Sponsored Page It’s amazing how many artists there are in Felixstowe. To help showcase them, Kerseys Solicitors have kindly sponsored this page...

Local Artist

Mary Wyatt

Many of you may already know Mary Wyatt as she is not only a prolific artist but is also one of the main organisers for Felixstowe’s much loved annual event, Art on the Prom. Here’s Mary to tell us more about herself and what inspires her art.

When did your career in the arts first begin? Though I have worked as a secondary school art teacher for thirty-two years, for the last fifteen years I have worked in Farlingaye High School, Woodbridge. There I taught students from Year 7 to Year 13 and I left teaching in 2006 to focus on my own work. I now work from my studio at home in Felixstowe. What techniques do you work with? I fire in an electric kiln, but I have also experimented for about five years with glazing in a raku kiln. This is a type of low-firing process, which is powered with gas. It was inspired by traditional Japanese raku firing. I have recently bought a pyrometer which measures high temperatures for this kiln, which will enable me to do some more detailed work on glazes and reduction methods with copper glazes. I am constantly experimenting with colours and glazes which is all very absorbing and interesting and I feel very privileged to be able to do this. Tell us about your recent work. My recent work is on a larger scale and I am working with more texture using a hot air gun to dry clay into position. This allows more flexibility and speeds up making the basic structure. It sounds lovely. Are you involved in any art events in Felixstowe? I am one of the main organisers of Art on the Prom Felixstowe which is a great event and helps to promote local artists and the town of Felixstowe. I enjoy working with the artists, entertainers, caterers and local people who make this event so vibrant.

I am a member of Anglian Potters and take part in their exhibitions in Cambridge twice a year and I am also a member of Ipswich Art Society and have exhibited with them in Ipswich. My work is on show at Snape Maltings and the Taplin Gallery in Woodbridge and I am taking part in an exhibition at the Naze Tower in Walton this summer. I am also taking part in Suffolk Open Studios in June and my studio will be open to visitors 6/7th,13/14th, 20/21st, 27/28th June from 11am – 5pm. If readers would like to visit my studio please call 01394 671033 or email marywyattart@gmail.com. Cafe Bencotto

My husband and I went on a lunch date! It would be easy to take a lunch date for granted, but we never do, particularly when we have a Yeo voucher making our very generous lunch £5, whoop, whoop! When we first met we used to go to Cafe Bencotto for dates, background. Bencotto is a gathering place where you will but life tends to catch up with you and so I was excited to see a familiar, friendly face across the room to wave to, re-visit our old haunt. where you would feel as comfortable meeting friends for coffee (with a little something, of course) as you would be My ‘significant other’ has a fondness for the paella there, having lunch on your own. which is chock-full of seafood, one of his favourite things. I chose the Salad Nicoise from the specials board advertised outside, the deal being a choice of pasta, salad or pizza which changes weekly, at £6 for orders before 6pm. When I ordered the salad I was advised that it didn’t come with tuna, and I wasn’t sure how that was going to work out. Actually, it was fantastic! It had the requisite sliced eggs, the green beans, new potatoes and olives, but what absolutely made it was the anchovies.

Looking through the menu, I discovered that they do ‘little plates’ and look forward to gathering some of my girlfriends to pretend to be ‘ladies what lunch’ and pick and share a mini Mediterranean feast. I’m not sure I’m willing to share the newly discovered anchovies however, no matter how good friends they are! Café Bencotto

128 Hamilton Road These anchovies were a revelation, not the salty strips that Felixstowe, my husband loves with pineapple on his pizza (I kid you not), Suffolk but plump, savoury and slightly sweet. IP11 7AB I enjoy the atmosphere at the Bencotto; it feels casual, but 01394 276745 still special, bustling but with a waft of Dean Martin in the www.cafebencotto.co.uk

Local Business We’re not the only ones celebrating a special birthday. Eastcliff Carpets are now on their fifteenth year!

Eastcliff Carpets

2015 see’s Eastcliff Carpets celebrating fifteen years of trading. Since 2000 local business owner, Gareth Cook, has built Eastcliff Carpets from the early days working out of a van, taking samples to customers to where the showroom is now in Walton.

Gareth is first to admit it hasn’t been fifteen years plain sailing but with a great team of staff and good business morals providing a local, friendly and honest business for all residential and commercial customers, the business has inevitably grown from strength to strength.

Gareth and the staff at Eastcliff Carpets would like to thank the people of Felixstowe and surrounding areas for their continued support since the humble beginnings to now and is confident that he can continue to provide the quality of service he has come to be well known for, for many years to come. With the flooring industry much like many others changing as new products are developed, Eastcliff Carpets know the importance of moving with the times, with things like internet and social media, as well as product lines for carpets and flooring.

However fast times progress, one thing that Gareth and his staff want, is to continue with good old fashioned customer service and honest business practice.

Local Charity & Their News

BASIC Life Charity

From the initial idea in 1997, through our acceptance as a registered Charitable Trust in 2000, Felixstowe based BASIC, an independant Charitable Trust, has been able to assist many groups, organisations and individuals with financial, practical and general support. We are a ‘people’ charity and believe our mission is to support those in need and to provide assistance for those who are otherwise prevented from realising their own charitable goals. April is always one of my favourite months - we see the new flowers starting to come into bloom, the weather (hopefully) becomes warmer and we can look forward to lots of lovely longer daylight hours.

