Note from the Editor

Welcome to January’s edition of The Felixstowe Magazine Some of you may recieve your copy of The Felixstowe Magazine before the New Year or even before Christmas, and some of you after the New Year. Either way, I am really excited to be able to present to you our first ever New Year’s issue!

Having filled our tummies with beautiful festive food and spent valuable and well-deserved time with our friends and family, I’m sure we all now have our fingers and toes crossed that we really do stick to our New Year’s Resolutions!

I’m happy to say that I don’t think I have too many regrets from 2014...a vaste amount of what I was hoping to do has been done and 2015 forecasts new goals to achieve and higher mountains to climb. New Year’s always help me breath a little deeper with the thought that there’s a whole new world to grasp from the coming twelve months. That sounds pretty cheesy, but I’m excited about 2015 and I hope 2015 marks the beginning of many new and exciting things for you too. Here’s to a great year ahead! Happy New Year Felixstowe! War Recollections

Civilians in War Situations by Antony Pittaccio

‘So,’ they ask me, ‘What was it like for civilians caught in the midst of a battle?’ ‘Well,’ I reply, ‘It is noisy, bombs fall, shells explode, people get killed and birds fly away.’ That is the simple answer, but in truth, one makes recourse to the old adage, ‘If you know, no explanation is necessary, if you don’t, no explanation is possible.’ This is perhaps that is why veterans very seldom speak of their war experiences.

When towns are caught in a prolonged battle, the infrastructure of the area collapses, as it did in Cassino, the centre of which the population was forced to leave. There were no police, no hospitals, no shops, no transportation. No one who can advise you. You had to try to find shelter in the countryside. You had to rummage through the fields for something that could be edible. You had to treat your own illnesses, dress your own wounds, bury your own dead. How can parents calm their children who are hungry and there is no food, petrified and when there is no shelter, and when cold and there is no suitable clothing. How do you explain the feeling of utter helplessness and despair when you hear the wounded cry with pain, and there is nothing you can do but cry with them, as I did with my own mother. When you unexpectedly meet someone you know, there is no need for words. The looks on your faces

say everything: ‘Glad to see you are alive. Good luck.’ And you walk on. But as a young teenager, I was fascinated by the luminosity of the tracer bullets fired at night by both sides. With my uncle we would crouch behind a low wall trying to make some sense of the battles raging around us. I was astonished at how noisy battles can be, especially when surrounded by artillery, and I tried to spot where the shells they were firing were landing, whilst fearful of those being fired by the Germans. All those involved in Cassino were symbolically awarded the Gold Medal for Valour when it was bestowed upon the city soon after the war. But in truth, civilians don’t receive medals. Their heroism goes unsung. And yet their feelings and actions of fraternity towards each other in such extremely despairing situations, be it in Cassino, London, Berlin, Stalingrad or wherever, reveal all that is most noble in a human being. It is comforting to know that amidst all the destruction and suffering, there are pockets of goodness that triumph over the surrounding evil.

Felixstowe Secondary Schools’ Archive In recent years there has been much change in the secondary educational provision in Felixstowe. It is a subject which provokes much discussion as much as memories of the previous incarnations of the Academy such as Deben, Orwell, Felixstowe Secondary school, Felixstowe Grammar school etc. Many items from these schools have been collected by Jean Macpherson and a group of volunteers who believe that it is important to conserve the educational history of our town. If you have any items which you could donate to the archive please contact Jean on 01394 272840. One of the volunteers is conducting research on the wartime service of the 36 boys whose names appear on the Grammar school lectern. Felixstowe Coastwatch Are Expanding The Felixstowe Coastwatch organisation are growing and changing. This volunteer operation, part of the National Coastwatch Institute, have a lookout station on top of the Martello tower on the south side of Felixstowe seafront. Senior Watchkeeper Alan Peck said that until now they have only had enough volunteer members to keep a lookout at weekends, public holidays and through the school summer holidays. The past year has seen their biggest ever influx of new volunteers and following an extensive training programme they now aim to begin operating seven days a week from the spring of 2015. Within the Coastwatch station a total of some 50 volunteers share the task of looking out for the safety of all the people and craft using the Felixstowe beach area and the sea. Using a combination of high powered binoculars, computers, marine radios and plotting equipment, Coastwatch work together with HM Coastguard and the RNLI to look out for anyone in need of assistance. Alan said this really does mean anyone, from a child on an inflatable to the largest container ships. Anyone walking along Felixstowe seafront will see a tremendous variety of people, boats and ships using the waters near Felixstowe and Harwich. Alan stated that they keep a close watch over the many people using this coastal area for recreational purposes. He stated that many people come to the sea well prepared and take note of the sea

conditions, the wind and the tide but not everyone does. Kayakers, wind-surfers and kite-surfers are always closely watched to ensure they don’t become totally exhausted after numerous dunkings in the sea.

