Welcome to the May edition... I always feel that May is the month which gets the ball rolling for the creative side of life. Starting with Art About Town in May as a pre-event to the annual Suffolk Open Studios in June, the Felixstowe Carnival on 25th - 26th July, later Art on the Prom in September and some great theatre and music performances from now til Autumn. As an artist, I get very excited about how much creativity there is in Felixstowe. Not every town is lucky enough to host such events and house such amazing talents, so I do hope you can all give your support. Keep your eye on our website and the What’s On Listing in each issue for more events. For May’s issue we have some great features to show you, including the likes of our regulars: Local Lad, Mystery Shopper and news from BASIC. We also have the pleasure of showcasing photography from the lovely Gillian Hoffacker who is the local lady behind the camera for our cover shot and a fine sighting of a butterfly (pictured below). As I write this, it is a stunning day and even hit 21°! So I hope you all get to enjoy more gorgeous weather. Education is Freedom Children’s Art Competition

‘Education is Freedom’ is a cause that we at The Felixstowe Magazine are supporting. The concept is to raise awarness and promote the right to education for all children globally. You can find out more about this on our facebook community page: Education is Freedom, and support at: www.justgiving.com/EducationisFreedom.

To get our local children involved, we organised an art competition where they were asked to draw how they would like to see more help being given to people in the world. It was incredibly hard to chose a winner as all children did so well, but we are VERY proud to announce that Freddy (aged 8) from Colneis Junior School is our winner! WELL DONE FREDDY! Here is a selection of the entries we received from the children from Colneis Junior School, some of whom have written their idea behind their drawing.

Adem, aged 10. “It is important we all help animals and people and to be kind to them.”

Megan, aged 10. “The girl is handing an old lady some flowers.”

WINNER: Freddy, aged 8.

Betty, aged 8.

Lola, aged 9. “Someone has fallen off her scooter. Her mum is helping her. She goes to the hospital and needs a wheelchair. Then her mum breaks up the scooter.”

Jade, aged 11. “A girl has fallen over, someone is helping her up.”

War Recollections

The Bombing of Monte Cassino Monastery by Antony Pittaccio

On 18th of May 1944 the allies finally broke through the Gustav Line (the German defensive line that stretched across Italy, East to West, at the centre of which was Cassino) and still today the controversy continues as to who was responsible for the bombing of Monte Cassino monastery, which dominates the entry into the Lira Valley. If you can imagine an inverted (upside down) letter T, the Gustav Line would ran across the horizontal line, the Liri Valley being the vertical line. This valley was the only way out of the Gustav Line and the only way forward for the allied army, so you might ask what all the fuss is about. It was after all just another building like the countless others, which were destroyed across Europe and were there not Germans in the Monastery, directing fire on allied troops, which they could observe over many miles from their uninterrupted view? The answer is that there were no Germans in the monastery. The German General Fridolen von Senger und Etterlin (the most brilliant of all the commanders in Cassino), an Anglophile, Italophile, and anti – Nazi, was a lay Benedictine and he forbade any German to go any nearer than 150 yards from the Monastery.

St Benedict came to the top of the mountain in 529 AD. He converted an existing Roman temple into a Christian church, founded the Benedictine Order and there wrote his famous Rule which still today acts as a guide to Christian monasteries throughout the world. The monastery had been destroyed three times before and each time the reconstruction was due to English monks. For many centuries Monte Cassino was the most important centre of learning in Europe. Students and influential people, including kings, came to it from all over Europe. Long before any universities were founded it taught languages, music, law, medicine, architecture, pharmacy, astronomy, quadrupeds, botany, history and geography. Much of what we know about the dark ages is due to that monastery and that is why it was considered a special place.

We youngsters used to go there with our school a couple of times a year for special tuition and I felt at home because many tributes were paid to Britain over the centuries and there was a written reference, ‘We gratefully want to

Monte Cassino remember Gladstone, Clarendon, Stannley, Forbes and Russel’ which referred to a group of British MP’s known as The Friends of Monte Cassino who pleaded with the Italian government not to suppress the monastery.

To my family, Monte Cassino offered the only means of communication with my father in England. I am not sure how the monastery sent messages but it would be correct to assume via the Benedictine monks from monasteries in Switzerland and England. We only had one or two a year and one year, or maybe two, none at all. Of course, it stopped after the monastery was bombed, when not only did our hopes of receiving news about my father die with it, but also the hopes of all the people to whom it had become a symbol of faith and reassurance that a benevolent God understood their suffering.

