Two Felixstowe lads excitedly tell us all about their new kit car they’ve built from scratch... (sigh)... boys and their toy!

Building our Own Kit Car by Jim and Pete

Top Gear...Jim and Pete show off their skills!

Having always had the dream to build their own kit car, local lads Jim and Pete decided to join forces and make it happen! Here’s what they have to say... “Pairing up Pete’s knowledge of mechanics and our mutual love of fast cars, this was truly an amazing opportunity to work together on this project! Wayne (down at Langer Park Service Station) was really amazing at allowing us to use the facilities to get the car ready for its road safety tests. Both of us have our families to look after and work so it took just under 2 years from start to finish... that’s all weekends and evenings. I think our favourite thing about building our kit car is The Grin Factor... you can’t help

but smile! We are well and truly boys when it comes to driving this car! It’s a proper boy’s toy and it handles very, very well. We’d definitely build another kit at some point in the future. Mills Extreme Vehicles (MEV) were the company we used. They give details of the car and how to build it. So long as you’ve got the space and some mechanical knowledge, anyone can do this.” If anyone is thinking about buying a kit, Jim would be happy to talk to you about it. Just get in touch with The Felixstowe Magazine.

Local Lad

Check Her Out! by Dean Wales

I’ve been driving for 25 years now - as the ‘Little Tikes Cosy Coupe’ never existed when I was a kid I can’t declare any pre-pubescent experience behind the wheel - and so I’d consider myself well-versed in the futile overreaction of incensed drivers often referred to as ‘Road Rage’. Little did I know that Road Rage doesn’t just apply to the road....! Until recently whilst I was on a shopping trip in this fair town of ours, I was never really mindful of rapid flare-ups between strangers other than those I’d observed on our roads. It’s funny isn’t it, how some things happen in the most unlikely of places?

Having to pop out for provisions, dental floss and because I had an insatiable craving for a Strawberry Mivvi, I grabbed my bag-for-life (For life? Really?) and my car keys and headed out. After eventually unearthing a shopping basket void of used tissues, empty Ginsters Cornish Pasty packets or discarded shopping lists, I headed into

the retail abyss.

My time negotiating wayward trollies and ruddy-faced children demanding a bag of Monster Munch was thankfully short; unlike the queue at the checkout. It was here I witnessed ‘Checkout Rage’.

All the elegantly dressed lady was trying to do was return an unwanted item. You’d have thought she’d stripped and attempted to limbo dance under the legs of fellow shoppers. Looks that would have melted my Strawberry Mivvi at a hundred yards, amplified tuts, unwarranted accusations. Within moments the entire line of individuals was at it.

When the lady in the firing-line retaliated, one hindered shopper shouted ‘Ooh, check her out’… I saw the funny side of that, others in queue, however, did not.

Local Exhibition and Prize Draw

In aid of Local Drug Education Left to right - Councillor John Goodwin, Felixstowe Mayor Graham Newman, yours truly and one of Felixstowe’s up and coming artists, Miss Ellie Rose

Some of you who know me, know that I have a big passion for raising awareness and education about drugs and alcohol, so that together we can create a drug-free world.

Last month as part of the Art About Town season, I exhibited at the wonderful Studio Bushfire, Cafe Bencotto and Pierrots as a pre-event to the Suffolk Open Studios and in aid of local drug education.

I think what I was proud about most was the fact that local people and local businesses pulled together at the event... it was a huge success and was only made possible by the united efforts of the people involved...

If it sizzles and begins 1 tsp. baking powder to cook the oil is ready. If not, heat the oil for a little longer. When the oil is hot enough, drop in the mixture one tablespoon at a time so you have enough room in your wok for the fritters not to touch each other or stick together. Local Business Celebrating the revamp of Felixstowe’s family-run Estate Agents, Wainwrights!

1lb of Sausages Please! It would be difficult to say how many times we’ve been asked for a 1lb of sausages! Sorry to say we can’t help you with that, but we can offer you a great service from a family-run business, just as you would have expected over the last 100 years when our shop was a butchers! We’ve always felt it’s important to embrace change, to be current, but still giving that first class service our customers expect. Recently the office began to feel faded and tired, so we decided a freshen up was in order. It took a long time for us to decide on colour and design, wanting to keep the original features of this beautiful building, but still being up-to-date and current. We have kept our look smart and subtle, expressing our competence, sincerity and edge. We hope that we have improved our premises to the benefit of our customers, our fantastic team and also enhance the high street of Felixstowe. Being a part of a small community, it is really important to be involved in local events and we are immensely proud to be sponsoring the Felixstowe Carnival again this year and of our continued work with BASIC Life Charity, like donating our Wainwrights removals van for BASIC to deliver their food parcels, furniture and other charitable gifts to the community. If you get the chance, do come and give us a look, we’d love your opinion on the new office. Hopefully you will love it as much as we do. Richard Cobb – Proprietor.

