Local Law More news from Jackamans’ budding Solicitor...

A Day in the Life of a Trainee Solicitor

It’s a busy but very exciting time for me at the moment, with a relaxing holiday in the south of France planned, documentation to be completed before I apply to be admitted to the roll of solicitors and lots of marketing and networking events on the horizon. I am one of the many Jackamans team members supporting the Anglia Business Exhibition at Trinity Park on Wednesday 15th June, so please do feel free to join us for a glass of summer punch and a chat at our Wimbledonthemed stand! I thought I would use this month’s update to focus on something which is being mentioned by more and more of our clients - the inheritance tax residence nil rate band. In short, this new relief will mean that where a person dies on or after 6th April 2017 and a main residence is left to lineal descendants, a further exemption may apply to the value of the residence thereby potentially reducing the amount of inheritance tax payable. The additional allowance will start at £100,000 in the 2017-2018 tax year and is then anticipated to rise annually by £25,000 until 2020, subject to tapering if the total estate value exceeds £2,000,000. Clearly this will be of great interest to those who expect the value of their estate to exceed the current nil rate band

of £325,000 (or £650,000 when a deceased person’s nil rate band allowance can be claimed on the death of the surviving spouse), and comprise a main residence which will be left to children or grandchildren (be they biological, step, adopted, fostered or the spouse of such a person). However, until further clarification is provided, the finer workings of the provisions are open to interpretation and predicting their exact application is difficult. It is certainly a very interesting development and Jackamans will be sure to keep you posted, however if you would like to discuss your particular circumstances then, as always, feel free to drop in to any one of our offices. This article provides only a general summary and is not intended to be comprehensive.

Reviewing the latest and greatest of Felixstowe, here’s our Mystery Shopper to bring you her take on the best of our town...

The Talented Works of E.Y Joinery

This month I want to break away from reviewing a shop or restaurant and look instead at the work of E.Y. Joinery. Such is the skill of this independent businessman and tradesman that it warrants credit. The man behind this carpentry business is truly international. Ekrem Yonar was born in Istanbul but from a young age moved with his family to Germany. After completing his military service in Turkey, Ekrem began working as a sales person in the tourist sector of Bodrum, Turkey. In the early 1990’s he came to live and work in England. Keen to learn a trade, he started going to college to study carpentry and joinery. That was twenty-three years ago and since then Ekrem has worked on many commercial and individual carpentry projects in cities such as London, Manchester, Berlin and Istanbul. Now he is in Felixstowe! Ekrem can turn his carpentry skills to many things. He is skilled at laying flooring, (laminate or wooden) making made-to-measure gates and doors, fencing, decking, wooden boat building and repairs, beach hut repairs and construction, shop and exhibition fitments, kitchen or bedroom fittings and wall and floor tiling.

It is, I feel, an asset to have a skilled tradesperson in our town who has travelled and worked extensively on so many projects. He has even worked with some big corporate

names such as Samsung and Starbucks and when he is not working on his carpentry projects, Ekrem enjoys cooking, running and kick-boxing – he is even a qualified kick-boxing instructor!

Random ramblings by the lovely Dean Wales...

Making Shipmates

You would think, if you lumped twenty-three people from different nations together on a small(ish) boat for a week, there would be some friction wouldn’t you? I would. But returning from an unforgettable holiday where thwenty-three folk from locations between and including the antipodes and California (oh yeah, and Prestatyn) slept, ate, sunbathed, drunk (nothing stronger than a sweet sherry for me you understand) and swam in close proximity of one another, I’ve had my mind changed. We truly bonded, we were, however corny this sounds, like one big family within days. But then there was the Scrabble match!

