“My father, a psychiatrist, was a major influence on me, igniting a fascination in the invisible unknown around us. This drove an interest in meditation, consciousness, the infinite, telepathy, and mysticism. When I paint, it feels as if I’m able to move between our current perceived reality and this ‘other’.”

Born in Italy, Nima at an early age discovered her interest in photography and commercials when she saw an image of Gucci at the age of 6, since then she decided to follow a glamorous and creative path. At her young age she has achieved a reputation, starting her own studio 7 years ago and later expanded thanks to the demand for work, all this favoured by her friends requiring books. The photographer describes how her creative process takes place:My mind associates everything I see or do with a possible shooting, so I let myself be inspired by everything: there is no limit to my imagination and it will never exist. She has developed her artistic sense in a self-taught way, allowing her to be part of covers of magazines and dreamt campaigns, speaker of a conference as an emerging phenomenon in photography and photographer of the renowned Gigi Hadid, in which stated that she was only given 5 minutes to capture the face of the model. Thus, this promise of photography has succeeded in overcoming the cultural barrier of age to demonstrate the artistic sensibility of young photographers and emerging artists who are often underestimated but have the most valuable ideas that frames our times.

Natalia Cortes Photographer - New York, USA

March 2018

Inspired by Everyday Life Natalia, originally from Colombia began her journey in photography at a young age influenced by her relatives who were part of the artistic movement: from photojournalists to fashion designers inspired her creativity. The photographer tells us that at the age of 18 she moved to New York, a change that was not easy but with time she fell in love with the great metropolis and all the potential that helped her grow as a person and professional.

We began by asking her what aspects of the environment influence her work: “Exactly 8 years ago I moved to NY, a city that has influenced me in everything, each person I have met has contributed something to my life because it is a multicultural city and it has allowed me to share with incredible people. Since I arrived I have been fascinated by the amount of things that can be done in the Big Apple. NY is definitely a city that never sleeps, because it is there to help you develop your dreams.

What is the orientation and approach do you use when taking photographs? Rather than orientation or focus I would call it inspiration and magic in the slightest, sometimes obtaining an unexpected and surprising result. I try to open myself up to different things and new challenges, letting my photographs mainly speak for themselves, may they have my essence, always highlighting the beauty in everyday life.

How do you see Latin photographers in the U.S. and the rest of the world? Latin America is very well represented in the industry either by Fashion designers, Top models, photographers or artists, thus demonstrating their passion, dedication and potential. Vanidades (magazine) opened the doors to the market, leaving very high all those who stand out in the industry starting with Vogue in countries like Colombia, Mexico and Peru, so I see clearly that Latin America has evolved and has revolutionized the photographic industry around the world.

How do you think a photographer’s work stands out with social media today? To be very clean in the artistic environment without passing over anyone, respecting and educating because you can’t be a good photographer when you’re not a good person, that’s my opinion. Social media is an opportunity to perform but we should not abuse it, and of course, you have to feel passion for every project that is developed. Sometimes you will fall but you have to learn to stand up and take the lesson of what happened.

What advice can you give to young people who are looking for opportunities in a difficult medium as the artistic one? It’s not difficult but competitive... it’s like colors, you have an infinite range to choose from but you select the one that inspires you the most. Besides, art is so universal that it opens more than one way to develop yourself as an artist... the key is knowing: 1) what do you want to express, 2) do what inspires you, 3) have clear goals, 4) be focused and passionate.

“I want to tell you about the process of my work; years ago I could not draw people and it was suggested that I buy 500 sheets and draw people without thinking. I bought 1500 and painted them all. That was the beginning of my evolution as an artist. If you notice in my pictures color and pattern go in parallel. They have hotel functions that give the work depth and expressiveness. In my paintings I depict the intrusion of a person through art and through media. I’m not a shy artist.”
