Note from the Editor

Welcome to September’s edition of The Felixstowe Magazine These past months have seen some fab local events including the Trimley Carnival, Pirates on the Prom and the Felixstowe Carnival with fireworks and airshow on the beach. Many volunteers helped to organise each event and worked together to put on some great shows. These volunteers also helped to raise money for local charities so many congratulations to them all! Their wonderful creativity, not to mention blood, sweat and tears helped to make each event a massive success. Art on the Prom is the next event for the arts which takes place on September 7th. Yet again our town has a lot to celebrate this month and I’m excited to share these events and individual stories. As the months roll on, I’m finding more and more incredibly inspiring people come out of the woodwork to share their tales - all of which I think you’ll enjoy reading about and will find just as remarkable as I do (see page 13)! With summer almost officially over, children going back to school and freshers soon to be starting university, I’d like to wish our youth a huge “GOOD LUCK!” For the rest of you Felixstonians... a very happy September to you all. “Trimley Carnival celebrated it's 45th anniversary by hosting a full weekend of events on July 12th and 13th. The theme for the procession was 'Countries of the World Cup,' with floats including football in Brazil and an Italian theme complete with real Vespa scooters! On the field at the Trimley Sports and Social Club there was an array of stalls and fairground fun. Felixstowe Heritage Open Days September 12th, 13th and 14th The Felixstowe Society is, once again, sponsoring this year’s Heritage Open Days in Felixstowe and surrounding areas. For the national organisation, English Heritage, 2014 is the twentieth anniversary of the festival which enables millions of people to visit places not normally open to the public - and all the events are FREE. In Felixstowe we have the largest programme we have ever produced - over fifty events. You can enjoy tours of four historic properties as well as local churches, Felixstowe Academy, Cotman House, The Town Hall, the Tourist Information building, The Smock Mill and many others. You could participate in a selection of nine walks which focus on the architectural and historical heritage of the town, ranging from The Martello Walk which takes in some of the town’s distinctive features, to The Walton Walk which guides visitors around the history of this relatively little known parish. There will be six talks taking place during the three days include topics such as Bawdsey Radar, Memories of the Alex and Felixstowe’s Golfing Heritage. There are so many more events - so look out for the comprehensive programme which will be available at the Tourist Information Centre and the Library sometime after August 20th. Blue Cross Celebrates a Great Success Once again, Blue Cross Felixstowe is celebrating another successful Blue Cross Fun Dog Show. The show was held at Trimley Sports and Social Club on Sunday 3rd August. The weather was kind to dogs and owners, being warm but with a nice breeze. As a result, we had our best Fun Dog Show with nearly 800 people joining in the fun and 145 dogs taking up the various challenges in the six arenas. These included waggiest tail, most handsome dog, prettiest bitch and best rescue dog. For the more energetic dogs and owners, there was the Blue Cross Dog “Scurry, Gun Scurry” agility course and much more. Those looking for a bargain were not disappointed. From the cake stall - always a favourite, to good quality pet products donated by owners, book stall, bouncy castle and all the other stalls. We were very pleased to have the presence of Suffolk Police who were promoting a new initiative, Paws on Patrol. The scheme encourages dog walkers to register with the police and then report any suspicious behaviour they may come

across whilst out and about, either by calling 101 for nonemergencies or 999 if they believe a crime is in progress. We were also pleased to have Ryder-Davies Vets on hand offering free microchipping for dogs, in conjunction with Blue Cross. As a result of all the activities and generosity of the Blue Cross supporters, we managed to raise just over £2,000. The money will go directly to the Blue Cross Re-homing Centre. Finally, I would like to thank all the staff, volunteers and supporters who combined to make the Blue Cross Fun Dog Day a success and we look forward to seeing everyone at the Blue Cross Christmas Fayre being held at St Mary’s Church Hall on Saturday November 22nd 2014. Felixstowe’s Cultural Food Corner Celebrating the many culinary cultures Felixstowe is proud to have...