Local Charity & Their News

11

Basic Life, Community News to Your Door

From the initial idea in 1997, through our acceptance as a registered Charitable Trust in 2000, Felixstowe based BASIC, an independant Charitable Trust, has been able to assist many groups, organisations and individuals with financial, practical and general support. We are a ‘people’ charity and believe our mission is to support those in need and to provide assistance for those who are otherwise prevented from realising their own charitable goals.

New Face

BASIC are really pleased to be able to introduce our new Management Assistant, Stephanie Goulding.

Steph has a great deal of experience in retail locally and we know she will be a great asset to the charity. She will be helping with the administration and overseeing the operation of both of our shops. We know the Felixstowe and Walton public will give her a warm welcome! Donations

‘I don’t know if you can help me, but...’

These are often the first words we hear when somebody is in need of assistance. So how do BASIC deal with these requests?

Well, quite often the request is for something which BASIC does not provide but we know somebody who does! So we do a lot of ‘signposting’ to other

Eastcliff Carpets

organisations in the town who are better equipped to help.

When a request meets our criteria of being a real BASIC need which needs addressing and the applicant has exhausted all other means of meeting it, we will do our best to Stephie Goulding help. We ask the applicant to fill in a simple application form and then, if we feel it meets our ideals, we will try to help as soon as possible. One of the advantages of BASIC is that we are local people and you don’t have to wait weeks for an answer from ‘head office’.

In the last month alone we have provided financial assistance to a family who needed safety locks for their windows, fencing for a family where the children were at risk and donations of household goods have been made to local people who have found themselves in extreme need. This type of assistance is ongoing and, for obvious reasons, we are unable to publish the details.

In addition, we have our regular support through our food banks and the provision of free breakfasts to the children at two local schools. We also have our Blake appeal where we are raising funds for a local child who needs specialist medical assistance. So, if you need help, please contact us. We will always be here to support those in the most need in our community. Have BASIC helped you in the past?

Kids will be Kids

Kids will be Kids is the Felixstowe breakfast, after-school and holiday club which is expanding on almost a daily basis. From their centre on the first floor of Christchurch Church, near Morrison’s, owners Sarah Denny and Beth Cracknell run a fast-paced club for local children.

Their Ofsted approved club is ideally located for parents working in the port or within the town to drop off their children.

Sarah and Beth provide the children with stimulating and, most important of all, fun activities to keep them busy. Recently the children have enjoyed a trip to Easton Farm Park, have been entertained by ‘The Reptile Man’ and have learnt to cook, making gingerbread men. In the current economic climate many parents have found childcare to be expensive, but Kids will be Kids offer realistic and affordable rates.

Review

We’ve talked about local businesses upping their game... so here’s The Felixstowe Magazine’s Mystery Shopper testing out the services, standard, quality and friendliness of random businesses across Felixstowe...

The Mystery Shopper!

Let's face it, unless we eat takeaway every night, we're going to have to face the grocery shopping at least once a month. Most of us have very busy lives and it's understandable why we may head to the supermarket. But maybe it's worth having a look at the Felixstowe area's independent shops. My interest was recently piqued by the short but steady queue that forms out the door of S.J. Summers Butchers in Walton on Saturdays.

I joined that queue one morning and was greeted as I came through the door by a friendly assistant who advised that the meat is locally sourced, and if I didn't see what I was looking for, including game, just ask and they could get it in for me. I was tempted by the £5 breakfast offer (nothing says 'I love you' to my carnivore husband like the occasional fry-up). This easily fed three greedy adults with the addition of a bag of hashbrowns and included meaty sausages; good, thick bacon rashers; a half dozen large, fresh eggs and a tin of generic tomatoes or beans. I would have been quite satisfied with the deal without the addition of the beans. I can't promise to give up the convenience of the supermarket, but I will definitely be returning to S.J. Summers for good value for my money, excellent customer service and really feeling part of the neighbourhood!

Beach Clean with the Felixstowe Society

The Society cleans a designated stretch of Felixstowe beach four times a year and, on each occasion, we are fortunate to be joined by a healthy number of Society volunteers. We are also joined by volunteers from the Beach Hut and Chalet Owners. On this occasion, two staff and five students joined us from Felixstowe Academy and cleaned a stretch of beach from the Pier to the beach opposite the Alex. Three members of the Felixstowe Youth Society were very welcome and now that their exams have finished, they spent an enjoyable hour picking up litter! Altogether we had thirty people taking part including one lady who came along as a visitor and will hopefully become

a member of Felixstowe Society, together with her partner.

Five bags of rubbish were collected weighing 18kgs including 4kgs collected by the Academy students and staff. One unusual item found was a door key on a ring and this was taken to Felixstowe Police Station by one of our members after the clean-up. Other items picked up were glass, batteries, bottle tops, fishing wire, tea bags, a pair of socks and a coat hanger.

