Welcome to February’s edition of The Felixstowe Magazine With the first month of 2015 done and dusted, love is now well and truly in the air. I am a sucker for love, so forgive me for allowing this issue to be heavily influenced by Valentine’s Day.

But do not fear, there’s something for everyone - for you romantic cynics there is some dry humour from our Local Lad, and for all you love birds there’s a lovely story written by local writer, Brian Blackmore on page 15, and some good tips for Valentine’s gifts from the local wedding planner, Gill on page 6 and 7. Felixstowe had a historical day in January: Weighing in at a huge 84,000 tonnes (about the same as 14,500 London buses), running the length of 400m (four football pitches) and bearing the capacity to carry over 19,000 containers (about 19 million cans of beans), CSCL Globe, the largest cargo ship in the world, arrived in the Port of Felixstowe on 7th January 2015 (facts credited to the Port of Felixstowe). Amazing hey? Enjoy your February everyone! Mandeep Birdy Editor Cover by our Facebook friend, Darren Harvey

Local Business Trusted, friendly and simply fantastic, here’s Simon Cudworth, to tell us about one of the best independent post offices in Felixstowe...

Simon and Staff at...

Bent Hill Post Office

Bent Hill Post Office is an independently run business which was acquired by the current sub-postmaster Simon Cudworth in May 2013. Simon moved to Felixstowe four years ago having successfully owned and operated post offices in Ipswich for the past twenty-five years. He has a great team working with him with over thirty years combined experience in all aspects of post office work. ‘As an independent business, customer service is key to our success,’ says Simon. ‘We pride ourselves in giving the best service possible and we hope our customers appreciate that!’

Despite all the changes in the post office network over recent years, Simon is confident Bent Hill Post Office has a great future and has recently invested a considerable amount of money in improving and modernising the office. The feedback from customers is very positive with the new open plan counters being a big hit. Also, the opening hours have been extended so closing time is now at 5.30pm on Saturdays. This has proved to be

very successful with customers as we can now offer a full range of services during this period.

“There is a misconception among public that independent post offices offer a limited range in services, but this is untrue. On the contrary, we can transact over 95% of services through our office.” (Please see the Bent Hill Post Office advert below for a full list of their services).

Another positive change for our customers is our Bureau services; “We hold over twenty-five currencies in stock at all times with larger amounts of euros and US dollars always available. Where possible we will try and match rates of our competitors so if you have a holiday planned please call in and ask for a quote.”

Simon and his team would like to wish all their customers a happy and healthy New Year!

Local Person

Local Singer and Songwriter

Gussie Stafford

The lovely Gussie tells us that being in Felixstowe is the perfect place for inspiration and she owes a massive thank you to many local people and businesses for her singing adventures. Not long ago, Gussie was asked to sing for Frresh Gold Radio at an event. Since then Gussie has been all over the place with them - truck rallies, RSPCA events, the carnival. We got together with Gussie to ask her about her success, goals and Princess Anne! Tell us who you are and how old you are… Hi, I’m Gussie Stafford and I’m 18 years old.

How long have you lived in Felixstowe? I have lived here, gosh…. Since I was about 5 years old.

What’s your favourite thing about Felixstowe? I really like the scenery and I love the beach. It’s small but it’s not so small that you can’t be your own person. There are a lot of people out there who are willing to give singers like myself the opportunity to sing at an open mic event or a charity event.

That brings me to your next question… What do you? I’m currently between education, working and singing. Singing is my passion and I’ll be starting college in September to do a music course at Suffolk One. At the moment I’m looking for part-time work to subsidise the gigs I sing at.

How long have you been singing for? Since I could! I’ve always sung. When I got into high school I entered a talent competition which a good friend encouraged me to do. I never stopped singing and I think my friend got annoyed with me, so they helped me enter the competition (laughs). Since the competition a lot of people have asked me to sing for them at their events. After that I didn’t push too much, but when I hit 14, I really wanted to push the singing and performing at more events. What are your goals with your singing? I would really like it to be a career for me. I’d love to go on tour and be able to perform for a living. How would you describe yourself and your music? My music kind of comes from the heart. It’s truthful - it’s about stories that have happened around me. I’m a bit

soulful I guess and there’s some pop. I’ve never been able to put myself in a genre. There are many of my songs I have been waiting to get recorded. That’s one of the things I want to achieve in 2015, making a good album. Do you write your own music? I do. After going on Felixstowe TV I did an interview and thanks to the support of Mark Buche I now have a CD which has four of my original songs. You’ll have to listen to my music to find out what you think.

