EVENT - GIPPESWYK SINGERS Gippeswyk Singers, accompanied by the Classic Chamber Orchestra and conducted by Geoff Lavery, are presenting the St John Passion by J.S. Bach on Good Friday evening in Felixstowe. Featuring four young professional soloists and choir member Brian Latchem, who will be singing the role of Pilate, this will be a deeply moving performance of Bach’s intensely dramatic setting of the crucifixion story. Brian Latchem (baritone) began singing at the age of six and his career teaching music and drama in local schools led to his involvement in many musical productions over the years, including musical director for The Sound of Music and Gigi at the Spa Pavilion. He has been the assistant musical director of the Dorian Singers for many years and also sings with the English Concert Singers, a national choir who have performed some of his own compositions. Gippeswyk Singers have enjoyed having him in the choir since January 2017. Brian has spent his life composing music which has been well received both here and abroad. He has written a beautiful piece for choir, baritone and harp entitled An Abundance of Blessings which will be premiered in a Summer Concert by the Gippeswyk Singers on Sunday 24th June at Rushmere St Andrew’s Church in 4

The Felixstowe & Woodbridge Magazine - March 2018

A wonderful upcoming event by the popular Gippeswyk Singers! Ipswich, just prior to the Gippeswyk Singers Summer Tour to the West Country. When he’s not singing or composing, Brian finds time for calligraphy, watercolour painting and cake decorating, recently impressing the choir with an exquisite Christmas cake decorated with the Gippeswyk Singers logo. Event Details: St John Passion - J.S. Bach Soloists: Sarah Rebecca Gallop (soprano), Chloe Pardoe (mezzo), Michel Collins (Christ), Will Searle (Evangelist) and Brian Latchem (Pilate) Good Friday 30th March 2018 7.30pm with conductor’s pre-concert talk at 7.10pm. INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY - CELEBR

“Positive attitude = positive outcome” Zoe Gibbs - Local Photographer I’m a portrait and wedding photographer based in Felixstowe, specialising in bump and baby photography. I opened my photography studio within Underwoods Hardware in August 2015, after completing an apprenticeship with a leading Suffolk photography studio. The most influential woman in my life has been my older sister Kayleigh, who has always chased after her dreams, no matter how big or small. With an eight year age difference, the sibling rivalry still exists - yet I have always looked up to her whilst watching her achieve everything she wanted to and that set the bar high for me from a very young age! Frankly it is so hard to choose just a single achievement, but I can think of two that run a close race; firstly, achieving my Licentiate qualification with the Master Photographers Association in March 2015 at age 20. I can never forget that feeling of accomplishment, and that feeling is spurring me on to reach my next goal. The second is opening my studio, which I am so happy has worked out well - it was a pretty scary experience going self-employed so early in my life but I was determined to make it work, and so it has! 6

The Felixstowe & Woodbridge Magazine - March 2018

My next qualification with the Master Photographers Association ‘Associateship’. This is the second of three qualifications with the MPA and it’s certainly not an easy one, but I am aiming to achieve it by the time I turn 25. When it comes to your own personal goals, without hopefully sounding too cheesy, it doesn’t matter how crazy your dream is, just believe in yourself and you will achieve it. Don’t let anybody crush your dreams (those pesky pessimists and realists!). A quote that I’ve always lived by is: positive attitude = positive outcome, so always set goals for yourself so you can push yourself to be the person you always wanted to be!

“Steer clear of the doubters” Angela Hagan - Editor of Living in Felixstowe There's nothing better than cosying up with a glass of wine or cup of tea and reading a great magazine! Even when I was little I loved reading a good mag. Bringing out a

