A clear vision helps an institution define its objectives and articulate its commitment to a diverse set of stakeholders, including students, faculty and staff, benefactors, regents, local communities and the general public. Affecting this perspective is a heightened awareness of global environmental problems and how every individual and organization is interconnected in this problem and its solution. Jannes Library & Learning Center AT THE KANSAS CITY ART INSTITUTE The library and learning center—an addition to a 1912 Georgian style mansion on the Kansas City Art Institute campus—is a valuable asset to the learning environment. The parti places the utilitarian functions such as computer lab, study areas and administrative offices to the north and library functions to the south in a move that provides a structural containment for the library stacks and open daylit areas for reading and studying in key areas where the buildings connect.

School Of Nursing & Student Community Center THE UNIVERSITY OF TEXAS HEALTH SCIENCE CENTER AT HOUSTON This 195,000 sf, eight-level facility provides increased air quality and natural daylighting, reduction of polluting emissions and run-off and increased user satisfaction and productivity. Unique strategies, such as a breezeway connection and five faรงades that each use unique fenestration and sun screening strategies, allow the building to thrive in the harsh Houston climate. Christopher S. Bond Life Sciences Center UNIVERSITY OF MISSOURI The 230,000 sf Life Sciences Center unites faculty and students from six colleges into one, cooperatively focused research center for joint research into genomic and biomolecular structures. Stateof-the-art laboratories, shared meeting areas and public spaces provide unsurpassed opportunities for interdisciplinary biomedical science and agricultural biotechnology research. Fayez S. Sarofim Research Building HOME OF THE BROWN FOUNDATION INSTITUTE OF MOLECULAR MEDICINE THE UNIVERSITY OF TEXAS HEALTH SCIENCE CENTER AT HOUSTON The Fayez S. Sarofim Research Building is a comprehensive research facility on a tight urban site within the Texas Medical Center campus supporting research collaboration in the area of molecular medicine, particularly in genetics and proteomics and bioinformatics. The building houses dry and wet laboratories, offices, conferencing areas, a 200-seat assembly facility and diverse support spaces in a uniquely organized multi-disciplinary and collaborative environment built upon sustainable principles.

Nollen House Addition GRINNELL COLLEGE This project is an addition to an historic residential structure used as office space for the Central Administration of Grinnell College. The addition provides additional office space, conference room/classroom and accessible entrance to the facility. The expanded facility is located in a transition zone between the academic campus and a private residential neighborhood that is comprised of a number of historic residential structures, which are owned and occupied by the College. The addition is composed of a grade level entry “link� and a simple gable two story structure that complements but does not replicate the existing historic structure. The conference room/classroom is located to take advantage of the views of campus and to provide a welcoming image to guests, students and faculty at the new grade level entry.

Art Building West Flood Recovery FLOOD MITIGATION PROJECT | UNIVERSITY OF IOWA The University of Iowa Art & Art History Building is a Nationally & Internationally recognized building designed by Steven Holl Architects. The building was completed in 2005 with much acclaim in local, national and international press. In 2008 the Iowa River flooded after substantial effort by the University of Iowa and the City of Iowa, resulting in flood damage to over 20 buildings on the University of Iowa campus. The Art & Art History Building had nearly five feet of water above the grade level and completely filled the lower level mechanical and building infrastructure space. BNIM and its consultant team were entrusted with the design and documentation of the recovery of the building to its original condition, incorporate user and university requested improvements and modifications, and provide a study and cost information for numerous flood mitigation alternatives to prevent future flooding including.

Rockhurst University MASTER PLAN In 2008 BNIM, in collaboration with Einhorn Yaffee Prescott, was selected to create a new Master Plan for Rockhurst University in Kansas City, Missouri. This project entailed a comprehensive planning process that supported the University’s Institutional Strategic Plan. Looking beyond the campus to its urban and global context, the planning team addressed the campus’s future growth with a focus on environmentally conscious design. The plan included sustainable strategies that will decrease energy and water usage and improve indoor air quality in campus buildings. Additionally, the team integrated solutions to use the landscaping as a tool that will improve the University’s negative impact on the environment through the use of systems like raingardens and native restored habitats. Health Science Education and Research Buildings Planning Study UNIVERSITY OF MISSOURI - KANSAS CITY In 2009, BNIM, in collaboration with The Clark Enersen Partners, was selected by the University of Missouri-Kansas City (UMKC) to provide programming and conceptual design services for a new Health Sciences Education Building to serve primarily the School of Medicine, renovation of the existing School of Medicine Building, a new Translational Clinical Research Building and a new Health Sciences Research Building, all located within UMKC’s Hospital Hill campus. After completing programming and conceptual design services for the UMKC Hospital Hill Campus, BNIM began a multi-phased renovation project on the 254,000 square foot School of Medicine building, scheduled to take place over the next several years. The first phase is comprised of approximately 11,000 square feet on the first and third floors.