Gail, who is American and was the one from the group who wanted to prove that bread and wine was kept in the tabernacle of an ancient chapel on a walking tour (led by Abigail…the best on the Island), and who promptly wrenched the ornate door from its hinges in doing so, kept score. Oh, and for those of you keen to know the outcome of the tabernacle exposé, it contained nothing more than a set of toenail clippers and a half eaten thing that looked like a Ginster’s pasty. Gail also had the advantage of an app on her phone. A Scrabble App! An app which suggested two letter words like ‘Id’, ‘Og’, ‘Gi’. Oh and of course, Zs were used all over the place. Z, yes that fine little letter which rarely features in

the English spelling of words. Zs, which boast a glorious top score of ten points dear reader. Of course, our cousin from over the pond (Gail) used them where an S suits us just fine. S scores one point by the way! Despite me transforming Gail’s ‘under’ to ‘underpants’, and on a Triple Word Score square to boot (high five that Englishman)…Gail won.

The well-travelled eighty-three year old Tricia (who can’t eat egg white) was the matriarch of the vessel. And despite the rest of us holding our breath whenever she climbed the ladder to the sun deck in case she broke wind (we would’ve been in trouble if we so much as sniggered), she was much loved by the group. Tricia, originally from London, married a Croatian and now lives on the west US coast, couldn’t decide whether to sing ‘Hey Jude’ with us Brits or to lead the ‘Hokey Cokey’ with the US contingent in the Captain’s Dinner, nations ‘sing-off’. She finally did neither and finished off someone else’s Sauvignon Blanc.

In spite of the English (Poms) trying to outswim the Aussies, or indeed out-salsa the pro dancer from Germany in the cocktail bar during happy-hour, we all got along famously. We laughed together all week long. We took a group picture at the end of the holiday, exchanged email addresses, hugged and thanked our fabulous Croatian crew, and told each other how much we’d miss everyone. Now, if only we could get the whole world on a boat together huh? It might just turn out to be happier place.

BASIC Life Charity

Since registering as an independent Charitable Trust in 2000, BASIC has been able to assist many groups, organisations and individuals with financial, practical and general support. We are a ‘people’ charity and believe our mission is to support those in need and to provide assistance for those who are otherwise prevented from realising their own charitable goals. Firstly, we want to say a massive ‘thank you’ to Dave Ainsley who finished his 5th (and final he says) London Marathon on behalf of BASIC!

Felixstowe Parish Nurse

Our Felixstowe Parish Nurse project is progressing and we’ve added funds from donations made at both of our shops over the counter.

Dave raised over £1600 for us and we’d like to thank him and all those who sponsored him for this epic event. Amazing job! To the right is a pic of Dave with his London Marathon Medal. Pop-Up Community shop

During May we started our BASIC Community Pop-Up Shop at St.Edmunds Church, Langer Road.

We’ve been to see Parish Nursing Ministries and we’re building a team to oversee the work of the nurse once employed. We do hope more local people will catch the vision as we know there is a real need for a nurse in our town.

You can donate at either shop or online at: We offer all kinds of food and clothing. With a donation of https://campaign.justgiving.com/charity/basiclife/ £1 per bag (maximum of two bags per person) you can help yourself to a wide selection of food and other products. felixstowenurse We have been working hard with local shops to reduce food waste in our town and we’re pleased that so many are backing the initiative. We’re open every Tuesday from 11am until 1pm so please pop along and grab a bargain.

BASIC Online

If you’re not aware already – we sell lots of items online through Ebay and Amazon.

If you’re a local person you can pick up any item you want from our Walton store. Many regular customers from Felixstowe, Ipswich and even Diss come in to pick up real bargains. If you’d like to see our listings they are available via our website www.basic.org.uk under ‘BASIC Online’.

THE FELIXSTOWE TOWN CRIER UPDATES Felixstowe Town and Around News As I come to the end of my year in office as Mayor I have been reflecting on the events and occasions that I’ve attended during that time. Here are some of them since May 2015.