RATING EXTRAORDINARY LOCAL WOMEN magazine is an extension of that enjoyment - we get to meet so many amazing people, it'a complete honour and privilege when someone allows you to tell their story. My parents brought me and my two sisters up to believe we could find success in whatever we wanted (as long as we put the hard work in!) and along the way I've been very lucky to meet and interview lots of inspirational people, especially female role models, from the likes of Helen Mirren, Joanna Lumley, Victoria Beckham even Katie Price who is a sharp-minded businesswoman - they have all succeeded in mostly male-orientated industries and have paved the way for other future women. In terms of future goals... World domination! Failing that, I'd love to see my first novel published. I'm about halfway through it. Making a living out of writing and having my son is what I’m proud of the most. When I was an angst-ridden teenager I was told by a careers adviser, who'd known me for all of 90 seconds, that I should really forget about becoming a journalist and maybe aim for something more achievable. I'm so pleased I didn't listen to her. So my advice is to steer clear of the doubters and never believe anyone when they say you're not good enough. I hugely disagree with the current thinking in education where children studying for GCSE's are encouraged to attain a certain grade. So if you've only ever averaged a C grade in maths or English, then that's what they expect you to achieve in the final exams and that's the level you'll be taught at. What a load of rubbish! If you tell a child that they're mediocre and are probably only going to achieve a C grade at the most, then it's setting them up for failure. Why can't we tell them ALL that they could achieve an A? What's wrong with encouraging them to reach for the stars? I have met so many famous people and they all had huge self-doubts and knock backs along the way; the only difference between them and others is that they picked themselves up after each setback, dusted themselves down and persevered.

“There is much wisdom in trying to be ‘present’ in the now and live in the moment...” Minnie Moll - Joint Chief Exec of East Anglian Co-op I am the Joint Chief Exec of the East of England Co-op and was drawn to it because of their ethics and values. It’s really important to me to work in a business that believes in doing well and doing good. I have been here nearly four years and I can proudly say that we really do balance being a business for people and communities, not just for profit. I am an Ambassador for Fresh Start, a charity that provides vital support for child victims of sexual abuse. Having been abused myself as a child, I know how damaging it can be. At the end of last year, something fell into place for me and I felt ready to use my personal experience in any way that would support the charity, the children and their families. I became their first Ambassador. The charity has a waiting list and I hate to think of a child being brave enough to tell someone and then having to wait to get the special support that Fresh Start can give. They really can help a child to feel safe and happy again. more on page 12... March 2018 - The Felixstowe & Woodbridge Magazine 7

...CONTINUED FROM It’s a very positive charity. What I have learned through becoming an Ambassador for Fresh Start is that we can turn our rocks into rocket fuel. We all have rocks to carry and if we can find a way to turn those rocks into rocket fuel and do something good with it, it gives you your power back.

STAND OUT FROM THE CROWD

I am very lucky to be an optimist and a natural enthusiast so I am inspired by much around me; art, music, the kindness and bravery of people. I think my parents instilled in me to always do my best. What motivates me the most is working with bright, curious people with a shared purpose. You can move mountains with a great team. I count my blessings and I know that happiness is in the little everyday moments.

ADVERTISE WITH US FROM JUST £30 PER MONTH

The book ‘The Power of Now’ sums it up; try not to dwell in the past because you can’t change it, don’t fret about the future as it hasn’t happened yet. There is much wisdom in trying to be ‘present’ in the now and live in the moment.

I am generally proud to be in the role that I am, feeling I have done that in my own way and in my own style. In terms of future goals, I want to work on my coaching skills so I can coach and mentor much more in the future. When it comes to reaching your goals, I’d advise that firstly, have tangible goals and write them down. Then make a plan to achieve them. Sounds simple but writing your plan down is important and the more specific you are about the actions you need to take, the more focused you will be. Whatever your goals, having a coach or mentor can really help you achieve them. There are also many excellent coaching books out there but I don’t think anything beats having a person to listen, question, support and encourage you to be the best you can be. We ladies need to believe in ourselves more and say “yes” before we’re ready. Men do that all the time.

PAGE 7 son are amazing, sound, level-headed, compassionate young adults, with a good education. My daughter and her boyfriend have bought their own home. My son has good, solid friendships, a lovely girlfriend and is grateful for the way that I have raised him.

