Local Support Introducing Support and Advice Project in Suffolk…

Michelle’s Story

SNAP provide a housing related support service to people living in Suffolk (excluding Waveney). Their service is tailored to meet the individual needs for those who are homeless, at risk of homelessness or have difficulty managing their accommodation. It is confidential and is free to anybody over the age of 16 who has access to public funding.

Housing related support include developing life skills, accessing education, employment or training, how to maximise your income, benefits, budgeting and debt advice. To show you just how needed this charity is, we met with local lady, Michelle, who told us her story of how much SNAP has helped her with her recent situation.

“I was desperately in need of help when my family and I were threatened with eviction. I hadn’t worked for the last 16 years, since I was in my 30’s, as I was a full-time carer for my mother who had terminal cancer, heavy depression and severe OCD. With all savings and personal funds poured into health care for mum, we were in arrears on our rent and were being summoned to go to court. We also had to pay court fees. Things took a horrible turn and I was in a position where I had to give up my home, put mum into a local hospice and move into temporary accomodation in Yarmouth with my 15 year old son. The idea of losing our home where three generations of my family lived, and separating the family at such a time when mum was on her last days was devastating. Ten years ago, my father died of cancer. A few years ago my partner and I parted and if it wasn’t for my son, I don’t believe I would be here today.

The pressure put me close to apathy and so my friend contacted social services who put me in touch with SNAP.

I had an initial assessment with Sue from SNAP. She was like a breath of fresh air. I finally felt I might get somewhere with things. She had such a lovely way about her and said she would give it the very best try to help us.

Sue took at all my paper work she needed. She booked an appointment with the Citizen’s Advice Bureau to look into the benefits I should have gotten as a full-time carer.

Mum should have been on PIP (Personal Independence Payment) from three months into being diagnosed (a total of 2 years), but we only got that a few weeks before she passed away. The cancer nurse was supposed to tell us but we didn’t meet her until about four weeks before mum passed away so we just had no idea. Sue managed to push that through quickly due to mum being terminally ill and once the PIP was through I was able to get carer’s allowance.

SNAP to exist you have to do your part too, but they have a way of pointing you in the right direction and they’ll tell you like it is. Sue is a wonderful woman as she’ll be there for you but you have to work with the charity - show you’re going to help yourself and do your bit. God knows where we’ll be if we didn’t have SNAP. Our family would be all over the place and mum would have passed away alone in a hospice with no one she knew.

Things are still emotional now with the loss of mum, but as a family, we’re in the best shape we’ve ever been because of how Sue has helped me handle finances better and how to prioritise and work things out on a practical level. Sue has turned my life around. Some people see psychiatrists but they don’t always understand. They look more at giving you medication rather than simply building confidence through learning life skills. I’m hoping to be able to get back into work in the future once I’ve regained my lost confidence. I’d like to do some voluntary work to give something back. The government and local councils should be ploughing money into these charities as they are brilliant at getting people the help they desperately need. BASIC were great as they gave us a new fridge to replace the one we had which was on its last legs. In turn, when mum passed I was able to give things to BASIC.

I feel more positive now and I would never have done an interview like this before. I’m so grateful to an organization like SNAP. They are lacking in funding, but they are so resourceful and helpful. I can’t express to people how wonderful SNAP have been. I want to put it across to people to not get into these awful situations. Don’t bury your head in the sand and think it’ll go away. Go and find these amazing charities, like SNAP and BASIC and get the expert support you need.” To find out more about SNAP go to: www.snap-cara.org If you need help contact CARA (the Central Access and Referral Agency) who can put you in touch with SNAP on 01473 467727

Having this extra financial support would have meant that I would never gotten into arrears on rent, which led to the eviction and the need to pay court fees.

Being on benefit you get a lot of stick and there are a lot of people out there that try to get things that they are not entitled to, but when you are one of those people that genuinely need help, you can feel really isolated and you don’t know who to turn to sometimes. For such a charity as

7 Random ramblings by the lovely Dean Wales...

Viva Las Vague-us

They say whatever happens in Vegas stays in Vegas. Not that I have anything I wish to abandon there of course, except perhaps memories of waiting an hour for the Bellagio fountain show at 3am, a little worse for wear.