Eden Hall Campus Master Plan CHATHAM UNIVERSITY Chatham University’s Eden Hall Campus (EHC), 25 miles north of the main campus in Pittsburgh, will be home to the new School of Sustainability and the Environment and a model sustainable living and learning community for the region and beyond. BNIM and Andropogon Associates worked to align the vision of University stakeholders and plan a restorative campus that will enhance the regional environment, ensure the long-term financial success of the University, and create quality of life and learning for current and future students. With the EHC, Chatham aims to become a international leader in selected issues related to the environment and sustainability. Academic programs will focus primarily on translating research into practice, and developing and demonstrating solutions to issues related to the environment and sustainability.

Oberlin Green Arts District CAMPUS PLAN | OBERLIN COLLEGE & CONSERVATORY Oberlin College is a national leader in both the arts and environmental sciences. The plan for the Green Arts District is to augment Oberlin’s world-class reputation with facilities that bring the arts and sciences together in a way that transforms human potential and the way it is communicated. The District will be a global model for high performance buildings and whole systems thinking, maximizing the ability to build synergistic relationships between infrastructure, ecology, economy and human productivity and prosperity. The current Development Plan includes recommendations for growing a sustainable future at the College and the town of Oberlin. Five principles are outlined to guided the development: pedagogy, post-carbon economy, community, exploration and sustainablility. As a result of this work the City of Oberlin and the College are in the process of obtaining recognition by the Clinton Climate Initiative as a climate positive development.

Odum School Of Ecology THE UNIVERSITY OF GEORGIA In 2007, the University of Georgia established the world’s first independent school of ecology. The following year, the school’s representatives set out on an endeavor to guide the planning and design of a new 150,000 sf facility that would exemplify the school’s values and mission and that would be ecologically resilient, socially just and economically sound. Currently in early design, the Odum School of Ecology is on track to exceed the highest level currently offered by the USGBC’s LEED program to achieve Living Building status. As a Living Building, the Odum School will generate zero net carbon and zero-net waste. The building will foster regenerative symbolic relationships between humans and natural systems and will inspire and teach those who encounter and interact with the building and site.

Harold M. & Beverly Maurer Center of Public Health UNIVERSITY OF NEBRASKA MEDICAL CENTER The Center of Public Health at the University of Nebraska Medical Center establishes a common identity for the eleven academic Departments and Centers of the College, providing a single location on campus for research, teaching and community outreach related to public health. The design of the building supports the College’s goal of promoting healthy and productive communities. To allow maximum flexibility in hours of operation, the three-story, 50,000 square foot building is organized so that the classroom wing can operate independently from the office wing. Medical Education & Biomedical Library UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA - LOS ANGELES BNIM is leading a comprehensive design team to develop a new building for the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA that will establish a new gateway for the Health Sciences campus, create a front door for the School of Medicine (SOM) and integrate the new building with existing facilities to provide greater campus connectivity and new outdoor spaces. The team has developed a Design Brief that includes a space program for the School of Medicine and Library functions, a master plan for the Health Sciences campus precinct, and a conceptual design for a new building in conjunction with the repurposing of an adjacent, existing structure for the Biomedical Library which will serve the entire campus.

Rockhurst University North Garage KANSAS CITY, MISSOURI The Rockhurst University North Garage is a mixed-use facility serving the campus and adjacent community. The garage is strategically located on the edge of the campus and along Troost Avenue, a once prominent Kansas City business thoroughfare that is in the midst of great revitalization. Relocating surface parking from the middle of campus to the parking garage encourages a more walkable campus, while providing new street level business fronts along Troost Avenue. Connection to public transportation is also provided by integrating a transit stop along the Troost storefronts. All vertical transportation through the garage is secured for user access and safety. Registered with the USGBC for LEED Silver certification, this garage is continuing the efforts of the University and neighborhood of making a sustainable community and livelihood.