The world had indeed become a darkened place with the turning off of that light but the sun sets only to rise again and the bombing of the monastery is now a distant memory.

Old Felixstowe Community Association (OFCA) Photos of the People’s choice OFCA Christmas Tree - Salvation Army display from the Christmas Market 2014

Our Community Centre, located in Ferry Road just past the church, is the focal point of the local community, hosting many clubs and societies which cover a wide range of activities. The Centre offers a comfortable coffee lounge, two large halls, one with an annexe and stage, with a large drop down projector screen and a small meeting room.

There is a hearing loop and we have recently installed a new heating system. For your comfort we now have one hundred new chairs with upholstered seats. The kitchen has kettles, a large water boiler, microwave, fridge, cooker and a large selection of crockery and cutlery. On the occasion of the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee we planted six commemorative trees on Gosford Green, adjacent to the Centre and a plaque was laid. We had a brass quartet, the Mayor led the ceremony and children from two local schools gave us a musical presentation. Many of our members attended and we had a lovely day celebrating as a community. Two hundred limited mugs were commissioned to mark the occasion.

Activities in the Centre include craft, flower arranging, horticulture, line dancing, lace making and social clubs. We have two WI’s, a thriving Stroke support group and the Hope Trust holds a weekly coffee morning to support those who are lonely or bereaved. There is an enthusiastic sports side with indoor bowls, table tennis and two outdoor tennis courts. We also have several exercise classes including chair based exercises for the less mobile. The youngsters are not left out as we have a lively toddler group which gives young children and their parents the opportunity to have fun and socialise. There are also Rainbows, Brownies,

Guides, Beavers, Cubs and Scouts sections.

In June each year we hold a Summer Fair when the users of the Centre get together to raise money to help with the annual upkeep. In December we have a Christmas card delivery scheme covering Felixstowe, Walton and the Trimley’s. Many members help sort the cards and act as ‘posties’ and this is a popular fundraiser.

Monthly markets are held on the second Saturday of each month from 10am to 12 noon where we usually have over 30 stalls. We sell cakes, crafts, jewellery, books, cards, jigsaws and bric-a-brac. Entrance is free, there is a comfortable coffee lounge where refreshments are served and you are assured of a warm welcome and a bargain. To join OFCA the membership is £2 for an individual or £3 for a family. The membership year starts in May and you will receive six Newsletters a year informing you of what’s on. If you would like to become a member please give Elaine Wright a ring on 01394 274623.

Our hire rates are very competitive and booking details can be obtained from Sue Fulcher on 01394 279124. If you would like a stall at the monthly markets, please contact Jane Bolton on 01394 286710.

Mystery Shopper

9

Reviewing the latest and greatest of Felixstowe, here’s our Mystery Shopper to bring you her take on the best of our town...

The Regal Fish Bar & Restaurant When our waitress asked us if we wanted ice cream after our fish and chips at The Regal, I had to say ‘no’. Why? Because I couldn’t finish my dinner and therefore I wasn’t allowed dessert. I am quite aware that I’m pushing fifty, but if my mum told me that I can’t have dessert if I don’t finish my dinner – it still stands! Don’t get me wrong, I loved my haddock and chips! The chips tasted like potato, and looked like they had actually been cut from a potato; they were crisp, dry and fluffy inside. The battered fish was really crispy and the centre had that juicy, savoury-sweetness that is unique to haddock. I was starving and might have even managed the entire European haddock quota that was mine – had it not been for the Stilton mushroom starter (very nice by the way). An important thing to remember is that your eyes are bigger than your stomach as you get older, and if you want to stay in the ‘Clean Plate Club’, you need to consider forgoing the starter! My dear husband had no such problem and happily waded his way through Rock Eel and chips, preceded by a prawn cocktail. What can I tell you about The Regal? The food was hot, tasty and generous, exactly what you would expect from a fish and chip restaurant. The menu was limited, in a positive way, in as much and the offerings were simple, but cooked very well. The service was prompt and friendly and everyone

Private Tuition Wanted With exam season coming up and parents looking for greater support for their children’s education, we’ve been asked recently if we know of any private tutors.

