ANGELA LIZON Artist London Exhibition “Collosal Cats”

b Interview Bogamia Mag: ANGELA LIZON Bogamia Mag: When did your love began for animals or cats? A: I've always liked animals (I’ve been a vegetarian for 25 years) but have only started using them in my art work in the last four years. I use them in an anthropomorphic way. Bogamia Mag: What is the purpose of your artwork? A: It's just what I do. It's a job that I'm good at and love doing every day. Bogamia Mag: What techniques are used in your paintings? A: I use oil paint as I love the range of colours and it's flexiblity and slow drying times. The cat's fur is built up in layers using quite broad brushes. I use glazes for the eyes to make them more luminous. Bogamia Mag: Why do you portray cats? A: I have long been interested in kitsch and to me cats are the epitome of kitsch. They also seem to have more expression in their eyes than other animals. I don't paint their whiskers as this also encourages the reading of their faces in a human way. Bogamia Mag: What message do you want to convey to the public? A: My work is about so called "good" and "bad" taste. It explores ideas often taboo in the fine art world such as sentimentality, the cute and the nice. It questions the gap between the art world and the creativity of everyone else. I would like the viewer to question their own cultural standpoint "My taste is better than yours". Bogamia Mag: What is your favorite artwork and why? A: My favourite is "Fairy" because there is a bit of painting under the neck that I'm especially pleased with.

“THE CREATIVE PROCESS BEGINS IN MY DREAMS. I CONSIDER MYSELF A PERSON THAT NEVER SLEEPS. I JUST CLOSE MY EYES AND WHEN I “SLEEP” I AM CREATING MY NEW WORLD. MY VISION IS TO BE BEAUTIFUL TO THE WORLD AND THE WORLD WILL GIVE YOU WHAT YOU DESERVE. THAT IS WHY I GIVE MY BEST WITH MY WORK. I DON’T SAY IT WITH WORDS, I COMMUNICATE IT WITH MY ART. I LIKE TO PAINT POSITIVE THINGS AND INFECT THE WORLD WITH POSITIVISM. AND IN THE FUTURE I HOPE TO STAY HEALTHY SO I CAN CONTINUE PAINTING AND KEEP ON SPREADING THE ENERGY” LEONARDO HIDALGO, ARTIST

AMANDALYNN Fine Art from San Francisco

b

Coming from a traditional fine art background, Amandalynn takes her expertise in art and painting into an array of applications. She studied at the Academy of Art in San Francisco and received a Bachelor’s of Fine Art with an Illustration major. After school, she worked independently and freelance on many mural productions and theater set painting. Amandalynn then reached further into the study and application of paint through the automotive industry, where she painted, repaired, custoamized and restored motorcycles, cars, trucks, helmets, bicycles and much more. Her work in this industry taught her the necessary skills to successfully and properly restore and create sculptures for many Universities, Museums, Art Centers and private collectors. Amandalynn loves to paint and ‘fix’ objects back to their original beauty. Her passion lies in the creation of fine art, which she implements in her personal work, as well as in assisting other artists during the creation and repair their own projects. Amandalynn has an inexhaustible imagination and energy for the development and production of any and all types of art. She recently has begun further expanding her skills into the fashion design industry and merchandising display. Amandalynn continues to push her own fine art career by hosting, curating and participating in gallery shows around the world. JASMINE BECKET-GRIFFITH Mystical Art from Florida.

b Interview Bogamia Mag: JASMINE BECKET-GRIFFITH

JASMINE BECKET-GRIFFITH

Bogamia Mag: At what point did your interest in fantastic art began? A: As a child I had a lot of fairytale books, loved Disney movies, Brian Froud books/movies, whimsical toys, that sort of thing. I had always have been an artist I suppose, but I first began taking it "seriously" when I was about 12 or so. That was when I became very interested in contemporary fantasy art specifically- I played a lot of Dungeons and Dragons, read a lot of fantasy novels (particularly the Dragonlance series, lots of TSR stuff ), that type of thing. I had received the "Art of the Dragonlance Saga" art book for my birthday and I read it fervently, drawing all the pictures in it - it struck me, reading about all of the artists in the book, that being a fantasy artist really was a viable career option, and that's when I first began considering it. I'd been drawing and painting since I was just a little kid, but I'd say 6th or 7th grade was when I really started looking at the future and considering fantasy artwork as a career. Bogamia Mag: Exactly what fantastic being inspires you? A: Mostly I would say creatures that are somewhat like humans - but better. Mermaids, faeries, dryads, nymphs, etc. - I see them as being what humans would be more like if the world were a better place. They interest me because as a humanoid myself, I can see my self in them, but more idealized and magical. Bogamia Mag: Do you have an ideal time to draw or paint? A: I like painting all the time, I don't have a favourite time really. I paint anywhere from 10-18 hours per day, pretty much every single day. Within the contextual timeline of the painting itself, my favourite times are at the very beginning when the canvas is almost bare, and I get to decide where everything goes! And then also when I'm about 3/4 of the way finished, and I get to start adding all the pretty things like highlights, leaves, hair, etc. Bogamia Mag: We find in your works dragons, and magical animals, tell us about your love for these beings. A: I love animals & the natural world very much already - I'm a vegetarian and feel very strongly about animals in general. My interest and love also extends to the fantasy world as well - I see magic in everyday creatures and I definitely extrapolate that to fantastical animals too. I think that many people can identify with the power and inspiration behind creatures like dragons or phoenixes and since so many of these magical animals have long traditions within the histories of so many cultures, there is a universal appeal to them!