Missouri State University Renovations SPRINGFIELD, MISSOURI This renovation project included the complete exterior makeover of a Residence Life complex at Missouri State University, including Hammons House, Hutchens House and Garst Dining Center. The complex was battling water and air infiltration, aging dark bronze glazing systems and failing exterior insulation finish systems. The renovation replaced all exterior facades with new window and entrance assemblies consisting of low-e coatings for improved energy performance and maximized daylight. New waterproofing and air barriers systems, combined with insulation and a ventilated rainscreen system composed of reconstituted stone, keeps the building dry and conditioned. Faรงade elements introduce playful patterns in glass and panel reveals. At the main Garst Dining Center entrance, major site improvements create a welcoming new plaza that is highly accessible and offers shuttle pickup, new bike storage and state-of-the-art site drainage. The new entrance now opens the dining center to the plaza, providing outdoor dining and visual connections inside and out.

School of Medicine Docent Units UNIVERSITY OF MISSOURI IN KANSAS CITY After completing programming and conceptual design services for the UMKC Hospital Hill Campus Health Sciences Education and Research Buildings, BNIM began a multi-phased renovation project on the 254,000 square foot School of Medicine building, scheduled to take place over the next several years. The first phase was comprised of approximately 11,000 square feet on the first and third floors. The primary program areas for the renovation were a Computer Test Lab and a prototypical design for a Docent Unit. The Docent Unit design was developed as part of an overall planning study in creating 32 Docent Units on the third and fourth floors. This renovation provides four of those Docent Units, with the additional Units being constructed through future phases of renovation.

Visual Arts Building UNIVERSITY OF IOWA BNIM is working with Design Architect Steven Holl Architects to design the University of Iowa Visual Arts Building. The facility will replace the School of Art and Art History functions that were housed in the 1930’s Art Building, which experienced significant flood damage in 2008. The facility will provide studio space for ceramics, sculpture, metals, photography, print making, and 3D multimedia. It will also include space for graduate student studios, faculty and staff studios and offices, and gallery space. The design team is currently contemplating sustainable design strategies including daylighting, natural ventilation, thermal mass storage, a geothermal well system, earth tubes and numerous other concepts. The Henry W. Bloch Executive Hall FOR ENTREPRENEURSHIP & INNOVATION | BLOCH SCHOOL OF MANAGEMENT, UMKC The path of innovation is never a straight line. Teng Kee Tan, the Dean of the School, had a vision for utilizing design thinking to teach innovation and entrepreneurship. His challenge to BNIM was to create an environment that supported his pedagogy. BNIM, in collaboration with Moore Ruble Yudell, worked with the Henry W. Bloch School of Management at the University of Missouri-Kansas City to design a new facility. The Henry W. Bloch Executive Hall for Entrepreneurship and Innovation provides new spaces to meet the demands of increased student population, the specialized needs of entrepreneurial education programs, and to serve the growing executive education programs of the Bloch School, while also addressing the unmet needs for teaching spaces for the school’s undergraduate and graduate programs. The upper three floors of the building are connected by an open, light-filled lobby, including an amphitheater that serves as a gathering area for the entire school. Bloch Executive Hall is a place for discovery, creation, learning, research, and collaboration for people from across the university and community. IN COLLABORATION WITH MOORE RUBLE YUDELL

Troxel Hall Auditorium IOWA STATE UNIVERSITY Construction recently began on Troxel Hall Auditorium on the Iowa State University Campus. BNIM’s design incorporates cutting-edge teaching technologies and high performance sustainable strategies. Troxel Hall Auditorium will be a freestanding facility with a 400-seat lecture auditorium designed with swiveling seating and tier arrangements to encourage and promote interaction among students. The pre-function space within Troxel Hall will provide studying and gathering areas for students before and after class, including access to monitors for individual and group study as a continuation of the collaborative teaching methodology. The hall will be equipped with state-of-the-art technologies such as data projectors, document cameras and an audio system. The building’s design includes numerous high performance sustainable strategies including stormwater management strategies, natural daylighting, external shading systems, high performance glazing and energy recovery strategies. It will also feature recycling collection areas a roofing system that utilizes highly reflective material and a green roof to reduce energy needed for cooling.

Psychology & Learning Center UNIVERSITY OF IOWA BNIM is currently designing the Psychology & Learning Center on the East Campus of the University of Iowa. The facility will provide general purpose classroom facilities including three, 54-seat TILE classrooms, renovated auditoria, breakout rooms and space for studying, gathering and socializing. The facility will serve as the new front door for the Department of Psychology, providing administrative functions, research laboratories, seminar rooms, graduate student offices, collaboration space and faculty offices. The new facility is targeted to be an example of sustainable design. Numerous high performance sustainable strategies are being considered for the design of the facility including daylighting, natural ventilation, a green roof, efficient mechanical systems distribution design and layout, high performance glazing and building envelop integrated solar shading devices.

