Note from the Editor

Welcome to July’s edition of The Felixstowe Magazine

Not only some real summer sunshine, but also some incredible events like Felixstowe in Flower (see page 17), the Felixstowe Art Trail as part of the Suffolk Open Studios and also updates on the good work of the Basic Life Charity (see page 13).

I’d like to introduce a new blogger, Dean Wales. Having the very serious background of being a journalist, Dean is part of the team to share some fun commentary on life!! I hope you enjoy his quirky ramblings! We also now have our Cultural Culinary Corner, to celebrate the many cultures of our little town with something I love best... FOOD! So, if there is any delicious dish you’d like to feature, get in touch! Recipes are published subject to prior tasting: this is vital to testing the authenticity of your dish!! Enjoy the read, fingers crossed for more glorious weather, and get out and about to take advantage of everything our wonderful corner of the world has to offer. Have a wonderful July! Local Business New coffee shop run by Felixstowe locals Graeme Cheshire and Eve Hughes...

The Stables

Set in the beautiful surroundings on Waldringfield Road, we popped along to this new coffee shop to check out what all the fuss was about! And to our delight, The Stables did not let us down. Not only is this new coffee shop set amongst gorgeous fields and near a quaint pond, but the folks who run The Stables are equally as inviting. Here’s what they have to say...

We opened our doors just a few months ago and have received great feedback and support from locals. We pride ourselves in using quality fresh products that are sourced from Suffolk. Most of the produce used comes from Felixstowe and it is wonderful as a coffee shop to be able to support and promote other local businesses in this way. So although we’re on Waldringfield Road, a short trek from Felixstowe, you never feel too far from home. Everything we make is prepared freshly and we try to cater for each individuaI’s needs by also stocking soya and lacto-free milk, decaf tea and coffee. We also have a small supply of gluten-free products. We think that’s what makes us unique and that’s why it’s worth the short journey to come out to visit us.

We open 7.30am-4pm Mon-Sat, so if you’re passing through to get to work, have just dropped the kids off to school, or simply want to start the day off well, come and join us to see the variety of things we have on offer. We also have local crafters and artists displaying their work which you can purchase. Our pond and beautiful grounds means that you, your family, friends and colleagues can all come and enjoy a relaxing breakfast, lunch or impromptu cuppa. On a practical point, there is free parking and we also have disabled access, so the comfort and ease of your visit is guaranteed at each turn. We’d like to thank The Felixstowe Magazine for giving us the opportunity to promote our wonderful new venture. To celebrate our new start, just bring the cutout below with you when you next come in and we will give you a free cup of tea with any purchase! See you soon!

5 Where would we be without the random writings of one of the wittiest fellas from Felixstowe. Introducing Mr Dean Wales ...

The Long Goodbye by Dean Wales

I love my dear old mum, let’s face it, who doesn’t idolise their dearest mater? But of late I’ve been avoiding popping round to see her. Not because I’ve not wanted to be with her, no not at all! I adore the time I spend in her company, but I simply cannot get away! It’s got to a point now that I’ve had to make excuses to avoid the quick drop-by during lunch breaks or on my way home because I know I’ll end up getting really, really delayed.

I don’t know what it is but for some reason, lately the words: “I can’t stay long” or “I really better get off now” quite frankly fail to register. What’s that all about?

Is it a natural manifestation for 70-something mothers to no longer acknowledge that their

Seafront Fish &Pie Restaurant Special Offer: Fish and Chips - £5.20 Monday-Friday (except bank holidays) We also serve a take-away menu and all fish are freshly cooked to order!

offspring could possibly have anywhere else to go? It’s like there’s some kind of departure verb filter that kicks in at the turn of a mother’s seventh decade.

You see, it appears I’m not alone. When I’ve mentioned this phenomenon to my contemporaries, they’ve all said without fail, their mum’s exactly the same. The thing is, I now know when it’s coming and so visits are planned with military precision.

Now, I must give off some signal, whether it’s subtle body language or an absconding pheromone that only my ma can detect, because within a microsecond of considering getting up and going, her slippers are off and a comfy pair of sling-backs are on and buckled. If I clock this behavioural pattern in time, I’ll try and duck the situation by saying: “I’m going to have to rush and oh, it’s really rather chilly outside.”