A Delicious Polish Feast

Bigos - Hunter’s Stew Ingredients 2 jars sauerkraut 2 tablespoons vegetable oil 2 large onions, chopped 5 pieces very lean belly of pork or pork shoulder, chopped 2 smoked Polish sausages, chopped 50g dried porcini mushrooms 1.5 litres chicken stock made up with water 100g white mushrooms, chopped Method Drain the sauerkraut through a sieve. If the sauerkraut is very sour (and you would prefer it to be less sour), you can rinse it with cold water and then drain. Set to one side. Heat the vegetable oil in a large pan and add the onions. Cook on a very low heat until the onions are very soft and lightly golden. Add the chopped pork to the pan and brown all over, until any fat has melted. Add the chopped sausage to the pan. In a separate bowl, pour one cup of hot water on

to the porcini mushrooms and leave them to soak. Once the sauerkraut has properly drained, add it to the pan with the onions and meat. Add the chicken stock and stir together well. Drain the porcini mushrooms (be sure to reserve the stock), roughly chop and add to the sauerkraut. Pour in the cup of porcini mushroom stock, too, being careful not to add any of the grit at the bottom. Cover with a lid and slow cook for one and a half hours. Towards the end of the cooking time, chop the white mushrooms and fry them in a separate pan with a little vegetable oil. Add these to the sauerkraut. The bigos is best eaten the day after cooking once it’s being thoroughly re-heated. Serve with Polish rye bread. Smacznegol (enjoy your meal) everyone! Local Business

9 Paul Branch tells us about how it all started 25 years ago...

Local Business

Fruit and Flowers Myself and my wife Elvita started Fruit and Flowers 5 years ago and we would like to thank all of you have supported us in this time and continue to support us.

Some of the lovely team: Jody, Paul and Elvita

It all started when I was just 17 years old, when I worked in a fruit and veg shop. By the time I was 18, I owned my own shop in Braintree. This very quickly developed into two more shops and a wholesalers. I think it’s with all this experience from a young age til now that I understand what people need of a local fruit and veg shop. We stock a lovely variety of products, all of which are fresh and locally sourced from around Suffolk. We’ve recently started to stock Trimley Potted Herbs. If I don’t have what a customer wants, I make sure every effort is made to try to get that item, even if it’s a one-off. With the well-established and respected contacts we’ve made over the years in this trade, we’ve gotten to know where to get things no matter how unusual. I think this is what my regulars like most about Fruit and Flowers, as well as the fact that we’re a happy, friendly bunch (usually!) and that all my staff are local to Felixstowe. What is the best thing about being in the business? Being my own boss (laughs)! I love being on the high street and I really do appreciate how accepted we’ve been from the beginning. I also love the different characters that come in the shop.

At the moment we have an offer on 25kg of white potatoes for just £4.99. This offer ends on October 7th, so be sure to get your bag! Is there anything else you’d like to say? Just that I’m really pleased to be able to serve our fantastic town and Iook forward to serving the community for many more years to come!

Local Advice News and tips from local accountant, Dawn...

We’ve talked about local businesses upping their game... so here’s The Felixstowe Magazine’s Mystery Shopper testing out the services, standard, quality and friendliness of businesses across Felixstowe...

Changes The Mystery Shopper! Financial At the Cliff Top Cafe Bill 2014

During the warmer months, we're surrounded by holiday makers enjoying what Felixstowe has to offer. But maybe, by familiarity, we don't always notice what our visitors are enjoying? We recently revisited the Cliff Top Cafe for the first time since Chilli and Chives took over. Parking is always difficult on the Harvest House end of Cobbold Road, but it's a pleasant walk from the town centre or along the promenade.