Top of my list has been the various “openings” that occurred. The much awaited Spa Pavilion theatre and restaurant opened its doors for business in July and since then the reports I hear of the shows that are being staged are proving popular and are well attended. The Restaurant seems to be doing well and I see that the Parlour area under the restaurant has had a makeover and is looking very attractive. This is due to open later in May. The seafront gardens were completed and officially opened at a ceremony that was both wet and windy – but the comments about the gardens were all positive and complimentary. An assessor recently visited the gardens with a view to achieving a Green Flag Award. Fingers crossed the award will be made. A celebration of the gardens and the Queen’s birthday took place in April with musical events throughout the gardens. On Bank Holiday Monday I attended the Rotary Fun Run to start the event. The next much awaited opening was of the Premier Inn. I was delighted when the building work started and watched avidly as it progressed to completion. I was asked to cut a ribbon at the opening along with our MP – and wish every success to this business. The Layden’s Community Centre also had a re-opening after refurbishment and new management. If you haven’t visited this Centre – do give them a look and support the venture. The Layden’s is in Langley Avenue and used to be the old WRVS base.

The Mayor chooses a charity or charities to support during the mayoral year. I chose Felixstowe Citizens Advice Bureau and Felixstowe Sea Cadets. Monies raised during the year at various events are presented to the charities at the Mayor’s Awards evening which was held on the 4th May. Five very worthy people were recipients of the Award having been nominated by someone associated with them and I was delighted to hand out certificates and badges to the chosen people. I also gave an award to Peggy Osborne for her hard work and dedication as my Escort over 4 terms in that role. The Ganges Youth trophy was awarded to Joe Long who is a Scout and also a cadet with St. John’s Ambulance and Certificates of Merit were given to three other young people. The community award was given to OFCA (Old Fellxstowe Community Association). It was a wonderful evening reflecting the wonderful work that is done in the town by individuals and groups. It has been a wonderful year for me! Doreen Savage.

Please mention

Colneis Flower Club I.T.M.A. – It’s That Man Again and David Thomson from Great Leighs did not disappoint. One beautiful arrangement after another appeared on our stage. David used a varied range of containers in which to create mainly traditional arrangements using lovely flowers in purples, pinks, greens, white and yellow, mixed with well conditioned foliage. He not only regaled us with funny stories about his time as a demonstrator but he also gave us interesting tips to help us maximise the life of flowers and foliage and the best way to use them. David really is an inspirational demonstrator giving lots of information to help us create our own arrangements. Once again, by the end of the evening our stage was overflowing with beautiful flowers and there was a sudden surge of people wanting raffle tickets in the hopes of winning one! If you would like a fun filled evening with like minded people why not come along to our next meeting on 16 June at 7.30pm in the Old Felixstowe Community Centre, Ferry Road, IP11 9NB when Wendy Munnion from Maldon will be demonstrating with the theme ‘A Very British Summer’. The practice piece is ‘A Midsummer Ball’. Members - free, Visitors are always welcome - £4. For more information, please call me on 01394 282468.

Lioness Club of Felixstowe During the past month Felixstowe Lionesses have held two enjoyable fundraising events, both of which were extremely well–supported, and both of which raised substantial amounts of money. The Clairvoyant Evening was in aid of the Felixstowe Coastal Rescue Patrol and RNLI, and the Quiz Night in aid of Headway. Thirteen teams battled it out at the quiz, with some teams more competitive than others – though in a good-humoured way! A Ploughman’s Supper went down well too. We are very grateful to those who attended, prepared food, gave raffle prizes or helped in any other way; thank you all. Watch this space for our next fund-raising event. We also found time last month to ‘Clean for the Queen’ with Felixstowe Lions, litter-picking on a chilly Saturday morning on the beach. Hot chocolate at a local hostelry was very welcome after all our efforts! For details of events and information about Lionesses, please email Val: vijinks880@hotmail.com.

Orwell Decorative & Fine Arts Society Our next meeting is on Wednesday June 1st when Oliver Everett will talk on ‘George IV - the greatest Royal Collector of Art. Oliver Everett is Emeritus Librarian at the Royal Library, Windsor Castle. The meeting will be preceded by a short A.G.M at 13.45.