“Paint the sky, make it yours” Monique Varley-Nan - Foster Carer In 2006, I was a single Mum, looking after my two young kids. Natasha was nearly 10 and Matthew was nearly 8, when I spotted the advert for FCA (Foster Care Associates). I had always worked, but when my children were born, I wanted to be the one to raise them. What could be better than continuing to be able to raise my own children, full-time, whilst being able to contribute to society? I had lots of life experience and chose to parent my children very differently to the way I was parented. What motivates me in fostering is my passion to make a difference to people’s lives, no matter how great or small. I am inspired by small successes, by progress made and by those priceless moments, when young people give you a glimpse of what they may be feeling inside, in terms of the love and support (as well as good boundaries) that you have given them. To make fostering work, it takes a great deal of investment. You need to be available, you need to listen, to read between the lines, to feel, to give… physically, mentally and emotionally. You need to be able to put yourself in someone else’s shoes and look at things from an outside perspective. You need to be able to put others first, whilst ensuring that you look after yourself, too. And you always have to understand that there are reasons for the challenging behaviours and that it is not the young person’s fault. The achievements that I am most proud of, are the fact that my daughter and

In terms of fostering, one of our greatest achievements is seeing a young lad through to independence, successfully, who at 18 is persistent with his education, has managed to hold down a part-time job and is grateful that we taught him right from wrong, as it has all made him “the man he is today”. Also, a young lady we looked after is now a mum of two gorgeous children. She told her previous social worker that the reason she is such a good mum is because of her placement with us. This makes me feel humble and very privileged. My goal is to continue to foster young people. We now work for Suffolk County Council, since 2011, as in-house placements are much more forthcoming and no-one goes into fostering to have an empty room. I have learned that you should follow your gut instinct and that you should do what makes you happy and what you are passionate about. Don’t be afraid to be different… This last year was the most challenging in terms of fostering. At one point, we had 21 Police cars in front of our house, in just 20 days. I still haven't spoken to the new neighbours across the road, yet, to let them know that we are not as "undesirable" as they may think. We have had to deal with missing persons, medical emergencies, close calls, school exclusions and some dangers. However, not everything about fostering is challenging. A lot of young people just "fit in" and have the amazing ability to adapt and make the most of what they've been given; another home, a different bedroom, a different family (one that will never replace their own birth family... and we are very respectful of that), different food, a new neighbourhood, sometimes a new school, new friends... They develop a different attitude, resilience, understanding, acceptance and gratitude. For that, I am so grateful and I feel privileged. Fostering is a privilege. For me, it is not a job. It's a vocation; a life-style. I am passionate about fostering and I love it. To all our foster children; present, past and future, I'd like to say this... paint the sky, make it yours. BAKED AVOCADO & EGGS

Who says you can’t have brunch for dinner? This dish is impressive if you’ve got guests staying over and want to treat them to a gorgeous breakfast, but it works just as well for tea time too! Ingredients to serve 2: 1x Large Avocado 2x Eggs

Handful of on-the-vine baby or plum tomatoes 1/2 cucumber

1/2 tbsp balsamic or rice wine vinegar 1 tsp olive oil

1/2 tsp honey

1 1/2 tsp chopped dill

Plus 50g smoked salmon or cooked bacon for a meat option Method:

Crack an egg into each half and place on a baking tray, then bake for 15 minutes and until set. If you have a dual oven you can grill the tomatoes whilst the avocado halves bake. If not they can also be fried in a little butter in a covered frying pan. If you are including bacon in your recipe you can also cook this with the tomatoes.

Meanwhile mix the vinegar, olive oil, honey and the dill (leaving a little aside for relish). Peel the cucumber with a vegetable peeler into thin strips and add to the dressing, mixing it through to make a refreshing salad. Divide your salmon or bacon between two plates, add the tomatoes and half an avocado each. Finish with the cucumber salad and sprinkle over the last of the dill. Add salt and pepper to taste.

Preheat the oven to gas 7, 220°C, fan 200°C.

Half the avocado and remove the stone. Scoop out a little extra from the middle of each half to give enough space for the egg.

WHAT IS PHOTOGRAPHY?

Taking a photo is an act of recording light either electronically (with a digital camera) or chemically (with the old film style camera’s). Both have exactly the same concept and results (for the most part) Many people have their thoughts on what a photograph represents. Is it just freezing a moment in time? Just a snapshot of a family member, that best selfie ever, or is it more about creating a piece of art? Some would argue that a photo is not “a piece of art” and yet if you go into any Art museum, along with all those paintings, drawings and sculptures, you’re going to see a whole section dedicated to photography. So yes indeed, photography is very much an art form. Many great photographers have their thoughts on what photography is: “It remembers little things, long after you have forgotten everything.” - Aaron Siskind “Photography is a small voice, at best, but sometimes one photograph, or a group of them, can lure our sense of awareness.” - W. Eugene Smith I personally feel it’s about capturing a moment, bringing to life something so simple and yet so beautiful and being able to tell the truth with a click of a shutter. It’s amazing to think that with the advance of cameras in our mobile devices, billions of photos are taken every few minutes. So photographs are certainly viewed and appear to have different meanings now,