Engineering VI Phase 1 UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA - LOS ANGELES BNIM is currently working with Moore Ruble Yudell and UCLA to design new facilities for the Henry Samueli School of Engineering and Applied Science (HSSEAS): a NIST-funded 61,625 gross square foot phase 1 building known as the Western Institute of Nanoelectronics (WIN) and Green Engineering and Metrology (GEM) building, followed by a 95,000 GSF Phase II laboratory addition. The development of the WIN-GEM building represents the highest of aspirations for the research community in supporting the advancement of clean and green technologies. The building will house three primary driving Centers of Excellence in the field of nanosystems and clean technology. When completed, the total engineering complex will incorporate between 150,000 to 170,000 GSF comprised of flexible wet and dry research laboratories; faculty, graduate and post-doc offices; conference spaces; supporting interaction space within various configurations; and a Conference Center that includes flexible meeting rooms and a 250-seat multi-functional auditorium. Price Gilbert - Crosland Tower Renewal GEORGIA INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY In February 2014, BNIM and a multi-disciplinary team of high performance, integrated design consultants were contracted by the Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia to provide comprehensive design services to adaptively reuse Price Gilbert Memorial Library and Crosland Tower on the Georgia Institute of Technology Campus. The two buildings will be transformed into Georgia Tech’s vision for the Research Library of the 21st Century. The project is a critical initiative of the Campus Strategic Plan and vision for transforming the campus into a knowledgebased community, including deepening its connection and interaction with Atlanta and the State of Georgia and redefining the role of the University. Defining the Research Library of the 21st Century was an intentional, focused and informed process involving the entire campus. The transformation is founded on changes in the way that students and faculty currently use the library, as well as future trends in library utilization on peer campuses across the country. No longer a building where knowledge is simply stored, Georgia Tech conceived of a place where knowledge is generated. Stacks of books will be moved offsite to create spaces for people, whether they want to study alone or discuss ideas in collaborative groups. To aid with the discovery of knowledge, the role of the traditional librarian will be redefined, shaping them into connectors who will assist students in bridging the gap between what they know and what they want to know. The BNIM team utilized the community’s vision and roadmap findings to program and design the transformation of both buildings into a scholarly community of inspirational spaces. In the spirit of a knowledge-based community, the new library design aspires to be extroverted and porous, and it is well integrated and connected to the campus and community. Central to the long-term success of Price Gilbert and Crosland Tower is the concept of “long life, loose fit” — that the ability to address future, unanticipated needs is something that can be designed. Price Gilbert, with its open plan and high-ceilinged reading rooms, is already an exemplar of this mentality; the goal is to capitalize on and retain its adaptable nature while providing for the same at Crosland Tower. The renovation will create spaces that are functional, flexible, and have plentiful daylight and views. The design team is incorporating many sustainable strategies into the design, including chilled beams for cooling and LED lighting throughout the buildings. After the renovation, the population using the buildings will have doubled—the 1,250 seats currently in the buildings will grow to 2,360—yet total energy consumption will be reduced by about a third, and energy consumption per capita will be 80% less than what it is currently. It is Georgia Tech’s top priority to renew these built assets and extend their useful lives. The improvements involve careful consideration of the building envelope, energy use, building systems, accessibility and life safety requirements, occupant health and well-being, and connection to the surrounding campus. When complete the two buildings will operate as one library composed of complementary yet individual architectures.

Patient-Centered Care Learning Center and School of Medicine UNIVERSITY OF MISSOURI, COLUMBIA The University of Missouri School of Medicine (SOM) was tasked with expanding its enrollment in response to a call from the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) for all medical schools to increase enrollment by 30%. The SOM has partnered with CoxHealth and Mercy health systems out of Springfield, MO to create a clinical campus in Columbia, which will help meet a critical need for more physicians. This public-private partnership will bring transformational change by ultimately providing more than 300 additional physicians for the state, adding more than $390 million annually to Missouri’s economy and creating 3,500 new jobs. When BNIM was selected to design the new space that will accommodate the growing number of students, the SOM’s initial approach was to vertically expand the existing Medical Science Addition (MSA) as a result of a feasibility study from 2004. However, changes in building code between when the MSA was constructed in 1987 and today would require adding reinforcement and bracing to the existing structure, taking money away from the project budget that could be utilized elsewhere. BNIM’s team designed an alternative that called for new construction on top of the existing MSA, and also a small-footprint addition to the MSA’s immediate west side, which will significantly enhance the primary entrance to the SOM and create a street-side entrance for all of MU Health Sciences. This solution maximized the SOM’s budget and resulted in a more effective, high-performing design. The SOM’s focus on patient-based care defined the ultimate design, which includes improved daylight quality, access to views of campus, more generous amenities for students, and an enhanced focus on providing a facility that promotes collaboration among students, faculty, and staff. By improving its technology, increasing lab sizes and providing additional space for first- and second-year medical students, the new SOM will become a recruiting tool.

