Welcome to In the summer of 1746 botanist Carl von Linné, on a state-commissioned expedition to Western Gothland, made a stop at Borgstena and then came riding into Borås. He later reported that the then 125-year-old Borås was a ”medium-sized city, attractive and clean”, which holds true to this day. He goes on to describe the city as ”consisting of ten interesting intersecting streets, all being 12 ells [7 metres] wide and fully paved”. A description today’s Linnémarschen Walking Event articipants might wonder at! In 1977, Hestra IF sports club decided to commemorate the next leg of Linné’s famed expedition from Borås to Alingsås by hosting a ’Linné’s Walk’ starting in Alingsås and finishing at Hestra’s clubhouse in Borås. After 25 years, the event start was also relocated to Hestra clubhouse, and since 2006, both the start and finish lines have been located at Borås Arena. On June 5 1977, 171 participants set off from Alingsås or Hedared in the first ever event. 166 of these made it to the finish at Hestra Clubhouse. At the 40th anniversary event in 2016, a record 4,304 walkers crossed the starting line. Since 1977, Linnémarschen has been held annually, and has grown in popularity to become Sweden’s biggest international walking event, attracting participants from over 20 countries. The mission for Linnémarschen is still to host a health and leisure event, combining the thrill of experiencing the scenic surroundings of Borås on foot with social interaction amongst kindred spirits.

Carl von Linné (1707 - 1778) Internationally, he is perhaps Sweden’s most famous person. As he travelled around the countryside, he made detailed notes on the flora, fauna and geology. Carl von Linné visited Borås in 1746 and was impressed by the diversity of the landscape. The tracts he refers to as the “Västra Götaland Alps” include the Rya Åsar nature reserve, which is where much of our event takes place. The Linnémarschen walking event is a great way to enjoy a day of healthy activity with friends in beautiful natural surroundings.

A thrill for everyone The official start for Saturday’s routes is 8:00 am.
All Saturday’s routes start with a walk through Borås Zoo up to the Kypesjön lake, where the 10.5 km route turns around and heads back to Borås city. The other routes continue through the Kype forest via Brämhults Gård up to the route’s highest point at Ymergården. At this spot, the 21 km route turns around to head back towards the city on a gentle descent through the Ymer forest. The 57 and 42 km routes radiate out from Ymergården around the outskirts of Borås. Kransmossen, Svarttjärn lake, Älmås nature reserve and the Pickesjön lake are just some of the scenic destinations along this route. After the 32 km to Pickesjön lake, the 57 km route stops for the night. The Saturday routes converge at Sandwalls Plats through Borås city alongside Viskan river to the Finish at Borås Arena. The last leg passes a number of artworks, including street art.

A 2-day route for walkers prepared for a serious challenge. This walk follows the Saturday Marathon Walk as far as lake Pickesjön after 32 km. Walkers stay there the rest of the day, prepare their evening meal, enjoy the atmosphere and sleep in a tent (your own or ours). We arrange: transportation of supplies, toilets, water, open fire and site stewards. Sunday starts with a walk past Ramnasjön lake and joins Sunday’s 21 km route at Gamla Linnéstenen (Linnés monument). The maximum number of participants is 100. Late registration is not possible. A Borås Classic event.
The 21 km Kype-Ymer route passes through the Kype & Ymer forests northeast of the city. This walk is mainly along forest roads and footpaths and ends in the pedestrian precincts of Borås city. It is possible to walk the 21 km route on both days, as each route offers a diverse range of scenic sights. Saturday’s more open walk passes through Borås Zoo, over Hyberg’s farming highlands to the last leg through Borås City offering a good contrast to Sunday’s more wilderness-style route through the Rya Åsar nature reserve. The 42 km Marathon Walk is an all-day event for walkers who want a full day of exercise while taking in Borås’ scenic surroundings. This route is mainly along gravel and forest roads interspersed with forest footpaths and ending on asphalt.
This route is for those who want an easier walk, but who still want to feel they have covered a fair distance. The steepest incline on this route is actually up to the ‘Savannah’ inside Borås Zoo. Like the other Saturday routes, this one finishes by the Viskan river in Borås City. A Borås Classic ‘Starter’ event.
We will be serving hot soup after approx. 1/3 of the walk and we also offer hot dogs and accompaniments after approx. 2/3s of the walk. A Borås Classic event.