Where can people hear or buy your music, or even book you for a gig/event? They can check out my YouTube channel and Facebook page to hear the music. To book for a gig or event, they can email me or message me on Facebook (details below). I’m also a presenter on Flx Radio on Saturday at 3pm, so folks can email me there: studio@felixstoweradio.org.uk

Do you have any claims to fame? I used to be a Sea Cadet and Princess Anne opened up the new docks. I did a rifle drill for her at the opening and she was sitting right in front of me with the rifle directly infront of her face (laughs). She was probably thinking, “I’m so happy there’s no bullets in that rifle!” To get in touch with the lovely Gussie or listen to her music, here are her details and links:

Celebrating Vale

By Gill Atacocugu – Felixstow

It’s February and Valentine’s Day is upon us. Thoughts of how prominent. It was poet Geoffrey Chaucer who first made the Fowls’ in 1381. This was to mark the engagement between En

‘For this was on Seynt Valentyne’s day, Whan euery bryd comyth there to chese his make.’

Prior to this poem there had been at least three known Saint Valentines but none had been associated with romance. By the 1800’s Valentine’s Day cards were being mass produced. In Felixstowe, we are fortunate to have many businesses which are able to assist us when it comes to making romantic gestures and marking special events. Here I have focussed on three.

At the Jewellery Box in Orwell Road, Corrina and her staff offer a detailed consultation service for those planning to buy a garment for a special occasion. Corrina’s range of wedding, bridesmaids, party and prom dresses should be viewed. Alterations and embellishments can be carried out in house on garments purchased from the shop. There is a shoe dying service to match a dress, a variety of accessories are also available. All the stock are genuine and is supplied from within the United Kingdom or from the U.S.A.

The Art of Threading

Stunning wedding and couple photography by Bushfire Photography

What is threading? Threading is an ancient eyebrow shaping and hair removal technique, originating from Asia. Threading has fast become celebrities preferred method for perfect eyebrows.

Why threading? Threading defines and shapes the eyebrows. The treatment is kinder to the skin than waxing as no heat or chemicals are applied. Shaped eyebrows enhance facial features which is a real confidence booster. Regrowth is softer, smoother and finer.

Felixstowe’s Cultural Food Corner Cut-Outs Save all your favourite recipes in a binder, with our recipe cut-outs!

Spice up Your Winter with Cinnamon Yam Mash Note: If yam is not available sweet potatoes may be substituted. Preparation:

Place the peeled and diced yams in a large stockpot. Add the hot water and salt, then place the stockpot on the stove over medium heat. Bring to a boil and cook for 35 minutes or until an inserted fork in the yam pierces easily. Yam is a versatile vegetable. It can be roasted fried, boiled and baked. You have to be very careful when peeling a yam. If a peeled yam touches your skin it itches… a lot. You can use yams boiled like potatoes as a starch with meals, and they’re always an ingredient in traditional Jamaican soups. Ingredients:

5 pounds of yams, peeled, 2” diced 2 quarts water, hot 1 tbsp. salt 8 oz. butter, cold, ½” diced 1 ½ tsp cinnamon, ground ¼ tsp pepper, white, ground ½ cup brown sugar

Drain the water from the yam and transfer them into a mixing bowl. Using a wire whisk, mash until yams are broken up. Add diced cold butter, ground cinnamon, white pepper and brown sugar then mix again until the yams are smooth and all of the ingredients are mixed evenly. If needed, season with additional salt to taste.