Center for Creative & Performing Arts PRINCETON UNIVERSITY This project at Princeton University consists of three contemporary buildings that will share a common reception area and will house several public spaces, including an art gallery, a black box theater, a dance studio and a music rehearsal room. The buildings will also include offices, a 200-seat lecture hall, a box office and a cafÊ. The project has an energy goal of a 50% reduction of ASHRAE baseline. Princeton’s policy is not to pursue LEED, but to go beyond LEED and focus on maximum carbon reduction throughout the design, construction and operation of the facility. BNIM is serving as Associate Architect with Design Architect Steven Holl Architects. BNIM will be responsible for implementation of the design, documentation, and construction of the project. The Center is currently in early design phase and is anticipated to be completed in 2016.

The Center of Excellence for Energy Technology TARRANT COUNTY COLLEGE The Tarrant County College Energy Technology Center (ETC) will house the Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning, and Refrigeration (HVACR) Program, as well as training programs for oil, gas and renewable energy technologies. Located in Fort Worth, Texas, on the TCCD South Campus, this facility sets a new course for development on a campus largely built in the 1970s and will be a premier training center for its students, faculty and the greater community. The project seeks to achieve and go beyond LEED Platinum with a goal of net zero energy use. Aggressive sustainability goals established by TCCD, and refined during programming, created a foundation for vetting project decisions. Lead by BNIM in partnership with Freese and Nichols, design was a collaborative effort involving faculty, administrative and campus facilities personnel. With goals of LEED Platinum and net zero energy, the ETC will operate as a high performance building and will be a living, teaching and learning laboratory. The building will be a pedagogical tool allowing occupants to observe its inner workings and mechanics. Plumbing, electrical, mechanical, and structural components will be openly visible in strategic locations, giving students and visitors the opportunity to learn from the building systems on a daily basis. Digital displays will provide real-time feedback and informative data about how the building systems are performing. In essence, the entire building will become an instructional environment. The project team worked to optimize energy use and enhance learning in the new facility, creating a physical expression of energy and education, key focus areas in the curriculum. Conventional classrooms and computer classrooms will support lab workshop spaces, specifically tailored to the instructional programs. A public lecture hall will welcome the local community to learn about new technologies and innovative solutions through the unique design of this building. Collaboration areas at various scales will serve evolving student work habits. Faculty offices and related administrative support spaces are also planned for the building.

McCain Auditorium Study KANSAS STATE UNIVERSITY Focused on increasing the use and viability of the venue, the design of the Kansas State University McCain Auditorium Study proposes a new addition to the west of the existing auditorium space that is conceived as a transparent volume to provide visual connections to the quad and the new exterior courtyard to the west. An additional multipurpose room element, elevated above the new lobby and clad in limestone, is held away from the box of the existing auditorium to allow light into the lobby and to emphasize the existing auditorium form. This design study improves the community outreach experience by adding a more intimate multi-purpose room/performance space and lobby improvements to the existing 1,800-seat auditorium, an opaque limestone box that houses the current lobby and auditorium.

Seaton Hall and Seaton Court Renovation and Expansion KANSAS STATE UNIVERSITY Over the last decade, the College of Architecture, Planning and Design at Kansas State University (APDesign) has undergone a miraculous ascendancy in stature and prestige among the nation’s graduate design programs. The only obstacle in the way of APDesign’s continued forward momentum is the quality and condition of its facilities. The nondescript and opaque buildings do nothing to promote the APDesign program and its innovative design research to a broader audience. BNIM, in collaboration with Ennead Architects, is currently working on an addition and major renovations for the APDesign program. The team wanted to create a space that was atypical with respect to a traditional lecture classroom and more in line with the creative energy of APDesign. The overall project comprises of design studios in which students and faculty work together on projects, and technology-rich computer labs. A major component of the project is a new fabrication lab that features shared fabrication space, a metal shop and welding yard, wood shop, other specialty shop areas, and the full complement of support spaces.