but the concept really remains the same. We are still making photographic memories, we’re just making lots more of them! What I would like to do in the coming months is to share with you some of my ideas of basic photography. A lot of my ideas you will be able to do on your dedicated digital camera of even with your mobile phone camera. Many have the thought that a nice fancy camera always captures great photographs. But this is not true at all! It’s more the way in which the image is captured that decides the clarity and beauty of said image. In order to train oneself into achieving such a perfect capture there are many technical aspects that one should learn. I’ve always liked to use the analogy of when you go and have a great meal at a restaurant, do you compliment the chef because he has a great oven? No, of course not. His skills created that great dish. His oven was just a tool to help him. My point, a great camera won’t get you great photos (like the fancy oven won’t make you a great cook or produce a fantastic meal). It’s about learning the best techniques. Using that tool correctly. Seeing the best opportunity. Understanding light. There are some simple basic steps to help you create better photos. I’m going to try and teach you some of them. Are you ready? BASIC LIFE CHARITY A happy March from your very own local Charity! As usual we’ve been very busy developing ideas for our community. Felixstowe Men’s Shed At the end of January we were delighted to witness the official launch of the Feixstowe Men’s Shed project.

A regular update from a brilliant local charity, providing financial, practical and general support

This is a project supported by many local individuals and groups and we are sure it’s going to be a great success. It’s a chance for men to get together and work on small projects while making new friends.

affordable food and household items.

BASIC have offered to supply items which might need fixing or upcycling. If they are taken on and completed we’ll sell them in our shops with a ‘Made by Felixstowe Men’s Shed’ label and any proceeds can go back to the project.

We hope, in time, the others local supermarkets will join in with the redistribution of food destined for waste, as there is a real need to be met locally.

If anybody is interested in finding out more information please contact Rod on Felixstowe 283467. Food Waste As you know we’re at the forefront of combatting food waste and making redistribution of it a reality in Suffolk. We’ve seen a real increase in customers at all three of our weekly pop-up shops in the early part of the year. Whether it’s due to the post-Christmas bills accumulating, more expensive utilities or just word of mouth we’re pleased to be able to supply 18 The Felixstowe & Woodbridge Magazine - March 2018

In Felixstowe we’re so fortunate to have the support of major supermarkets like Tesco and Morrisons each and every week.

Spring! As we near the end of a sometimes freezing, winter and look forward to spring – what better place is there to enjoy the change in the season than Felixstowe? We will be changing stock in both of our shops as we enjoy that little bit of time when the weather is [hopefully] a little warmer before the holiday season arrives. Dare we say it’s a good time to visit us to get some new t-shirts, shorts and maybe even a sun hat in anticipation of another beautiful summer in our lovely seaside town?

FELIXSTOWE TOWN AND AROUND I start this article with a warning! Ladies, keep your eye on your purses and gentlemen do the same with your wallets! I was the victim of having my purse stolen in The Card Factory during January and it left me feeling violated and vulnerable – not feelings I liked! I was selecting a card for my daughter and the person next to me kept getting in my way. I think was part of the set up of stealing from people. I then felt a bump on my back and when I looked round couldn’t see anyone as the shop was full – but when I got to the counter my bag was open and my purse gone! Thankfully the bank was open and I immediately went and cancelled my card which hadn’t been used – but dread to think with contactless payments how much I might have lost had I not been able to cancel my card so quickly! To my knowledge I was one of several thefts that day in various shops. I then met someone I knew who had had his wallet containing a large amount of money in it taken from his pocket whilst in Lidl. So do be aware. The memorial services to remember the 65th anniversary of the 1953 flood held at St. John’s and at the flood memorial garden on the 31st January were both moving and emotional. Hearing some of the testimonies of people caught up in the flood were heart breaking and sad and when the names and ages of those who died were read out and it became clear how many young children had died that night. It was very sad. Children from Langer School placed candles on the memorial garden representing each of the 41 people who died. One of the interesting committees to which I am appointed by the District Council is the Merchant Navy Welfare Board Port Welfare Committee. Meetings are held at the Seafarer’s Centre at the