Place the cinnamon yam mash on a large serving platter and garnish with fried malanga chips and chopped parsley. This recipe serves eight people and makes a great side to pork, lamb or turkey. Enjoy! Want to try this beautiful dish? Pop over to the brand new Felixstowe International Food Store on Orwell Road where they stock those gorgeous yummy yams, as well as all the spices and seasoning you need! Ruby’s Kitchen Felixstowe’s Premier Café First of all, we would like to thank all of our customers for giving us such a warm welcome when we reopened Ruby’s Kitchen back in August. It was a brilliant summer, enjoyed in the glorious sun at our small café. Many coffees, teas, slices of cake and cooked dinners later, we still enjoying our venture. We are fortunate to have a vast number of regular customers, without whom our days would be bleak. Having said so, we always look forward to welcoming new customer into our establishment and enjoy seeing them return. Since August we have been working hard to establish Ruby’s Kitchen as a place worth visiting, and we are always looking to improve it. In a day controlled by social media and internet platform to voice opinion we got involved; resulting in a Facebook page which gains likes and views with each day. We also put ourselves out there to the critics on Trip Advisor and are happy to mention we are currently ranked third out of sixty-nine places in Felixstowe.

We have even more improvements in our pipeline. We will soon have a wi-fi connection available to all our customers. Perhaps our biggest venture yet, is our work on getting licensed, this is now in its final stages and soon customer will be able to enjoy a tipple with their lunch or afternoon cake. These improvements are made following suggestions received by many. We are always happy to listen to any

Mystery Shopper Reviewing the latest and greatest of Felixstowe, here’s our Mystery Shopper to bring you her take on the best of our town...

The Fludyer Arms

My husband and I had a midweek day off together and he surprised me with by taking me out to lunch at The Fludyers. We had a complimentary jug of water for the table and ordered a cafetiere of coffee. My husband had creamed haddock, with poached egg and spinach and I had the Toulouse sausage Cassoulet; we ordered a portion of fat chips to share between us. My husband tucked into his meal and we both agreed that although the chips were good, we had been greedy in ordering them and half the bowl was left over. I really enjoyed my Cassoulet, which was more ‘in the style of’ rather than a completely classic version.

To be honest, this was a good thing because it was far fresher than I remember, fragrant with thyme and garlic and topped with buttery crumbs. Growing up in California in the early seventies, my father thought that the epitome of sophistication was a big pot of Cassoulet, a jug of Sangria and room full of guitarists to feed. My father’s version had duck, pork, lamb and the sausage and was far too rich for a seven-year-old’s palette. Either my palate has developed

Trinity Tyres

in my great age, or a pared down version of the French classic is more suited to a modern taste.

The décor was equally pared down, bared brick, grey wood panelling and modern fixtures. The service was prompt and attentive and the music modern acoustic – perfect for the venue (if just a tiny bit too loud). The Fludyers appears to be appealing to a client base who can enjoy a mid-week lunch; I was slightly envious of the couples at leisure, enjoying the most beautiful looking fish and chips, or sharing a starter of mussels before tucking into their steaks and Rioja. I’m still socially observant, let’s not call it nosey!

Welcome to Coastside Fitness, the newest Fitness Club in town! Many people in Felixstowe will know there has been a gym at the crossroads of Hamilton Road and Cobbold Road (above Boots) for some time but what most people may not know is that it has recently come under new ownership. It not only has a new name - Coastside Fitness - new local ownership and new friendly staff - but has also had significant investment to provide a fresh environment in the middle of Felixstowe town centre where people can come in and enjoy exercising with a full range of quality equipment.

Greig ensures that each of the staff at the club provide a friendly and knowledgeable approach to all who visit, with Dan, the other full-timer currently serving his apprenticeship and becoming a qualified gym instructor, and Jake, Emma, Gemma and Laura making up the team as part-time staff and class instructors.

You Won’t Believe Your Ears!

Hearing aids that allow you to hear better than someone with normal hearing – and now available in Felixstowe!

Do you struggle to follow conversation? Do people say you have the TV too loud? Are you always having to say ‘pardon’? Do peoples voices sound muffled? These are all common signs of hearing loss, which affects around one out of six people in the UK – however help is at hand.

One local company is now offering people the opportunity to trial a new hearing aid, which has been labelled as the world’s first that allows hearing impaired people to hear better than people with normal hearing in certain listening situations*.