If you are a Maths, English or Science teacher and would like to have the opporunity to nurture some local children between 6-14 years old, with their studies, then please get in touch. We have also been asked to help a young lad who has autism if there is a local teacher who specialises in working with children with special needs and can help him generally. UNDERWOOD HAR Although Underwood Hardware has been in Hamilton Road since 1946, Malcolm the manager is still told by customers on a regular basis that ‘they never realised how far back the shop goes’. It does in fact go right back to Penfold Road... Did you know at the rear of the shop there is a comprehensive garden section selling a vast array of items including tools, hose reels, lawnmowers and strimmers, garden ornaments, hanging basket equipment, flower pots - plastic and terracotta, canes and posts, and by the time you read this a wonderful selection of locally sourced plants, vegetables, fruits and herbs, or if you feel like starting from scratch look in store as they are a main agent for Thompson & Morgan seed company, either way you can grow your way to five a day.

We did not know there were so many types of composts! Underwood’s stocks them all, and to kick start the season they are offering 3 large bags of J. Arthur Bowers multipurpose compost for £10 and buy 2 get 1 free on full size grow bags. They have also been an agent for Calor Gas for a long time and stock all the popular sizes and always keep a large stock, whatever the weather. There is always a selection of quality Hutton Garden furniture on display from wooden garden benches and love seats to bird tables, along with other brands.

There is also “Curly Coats” Dog Groomers and the showroom for Felixstowe Blinds and Awnings and Mark Johnson Windows, along with “Off Pat” the art studio at the far end of the premises.

151 Hamilton Road, Felixstowe

RDWARE RDWARE & D.I.Y LTD LTD The tool department keeps a wide range of tools with items to suits all budgets from the occasional user to the professional tradesman, they are a main agent for the Draper Tools Company whose vast range in second to none.

There is a huge range within the shop of garden chemicals and alike from lawn fertilizers to Jeyes Fluid.

Moving on to the decorating department we see a Crown/ Berger paint mixing scheme where they can mix emulsion, gloss, or satin at the press of a button, in fact they have over 5000 colours to choose from. So if you have seen a particular colour that you have set your heart on why not give them a look as they can mix up small amount for you to try, or supply a colour swatch. Over recent months they have increased the range of items in the plumbing and electrical department to a level where you need to look no further for most jobs around the home.

Although they do not sell camping tents due to pressure from the internet they seems to stock everything else related to particular hobby from knives and forks to cookers and gas. Then within the store there is a great selection of kitchenware from all the major brands Stellar, Judge, Pyrex, Kitchen Devil , Thermos and Fiskars to name but a few, in fact they can supply almost everything the household requires. The domestic side is also well stocked with items from an indoor washing line to a yard broom; in fact I don’t think I have ever seen such a wide choice of brooms and brushes.

All in all, a great shop with a vast selection and prices that are often much lower than the out of town superstores, so no need to spend time and petrol when so much choice is on your doorstep.

Local Law More news from Jackamans’ budding Solicitor...

A Day in the Life of a Trainee Solicitor

This month I thought I’d cover an issue which already affects 500,000 homes in the UK and is likely to become even more relevant as our dependence on renewable energy sources grows – solar panels. Whilst some homeowners are happy to buy solar panels outright, many have been tempted by companies offering free rooftop installations in exchange for receiving ‘Feed-in Tariffs’ (incentivising payments under a government scheme). This suits the homeowner, who receives free electricity without any outlay, however the interest of the company is invariably secured by way of a lease of the airspace above the property which may have unforeseen repercussions.

further requirements of the lender in question. If not, bear in mind that any potential purchaser of the property (solar panels and all) may need to jump through these hoops – if the lease is non-compliant. This may dramatically reduce the market appeal of your house as mortgage-assisted purchasers may be excluded. Such leases can contain onerous clauses designed to protect the lender’s interests which certainly needs to be considered carefully.

If the consent of your mortgage lender is needed (which is almost certain if your property is subject to a mortgage), the lease will probably need to comply with the Council of Mortgage Lenders’ minimum standards as well as any

This article provides only a general summary and is not intended to be comprehensive. Special legal advice should be taken in any individual situation. For further information do contact our conveyancing department on 01394 279636

Each lease will have different terms so it is important to check exactly what you are signing up to. What happens if you need to remove the panels to repair your roof, for example, and will you be liable for any lost Feed-in Tariffs while the panels are out of action?

Solar panel leases can be a great way to obtain free, green energy while keeping costs down, but it must be understood that these arrangements can be complicated and guidance should be sought.