This year we also celebrate Easter at the start of the month. As a Christian charity, Easter is an important time and we view it as a period of renewal and new beginnings, a chance to take stock and look forward to the rest of the year with faith and hope. We often get asked about what’s involved for those who volunteer to help us. Well, we have about twenty people across our two shops, who put their time and effort in to help their community. They usually work one morning or afternoon per week (or more if they like!). They are invaluable to our operation and provide us with peoplepower to enable us to help others.

In return they have the knowledge that they are an integral part of their community and, as one volunteer says, “Since I have volunteered for BASIC, I have found a lot more purpose in life. I’ve met lots more people and it’s really satisfying and enjoyable and I feel ‘part’ of everything now”.

Great new spring shrubs and plants, strawberries soon coming... what’s more from Goslings Farm?

New at Goslings Farm

As spring has arrived at Goslings farm, we are busier than ever, over the last few months we have been busy changing and improving the PYO (Pick Your Own) areas, and adding a “home-grown” veg area behind the farm shop so we can supply our own range of lettuce, tomatoes, radishes, peppers and much more. Our first strawberries are now covered and are growing well and enjoying the warmth of spring, we are hoping to start picking about the 14th May. The early strawberries will be a variety called Vibrant, producing large juicy red fruit packed full of flavour. We have replanted the raspberry tunnels, with five wonderful varieties, Glen Lyon, Cascade Delight, Octavia, Joan J and Autumn Bliss, letting us have PYO and ready picked fruit from early June until late September New for this year will be “The Pumpkin Patch.” When autumn arrives, you will be able to choose your very own pumpkin straight from the field.

The Farm Shop has had a change around too! Altering the position of the tills has given us lots more space to stock many more local and scrumptious new products, pop in and have a browse.

With all this happening at Goslings, you’re bound to feeling hungry, so our new Garden Café is the best place to relax with wonderful homemade cakes, light lunches and a full breakfast menu. Pop along and make a day of it.

Local Law More news from Jackamans’ budding Solicitor...

A Day in the Life of a Trainee Solicitor

A question asked by many of our conveyancing clients is how long their transaction will take. When a purchaser wants to move in as soon as possible and a seller is equally willing for the property to be transferred, it is quite common for clients to wonder why the process may still take weeks rather than being wrapped up in a few days. I therefore thought that a brief overview of the steps involved in a typical property transaction would be useful.

Firstly, it is the job of the seller’s conveyancer to collate all necessary documentation, everything from title deeds or official copies of the title register to conservatory guarantees and to send this together with a draft contract to the purchaser’s conveyancer. This person then checks that their client is happy with the documents provided, carries out searches on the property and raises pre-contact enquiries. This stage may take a while as it is extremely important for any issues to be dealt with before contracts are exchanged. Only once everyone is happy to proceed can an exchange take place, the parties become legally committed to the transaction and the deposit is paid. The transfer deed is then completed and final checks are made in readiness for the agreed

completion date, when the deed, the remaining money and the keys are handed over. The transaction is then registered with the Land Registry. Whilst this is merely an indicative overview, each transaction being unique, I hope that it sheds some light on the inner workings of the conveyancing process, which can be confusing for those who have not yet experienced it. One of our main aims at Jackamans is not only to ensure a timely service, but also that matters are conducted properly and given the attention they deserve.

For further information, do contact our Felixstowe office at 167/171 Hamilton Road, Felixstowe, IP11 7DR or call 01394 279636. Fiona Sturgeon

Local Lad Random ramblings by the lovely Dean Wales...

One Foot in the Grave... The Other on a Skateboard As a 35 year old man….what? Okay, as a 45 year old man I’d like to think that I’ve reached a level of maturity which would render me a fully-fledged adult. But it occurred to me the other day just how immature the hunter-gatherer among us can be. It seems we never lose that little boy aspect, deeply rooted in our persona. You see I was strolling out of a well-known supermarket and spotted a 40 something male comrade body-surfing his trolley to his car. Of course I chided such juvenile and potentially hazardous behaviour. Actually I didn’t.

In fact it took all the will power I could muster not to do exactly the same! I was on the verge of resting my chest on the hand-rail, right foot pressed firmly against the tarmac, leg poised ready to give me an initial burst of energy and subsequent trolley-based acceleration. It was only a vicar walking towards me and a security guard that prevented me pushing off with a yell of: “Wheeeeeee!!!” Oh my word! What had gotten into me? Upon speaking to my fellow chaps teetering on middleage it seems it doesn’t stop at shopping trolleys either. A chum of mine confessed that he had only bought his son

ARTHUR’s BUILDING ALL BUILDING WORK & INSURANCE WORK UNDERTAKEN PLASTERING & ARTEXING A SPECIALITY HOUSE REPAIRS & GENERAL MAINTENANCE UPVC WINDOWS, DOORS & CONSERVATORIES FOR A FREE VISIT QUOTE & ADVICE PLEASE PHONE ARTHUR ON

a Scalextric kit for his birthday because he wanted one himself. Fair enough I thought; that was until he further admitted that he wouldn’t even let his son have a turn on it. In fact it resulted in my friend operating both triggers, with his foot on his boy’s chest to prevent him getting to him before he finished a lap.