Update from Felixstowe’s town councillor Port and in Harwich Guildhall. I really love these meetings as I learn so much about shipping and seafarers and their welfare and some stories are quite harrowing. Recently the MNWB published a document about the UK’s reliance on Seafarers and a few of the interesting statistics are as follows: £571m of chocolate is exported every year. The UK’s sea ports handle half a billion tonnes of goods a year. As an island nation 95% of the UK relies on imports and exports. 120,000 people from the UK work at sea. The UK imports 465,000 tonnes of potatoes every year which is the equivalent of 38,750 London buses. A large cargo ship contains as much steel as 8 Eiffel towers and has a capacity equivalent to 22,000 20ft containers. These containers would fill more than 30 trains each a mile long and stacked two containers high and inside you could fit 863 million tins of baked beans! These are just a few of the facts that might make you think when you watch the large container ships coming into Felixstowe and how grateful seafarers are to have a facility like the Seafarers Centre available for their welfare and relaxation. Roll on Spring – it has been a long Winter. Doreen Savage March 2018 - The Felixstowe & Woodbridge Magazine 21

THE RIVERSIDE THEATRE Carmen Live Broadcast from The ROH Tuesday 6th March (live) & Sunday 18th March (encore) Tues 6th March 6.45pm (live broadcast) Sunday 18th March 2pm (encore).

Vincent Van Gogh. A New Way Of Seeing Exhibition On Screen Sunday 25th March - 3pm

This ever-popular opera is given a fresh point of view in Barrie Kosky’s highly physical production, originally created for Frankfurt Opera. The Australian director is one of the world’s most sought after opera directors. For Carmen he has devised a far-from-traditional version, incorporating music written by Bizet for the score but not usually heard, and giving a new voice to the opera’s endlessly fascinating central character.

Delving deep into his fascinating and sometimes deeply troubled world comes this definitive, award-winning documentary directed by David Bickerstaff. Showcasing Van Gogh’s iconic works like never before and featuring exclusive interviews with the curatorial team at the Van Gogh Museum.

Lady Windermere’s Fan Tuesday 20th March & Sunday 25th March (Encore) As Live 12A Cert Tuesday 20th March 7.15pm Sunday 25th March (Encore) 4.30pm. A new production of Oscar Wilde’s social comedy directed by awardwinning writer, actor, and director Kathy Burke. She brings together a talented comedic cast including the Olivier Award winning actress Samantha Spiro, Kevin Bishop, and guest starring Jennifer Saunders, marking her return to the West End stage.

Perhaps more than any other artist, Van Gogh’s life has long captured the imagination of storytellers.

Bernstein Centenary Tuesday 27th March - 7.15pm Leonard Bernstein the composer, conductor, educator, musician, cultural ambassador and humanitarian, was one of the first classical composers in America to achieve both popular and critical acclaim. To celebrate the centenary year of the composer’s birth, The Royal Ballet has united all three of its associate choreographers to celebrate the dynamic range and danceability of Bernstein’s music. At the heart of the programme is the first revival of Artist in Residence Liam Scarlett’s The Age of Anxiety, created in 2014 to Bernstein’s soul-searching Second Symphony.

REVIEW OF ‘THE TREE CHILDREN’ BY REBECCA DANESE Book review of upcoming children’s author and soon to be household name The Tree Children is a beautiful tale of wonder and adventure. Victor and Violet are two everyday children, twins but as different as night and day. Victor is the loud and adventurous one while Violet is quiet and loves nothing better than a good book. Growing up in a family of boys, and being a voracious reader myself I can certainly relate to Violet; and Violet steps out of the pages of her book into a real-life adventure, just as I always dreamed of doing. They live at the edge of town, in a cottage and at the end of their garden is a forest. It turns out to be no ordinary one, but rather a magical forest, the entrance to another world. Being a magical world right on the threshold to ours, it rather reminded me of The Magic Faraway Tree and The Magic Wishing Chair, stories I always loved. A place that children both within the story and without can immerse themselves in the fun and fantastical. One day though, Victor goes missing, and the only clue Violet is left with is Victor’s talk about his friends of the forest. Pushed into the role of rescuer, she is left with luck, courage and the things she’s gleaned from stories; luckily in the forest she finds Leif, who turns out to be a tree child and there the enchanting journey begins. A journey that takes them through wild lands, living trees,