13 Random ramblings by the lovely Dean Wales...

It’s a Wrap

Okay I’ve calmed down now, but ooh I was peeved a few moments ago. ‘So what got you so irked, dear sir?’ I hear you ask. Packaging. Yep that’s right, the packaging which is so beautifully and eloquently referred to as the ‘clamshell’ system which encases so many items one purchases these days.

I thought I was over reacting just a soupçon when I lobbed my freshly acquired apparatus across my spacious lounge, still enveloped in its impenetrable armour. That was until I googled it.

It’s such a common occurrence nowadays that there’s even a term for it, yes, the condition I’m referring to dear reader is aptly named ‘Wrap Rage’. It appears I’m not alone you see, as according to a British study over 60,000 people each year become so enraged when trying to open food items alone, that they end up in hospital as a result of injuries caused by opening the packaging.

And how about this? A study conducted by the Institute of Good Medicine reported that 17 percent of folk over the

age of 21 were either injured or knew a person who was injured while trying to crack into a Christmas or birthday present. What?! I never realised socks, Y-Fronts and soap on a rope came packaged like that!

Injuries from packaging include a cut finger, cut hand, sprained wrist, bruised hand, strained shoulder muscle and displacement of a cold-sore scab…okay well the latter wasn’t cited in the official survey but that’s what happened to me just now, alright, so I thought I’d include it. And yes I know now I shouldn’t have tried to open it with my teeth!

And it’s not just those items in the blister packs which cause such vexation, how about sweets? I’ve personally witnessed an audience member of Les Miserables, shower at least three rows of theatre-goers with Galaxy Minstrels. What should have been a gentle parting of the opening of the sweetie pouch ended up being a rage-fuelled slashing of the bag and resultant propulsion of countless, brown glossy disks into the backs of peoples’ heads.

What really annoyed me about my latest purchase however is how the futile instructions on the ludicrous packaging were to open it using a pair of scissors. Yeah thanks, I don’t have any scissors, that’s why I just bought a pair! @deanwales

Local Event

Live Music at Felixstowe Ferry Saturday 16th May 2015

A watchkeeper on duty inside the lookout.

As part of their ongoing fund-raising programme Felixstowe Coastwatch will be putting on ‘Live at the Ferry’ at the Felixstowe Ferry Sailing Club.

An evening of live music will start at 7.45pm, with Cats in the Kitchen, a Chelmsford based soft rock band. Since 2010 they have released two CDs and will be playing covers and a selection of their own songs. After the interval, In Tandem will take to the stage. A three piece Felixstowe based folk band, which includes Coastwatch watchkeeper, Ian Clarke, on guitar. They will be playing traditional and contemporary folk songs along with some of their own material. They regularly play at open mic nights around Suffolk. Tickets are priced at £5 per person and there will be a bar available. All the profits will go to Felixstowe Coastwatch. Tickets can be obtained from either Alan Peck (01473 251171) or Martyn Lloyd (01394 283589).

Coastwatch continuously need to raise money to operate and maintain their lookout station on top of the Martello tower at the Manor end of the seafront, however there are also aims to build a sub-station that would overlook the entrance to the River Deben. The approaches to Felixstowe Ferry are notoriously dangerous with shallow waters and

very rapid currents. This second lookout station is currently at the design and approval stage, with many hurdles to overcome before it can be built.

Providing all the hurdles can be jumped, this live music night will spearhead a major fundraising campaign. Senior Watchkeeper, Alan Peck, stated that it would be the most costly exercise they have ever undertaken, however if a new sub-station saved just one life it would be worthwhile. The aim would be to watch over the many boats and pleasure craft operating in this area and to liaise with the Coastguard and RNLI in the event of an incident. Alan said that a simple engine failure can rapidly lead to serious trouble in this area. In the past Felixstowe Coastwatch have only had enough volunteer members to operate at weekends, public holidays and during the school summer holidays. A significant increase in volunteers over the past two years means that with effect from May 2015 they will begin a seven days a week operation. Alan said that in the event of the proposed new sub-station going ahead they would need to undertake a significant new recruiting campaign later this year.

BASIC Life Charity

From the initial idea in 1997, through our acceptance as a registered Charitable Trust in 2000, Felixstowe based BASIC, an independant Charitable Trust, has been able to assist many groups, organisations and individuals with financial, practical and general support. We are a ‘people’ charity and believe our mission is to support those in need and to provide assistance for those who are otherwise prevented from realising their own charitable goals.

Babs at last years Fun Run

Shopping in our Walton shop.

Stocking up with the food bank.

Graham dishing out the raffle prizes at the Bombay Nite Charity Dinner.