Bogamia Mag: Your art is quite mystical, do they tend to reflect dreams?

b

A: Actually I very rarely dream! I'm not sure why, perhaps because I am a very light sleeper and I don't often fall into a deep enough sleep. I think maybe because I don't dream a lot, that makes me explore more dreamlike ideas & imagery in my paintings! Bogamia Mag: Tell us about the small sculptures and the Tarot Deck. How did this idea come about? A: Both have been many, many years in the works! With the Oracle Deck - that is something I've wanted to do since I was a kid. I actually started on several handmade decks and divination tools when I was still in school. I have collected decks of all kinds for the past 20 years and as my own art career began to take off, I couldn't wait to have a deck of my own! I was very happy when one day out of the blue I got an email from Blue Angel publishers, and they asked me if I'd be interested in working with the talented author Lucy Cavendish on a divination deck. Of course I said - YES! I wanted to do a more esoteric "oracle" style deck rather than a traditional Tarot deck for several reasons. Firstly because so many other wonderful folks have already done magnificent things with Tarot decks, hehe. Secondly because I wasn't really keen on doing a bunch of the Minor Arcana (with the way my brain works, it's kinda hard to get excited about painting a lot of the more symbolic cards as opposed to more illustrative cards, and the way my schedule works it'd be hard to work in an extra 78 specific paintings with a limited tarot-iconography that year). Thirdly & mostly though, I thought it'd be a wonderful opportunity to create a more immersive Jasmine-universe with a freeform deck that was actually inspired by specific characters and beings I have created over the years - and it gave Lucy the opportunity to "go wild" with the book part of the project, with a lot of creative control and less traditional restrictions. The deck - "Oracle of Shadows and Light" has been phenomenally successful and Simon & Schuster has just picked it up for the new US Edition on their Simon Pulse imprint. In fact, Lucy & I are working on TWO more decks with Blue Angel now too - "Oracle of the Shapeshifters" which is due out this August, featuring my animal & magical animal themed paintings, and then next year a Vampires themed deck focusing on my darker works. Speaking from personal experience, there is an amazing insight that can arise from using your own deck with your own artwork - it's been such a great opportunity for me! Statues/sculptures/figurines are another really fun & important part of my career. Ever since I began showing my paintings publicly, many people began inquiring after three-dimensional versions of my characters - folks wanted dolls, figurines, ornaments, etc. I think my paintings have a depth and character to them that really cried out for the physical world as well as the painted one! Over the past decade several companies have approached me for the license to market the sculptural side of my work, most notably the Bradford Exchange, Pacific Trading, Hamilton Collection, and Ashton-Drake. It has been a BLAST working with all of these folks to create 'real' versions of my little girls. It's almost like seeing my paintings "come to life" in front of my eyes. It's also a great way to reach a larger amount of people - those who are involved with the collectibles & figurine side of art collecting, even children who want to decorate the shelves in their rooms, or even for people who just don't have wall space to display larger paintings or posters - most people can find room for a little fairy statue to brighten their day! I'm also very thankful for the variety of opportunities that the sculpture/collecitbles market has opened up for me - projects with Disney (like my new line of Tinker Bell faeries of my design with Hamilton Collection), dozens of charitable fundraising figurines for Breast Cancer Awareness, Alzheimers, Ovarian Cancer, etc. - ways I can feel I'm "doing some good" in the world in addition to creating art, and on a personal level it's just so much fun having little dolls sitting around my art desk, like they're my babies! Bogamia Mag: Any message to convey to the Public? A: I'd like to invite everybody to check out my website - http://www.strangeling.com and my Facebook http://www.facebook.com/pages/Jasmine-Becket-Griffith/47932244366 - I post new projects and paintings all day long and I really enjoy interacting with my fans & collectors!