11 At our meeting on May 4th we heard from Tobias Capwell, an expert on medieval armour, how the Renaissance artists would portray knights and heroes in the style of Classical Roman military figures. The style and detail of the Renaissance armour was very Roman-like. A most informative lecture.

Join us as a member. We meet at Tower Hall, Broadlands Way, Rushmere St Andrew on the first Wednesday of most months. Lectures last about an hour, are wonderfully illustrated and are presented by national and international lecturers. Guests and non-members welcome, provided we have available space. A £5 donation is asked. For more info tel. Jean Bradberry on 01473-710921 or email odfasmemsec@btinternet.com. Visit our website at: http://www.orwelldfas.org.uk/ for latest events and news. Felixstowe Waves Swimming Club The Regional Championships which cover Suffolk, Norfolk, Essex, Bedfordshire, Hertfordshire and Cambridge took place over the two Bank Holiday weekends in May.

The first weekend was for the older swimmers at UEA Norwich while the younger swimmers competed at Luton Sports Village. Six swimmers from Felixstowe Swimming Club have qualified this year which is a fantastic achievement. The swimmers and events they have qualified for are as follows; Faye Hermon (50m Butterfly, 50m and 100m Freestyle, 50m Backstroke), Stuart Evans (100m Freestyle), Thomas Boyt (200m Backstroke), Mia Yates (50m Freestyle), Paige Flower (100m and 200m Butterfly) and Brendan Bennett (50m and 100m Freestyle, 50m and 100m Butterfly). The first weekend produced some fantastic results for our club. In their respective age groups Faye Hermon was credited as being the 6th fastest 100m Freestyle and 7th fastest 50m Butterfly swimmer in the Eastern Region. Thomas Boyt was the 9th fastest in the 200m Backstroke and Stuart Evans came first in his 100m freestyle heat. Congratulations to you all for representing Felixstowe with such fantastic swims. More results from the younger swimmers to come in next month’s instalment.

Please contact our membership secretary at: membership@felixstowe-waves.com for more details of our next club taster session or visit our website at: http://www.felixstowe-waves.com.

Felixstowe Family History Society If you have heard that Felixstowe Family History Society is no more or is winding up then this is definitely NOT true. Unfortunately our research room The Tree House has shut but we shall still be able to help you with your research as we are having help sessions at Broadway House (Senior

Citizen’s Day Care Centre) in Orwell Road, Felixstowe. These sessions will be on Thursdays from 10.15am12.15pm and start on 5th May 2016, so come and see us for any help in getting started or furthering your research. If you wish to join the society the cost is £12 for a single membership or £16 for a joint membership (living at the same address). You can join at the research sessions or come along to one of our speaker meetings which are held at Broadway House, Orwell Road, Felixstowe on the 2nd Wednesday of most months starting at 7.30pm. The next meeting (in conjuction with Felixstowe History and Museum Society) is Wednesday 8th June 2016 when the talk will be ‘The Hoxne Treasure’ with Stephen Govier. Meetings are free to members and £1.00 for visitors with refreshments available after the talk.

FADOS News Fados held their AGM last month and were pleased to record a very successful year, both for productions and the increasing use of our premises as a a community asset. It can be available on most days for hire. The contact number is 01394 279 613. Rehearsals are well in hand for Lord Arthur Savile’s Crime, which will be performed at Fados House on 16th, 17th and 18th of June. Although no publicity has gone out yet we are already getting booked up. You are welcome to ring on 01394 671 306 should you want to book early, posters and boards will be out towards the end of May. Rehearsals are at the exciting and nerve racking point of ‘books down’ when everyone wonders why they put themselves through this sort of purgatory! Later in the year we will be running a couple of social evenings, and as soon as June is over we will be planning our next project. If anyone out there is interested in joining us a call to the above number will get you details. We have several new members who are already involved in the current play. Looking forward to seeing you.