Not quite registering that my colleague (also a little merry) and I were the only living beings standing by the vast stretch of ornamental railing, eagerly awaiting the not-to-be-missed water extravaganza, a kind cockney chap, dripping in gold (I’m certain I spied a sovereign ring) happened upon us as he sauntered past and bantered: “They’ve finished boys….they turned them off five hours (or was it ares) ago.” I have to tell you that Vegas isn’t a city of choice for me but the day job demands I work there from time to time. Although I won’t knock anybody that chooses the original ‘Sin City’ as a holiday destination, you understand.

But however well they ‘do it’ over there, I just don’t get it, and after all these years I still can’t always fathom out some of the people. I can just about comprehend a hamburger restaurant boasting they sell a 9,999 calorie burger stack but the monster-sized scales as you walk through the door of the establishment which are placed there to ascertain whether or not you qualify to eat for free is quite frankly beyond me!

On my recent trip, the unexpected questions I was often asked left me bemused too. The subject of personal protection was raised and when I proudly announced that in the UK there was a ban on firearms, a rather flummoxed gentleman from North Dakota enquired how then do we protect ourselves in Great Britain. I asked: “Protect ourselves from what exactly?” “Why, the wildlife of course”, was the retort. I had to point out that the most perilous wildlife in the UK was possibly a hungry seagull who had spotted that you are carrying a bag of chips and I think us Brits would survive that without pulling out a Glock! But the final straw was when a nice Texan spotted my name badge and said: “Hey your last name is Wales…. that’s neat……Wales yeah? That’s actually a place in London right?”

What could I say after a week of this but “Yes sir…..yes it is…boy you know our country well.”

To which he replied: “Of course, I love the United States of England and your Queen Elizabeth…she’s Victoria’s sister right?”……oh good grief!

Felixstowe’s Cultural Food Corner Cut-Outs Celebrating Felixstowe’s many cultural delights with what we love best...food!

The Perfect Wimledon Scones

Make a well in the dry mix, then add the liquid and combine it quickly with a cutlery knife – it will seem pretty wet at first. Scatter some flour onto the work surface and tip the dough out. Dredge the dough and your hands with a little more flour, then fold the dough over 2-3 times until it’s a little smoother. Pat into a round about 4cm deep.

Ingrdients 350g self-raising flour, plus more for dusting ¼ tsp salt 1 tsp baking powder 85g butter, cut into cubes 3 tbsp caster sugar 175ml milk 1 tsp vanilla extract Squeeze lemon juice and beaten egg, to glaze Jam and clotted cream, to serve. Method

Heat oven to 220C/fan 200C/gas 7. Tip the flour into a large bowl with the salt and baking powder, then mix. Add the butter, then rub in with your fingers until the mix looks like fine crumbs. Stir in the sugar. Put the milk into a jug and heat in the microwave for about 30 seconds until warm, but not hot. Add the vanilla and lemon juice, then set aside for a moment. Put a baking sheet in the oven.

Take a 5cm cutter (smooth-edged cutters tend to cut more cleanly, giving a better rise) and dip it into some flour. Plunge into the dough, then repeat until you have four scones. By this point you’ll probably need to press what’s left of the dough back into a round to cut out another four. Brush the tops with beaten egg, then carefully place onto the hot baking tray.

Bake for 10 mins until risen and golden on the top. Eat just warm or cold on the day of baking, generously topped with jam and clotted cream. If freezing, freeze once cool. Defrost, then put in a low oven (about 160C/fan140C/gas 3) for a few mins to refresh. Mmmmm.... enjoy!

Local Charity & Their News

BASIC Life Charity

From the initial idea in 1997, through our acceptance as a registered Charitable Trust in 2000, Felixstowe based BASIC, an independant Charitable Trust, has been able to assist many groups, organisations and individuals with financial, practical and general support. We are a ‘people’ charity and believe our mission is to support those in need and to provide assistance for those who are otherwise prevented from realising their own charitable goals. June has finally arrived and hopefully the sun will be making lots of appearances during the month!

For us at BASIC it’s going to be another busy month culminating with a great new event to support us from Café on the Corner!

Cafe on the Corner Afternoon Tea

On 29th June from 4:30pm until 6pm, Jane and her staff will be providing a full afternoon tea including scones, cakes, sandwiches and savoury bites and as much tea or coffee as you can drink! As it’s the first day of Wimbledon it seems likely there will also be strawberries provided - all for £10 a ticket! A great way to start the real summer with your friends! Tickets are available from both BASIC shops and from Café on the Corner.

June is also the month where we swap the spring items we sell for more seasonal ones. So out go the jumpers and in come the flip-flops, buckets, spades and outdoor games. Be sure to pop in to either of our shops to find a genuine bargain while helping your community at the same time.