As we enter May, one of the much anticipated events in the town takes place – yes, it’s the Rotary Club of Felixstowe Charity Fun Run on the 4th.

We are also well into ‘car boot season’ now and we have decided that we would like to do partnerships with any other local causes.

If you are taking part, why not run for BASIC? We would love to be represented again.

If you represent a Felixstowe charity or established local cause, we would be happy to supply stock for you to sell. The proceeds can then be split with half back to BASIC and the other half to your cause. All we ask is that you supply the ‘elbow grease’ and effort as we simply don’t have the time – but we do have the stock!

No doubt the route will be lined with spectators cheering their relatives and friends on as usual, while the competitors negotiate the climb up Bent Hill and the route back along the prom – always something to enjoy watching!

Art by Mandeep Birdy

We love to support the other charities in the town and we think this is a good, tangible way to do that.

Last month we enjoyed a wonderful meal at Walton’s finest – Bombay Nite, for our charity meal in partnership with The Felixstowe Magazine who raised money for the Tej Rasila International School’s appeal.

As usual the food was delicious, the company fantastic and both BASIC and Tej Rasila raised money, so thank you to all who came along. You can see photos from the event on The Felixstowe Magazine facebook page, so go ahead and take a look. It was such a great night that we’ll be repeating it again soon, so watch this space and if you’d like to know when the next event is, email info@thefelixstowemagazine.com.

Finally we will be having at least one ‘everything half price’ day in the next month!

These have proved to be very successful in the past so watch out for our posters advertising the half price days, the night before they happen, in our shops! Have a great April!

It is Just a Thought By Brian Blackmore

Two years before I was born, a Scotsman by the name of Robert Wilson-Watt, had an idea on how to send a radio signal that would bounce off an object and return to its original source. He, along with his colleague, Arnold Wilkins, was given the opportunity to prove their idea at the Suffolk village known as Bawdsey. In the September with the help of the BBC transmitter, they successfully managed to bounce a singal off an incoming aircraft back to their base at Bawdsey and by the time I was born the whole system was operational. During their trials they spent weeks bouncing signals into the upper atmosphere before they actually got it right. In 1936 the BBC transmitted its first television programme, and using a different frequency to Robert and Arnold, gave them the idea to use the same frequency, hence they were able to bounce the signal much further. Thanks to the invention of Radar, the Spitfire and Hurricane plus the bravery of those in the armed forces, we were saved from an invasion.

It was not until December 1980 that Bawdsey Radar entered my mind. It was the sighting of a UFO on the East end of the runway at USAF base and midway between RAF Woodbridge, that I began to wonder if there had been any connection between the UFO and Bawdsey Radar. Let’s face it, Woodbridge is only a stone’s throw from Bawdsey. The UFO was seen over Rendlesham Forest over the Christmas period of 1980 and became known as ‘the Rendlesham Forest incident’ and is amongst some of the most famous sightings on our planet. Some people here in Felixstowe claimed they saw it, as Bawdsey is only a five minute crossing on the ferry from us. The sightings were witnessed by several officers and NCO’s of the USAF and radiation tests were carried out proving something had landed. Prints from where the feet of the craft has landed were also found by an

Pole fitness in Felixstowe www.polearties.org.uk

NCO who took photos of them. He even touched them and claimed they were wam to the touch.

With all the activity of signals being bounced out into space in the thirties from Bawdsey, I wondered if perhaps they were picked up by aliens who became curious and decided to pay us a visit. I hear you laugh, saying that the nearest planet like ours is over a thousand light years away, but, after WW1 the fastest thing on earth was perhaps the Tiger Moth with a top speed of 150 mph. Today we have jets that can do over 3000 mph and rockets that can travel far out into space, even to our nearest planet, Mars. So please don’t laugh.

I personally have witnessed four sightings. Two were while I was stationed in Australia. My late wife was with me when we saw them. One was while I was in Aden in 1966, which stopped and hovered in the sky above myself and a friend of mine for a good ten minutes, then suddenly flew off toward space at a horrendous speed, that no aircraft I knew of could do. Then in Thetford, my wife and I saw one and again we saw one in the eighties in Northampton. But back to the Bentwaters sightings I still think that somehow there is connection between that and Bawdey Radar. P.S. An NCO who had been one of the witnesses to the sighting claimed in 1994, while under regression hypnosis, that the beings were not extraterrestrials, but from our own planets future. Is that not food for thought? Brian A Blackmore