Another mate proclaimed he bought a Nerf Nite Finder (look it up) so that he could shoot polystyrene suction darts at his girlfriend in the dark. He went to great lengths to tell me about the accuracy of the laser target-sight and that he never failed to hit the mole on her elbow. Challenge a buddy to a race in the pub car park and you’ll see he just won’t be able to resist. The tan loafers will be off and he’ll be in the starting position before you can say Mo Farah. Anyway I’m a grown-up, mature professional so I need to go…I’ve got an office-chair race with my Head of Operations in ten minutes and I need to limber up. @deanwales

B. M Electric Bikes have been in Felixstowe since 2010. Here’s Bruce to tell us about the business...

B. M Electric Bikes

It all started in 2009 when we bought a motorhome and thought a couple of electric bikes would be a good idea as an easy way to explore when away, while leaving the motorhome on site.

When I looked into the electric bike market I found that it was not possible to buy a well-priced, good quality electric bike and some of the bikes we looked at were priced at £2000-£3000 and not up to scratch, quality wise. So I contacted several large factories with details of what I was looking for and after a few months found a company who could build the type of bike I required, at a fair price and good quality.

Since then, B. M. Electric Bikes was formed. We now offer four models: The Freedom Folding Bike, The Romer, The Step Through and The Explorer - Explorer Off-Road. All bikes are fitted with the Lithium Life PO4 battery, a very safe and long life battery, giving up to three times the life of a normal battery. The bikes are made with an alloy frame, alloy wheels, stainless steel spokes, Kenda tyres, which are puncture-resistant and come with a rust-free chain with seven gears. All models have disc brakes (except the folding mode), adjustable handlebars and seats, as well as LED front and rear lights. All bikes have a very strong

rear carrier to take your pannier bags. They are also fitted with stands and come with tool kit, instructions, charger and pump. As a note, our bikes are fitted with a hand throttle. This is very handy to pull away at crossroads or traffic lights and you can also ride our bikes without electric power like a normal pushbike, which makes our electric bikes nice and versatile. We stock all spare parts for our bikes, which also come with a full warranty and are to E.U. specifications and regulations. Caroline Stafford

Turning Trauma into Triumph...

Caroline is going to be running, hobbling, crawling and crying her way around the London Marathon course in April 2015. She hopes this challenge will not only make her fit and healthy, but will also serve to raise money and awareness for an incredible cause close to her heart. We met up with Caroline to find out more… Where do you live and what do you do?

I live on Beach Road West on Felixstowe seafront and I’m the manager at the Old Felixstowe Spa Post Office. Tell us about your cause?

I’m doing a marathon for Meningitis Now. In 2012, when my son was eleven I thought my son had flu, but when I tried to wake him, he was unconscious. We rushed him to hospital to be told he had Bacterial Meningitis. That sounds quite scarey. What happened?

He was in intensive care for 48 hours. It was touch and go whether he’d survive. He had fits while in hospital and such a high temperature. He was on an antibiotic drip for a couple of months. After lots of love and care he was lucky enough to make a full recovery. He’s been so lucky as he’s gotten through unscathed, but there are a lot of children, adults and babies who not so lucky; with Bacterial Meningitis you can lose limbs and hearing. I’m doing the marathon for those people - I want to support those that have battled meningitis and raise awareness so people know how to notice the signs. Well done... How is your son doing now?

He’s thirteen now and doing brilliantly. I ask him to go training with me and he makes his excuses (laughs). He’s so lucky to have made such a full recovery and I’m so relieved for him. That’s great news. Tell us about your marathon?

Through the help of the Felixstowe Road Runners, I’m

Please mention

going to run the London Marathon with my partner in April 2015 with the goal of raising £2000 for Meningitis Now.

That’s pretty immentent - when did you start training?

December 2014. I started off with a five-mile run and added one mile each week. How are you getting on with it?

Good… so far going well and to plan. It’s not easy thing at all. No injuries touch wood. On my long runs I run twenty miles once a week and for small runs five miles at a time per week. Incidentally, Paula Radcliff is running this marathon too (best world marathon time 2hrs and 15mins) as a retirement marathon. Running with the best of them! What response have you received so far from locals in Felixstowe?

It’s just been amazing. I’ve got lots of donations and raffle prizes from great customers, friends and family. I can’t believe the support I’ve gotten so far. Also the stories that I’ve heard from other people about their own experience to do with meningitis is quite extraordinary.

We’re collecting in Sainsbury’s in Martlesham Heath and Tesco on Hamilton Road, and also Old Felixstowe Spa Shop. If anyone is interested in donating money or raffle prizes or perhaps participating in the cause, then please get in touch with Caroline on: 07980 020592 caroline.stafford@tiscali.co.uk www.justgiving.com/carolinestafford
