications in a user friendly publication where they can compare their work by simply flipping through this book or quietly studying the collection online. Typography is always an area where the genders of our judges battle it out. Males tend to all agree on similar styles and the females are usually opposite in their preferences - so we had some interesting battles when making the final decisions. Texture this year was a focus with several bottles winning their class on this quality. The Best Wine Bottle was a standout being a combination of a great story, beautiful glass, elegant finishes and outstanding typography applied with innovation. It is style and great texture all the way. A winner from every angle - literally! We all look forward to next year’s competition and have faith that the quality of design will continue to climb and become the fashion house of the industry.

The design was inspired by the story of Bleasdale’s founder, Frank Potts, who had sailed the world by the age of 21. The unique bottle design was modeled on the ships used by the Royal Navy at the time; short, squat, and a low centre of gravity to prevent them from toppling over in rough seas. This story influenced not only the design of the glass, but also the selection of luxury cues; from the rope around the neck of the bottle, to the hardwood stopper cork, screen printed typography, and the design of the sealing label. A fantastic concept that sits perfectly at the helm of the Bleasdale wine portfolio.

The image on the label wants you to find out more about the story and the wine. Good shelf appeal. Very evocative name. A true story and an image with integrity. The paper and premium cap illustrate quality. The image of an aged Peter Logan may suggest that the wine should be aged too! It also tells you that making wine in Orange is a tough task. A really eye-catching large illustration of a fun and quirky roller skating character which is fresh and young, and a real change from the traditional style usually seen on a fortified. The fabric texture of this label was stunning and made for quite an overall opulent look. The striking pewter colour palette was carried from the label through to the bottleneck. The well known and simple standout logo of Peter Lehmann was a focal point on the label. A great shaped bottle made this a stand out choice.
A clever use of printing straight onto the glass instead of onto a label, allowing you to look straight through the opaque artwork into the bottle. The colour of the glass used helps create the whole light and bright fluid feeling. The theme is carried over to the back of the bottle with the rather cute inclusion of the Taylor’s iconic seahorse swimming through the barcode. Classy on all levels and a perfect ‘mate’ in the Taylors stable.

The judges appreciated the innovative die cut holes, which correspond to the shape and location of each ‘chosen’ block within the Chapel Hill vineyard. We also love the beautiful French Saver Glass bottle, the elegant use of white space, the hand-scribed signatures, and the use of a subtle matt copper foil stamp to match the capsule. These labels have the right balance of luxury cues to convey the price point and positioning of this range. Overall, a fantastic extension of the iconic Chapel Hill brand.

A striking eye-catcher. Contemporary and sophisticated. Fabulous bottle shape with a simple and effective name and label which will easily withstand the pressure of refrigeration and the ice bucket. Very slick neck band, quality paper and font. An overall quality feel. The cable tie, while being a little hard to open, is original and memorable. Bold, fun and distinctive! Not characteristically Australian. A good talking point for the table and could be interpreted as international – maybe from Spain or South America which adds to the appeal.