SUNDAY, 29 APRIL 2018 The official start for Sunday’s routes is at 8:00 am.
All Sunday routes pass through Borås’ northwestern forests on a trail through the Rya Åsar nature reserve and its environments. Walkers will experience the breathtaking carpet of flowering wood anemones on the slopes of the nature reserve. The 3 km and 8 km Accessible routes and 10.5 km walk mainly follow the Viskan river valley in the direction of the Almenäs bathing place by the Öresjö lake. The 21 km route turns off into the forest to wind its way along the holloway travelled by Linné to the top of Rya Åsar and the scenic Ryssby Klint cliff-top viewpoint. The Sunday routes are wildernessstyle trails.

The 21 km route is for those who want to experience the heights of Rya Åsar and its breathtaking scenery. The walk up Rya Åsar involves a change in elevation of some 100 metres, but it’s well worth the effort. The route takes in the cliff-top viewpoint of Ryssby Klint, Ryssby dam and Hestra clubhouse, where the last of the artificial snow testifies to the end of the winter skiing season. Via the crater like Måndalen valley with Fornesjön lake at its base, the route passes Hästhagen and descends to the Almenäs bathing spot. The route then converges with the 10.5 km route at the base of the Ryda Klint cliff-top and then takes walkers onwards to beautiful Ramshulan. A Borås Classic event.

8 KM ACCESSIBLE ROUTE
Start: 8.00-10.00. Walking time: 2-3 hours. No. of drink/snack stations: 2 Toilets: At the Start and Finish at Borås Arena and half-way. The Accessible Routes are for participants who, for whatever reason, are unable to complete the other routes. The ground on the Accessible Routes is walker- and wheel-friendly with a compact surface and asphalt. The route is more or less along level ground and avoids steep descents. Like the Saturday route, this is for those who prefer a more leisurely walk, but still with a sense of achievement. This route takes you upstream of the Viskan river to the Almenäs bathing spot. From there, an uphill leg awaits, until you can take in the mighty cliffs of Ryda Klint from its base. From the gentle farmland of Ramshulan, the route passes through the Björbo parkland with its deciduous forest, cultivated roses and forest glades. A Borås Classic ‘Starter’ event.
Borås Tidning, BT, is the Sjuhärad region’s biggest media house. Here you will find the latest news from the region and the rest of the world. BT Familjeäventyr is for the whole family. This route offers a variety of outdoor activity stations and the kids’ favourite, the zipline, is a must! Along the route you will encounter checkpoints. The more you find, the greater your chance is to win some prizes. BT Familjeäventyr is held on both Saturday and Sunday. Choose your starting time when you register. We have a limited number of starting times every minute to reduce queues at the acitivity stations. Register well in advance to increase the chance of securing your preferred starting time. Since 2012, Linnémarschen has been the only walking event in Sweden on the international circuit. The IML Walking Association is an independent organisation whose purpose is to promote and market international multi-day walking events in countries around the world. Linnémarschen has ensured that the quality of the walks, the routes and the event as a whole satisfy the high standards of the IML Walking Association.
The days before Linnémarschen 2018, the IML General Meeting will be held in Borås. Thanks to this conference, we are expected to welcome a recordbreaking amount of international walkers.

COLLECTION OF YOUR BIB NUMBERS:
The easiest way is to pick up your bib numbers at the Scandic Plaza Borås on Friday 27 April, 10 am-6 pm. Fotriktigt shoe store will also be on site selling selected walking items at promotional prices. You can also collect your bib number at the start at Borås Arena from 7:30 am on 28-29 April.

PARKING:
DOGS:
Dogs are welcome. The Saturday routes (except Adventure Walk) start at Borås Zoo where pets are not allowed. Dog owners can take an alternative and specially designated route around the park and rejoin the route at Kypesjön lake.
CATERING:
Varied catering is available at the start and finish at Borås Arena.

Although primarily intended for walkers, you are very welcome to run along the routes. No times will be recorded.
NORDIC WALKING POLES:
Nordic walking poles are permitted on all the routes.
The standard online registration system closes on Friday, 20 April. After that date, late registrations subject to a surcharge may be made at: - Scandic Plaza Borås 10 am-6 pm on 27 April, when bib numbers are issued. - Borås Arena on either event day at 7:30 am. Both of these late registration centres accept credit card, Swish or cash payment.