We hope you will give them a try and save yourself some money!

During May we were delighted to be able to assist some local families by passing on food from our food bank, providing financial assistance towards school trips and uniforms and paying an emergency fuel bill for a local resident. If you are in need of assistance please contact Citizens Advice, Social Services or your housing association – if they refer you to us we may be able to help you.

We are always astounded by the generosity of Felixstowe, Walton, Trimley and Kirton people and we feel it’s such an honour to be able to be able to pass on the profits to those in need locally. To those who donate to us – a massive ‘thank you!’

We live in such a fantastic, town and we’re sure the summer will provide a chance to enjoy the weather, make new friends and continue to build an even stronger sense of community. BASIC Charity Shop, Walton: 312 High Street Walton 01394 279400

BASIC Charity Shop, Felixstowe: 17 Hamilton Road Felixstowe We’ll also be having another of our very popular ‘everything IP11 7AX half-price’ sale days – so watch our shop windows for details. 01394 272618 This month is also the launch of our partnership with ‘The www.basic.org.uk People’s Operator’ who provide incredibly low mobile phone rates and give 10% of their revenue to charity. Mystery Shopper Reviewing the latest and greatest of Felixstowe, here’s our Mystery Shopper to bring you her take on the best of our town...

Sam Moi Oriental Restaurant

Like 007, The Mystery Shopper always runs the risk of having their cover blown. Only a very few people know about my alter-ego, my son, however, was not one of them.

When we were sitting in the Sam Moi, my husband suggested doing a ‘review’, my son asked a lot questions in his best stage whisper. We had the ‘eat all you want’ menu’, which was an especial treat; I love ‘little bits’ and sharing with my friends. The selection of starters, including satay, prawn toast and pork balls arrived promptly. This is an ‘Oriental’ restaurant, so although influenced by Chinese cuisine, it had a little bit of everything. There was a lovely Thai salad served with the starters, which was spicy and refreshing and I could have quite happily ordered another one. It was really nice that there were enough ‘pancakes’ to use up all the duck generously – no fisticuffs required. We could have had a soup course as well, but having learned the lessons at The Regal, we were sensible (and I don’t think my son figured it out). Because the main course dishes are relatively small, you can try different things and meant that my son and I could enjoy the chicken red curry, whilst my husband could have prawns to his heart’s content and we still had room to share lemon chicken. A word to the wise, make sure that you stipulate you would like a rice

We had a good night and a lively discussion on the enchantment of a wall covered in green turf (my son wants wall-to-wall Astroturf in his bedroom). We also discussed the difference in ‘fat’ Buddha, versus Buddha ‘with integrity’. I am happy to report that, according to my sixteen year old, Sam Moi’s Buddha has a high level of integrity and long may they have good custom at their new restaurant! We know we shouldn’t have favourites, but this awesome little dog comes VERY close...

Make Aggy Waggy

“My name is Aggy. I’m a Lhasa Apso dog. My life suddenly changed this year. Until February I was living with my best friend in the world called Diane Fedida. I know she wasn’t well because she went to hospital a lot and was often sad. I tried to make her feel better.

One day I moved to a different house with different people. I was sad and my tail was down. I saw Diane one more time: she was in St Elizabeth Hospice. I was allowed onto her bed. I was so happy to see her again. She stroked me and said ‘Goodbye’…she meant goodbye for ever. I miss her.”

Diane was well known in Felixstowe as a musician and violin teacher – many children and some adults were lucky enough to take their first steps in creating music with Diane. A few years ago she was diagnosed with breast cancer which spread to her bones last year. She knew her cancer was terminal; she had to give up teaching and spent a lot of her time at home with Aggy who brought her such joy in her last days. Cancer is devastating – not only for the person but for those around them (including their pets.) More than 1 in 3 people in the UK will develop it. Cancer Research does groundbreaking work into prevention, diagnosis and treatment. Money is needed to make these advances.

So, Aggy is fund-raising and raising awareness for Cancer

On 8th May Aggy went national! Her video & story went on Cancer Research UK Facebook page. She will also be ’The Star Guest with a Tail’ at the Ipswich Race for Life on June 14th; so even with her little legs she’s making great strides. What’s more that tail is up and wagging again, showing there is life and hope for those left grieving after such a loss and for those getting that dreaded diagnosis. Aggy wants to thank everyone who has already helped her – but she’s not finished yet, so come on everybody, Make Aggy Waggy - WOOF!