As always, these events are superbly organised by Keith and Elizabeth Horn. We will be taking part in the Marine Conservation Society’s National Beach Watch weekend event when beaches all around the country are cleaned by volunteers. In 2013 MSC reported that more litter than ever was found on British beaches - 2,309 items of litter were found on every kilometre cleaned. The strangest finds around the British coastline last year were half a TV, a French bullet-proof vest, a pack of bacon, some plastic bird feet, half a canoe and a set of dentures.

Suffolk Family Carers at the Queen’s Garden Party On Tuesday 10th June, two family carers, Neil & Linda Bowles from Felixstowe, represented all of Suffolk’s Family Carers at the Queen’s garden party. Local charity Suffolk Family Carers was approached by The Lord Lieutenant of Suffolk, Lord Tollemache last year and asked to recommend a family carer to attend. Neil and Linda were the well-deserving attendees. Neil cares for Linda, who has Primary Progressive Multiple Sclerosis, and was honoured to be asked to represent Suffolk’s Family Carers and the invitation to the garden party served as a thank you to them for all the fundraising help and support they have given to the charity over the last few years. Neil says, “Our lives changed almost overnight when Linda was diagnosed. From being fit and doing full time work, Linda became weaker and more poorly over the next 3 or 4 years, and I was having to do more and more for her. Eventually she was able to do almost nothing for herself, and I had to give up work and care for her full time. That’s when Suffolk Family Carers got involved. They came to my house and gave me information and advice on what support was available to me and, as a result, I now attend the Felixstowe Family Carer group where I get to know other Family Carers.” Neil and Linda thoroughly enjoyed the Queen’s garden party; in fact, Linda had a long conversation with The Duchess of Gloucester and felt like they were friends.

Neil says, “It was a magical day. Linda looked fabulous in her new outfit and hat, and the weather was perfect. As we entered the Palace garden I was overwhelmed with where we were, we were so proud and happy. We were there to fly the flag for all of the Family Carers in Suffolk. We had lovely delicate sandwiches, and yes, they do cut off the crusts, and yes, they do include cucumber sandwiches with fresh mint, delicious! Lovely cakes and pastries were washed down with tea, all to the sound of 2 military bands playing cheerful tunes. The National Anthem at 4pm signified the arrival of the Queen, and so the party began. All wheelchair users were invited to gather an hour later for a special reception. It was here that we actually spoke to the Queen, Prince Philip, Prince Andrew, Princess Eugenie, and Linda was almost best of friends with the Duchess of Gloucester.

Neil and Linda were also fundamental in helping Suffolk Family Carers become BBC Radio Suffolk’s appeal charity of the year and recorded a piece for the presentation that secured the charitys’ partnership with the radio for the ‘8 Days a Week’ appeal.

The appeal aims to raise a £250,000 to buy and run a Mobile Family Carers Centre to reach out to the thousands of hidden Family Carers aged 9 upwards, in the county. The vehicle will provide a place where Family Carers can be supported through advice, guidance, information and a listening ear. Linking up with other organisations so that we can provide simple health checks, such as blood pressure or cholesterol, will enable Family Carers to look after their own health and allow them to carry on doing what they do best – care. Find out more about Suffolk Family Carers by visiting: www. suffolkfamilycarers.org or follow twitter @sfc_d4c or facebook www.facebook.com/suffolkfamilycarers To donate to Suffolk Family Carers ‘8 Days a Week’ appeal, you can text SFC08 and £1,2,3,4,5 or £10 to 70070.

Ride Felixstowe’s Open Topper this Summer!

The start of the school holidays will see the welcome return of Felixstowe’s open top bus tour, which gives the opportunity for visitors and residents to view the town and its sea front from a different angle, and also provides a link to the Landguard viewing point, Felixstowe Museum and the adjacent nature reserve. With the advantage of the all day ‘hop on/hop off’ ticket you can alight at Landguard and walk along the coastal path through the nature reserve, either returning to Landguard or, for those who are more energetic, to carry on walking to join the Promenade, continue to the Leisure Centre and rejoin the bus there. You can also alight near Cobbold’s Point and take a leisurely stroll along the Promenade to pick up the bus by the Leisure Centre, perhaps stopping off for an ice cream along the way at one of the beach kiosks.

The bus operates on Sundays and Wednesdays from 27 July to 31 August (excluding the August bank holiday) and leaflets showing detailed times and fares are available from the Tourist Information Centre and the Library. Timetables are also accessible online by searching Felixstowe open top bus. Although the bus is marketed primarily as a tourist attraction, it is possible to use it for purely local journeys if you find it convenient. Felixstowe Travel Watch is pleased make a contribution towards the operating cost of the bus. By Bryan Frost, Felixstowe Travel Watch.`