The Gainsborough Club On Tuesday April 5th we learned a very useful skill from Mr C Cushing who instructed us in the necessary art of How to Steal a Picture. He took us through a potted history of successful and unsuccessful attempts in this field, some of which were staggering in their blatant cheek. A gentleman once strolled into the Louvre gallery containing the Mona Lisa, took it from the wall, tucked it under his coat and strolled out again. A couple of days later a foreign visitor enquired when it would be back on exhibition, and it was only then it’s absence was noticed. It turned up two years later in Italy!

Our next meeting is on Tuesday May 3rd at 7.30pm in the St Felix Church Hall. The subject will be Felixstowe Forwardthe Seafront Gardens by Mrs Helen Greengrass. Visitors are very welcome, as are new members.

Interviewing local lad, Josh Locke of the band JS and the Lockerbillies was a breath of fresh air...

Josh Locke & His Lockerbillies

Apart from being a very talented singer, musician and a massive Marvel fan, there is so much more to this local fella; he is fun, sociable, intelligent, courteous and rather philosophical. Here’s a bit about this local star...

Raised in Trimley, Josh attended Trimley St Mary School followed by Orwell High School where he played the clarinet, saxophone, the cornet and later, developed an interest in the guitar and double bass. It was his English and form teacher, Mike Meadows, who was not only one of the most influencial people in Josh’s career, but also someone Josh performed with. After higher education at Middlesex University, Josh spent time working on cruise ships between Newcastle and Amsterdam, where he would perform in a band. This is where it all began!

Josh began to gain popularity and fame by performing solo and with his band, J.S. & The Lockerbillies. Along with other band members, Murray Collins, James Hicks, Rich Webb and Harry Green they perform mainly Rockabilly music and also some soul. Josh and the band hope to play with an African drummer at some gigs, to experience a slightly different style of playing. The band members are massively prolific in playing many types of instruments, which gives J.S. & The Lockerbillies an incredibly unique edge to them.

The big news for J.S. & The Lockerbillies, is that this year they will be performing at Glastonbury!

When Josh is not performing he spends his time teaching guitar, bass, singing or musical theory to students aged between six and seventy years old. He also writes music and has written an album called ‘Lazy Eye Satellite’ with Murray and his friend Ashley Paul.

If you’re thinking of having live music at an event, Josh and his band are highly recommended. They are simply talent personified and when those tunes start jamming, your feet, hips and arms will want to too! Well done lads! We love ya!

Fiction highlights include appearances Rose Tremain who will be interviewed by festival favourite Nicola Upson; Deborah Moggach whose novel ‘These Foolish Things’ was made into the hit movie ‘The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel’; Nicci French the leading psychological crime thriller writer and Hugh Fraser (Capt Hastings to David Suchet’s Poirot) who joins us to talk about his first crime novel.
For lovers of history Alison Weir’s novels offer new insights into the real lives of Henry VIII’s six queens. We have a panel discussing the fascinating subject of translation. How do authors and translators work together? What are the ethics of translation? How close to the original should a translation be?
The subject of translation comes

up again in our session about Polish Noir. Top-selling Polish novelist Katarzyna Bonda joins Antonia Lloyd-Jones to tell British author Sarah Bower what is different about murder Polish style. The international theme continues with publishing legend Liz
Calder talking about Brazilian Literature.
On the evening of Saturday 25th, author Ed Nicholls leads us, by candlelight, on a journey from some of the oldest working
Victorian theatres in the country, to the gruesome hauntings of Britain’s pubs. Children will have an exciting time, too. Six school book groups
are reading Boy in the Tower by Polly Ho Yen. A representative
from each group will form an interview panel at the festival. We also have children’s picture book author and illustrator Rebecca Elliott, 2015 Carnegie medal winner Tanya Landman; comic book master classes and a Roald Dahl event, plus an interactive session for the whole family celebrating one of the nation’s favourite children’s authors and meeting some of his famous characters. Local News In preparation for the Felixstowe Carnival 2016, here’s Steve Porter with some information...