Local Event Now in its third year, the Felixstowe Book Festival returns to our town for an entertaining weekend of fiction, non-fiction, poetry and writing events.

The Felixstowe Book Festival Thanks to the support of the Arts Council, on June 27th and 28th there is something for everyone - from author talks to writing workshops, vintage tea parties to candle-lit tales of haunted theatres and children’s storytelling to crime fiction. Our 2015 line up has over 40 speakers including Esther Freud, Erica James, Adele Parks and Terry Waite. There are many authors that will be at the festival to talk to the public, one of them is Jeanette Hewitt.

Jeanette has published two novels independently, Freedom First Peace Later, in 2010, which is based in Northern Ireland and chronicles what life was like at the height of the ‘troubles’ in the eighties. Worlds Apart was published in 2013. “This novel examines the theory of fate and what part it plays in life, hence the tag-line; there is no fate, except what we make. And if anyone can tell me the film that I stole that from, well, hats off to them!” Jeanette has worked with Harper Collins’ website Authonomy and The Front List and has also written for online fashion magazine, Offers Boutique, and literary magazines, The Jimston Journal and Spike.

“The only short story I’ve ever written won an award in the author vs. author competition, supported by the National Literary Trust in 2008. The short story is titled Ellen’s Journey and is loosely based on the day that my Grandmother passed away. In July 2012 I was shortlisted as a finalist in the Marie Claire Inspire and Mentor Award, chosen by Jojo Moyes.”

in England. Jeanette is currently researching the Chernobyl disaster in 1986 as the back drop for her next book and after that she will be writing a novel based around the Nanking Massacre that occurred in 1937. The death toll was around 300,000, but because the Japanese military records were destroyed and the events disputed, it does not seem to be as well-known as other historical acts of genocide.

“Last year I volunteered at the Felixstowe Book Festival and I shall be there again in June, where I will be with authors Jane Isaac and SJ Holliday to discuss our work, our journeys and our inspirations with the public.” If you are new to book festival events, the Felixstowe Book Festival has been described as: “One of the friendliest and most welcoming to both readers and authors.”

If you are a seasoned book festival-goer you will find plenty to stimulate and engage you in our interesting and diverse program. You can pick up a programme from county libraries, book shops etc. Visit our website where you can book and find more details about all events and speakers: www.felixstowebookfestival.co.uk.

You can also book via 01473 295900 (New Wolsey Theatre) or in person at Stillwater Books, 36 Hamilton Rd, Felixstowe, IP117AN. Twitter: @felixstowebook Facebook: www.facebook.com/FelixstoweBookFest

Jeanette’s novels are mostly of the Historical Fiction genre set in the 20th Century. She has just completed a manuscript, The Intelligence of Ravens, a book chronicling the life of a Polish Jewish girl and the four years she spent in Ravensbrook Concentration Camp and her life post-war

Local Law More news from Jackamans’ budding Solicitor...

A Day in the Life of a Trainee Solicitor

I am now coming to the end of my time in the conveyancing department and, whilst I’m looking forward to my next seat, I must admit that I will miss my current team and the clients I have met along the way. For my final conveyancing update, I thought I would cover a topic which is fundamental to conveyancing but is often misconstrued by those unfamiliar with the process.

As our existing conveyancing clients will no doubt be aware, one of the first things that we need to obtain is evidence of our client’s identity and verification of their address. For some, this may sound like an odd request: after all, there is nothing suspicious about wanting to buy a house. This is however a requirement of the Money Laundering Regulations which all law firms have to abide by, and our efforts to ensure compliance should in no way be interpreted as Jackamans not trusting clients!

In short, when acting for and handling sums of money on behalf of our clients, we have to be certain of that client’s identity and that the source of his/her funds is legitimate. This aims to prevent the proceeds of criminal activity being

‘laundered’ by the firm. Importantly, anyone who should be acting in compliance with the Regulations but does not comply, may face a fine or even imprisonment, something which none of us wants to risk. I hope that this clarifies just how important this simple step is in preventing a very serious problem, and why we must insist on the correct procedure being followed. I’m sure that this will remain just as important as I move into the commercial department and, as always, I’ll keep you updated on my progress.

This article provides only a general summary and is not intended to be comprehensive. Special legal advice should be taken in any individual situation. For further information do contact our conveyancing department on 01394 279636.