Following the introduction of the Finance Bill 2014, here’s a few snippets you may find interesting:Review of Form P11D reporting: Following recommendations in the Office of Tax Simplifications (OTS) January 2014 report, there are a number of changes to how certain expenses and benefits are both taxed and reported. HMRC will be consulting on simplifying the P11D process by bringing all employees into P11D reporting and abolishing the need to use separate Form P9Ds for those earning less than £8,500 per year. The consultation will also consider formalising an exemption for trivial or minor benefits, introducing the ability to tax employee benefits through the payroll rather than through P11Ds and introducing a general exemption for non-taxable expenses (rather than needing a P11D reporting dispensation). Personal allowances for non-residents: The government will consult on restricting the personal allowance to UK residents and those living overseas who have strong economic connections to the UK. This will increase the UK tax liability of certain non-UK residents. Class 2 National Insurance: From April 2016, Class 2 NIC for self-employed individuals will be collected through self assessment tax returns rather than using the current process of direct debit payment. The announcements did not comment on the position for individuals paying voluntary Class 2 NIC, which will include a number of outbound expatriates. We await further detail on this point. Increases to ISA allowances: The attractiveness of ISA saving was also increased. The distinction between ‘cash’ and ‘stocks & shares’ ISAs has been dropped and the annual tax free ISA savings limit has been increased to £15,000. Please contact: Dawn Johnson FMAAT (see advert below)

My husband, the carnivore, started following the lovely smoky scent of bacon from the path and had made up his mind what he fancied before he reached the menu board. Although the cakes under the glass domes looked yummy, I was called by the warm-scented siren of freshly baked cheese scones cooling on the side. The coffee was good and a pot for two turned out to be an eight-cup cafetiere that offered us several cups each. My scone was generous and warm, and my husband assures me that his bacon baguette was lovely. While we waited for our order, we enjoyed the art exhibition on the walls, I luxuriating in the greens and blues of the Suffolk landscape, the 'carnivore' playing 'guess the price of #11'! I can see this becoming a not-so-secret haunt even through the colder months, particularly as they offer tartan lap rugs and Country Living magazines to snuggle up with! Chilli and Chives @ The Cliff Top Cafe is open 9 to 5 every day except Tuesday.

Flippin’ Floppin’ Awful! by Dean Wales Despite being a man (although I have on the odd occasion had that disputed!) I can’t quite understand why some of us hunter gatherers manage to get everything to do with our feet so very wrong. Up until the introduction of the trendy, designer-branded flip-flop, men have traditionally felt painfully self-conscious about baring their plates of meat. We've all witnessed it, haven't we? The geezer on the beach on a balmy summer's afternoon, who drops his jeans to reveal gaudy shorts, who then goes on to whip off his slogan-emblazoned t-shirt, only to kick off his trainers and lay there with his socks on. Why? So, you'd think it would be a welcome sight to see more guys wearing flip-flops, liberating the flesh below their ankles and letting the air flow around their little pinkies. Oh good grief, no! In fear of becoming labelled as a gawping freak with a foot fetish, I've become obsessed with how badly men do the 'foot thing’; they (excluding myself and a smidgen of other image-conscious gentlemen) just don't get it. It was the sights I had to endure one lunch time in town that

compelled me to return to my desk and type up this up. I can quite frankly say that I can stomach no more. Sock elastic marks around the ankles - no! Black sock fluff in between the toes - euuughh! Long toenails - oh please!... Fungus infections - enough already! And (please note I can scarcely write this without retching) grubby, I mean really yucky, feet. They may be cooped up all day in sweaty socks and hot shoes, but gentlemen, if you're going to bare your feet in public, please consider the more sensitive among us, otherwise I'm just going to have to insist on the socks and sandals look again. Local Style Local wedding planner talks about her awesome photography concept...