With technology as it is today, there should no-longer be a stigma surrounding hearing loss, as you are more noticeable with a hearing loss than you are wearing a hearing aid.” Free Hearing Assessments in Felixstowe

The Hearing Care Centre, based locally at Grove Medical Centre, in Felixstowe was the first company in the country to have access to the new hearing aid platform called binax, designed and produced by global technology company Siemens.

If you have a hearing loss and have yet to seek help, The Hearing Care Centre has organised a local event that you can attend to have your hearing tested free of charge (saving £20). An Open Day will take place on Monday 16th and Tuesday 17th February 2015 (9am-5pm) at Grove Medical Centre in Felixstowe and appointments must be booked in advance. To book a hearing test and to find out more about the new binax hearing aid, call Freephone 0800 096 2637 or visit www.hearingcarecentre.co.uk

“Hearing aids have developed so much recently that we are now able to make claims such as ‘better hearing than a normal person in certain situations’. This would have been unthinkable ten years ago.

*Two clinical studies have shown that binax provides better than normal hearing in certain demanding environments (Northern Colorado University, 2014; Oldenburg Hörzentrum, 2013): Speech Reception Thresholds in cocktail-party situations improved up to 2.9dB for wearers with mild to moderate hearing loss using Carat binax or Pure binax hearing instruments with narrow directionality, compared to people with normal hearing.

Melvyn Howe, Felixstowe Audiologist for The Hearing Care Centre couldn’t hide his excitement about being able to offer the new technology:

BASIC Life Charity

From the initial idea in 1997, through our acceptance as a registered Charitable Trust in 2000, Felixstowe based BASIC, an independant Charitable Trust, has been able to assist many groups, organisations and individuals with financial, practical and general support. We are a ‘people’ charity and believe our mission is to support those in need and to provide assistance for those who are otherwise prevented from realising their own charitable goals. We are now entering our 16th year as a registered charity having celebrated our 15th anniversary on 20th January 2014. Maybe this is a time to look back at the events and people who have been involved and helped us along the way. Our first shop opened all those years ago in the former drycleaners next to Morrison’s (formerly Safeway). Angela was our shop manager and we were delighted that the shop took off with lots of donations from the Cavendish Park community. After being forced to move we took on another shop at 20 Orwell Road and then moved again to our present premises next door but one to Argos in Hamilton Road. Our Walton shop, opposite The Half Moon, opened in 2011. Over the years we’ve had tremendous support from some wonderful volunteer’s including Sylvia, Mandy, Ingrid, Hazel, Sarah, Christine, Barbara, Sally, Lynn, Jan, Rachel, Steve, Michael, Dexter, Steph, Janet, Lucy, Becci, Debbie, Pat, Dee, Joyce, Claire, Heather & Gwen and many, many more people who have given up their time to support the community. While we have been able to make a lot of donations over the years to assist groups and individuals we feel that maybe our biggest contribution has been to promote a real sense of community.

So, whether we have been enabling local groups to do things they couldn’t otherwise, supporting schools and local children or providing food for those in the most need, we hope that the lives of people have been enhanced over the years. Of course the most thanks goes to our wonderful customers and those who donate the most amazing items to us! We are constantly astounded by the generosity of the people of Felixstowe, Walton and the Trimley villages.

Roses are Red, Violets are… They’re not Blue are They? Do you get St Valentine’s Day? You see I’m not really sure I do. I don’t want to disparage the day, and call me a cynic if you wish, but isn’t it yet another manufactured reason for us to reach deeper into our pockets and spend even more money.

For example, like me you decide to win a few brownie points from your soulmate and take him / her / it to that café you first met in for breakfast. But what is typically £3.24 for a gut-busting, artery-furring full English including a chipped mug of tea has inexplicably gone up to £17.98 for a cold mushroom, greasy hash brown, a teaspoon of beans (and they’re not even Heinz) and a limp chipolata. Just because it’s Valentines day! But you know, you have to hand it to the greetings cards industry when it comes to giving the year’s biggest schmoozey day a true, romantic yet sideways look.

You see, although I’m not into the roses and really sloppy verses on Valentines cards, I think some of the comical cards can give my heart-strings a good old twang, far more than all that mushy stuff.