The role of Coastwatch is to spot, plot and report. This means first spotting an incident, then plotting the position of the incident and then reporting all the details to HM Coastguard. Sometimes this will result in HM Coastguard tasking the RNLI Harwich lifeboat to attend the incident and they may then instruct Coastwatch to guide the lifeboat by radio to the position of the incident. Alan explained that the height of their lookout tower gave them a much better field of view than the lifeboat crew would have from sea level. Many of the watches kept by Coastwatch are routine and incident free but Alan explained that given the size and diversity of the many vessels entering and leaving the Orwell approaches the potential is always there for something of huge significance to happen.

Youth Supporting UN Human Rights Day On December 8th 2014 an exhibition at The Nehru Centre, wing of the Indian Embassy in London, was organised in support of the United Nation’s International Human Rights Day. Where education is often a luxury, many children do not have access to free schooling and this show celebrated that right to education. Twenty-five paintings were themed on the joy, inspiration, freedom and power felt when knowledge is gained and effectively used. In collaboration with the South Asia charter of award-winning educational program, Youth for Human Rights International, we invited schools to participate in the Education is Freedom art competition, to encourage and help youth understand how human rights influences their lives. Armed with the powerful What Are Human Rights DVD, each competitor was asked to draw or paint what human rights means to them and how the world could change if everyone demanded that human rights be respected and upheld. The subsequent paintings submitted

were incredibly moving and I was very proud to announce Jack (aged 12) from a school in Sussex as winner for Best Painting and most influencial writing on human rights. You can see these on the facebook link at the end of this article.

In true British spirit, we also started the ball rolling to fundraise for a new school in the village of Saidpur in India. 10% of all profits from art sales also went to the school. The show may have been held in London, but a huge thanks goes to BASIC and Wainwrights from Felixstowe for supporting our cause, as well as Shane Hickley and his crew for photography and videography!

9 To the right is Jack’s winning painting. We asked each competitor to answer a few questions to see how Human Rights is relevant to them. This is what Jack had to say to our questions:

What inspired you to paint what you did? “I felt sorry for all the people in the world that have no rights. It must be so horrible to be without rights and especially to be detained unfairly (like racism) and not have your freedom, so I made this painting to help in any way I could.” What do you think Human Rights will do for the world? “If everyone used Human Rights then everything would be great, perfect and wonderful. Like a dream come true and people being free. But unfortunately people can't do that because some people are absolutely stupid and horrible. We as a society can't live like this.” What do Human Rights mean to you? “Human Rights help the world. They are rules to follow about how to live happily with other people in the world. They are great and without them we will be doomed.”

We are still fund-raising and selling the paintings so get in touch if you’d like to help.

Place flour into a mixing bowl with suet and a small teaspoon of mixed herbs and a pinch of salt. Rub the fat into the flour as if you are making crumble. Add a small amount of cold water until the mixture is sticky. Sprinkle some flour onto a pastry board and some on your hands, and remove a small amount of dough. Make into small balls but not too tightly. Leave to rest until ready to add to the stew. They usually take about twenty minuted to cook. You can bake them in the oven if you so desire. Place all the cooked stew into a casserole dish and place dumplings on top of the stew and bake in a hot over for about twenty to thirty minutes, Fan ovens take slightly less time. To get the best taste from herbs add them toward the end of cooking. Enjoy your meal and a Happy New Year to you all! Retired chef, Brian A. Blackmore.

There is Help out There You are not Alone

Do you know anybody that has been affected with a terminal illness like cancer or HIV and didn’t know what to do, where to go and how to get support and a FREE nursing service? You are not alone, my name is Angela Bussey and I am the Suffolk Fundraiser for Marie Curie Cancer Care. My aim is to raise awareness and raise much needed donations to keep the FREE service Marie Curie provides going. Currently there are 36 Nurses/ Healthcare assistants in Suffolk (we do have a Nurse in Felixstowe so we are very local), each working in a 30 mile radius from their home, nursing patients that have a terminal illness and don’t want to be in a hospital. So if you thought there was no support for you and your family, you are wrong! Our nurses can be accessed through your local GP or in most cases through your local District Nurse.