The Fearless Bride Three Styles of Post Wedding or Prom Photography - by Gill Atacocugu

The concept of ‘The Fearless Bride’ photography was inspired by Las Vegas photographer, John Michael Cooper in 2008. He wanted to put more ‘cinema into wedding photography’ by placing a bride in an unexpected and unusual location and often ruining the dress for the sake of art. Some would say that, with the vows exchanged, the dress will never be needed again, hence opting for an extreme form of after-wedding photography. It is seen as a form of artistic expression and one that allows the bride to have an unusual set of pictures for posterity. Working with Suffolk-based photographers, here are the three styles available. Girls in their prom dresses may also be interested. The first and most elegant type of photography is ‘Cherish the Dress.’ Situated in an elegant, vintage or sophisticated environment, the dress does not get ruined at all. The second type is ‘Rock the Frock.’ Photographs are more

edgy and often the backdrop is natural, urban or industrial. The idea is that the elegance of the bride in her bridal dress is contrasted with the roughness of the location or unusual accessories are used. Finally, the most extreme form is ‘Trash the Dress.’ No limits apply here. The gown can be strewn with paint, water, mud, or sand. The female can be photographed submerged in water or mud, lying on rocks, in fact anything goes for the sake of art. If you’d like to enquire how you can rock YOUR frock, contact me directly by email at gillatacocugu@yahoo.co.uk.

Local Person

13 Here’s a little insight into a very inspirational local lady...

Cancer Care with

Brenda Shelley

Before retirement, Brenda Shelley taught in a local high school and was also an associate lecturer with the Open University. After such a busy working life, Brenda wanted to find some meaningful voluntary work to occupy her retirement years. We went to meet Brenda to get an insight into her life and the passion for her work...

Her love for the NHS and her experience as a carer led her to work in Ipswich Hospital in the Cancer Information Centre. She now works there one day a week, meeting patients and their carers and providing them with both a listening ear and resources. Brenda is part of a team of dedicated volunteers at the centre, who provide an invaluable back-up to the centre manager, Louise Smith. In addition to her work in the centre, Brenda is an accredited tutor on two Macmillan HOPE courses: one for patients and one for carers. Both courses are for 2.5 hours a week and last 6 weeks. The HOPE (Help Overcoming Problems Effectively) Patients’ Course, which is for people who have completed their treatment, helps patients to develop skills so that they can move on and accept a new ‘normality’. There are sessions on fatigue, sleeplessness, diet, exercise, body image, communication, mindfulness, relaxation and visualisation exercises. The courses are very popular and participants find them very worthwhile, both for their content but also for the opportunity to meet other patients and to share experiences. The Carers’ Course also provides an opportunity for carers to come together and talk about their experience and allows them to develop skills to deal with the stresses and strains involved in such caring. Both courses have proved to be very valuable for both patients and carers.

months and are open to both patients and carers. In the workshop, participants can try many different types of art and craft activities, which so far have included ceramics, painting, drawing, jewellery making, printing, decoupage, batik and collage. A Book Group for patients has also been set up in the last few months and that, like the art workshop, has proved to be very popular. Brenda says that her work in the centre and on the courses, art workshops and Book Group is very fulfilling and that she feels privileged to be able to help in this way. Her fellow course facilitators and volunteers in the centre are another reason why she enjoys her work so much. She says: “It is a real pleasure to work with such warm and lovely people who do their utmost to help and support patients and carers going through a very dark period in their lives.” Brenda invited us along to the centre where we met the incredible staff and one fascinating lady, whose life has been changed because of the volunteers and staff who put their heart and soul into their job. Eileen endured two bouts of cancer and on each occasion the centre has been a huge support for her personally and physically. It took a while for her to cross The wonderful Eileen over that threshold to get help, however, when she finally made the decision, she was overwhelmed by the friendliness and indiscriminate kindness she received. To her, the centre is now part of her family; the volunteers, the staff and fellow patients all have each other to learn from, to confide in and to sometimes simply just have a cuppa with. As well as the incredible HOPE course, which turned her life around, there are also complementary therapies like reiki, counselling and some forms of massage. All the activities including the art workshops are co-ordinated by the centre managers Louise and Michaela, administrated by Julie and supported by their wonderful team of volunteers. There’s also the ever popular Book Group run by Brenda. Many cancer patients find their memory and focus suffer due to the illness and also the chemotherapy, so the Book Group is a great help to improve these abilities. Eileen says it’s helped her hugely. For those of you who are worried about your own treatment, who don’t know who to talk to, who don’t know what to talk about in regard to your treatment, or perhaps you are a friend or family member of a cancer patient, Eileen has this to say to you: “I really do encourage you to pop in to the centre and meet Brenda and the staff there. They are truly magnificent people and I certainly would never be where I am today if it wasn’t for them...The people here have accepted me into their hearts. It’s a sanctuary here and once you step over the threshold, you’ll find friends for life.”