Go on, you can’t tell me one or two of these don’t make you think of your significant other and render you all gooey: “Love is never having to stand alone in a buffet queue.”

“I’m so glad you’re as weird as me.”

“I love you less than my cat…but still a lot.”

“If love is blind, why is lingerie so popular?” “If girls were bogeys, I’d pick you first.”

So as I draw this syrupy serenade to a close to continue writing Valentine’s Cards to myself….er herm, I mean to my many admirers, what better way to close than with the advice my dear old gran gave me on being in love.

“My dear, love is like wetting yourself. Everyone can see it but it’s only you who can feel the warmth.” Wait! That’s not romantic!!!!

It was but a Dream By Brian Blackmore

The bright winter’s day had been replaced by a cold frosty evening. I stood for a while watching the moon beams ripple on the water – they seemed to be making some sort of pattern; faces, birds and all sorts of wonderful shapes. The colourful lights along the prom reflected in the pools of water left behind by the ebbing tide. A blackbird flew down and landed almost beside me; it stood watching me.

“Is it not time you went to bed Mr. Blackbird?” I softly said. It looked at me as if he understood every word I had said, and then it slowly looked at the skies. He flew off in the direction of the pier so I assumed he would roost the night there. I looked up at the orange light shining down on me. Sitting on the light were two seagulls, then a third arrived and it was as if World War III had broken out as two of them started fighting and screaming at each other. It must be a female, I thought. As I stood watching them I suddenly heard the drone of engines, and across the sea I could just make out the shapes of six enemy aircraft heading straight for Bawdsey Radar. The familiar crackle of the Merlin engine could

be heard coming from inland; there they were, eight RAF Spitfires. Out of the sky they dived and all I could hear was the sound of their guns. Rat-a-tat-rat-a-tat-tat and before I know it all the German planes were seaward bound. Parachutes were seen coming from the aircraft; I counted ten in all, so some of the aircrew never made it. As I watched a seaplane came out of RAF Felixstowe followed by two RAF marine craft, which headed for the drop zone of the downed pilots. The seaplane circled until all the downed aircrew had been picked up. Above me the two seagulls were still at it unaware that the third one had got fed up and flown off. I started to walk home and noticed one of the new container ships heading into the port. The containers were stacked so high that I could visualise myself standing on clouds, as the sky was clear and every star in the universe could be seen. A tug had attached itself to the rear of the ship and another was alongside it. I stood and watched it until it disappeared out of sight around the headland. I continued to walk and the smell of fish and chips drifted into my nostrils so I decided to get some to take home for June and me.

The sudden ring of an alarm bell brought me to my sense. I turned over to kiss June good morning but her side of the bed was cold and empty. On the dressing table was a framed picture of her beside which was a fresh bunch of flowers. “I had a strange dream last night darling,” I said as I kissed her photograph, “It was all about wartime Felixstowe, then ended with one of the large container ships coming into port.” As I went to kiss her again a tear dropped down onto her face… she smiled as if to say thank you. “I love you,” I said as I kissed her again. In loving memory of June Blackmore.

Local Law More news from Jackamans’ budding Solicitor...

A Day in the Life of a Trainee Solicitor As promised, this latest update is coming to you from my new department – conveyancing! I’m now settled in at the Ipswich office with my new team and, as with my last training seat, there is a lot to learn. From searches and surveys to contract exchanges and completion, buying or selling a house is a major step and can be a stressful time for all concerned. I can imagine that the process can be very trying for clients, with so many elements and important decisions in the hands of other parties to the transaction such as mortgage providers and individuals further down the chain who may be unaware of the impact they have on a particular sale or purchase. Despite these frustrations, however, I am looking forward to being able to assist our clients at such an important time in their lives. I can only hope to help make the process as stress-free as possible, so that they can focus their efforts on moving in and enjoying their new home.

of commercial arrangements to get to grips with; this will be largely new to me and I’m really looking forward to seeing negotiation in action. In this fast-paced department, with such a variety of transactions going through, I can’t wait to be up-to-speed and really involved. I’ll be sure to share my experiences with you along the way.