In Felixstowe it Never Rains Two Years in a Row - Or So We Hope! Back on the seafront again, this year’s Felixstowe Carnival promises to be better than ever. Throughout the weekend of Saturday 23rd July and Sunday 24th July we have a great line-up of bands and entertainers. Fifty years ago, whilst England were winning the World Cup, the Beatles were at their peak. In celebration, we are delighted to offer you ‘Like the Beatles’, one of the finest tribute bands in the country and who have performed at Cheltenham Race course and The Goodwood Revival Festival. Also with a 60’s theme we have ‘The Start’ from Canvey Island. They are a top quality Mod and Ska band who will be playing plenty of well-known dance favourites. So get down to the main stage opposite the Felsto Arms and enjoy these and our other fantastic bands and special guests in the sunshine. It is not just music. We have a full entertainment schedule for all ages and a further performance area opposite

Please mention

the Marlborough Hotel. A big highlight will be ‘Chrisalis Clowning’ for the children, one of the few female clowns in the country. Details of all the entertainment can be found in the carnival programme, which is excellent value at just £1. Then of course there is the Rio Carnival themed procession. This great fund-raising cavalcade will be making its way from Beatrice Avenue down to the seafront starting at 1pm on Saturday. Come and enjoy the procession entrants, floats, dancers and music.

The really good news is that, thanks to our sponsors, fundraisers and the generosity of last year’s carnival-goers, all of this is free. So please come down, have a great time and help us fill the collection buckets once again.

An extraordinary local gentleman who has dedicated years to creating exquisite model planes...

Derek Freeman

Seventy-four year old, Derek Freeman, moved to Felixstowe on his birthday, on May 8th 1945. His fascination with plane modelling began when he was just six years old when he made his first model plane with a piece of kindling wood and a pen knife.

Over the years, Derek has made more than two-thousand models, four-hundred of which are WW2 aircraft.

Together with his wife, Derek sold craft items (including handmade, wooden dolls’ houses, trains and toys) in a shop at the bottom of Bent Hill. At that time, Derek built a Noah Ark for a gentleman in America and a B17 aircraft which the customer’s father piloted. It was made out of solid mahogany with brass inlay and brass propellers. We got to see a similar model. ‘Stunning’ doesn’t cut it for an adequate description! (see image second above). Someone from the craft shop heard about these models and gave Derek photos to work from to make more. Derek ended up making seventy of them! Later, he found out about the Felixstowe Air Station and a list of all the aircraft that came through Felixstowe. From this list, Derek began to make a collection to include all the flying boats and sea planes that entered the town.

Derek has sold hundreds of his models, but now at home where his workshop is, he is working on a private collection which he hopes to complete: a total of three-hundred planes specifically tested in Felixstowe’s dock area. Since Derek’s beloved wife passed away four years ago, making these models has kept him busy and out of trouble,

and in a profoundly philisophical statement, Derek says, “I really enjoy it as it’s a challenge to make something out of nothing.”

Incredibly, Derek’s models are mainly made from old door frames, window frames, scrap timber, bits of wire, recycled plastic, drain pipes, bristles from a broom; everthing is recycled. Some models take a month, some three months, depending on the size and complexity. Each model is made based on photos of planes and drawings, and so, the ability to replicate the details depends entirely on the quality of the photos used. Every model is proportioned from six feet to the inch so you can have a good idea of the comparative size of each plane in real life. Seeing these in the flesh is remarkable! Though some sea-planes and aircraft that were tested at the Felixstowe Air Station were made in America, most were UK built. Felixstowe even built it’s very own series of planes; the Felixstowe F1-F5!

Derek is an incredibly gifted man and is happy to show his planes to anyone who is interested to see them or learn the craft. To get in touch call Derek on 210778. We highly recommend a visit!