Local Business Showing us how to spend our pennies in a wiser way, here’s Andrew Chenery from Financial Peace UK to give us tips on reducing household bills.

Why Pay Over the Odds for Your Utilities... ...and waste your hard-earned money, when you could very easily switch and save money with the help of this local company? Appointments are FREE (except for maybe a cup of tea) and last about an hour. If you are someone like I used to be, who finds it difficult to navigate your way through the complex process of changing utility supplier or worried about making a decision on which company to go with to save money, then worry no more.

allow budget control, so children cannot run up expensive bills and also calls from landlines are free to mobiles.

Felixstowe-based Financial Peace UK was founded in April 2013 and was set up purely to help households and businesses do exactly that and save money.

We come and visit you and complete a personal or business assessment, then we provide you with a price comparison. Then it’s entirely up to you if you wish to proceed with those savings. If you do, we will then take care of all the changes for you, keeping you notified as each change-over is due to take place.

By bundling utilities together (that’s gas, electric, landline, broadband and mobiles) onto one fully itemised bill, meaning one direct debit each month, you are guaranteed to save money, typically 25% each month. This makes for easier budgeting and simplicity for yourselves. The energy prices are guaranteed to be cheaper than The Big Six, the mobile tariffs

Local Charity & Their News

Basic Life, Community News to Your Door

From the initial idea in 1997, through our acceptance as a registered Charitable Trust in 2000, Felixstowe based BASIC, an independant Charitable Trust, has been able to assist many groups, organisations and individuals with financial, practical and general support. We are a ‘people’ charity and believe our mission is to support those in need and to provide assistance for those who are otherwise prevented from realising their own charitable goals. As we reach September, one topic is bound to be high on the list of priorities for many local households. Yes, it’s ‘Back to School’ and sorry kids, there is no escape! Over the summer holidays we were fortunate enough to have many families answer our appeal for used uniforms. We sold them on via our shops and we know many parents were delighted to equip their children for the new term. We also have collected many of the usual school items such as notepads, folders and a pens for another year. We know, it seems like five minutes ago when we were packing it away!

If the recipient wasn’t happy with the gift, at least the charity benefited. It seemed like a good idea to us and we now have gift vouchers available at both of our shops. We know it seems a little strange at first to give a charity shop gift voucher – but for Christmas it might be fun to receive one and then rummage through the stock to find exactly what you’ve always wanted! The end of August was the deadline for our Calendar Competition, where we Local MP Therese Coffey asked local photography enthusiasts to with Staff from BASIC. send us their very best seasonal shots from around the town.

We noticed last year that many customers had adopted the system where family members had agreed to buy an item for, say £5, from a local charity shop instead of one of the expensive retailers.

Ipswich High School

The winning entrants have been advised and the calendars are on order. They will be available soon in both of our shops, so why not spend next year with some beautiful local views to look at, captured by very talented people from our town!