In order to raise the funds needed to support the FREE service we provide, I need your help. I am not asking you to give me money (though I would not say NO) I need some of your time. Currently there is a real need in the Felixstowe and surrounding area for new volunteers to help with various roles like:

I am also looking for new members to form a group and help with local awareness and support such as The Blooming Great Tea Party, Festive Fundraising, The Great Daffodil Appeal (2015 February & March) or maybe you would like to organise an event of your own choice. Fundraising groups are a fantastic way of meeting new people, having fun, raising the profile of the charity in your area and they are very rewarding.

In addition to that, I am also in need of Volunteers that can give a couple of hours (or however much time you can give) to support the local Daffodil appeal that will take part in March 2015. In Felixstowe I have a Rotary and a Lions group involved and maybe a couple of supporters but the need for more help is urgent. The collections are planned for the 13/14 March 2015 in the town centre and the local Co-op and Morrison’s on the 20/21 March 2015.

Anybody can collect or help with organising a collection, no training needed and it is very rewarding. The public awaits the Daffodil appeal and makes it really pleasurable to help and give some time to raise money for our much needed nursing service. You also will hear the lovely stories so many people tell you about the help they received from Marie Curie. So if you are able to help in any way and support our cause please contact me: Angela Bussey, Community Fundraiser for Suffolk on 01449 722596 or email: angela.bussey@mariecurie.org.uk

I’m Going to Join a Gym… Right After Easter Blimey! Is it really the New Year already? I hardly caught up with 2014. Well, it is and so Happy New Year to all you readers of the smartest magazine in Felixstowe!

So we’re into 2015 and I suppose it’s time to make those promises to oneself that one just knows one will break within hours of making them….ooh I just went all posh!

Come on admit it, how many New Year resolutions have you actually kept? Huh? I don’t mind you confessing, come on, out with it; after all I’ll disclose to you right here and now that I’ve only ever kept one resolution – and that was to remain suave, sophisticated and deeply mysterious. And I have to say I have stuck to that one meticulously.

The problem with New Year resolutions of course is that they’re just too easy to break or they are so trivial that they just fade into insignificance, never to be pondered over ever again. So the journalist (nosey parker) in me goaded my dear self to ask around chums and colleagues to discover what unfulfillable pledges they’ve made to themselves before on 1st January. Here are some of my favourites...

“I will think of a computer password that is not ‘password’” “I will do more laundry….or use more deodorant”

“I’ll stop working in the lounge in my pyjamas…..in future I’ll take my laptop to bed” “I’ll try not using exclamation marks so much!!!!!!!” “From now on I’ll only eat white snow”

“I’m going stop drinking orange juice after I’ve cleaned my teeth.” “I resolve to begin working with neglected children…..I’ll start with my own.”

Whatever empty promises you intend to make to yourself this year, at least promise me this, make 2015 a happy, healthy, loving year.

And remember the words of the great, late Billy Vaughn: “An optimist stays up until midnight to see the New Year in. A pessimist stays up to make sure the old year leaves.” Happy New Year X

C is in his late 40s. He enjoys swimming, the theatre, shows, the zoo and getting out and about. C would like to meet someone to go for a drink and a chat, possibly a day trip to the coast.

B is 18 and enjoys TV, games, movies, bowling and DVDs. B would like to meet up with someone to go around town, to the pier and generally boost confidence. B has communication difficulties so would need someone patient and understanding.

R is a man in his 90s who enjoys international news, sports and any branch of the military services. He would like to meet someone for company and a chat. If you, or anyone you know, might be able to share a few hours a week or month to help C, B or R or another vulnerable person in your local community, please do get in touch. Full and ongoing support is given and out of pocket expenses are covered. Hello neighbours - I hope this finds you all well?

Our sense of wellbeing can depend on many different things, but having a support network and/ or people you can talk to is so important to our emotional and mental health: everyone needs a friend or friends.

The Befriending Scheme is a registered charity that works across Suffolk to provide friendship and learning opportunities for adults (16yrs+) from vulnerable groups, including those with mental health needs and older people, to our members with learning disabilities.

Here is a sample of local people all living in the Felixstowe area who would love to find a volunteer befriender to enjoy mutual interests and activities, e.g. shopping, gardening, going to the cinema, a walk or just having a chat over a nice cup of tea!

You Need a Coffee and a Cake

The Walton Coffee House

Imagine my glee when I discovered that a coffee house had opened in Walton! I mean truly discovered, fully formed with a ‘You need a coffee and a cake’ sign outside by the time I spotted it. cakes were fresh, light and just plain lovely.

Maybe in recent years we have had to meter out our treats, and although we may not go out for blow-out meals very often anymore, being able to get out for lunch or a tea and cake still feels like a real treat.