More often than not, however, she’s out of the Parker Knoll Penhurst chair in Baslow Stripe Mink, with wing back feature and hand-crafted cabriolet legs, her cardie is on and buttoned, her ‘walking-out’ glasses are on and she’s by my car to bid farewell… after she’s told me about my uncle’s bowels, Fanny’s funeral, the cost of a set and pink rinse…

The Felixstowe College Reunion On May 10th 2014 The Felixstowe College Reunion was celebrated to mark 20 years since the school closed. Nearly 200 ex-pupils and staff gathered for the first big reunion since the school closed its doors in 1994.

People flew from literally all over the world for the occasion; there were girls there from the Far East, Bermuda, Dubai, France, Spain and the USA. During the afternoon, the owners of many of the old boarding houses and the chapel kindly opened their doors to show the ex-pupils around what are now beautiful private homes and businesses. An evening reception was held at the Orwell Hotel where there was a large amount of

memorabilia on display including mannequins dressed in the school uniform and games kit!

A special cake was cut by Mrs Dawn Cuthbertson (nee Guniness), who was headmistress from 1979-1988 and a resounding rendition of the school song was sung, with the song writer in attendance (David Savill, the chaplain at the school until 1990). It was such a success that another one is being planned for 10 year’s time!

Local Group

Coasters Scooter Club

The Coasters Scooter Club was formed in 1961 with the original name of The Felixstowe and District Scooter Club. It was one of the largest scooter clubs in East Anglia. The original club used to have formal meetings where minutes were taken and subs paid and some of the original minutes books are still in existence.

Some current members of the Coasters are from the original group formed in 1961, others are scooter enthusiasts from the 70’s, 80’s and beyond and their children who will soon be old enough to get their own scooters, but many more are new to the scooter scene and loving it.

The club now meets at the White Horse pub, Capel St. Mary, Ipswich every Wednesday night. Once a month the club meets to discuss events that are taking place in that month, then the other Wednesday evenings we meet informally. As well as making new friends with the common bond of the scooter, it has brought many old friends back together.

Local Group News from the Felixstowe Society...

What do you know about Felixstowe’s architecture? Travelling around the world, it is easy to make comparisons between Felixstowe and the multitude of seaside towns in far-flung continents. The buildings, the green spaces (fast diminishing), the historical heritage and the prom are perhaps taken for granted by those of us who live in this wonderful seaside town.

Believe me, there are far many worse places to live.

The Felixstowe Society’s Vice-Chairman, Phil Hadwen, has organised an architectural survey of buildings of various types in Felixstowe. Members of the Society are being encouraged to look more closely at their surroundings and vote for their selection. I confess that I am spoilt for choice. What would you choose?

The Society produces booklets, on sale at the Tourist Information Office, such as the Cotman Walk which gives an opportunity to view so many buildings designed by local architect Thomas William Cotman. Harvest House, The Orwell and the Fludyers are just some of his designs.

Have you walked the length of Hamilton Road and looked up above the modern shop fronts to see existing examples of the town’s Victorian heritage?

provide a fascinating perspective on Felixstowe and Walton’s architecture. Bev Boyce About us

We are a lively group of over 500 members who either live or work in Felixstowe, Walton, the Trimleys and surrounding villages. We want to stimulate public interest in the above areas, promote high standards of planning and architecture and secure the improvement, protection, development and preservation of the local environment.

Our varied programme of activities includes speaker evenings, beach cleans, a walking group, outings to local and national places of interest and social evenings. New members are warmly welcome so if you would like to join, please go to the website felixstowesociety.org.uk.

Local Charity & Their News

Basic Life, Community News to Your Door

From the initial idea in 1997, through our acceptance as a registered Charitable Trust in 2000, Felixstowe based BASIC, an independant Charitable Trust, has been able to assist many groups, organisations and individuals with financial, practical and general support. We are a ‘people’ charity and believe our mission is to support those in need and to provide assistance for those who are otherwise prevented from realising their own charitable goals. As we enter July, why not take a moment to think how lucky we are to live in such a wonderful town!

Living by the sea is such a blessing and we are always hearing about how people love to walk along the prom and enjoy the scenery.

Well, BASIC are hoping to make walking the promenade a little more rewarding on Sunday 20th July. We have organised Felixstowe’s first Walk the Walk event. It’s very simple – we are going to meet at The Manor car park, Landguard, at 2pm on the 20th July and then – walk to the ferry.

shows 42nd Street, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang etc). Both are now offering their exclusive support to our charity.

Tina says, ‘I’m more than happy to be involved in any way I can. Your charity sounds fantastic!’ Simon enthusiastically announced, ‘I am so proud to announce that I am now a patron of The BASIC Life Charity based in my hometown of Felixstowe.’