The Felixstowe Sailing Club Refurb Party after Floods The small blue and white yacht appeared in the mist, rather forlorn but with so much potential. Romantic as it sounds, this was the way we found Tara, a 20’ trailer sailer yacht sitting at Felixstowe Ferry. It was the start of months of cleaning, painting and repairing but she went into the water in late summer and we had some great days sailing up the Deben to Woodbridge. Stuart had been in boats as a child but I was a complete novice, although eager to learn the ropes! The next step to owning a boat was to join a club and so in June we became members of Felixstowe Ferry Sailing Club - and what a decision we made! The season went really well, laying up supper had gone by and a few fish and chip suppers too, but then disaster for the low-lying parts of the county; the club included. The December 2013 tidal surge left the club under water. The carpeted floor of the bar was ruined and the wooden floor in the dining room had risen in the centre by about 30cm, shingle had washed under the supporting columns and the whole thing needed to be removed and re-laid. Volunteers worked for days to mop up, clear and clean the club, from pulling up metres of soggy carpet to clearing collapsed cardboard boxes in the cellar. Local builder Mike Ferris and his team set to and replaced the floor in a few days, literally working day and night to allow the club to open as soon as possible. By this time we had joined the committee and suggested that if we were to have new floors and carpet then maybe we should refurbish the fixtures and fittings - it badly needed a new coat of paint too!

Local Law

A Day in the Life of a Paralegal With my final Legal Practice Course (LPC) exams behind me, I’m now a full-time member of the Jackamans team. In a few weeks time I’ll have my results and be able to start my training contract. For those of you who don’t know, the LPC is the final academic stage of becoming a solicitor. All soon-to-be solicitors are taught a number of core topics including conveyancing, litigation and business law, along with key skills such as interviewing and legal drafting, before selecting electives to study in the second term. It’s these elective exams that I have just finished, my choices being commercial law and intellectual property, employment law and private client. Unfortunately this combination meant that all three exams were in the same week, so it certainly has been a stressful time! The training contract will be like an apprenticeship; I’ll spend two years learning how to put theory into practice before becoming a fully-fledged solicitor. Whilst some firms have a very rigid structure in which trainees do three or six-month ‘seats’ in different departments, at Jackamans

we take a more flexible, concurrent approach which means I get the benefit of in-depth training without sacrificing continuity for clients. It’s been a long two years of studying, work experience and exams but I’m certainly very glad that I took the leap and decided to change my career; in my previous lives I worked in the marketing department of a London software company and also as a restaurant manager! I’ll be sure to keep you posted on how I get on in my new role. If you have a legal matter that is concerning you do pop into the office at 167/171 Hamilton Road, Felixstowe, IP11 7DR, or call 01394 279636. Blue Light Could it be the Cause of Your Restless Sleep? In a world where technology is increasingly becoming a part of everyday life, it appears that switching off is not as simple as hitting the ‘off’ button. Whether we are at work, relaxing at home or gaming with friends – we are spending increasing amounts of time in front of our televisions, computers, tablets and phones. And it is believed that this could be one of the causes for 83% of us complaining of restless nights and eye strain. Henry Sessions at the East of England Co-op Opticians explained: “These devices all emit blue light. Blue light in itself is a natural phenomenon – present in daylight - and helps us to stay awake. However, this increased exposure throughout the day, and now more often into the night, can cause eye strain, eye fatigue and sleeplessness as it decreases the production of the sleep inducing hormone melatonin.” Working with leading lens manufacturers Hoya, the East of England Co-op Opticians is now offering a new lens coating which reduces the amount of blue light entering the eye. This can be used in combination with all other lens coatings; including scratch-resistant and anti-reflective. Henry continued: “Since the effects of blue light are becoming more widely understood, we have already seen a

high increase in those opting to have this new lens coating. “For those who spend a large amount of their day in front of a screen, this simple solution should lead to people having a better night’s sleep, allowing them to be more productive during the day time.” To find your local East of England Co-op Optician, book a sight test or for further information about blue light simply visit eastofengland.coop/optical.