I think the Walton Coffee House is a real asset to our village and look forward to treating my sweet tooth again soon and catching up with a girlfriend in the not-too-distant-future over a cup of tea or one of their light lunch options.

I couldn’t believe it had got past me without any prior warning! Even better, it was in a cottage I had always secretly admired; I am not nosy, just socially observant. I quite literally dragged my husband in for a sneak peek.

We walked in to a bright and light room which was buzzy and welcoming. There were two young mums with their rosy-cheeked toddlers preparing to leave, replete on Victoria sponge and a group of girlfriends chatting away on the sofa and chairs.

The local couple who have opened the Walton Coffee House in their own home have only recently decided to take the plunge and we had the opportunity to chat with Sara when she brought our order. She explained that they have a specially chosen blend of coffee, which is smoother than some of the well-known coffee shops and was much more to my taste. All their cakes are freshly made and they had Victoria sponge, apple cake, coffee walnut and lemon drizzle cake available on the day we visited. My husband had the lemon drizzle and I had a slice of the Victoria sponge (for research purposes only, you understand); both

Local Law More news from Jackamans’ budding solicitor...

A Day in the Life of a Trainee Solicitor

I hope you all had a very merry Christmas and a happy new year. My time in the private client department is now coming to a close and I must say that I have really enjoyed it. How time has flown - it feels like only yesterday that I started my training with Jackamans.

The work has been extremely varied and I have a newfound appreciation for the sheer breadth of knowledge that solicitors in this field need in order to correctly advise their clients; the priorities and concerns of each individual can differ so dramatically, there really is no such thing as a ‘one size fits all’ approach. It’s no wonder that some of our clients come to us after bad experiences with asset protection companies whose standard templates are simply unsuitable, not to mention sometimes ineffective in meeting their particular aims.

dealt with some property transactions from a probate perspective, I am very much looking forward to getting to grips with this new area of law, both as a trainee and a prospective home buyer! I certainly hope that my private client experience will hold be good stead and, as always, I’ll be sure to keep you updated with my progress. Fiona Sturgeon

This article provides only a general summary and is not intended to be comprehensive. Specific legal advice should be taken in any individual situation.

By the time of my next update I will have moved to our Ipswich office to join the conveyancing team there. I’ll still be a familiar face in Felixstowe, though – I’m sure I won’t be able to keep away for long! Whilst I have already

Local Charity

BASIC Life Charity

From the initial idea in 1997, through our acceptance as a registered Charitable Trust in 2000, Felixstowe based BASIC, an independant Charitable Trust, has been able to assist many groups, organisations and individuals with financial, practical and general support. We are a ‘people’ charity and believe our mission is to support those in need and to provide assistance for those who are otherwise prevented from realising their own charitable goals.

Firstly we’d like to wish everybody a Happy New Year!

We often find that the start of a New Year is a time of reflection on what has happened in the previous year and some anticipation of what the year ahead might hold.

The people of Felixstowe had some wonderful times during 2014 and the town seemed to come alive when we enjoyed the usual annual events and one or two new ones. A lot also happened with your home charity during 2014 too – we were delighted to add Steph Tortice to our full time staff and we were also so pleased to witness the growth in our food bank which now receives supplies from a wide range of sources in the town and beyond. Thank you to all who contribute! We have been able to pass the food on to those in our community who are in need and we know that your donations have made a massive difference to the lives of others. 2014 was also a year when BASIC were able to enable the promotion of assistance to 8 year old Felixstowe resident Blake and his siblings, by hosting a just giving page for the family. Blake’s amazing family and friends held numerous fund raising events to add funds. At the end of the year the total raised was just under four thousand pounds. In addition we have been able to provide support to many local residents with financial or material assistance.

One of the benefits of being a local charity run by local people is that we can make almost immediate decisions when assisting in emergencies and we know how important this is to those who receive the aid. We have also been pleased to continue breakfast provision for local school children and we hope this idea will grow and that other schools in the area will become involved. Looking to the New Year we have taken the step of adding an additional premises to the two shops we run in Felixstowe and Walton. Our new unit, which will be fully

Our new storage and distribution depot operational during January, will be used for the sorting and distribution of items donated to the shops. This will give us the opportunity to supply a more focussed stock for sale. This is an exciting development for us and we look forward to being able to grow and therefore be able to assist even more local people.

Finally may we say thank you to all who have supported us during the last year – whether with the generous donation of goods, financial support, donations of food products or simple words of encouragement.

Let’s make 2015 a year where we work together to build an even stronger community together!