Local Support

The management and staff of local care home Cotman House have been busy raising funds for BASIC. This has included taking part in The Felixstowe Rotary Fun Run, with member of staff, Colin McCulloch, in a ball gown!

Felixstowe Sailing Club are very generously opening their doors to walkers taking part, so there will be the Tina O’Brien and Simon Mayhew opportunity to have a refreshing drink at the destination! The event is free and open to all so please come along and take part. BASIC Founder Graham Denny said the charity were If you are able to get sponsored it would be great and ‘amazed and extremely grateful for the donation BASIC are going to donate the proceeds to the holiday which will help the development of our work in the club held by St.John’s Church for local children each Felixstowe community,’ year, so a very good cause. Traditional sponsor forms are available in both of our shops. If you prefer to give online or remain anonymous we have a Just Giving page at http://www.justgiving.com/ felixstowewalkthewalk.

We’re hoping this will become an annual event and that many people will enjoy and benefit from the walk.

Celebrity Support

BASIC are delighted to announce that we now have two celebrity patrons;Miss Tina O’Brien (Sarah Louise Platt from Coronation St, Casualty, Doctors, Strictly Come Dancing etc) and Felixstowe man Mr Simon Mayhew (West End

Felixstowe listening service

When life hurts - It helps to talk

Life can be painful. Things just don’t always go as smoothly as we would like. We all know the experience of being confronted with a problem that won’t go away, a difficult situation that we can’t seem to resolve, a hurtful relationship. And when it would help to talk things over, there isn’t always someone there to listen. Family and friends want to be there for us but sometimes they can be too close to the situation or want to give us advice when we need to sort things out for ourselves. And sometimes we feel that they won’t understand or we are worried that they may tell someone else. We may even feel that they will judge us, that we will be embarrassed or ashamed. For two and a half years, Felixstowe Listening Service has offered a safe and confidential place where people can talk about their life difficulties, share their story and explore their options. Our volunteer listeners are trained to offer the caring support which helps people to find the right way forward for themselves. We do not offer advice and

Eastcliff Carpets

we certainly never judge people. We are simply there to listen when it helps people to talk. Our service is free, although we do welcome donations. If you would like to know more about how Felixstowe Listening Service might be able to help you, phone Margaret on 07896 326459.

In 1985 Felixstowe Town Council introduced Felixstowe in Flower to promote Felixstowe to visitors, businesses and for the benefit of all local residents. There are more than 250 baskets planted and erected throughout the town. Around 50 of the baskets are sponsored by local companies, organisations, and private individuals. If you wish to sponsor a basket please see below for details.

In addition to hanging baskets, Felixstowe in Flower involves the whole community by offering flower competitions for residential gardens, public houses, hotels, residential homes and allotments. Felixstowe in Flower encourages people of all ages. Schools and nurseries can enter the grow bags competition, painting or schools environmental projects. There is also a tallest sunflower competition for children under 16. Competition entry and sponsorship forms are available to download from www.felixstowe.gov.uk. Further information is available from suefaversham@felixstowe.gov.uk or telephone 01394 288191.

Felixstowe in Flower’s major event of the year is the Awards Ceremony, which celebrates the wonderful contributions made by so many local people. The evening is a community event similar to the ‘Oscars’, awarding prizes and certificates presented by the Mayor of Felixstowe.

The Felixstowe in Flower Committee hopes that the scheme will continue to enhance the town, bringing colour and vitality for all to enjoy. Thank you for all your support in 2014.

Local Law More news from Fiona Sturgeon at Jackamans Solicitors...

A Day in the Life of a Paralegal Hello again! The office has been so busy that it doesn’t seem long ago since my last article, but it’s a great opportunity for me to get to grips with the many aspects of private client law. Last month, my supervising solicitor and I were very kindly invited to attend a local WI meeting where we discussed Lasting Powers of Attorney and Advance Decisions (what many people refer to as a living will). Whilst it’s never nice to have to contemplate needing assistance in the future, we had a very enjoyable afternoon and I hope that we left those we spoke to well-informed of the issues. It was a surprise on my part to learn that it can be so tricky for family and friends to act for a loved one, in the way that they would want, without the right paperwork. As my final exams edge nearer, so does the end of my Legal Practice Course; in fact, when you next hear from me, I will officially be a trainee solicitor

(fingers crossed)! I’m very glad to be staying with the Jackamans team for my two year training contract during which I’ll get the chance to work in some of our other departments, such as commercial and conveyancing. The hard part will be choosing which one to qualify into! Do visit our Felixstowe office at 167/171 Hamilton Road if you would like our assistance on any private client matter.