where they meet elf wraiths, a magical king and evil sorceress. I enjoyed the tale immensely, it may be written for children, but it holds its own as a book worth reading by adults, all adults that enjoy leaving the mundane behind and for just a few hours, living a fairy-tale adventure once again. A story that I believe many parents will enjoy reading to their children, though the kids may just sneak it away to read under their covers at night once the lights are out. PACKAGING THAT TAKES THE BISCUIT! Random ramblings by our local lad May I have a little rant? Please, can I? Look, I know I can be considered as a little grumpy from time to time but I must point out that whenever I explain what’s rattled my cage, folk more often than not empathise with me, so it’s not just me. Sometimes they even end up a little miffed too! So what kicked this all off then? As usual, it was something quite trivial. Breakfast biscuits! No that little outburst wasn’t a printable, family-friendly alternative to an expletive, it’s what annoyed me the other day. Breakfast biscuits. Yes, okay, I’ve been ticked off about this by my colleague who has a 2:1 Degree in nutrition, or is it a CSE in Home Economics? If it’s not one it’s the other. She was horrified when she discovered I partake in such an indolent pre-dawn nutritional ritual – she’s not one for using simple terms! But I’m sorry, I don’t have time to forage for locally sourced oats, cob nuts, goji berries individually cultivated after the first frost by nuns in peacock habits and Manuka honey (is there such a thing as locally sourced Manuka honey outside New Zealand?) to roast my own nutritionally balanced granola. I just don’t have the time in the morning for that. Especially now that I have athlete’s foot… do you know how long it takes to apply talcum between your phalanges after the gym? Anyway back to my point. I bought a pack and after a long and hard work out I was looking forward to munching my way through 3 delicious maple syrup and beetroot biscuits, specially formulated to provide an entire morning’s worth of energy. I jumped in the car, set off, stopped at the first red traffic light and decided to open the little foil pack of morning sustenance.

I did. They exploded! Everywhere! There were crumbs in places I never knew existed, both on my person and in my car. And this didn’t just happen once. The entire box contained scatter bombs of the oat variety. Unbeknownst to me at the time, I even attended an important meeting that day with crumbs on the seat of my jeans...stuck there by the humidity emanated from my posterior; a condition caused solely from having the car heating up too high that morning and a mild case of nerves. So, why was I so annoyed? Well you know, in my mind biscuits should not get broken, if they do, then change the blooming packaging. And it has happened since. And then there’s bags of peanuts! Have you ever tried to open a bag of peanuts without scissors? I can never successfully open a bag of nuts without struggling with the top seal only for it to finally burst open and propel the salted kernels over a distance of miles. Oh and another thing, now you’ve got me started... By Dean Wales March 2018 - The Felixstowe & Woodbridge Magazine 33

Trinity Players @7.30 pm Trinity Players are performing The Silhouette by Simon Brett at Trinity Methodist Church. In Act 1 of this ingenious thriller, actress Celia is questioned by the police about the murder of her husband. She is obviously in the clear, but Neville, the drunken journalist sleeping in her bed, had been in an argument with him shortly before the murder. The solution seems simple. But Act 2 takes place before the murder, and all our expectations are turned on their heads! Who is silhouetted? This original play will surprise and perplex! Published by Samuel French. MARCH FACTS • In March 1876 - Alexander Graham Bell spoke into his just-completed invention, the telephone. “Mr. Watson, come here. I want to see you.” It worked. • March was the first month of the year until the Gregorian calendar began to be used in 1752. • It was in March 1889 that the Eiffel Tower was officially opened to the public. It was the tallest building in the world for 41 years before being surpassed by the Chrysler Building. • When Russian Alexei Leonov exited the airlock of the Voskhod 2 spacecraft, he became the first human to ever walk in the vacuum of space. He was outside the spacecraft for 12 minutes and nine seconds on 18 March 1965, connected to the craft by a 5.35 meter tether.
