Wedding Reminiscence

or nearly two decades, Bluffs & Bayous has celebrated our area brides and grooms and their weddings; and we treasure hearing from them throughout the years of their happy marriages. In this issue, we remember with delight the wedding of Bella Lisa (nee Douglas) and Robert (Rob) Jefferson Surrett, formerly of McComb, Mississippi, and now living in Summit, Mississippi, who had theirr destination wedding in Natchez dur-ing the then titled Great Mississippii River Balloon Race in October 2005. This past October, the Surretts vis-ited Natchez for the Natchez Balloon Festival and shared with us happy memories of their wedding that Bluffs & Bayous covered in its 2006 Weddings Issue; they also shared pictures of this recent anniversary weekend. Bella recalled many of the treasured moments from their wedding weekend in 2005, commenting, “I have loved your magazine since day 1! Thanks for an opportunity to touch base with y’all!”

Facing a New Life in a New Year with Faithful Friends Jessica Troutman’s Facebook post, September 2020: 7KHUH DUH PRPHQWV LQ OLIH 0RPHQWV WKDW GHĂ€QH \RX WHVW \RX DQG VKDSH \RXU IXWXUH 8QIRUWXQDWHO\ WKH ODVW IHZ ZHHNV IRU our family have been those moments. This has been a hard moment in time, as I’m used to being the one in our friend group that will literally drag you back from hell itself. In the last three weeks there have been my very best friends that have quite literally dragged me from the very edge of despair and kept my family functioning. To our friends and family I cannot adequately express how thankful I am for you all. I could go into the long spiel, we live in a small town most people already know, but let’s MXVW SURSHUO\ ODEHO LW 7KH\ EHOLHYH , KDYH $/6 :H ZLOO PRYH IRUZDUG ZH ZLOO Ă€JKW WKLV ZH ZLOO SHUVHYHUH Please keep Beck, Carter, Mary Hannah and me in your prayers, as well as my family and our “framily.â€? God grant us the strength to accept the things we cannot change. We are down but not out! ALS took on the wrong person!

W

hen the hearts of a community come together, they can and did make a huge impact in the life of one family who needed their support. As friends learned of the needs of Jessica and Beck Troutman of near Summit, Mississippi, they rallied to help them with travel arrangements to Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland; and they began plans to make this couple’s home the perfect haven for their return. Beck was fully on board to give his wife the surprise he felt she so deserved, while Jessica knew nothing of what was taking place in this small community while she was gone. The Troutmans’ home is situated approximately ten miles outside of Summit, nestled among massive trees on the bank of Topisaw Creek that feeds into the Bogue Chitto River, a serene and peaceful setting for sure. They live there with their two children, Carter and Mary Hannah, and Page 26 { January / February 2021 { Bluffs & Bayous

the family’s three dogs: Fauci, a Golden Retriever; Shoal, Carter’s German Wire Hair; and a small dog named Bogie. Their dog-trot home, purchased seven years ago and including an addition from three years ago, boasts a fabulous den and kitchen area surrounded by windows on two sides that overlook the creek. On the other side of the dog trot are four bedrooms and a playroom. The dog-trot area in the center of the home was the space that needed repurposing to make it more functional. Thus, the plan developed. Three days later, the room had been transformed! To get the plan underway, Gail Ott, a dear friend of the family, and her friends Geri Smith from Jackson, Mississippi, and Larry Pray from Lake Dixie Springs in Pike County, Mississippi, spearheaded all of the work for the surprise home facelift while Jessica and Beck were at Johns Hopkins for nine days. These creative talents who love a project wanted to give the Troutmans a place they could enjoy with friends. Prior to beginning the renovation. Ott and Smith began searching for the perfect pieces to compliment this unique home, shopping in Oxford, Jackson, McComb, and Summit in Mississippi as well as in New Orleans and Madisonville in Louisiana. Bluffs & Bayous { January / February 2021 { Page 27

Fabric was purchased and new curtains made and installed for closing in cold months to keep the room warm. An iron chandelier to provide ambiance for evenings in the dog-trot area was hung over the dining room table. Cabinets to hold glassware were placed on either side of WKH YLQWDJH EDU DQG D ÀIW\ ÀYH LQFK WHOHvision was mounted over the bar table. Another friend located a cane-back sofa and two chairs to complete the room’s cozy seating area. The group then used Jessica’s extensive collection of McCarty pottery as accents in every room of the home. Moreover, Beck surprised Jessica with a complete set of McCarty place settings for their dining table in an area of the room overlooking the creek at the end of the dog trot. Larry Pray drove back and forth for days picking up and delivering the many items acquired to complete this project. He also hung drapes, assembled Jessica’s new art desk, and completed any task needed. Once these innovators completed the dog-trot renewal, they decided to freshen up all the other parts of the home as well. The den area looking over the creek needed very little. The focal point in that room is the sideboard that showcases gold renditions of Page 28 { January / February 2021 { Bluffs & Bayous

the magi as they journey to Bethlehem. Just as the wise men brought gifts to the Christ child, this community brought their own gifts of love to this family. The master bedroom underwent the biggest transformation as the friends provided a new slipcover for the headboard of the bed, brought in a vanity table for Jessica, changed artwork around in the room, and gave the couple proper lighting for reading and relaxing. While traveling to Africa, Jessica and Beck had purchased two beautiful paintings; one now is in the master bedroom and one is in the master bath area.

Quick & Easy Wedding Day, Wedding Party Lunches

O

n the day of the wedding for serving the bride and her bridesmaids or the groom and his groomsmen, we have compiled some easy menus with recipes to prepare the wedding party for the big event. Several of the recipes were pulled from The Natchez Garden Club’s cookbook Over the Garden Wall and in particular recipes therein from the Annex Tea Room. NGC members Margaret Amacker and Ellen Edwards opened the Annex Tea Room in the mid-eighties. Their chicken salad became the talk of the town and has become legendary! To inquire about the cookbook visit natchezgardenclub.com

Menu: Bridal Party Lite-Bite Lunch This easy menu could be served already boxed or buffet style while the honoree and wedding party are prepping for the wedding ceremony.
