Book Release Interview with one of Suffolk’s finest authors on his new book…

A View of Felixstowe from the Bath By Dick Moffat - £16.00

“Following the chance finding of a nineteenth century visitors’ book for The Bath Hotel, this potted history unearths the fascinating story of Felixstowe’s first and foremost luxury hotel. Beginning in the 1840s, and the brainchild of one of the Cobbold family, it ends in 1914, being completely destroyed by a fire started by two suffragettes, just before the outbreak of the war.”

What inspired you to write this book?

Well, isn’t it ironic that we celebrate the suffragettes burning down the finest hotel at the time, and one of the most iconic buildings in Suffolk, but we don’t celebrate The Bath Hotel as such. It was one of the earliest prestigious hotels in the country, certainly in terms of the seaside; people would travel from all over to either holiday or convalesce. The two suffragettes, prior to burning down the hotel, had caused a string of incidents while travelling down the coast from Lowestoft, including the pier in Southwold, so it’s likely the pier in Felixstowe was their target, but with security being tight they obviously chose the next most important structure in the town. According to visitors’ books for both The Bath Hotel and The Cliff Hotel, the former, up until 1907, was managed by George Quilter and his daughter. Following an alterca-

tion with Lord Tollemach, the then owner, Quilter built and moved to what was referred to as Quilter’s Cliff Hotel, now Cliff House. Many of the original guests appear to have moved with him, again according to the visitors’ book, this time for The Cliff Hotel.

The Bath Hotel Book is packed with the names of the great and good, and many chose to include watercolours, pen and ink drawings, poetry etc. It is also possible to trace the origins of the golf club, the cricket club and the tennis club through various entries.

Where can we buy your book and where will we see you next?

You can purchase the book from Poor Richard’s Book Shop, 17 Orwell Road. It will also be availabe at the Felixstowe Book Festival. I’ll also be talking at the library for the Felixstowe Book Festival. www.felixstowebookfestival.co.uk

7 More news from Fiona Sturgeon at Jackamans Solicitors...

A Day in the Life of a Paralegal This month, as always, we’ve seen a wide range of clients through our doors. I thought I’d share one case in particular with you as I imagine there are many people out there in a similar situation and with very similar concerns. In a society where complex family structures and second marriages are common, juggling the needs and expectations of different factions can be a minefield when it comes to deciding who you would like to benefit when you pass on. I know of many clients, friends and family who have very specific wishes, often wanting assets to ultimately pass to their own children, but also to keep their new partners in the manner to which they have become accustomed, in the family home. Unfortunately, however, simply communicating these wishes to the family is unlikely to be enough for them to take effect. What’s more, if these wishes clash with how your estate is actually distributed should you not leave a will, there is a risk that the ‘competing’

parties may take the matter into their own hands. The most important thing that I have taken from my training so far is simple: the only way to ensure that your estate passes in the way you want it to is to make a will. The thought of an unmarried cohabiting partner losing his or her home, or children losing out despite knowing that their parent wanted something different is a terrible and clearly to be avoided, particularly when the solution is so straightforward. Do visit our Felixstowe office at 167/171 Hamilton Road if you would like our assistance on any private client matters. Local Charity & Their News

Basic Life, C

From the initial idea in 1997, through o Charitable Trust, have been able to ass ‘people’ charity and believe our missio realising their own charitable goals.

As summer arrives we inevitably think of holidays and a break from work. Many people will be jetting off to far-flung destinations to enjoy a couple of weeks in the sun and to explore different cultures. But for many Felixstowe is the perfect holiday destination! It seems more and more people are enjoying staycations in our beautiful town. Not only is it a lot cheaper and stress-free to stay home, but our town offers so much. BASIC have found out about the attraction of Felixstowe as a holiday resort over the past couple of years. We arranged for some children from London’s innercity to come and stay at Felixstowe for a long weekend in 2013. Four families came over different weekends and had a fantastic break from the normal day-to-day problems they face. We also arranged accommodation for a family of four where the mother was suffering from a terminal disease. We know the whole family were enthralled by our town and the stunning sea views. Of course many local residents cannot afford a break at all and that is why BASIC have teamed up with The Family Holiday Association (http://www.familyholidayassociation.org.uk/) who provide holidays for people on low income. If you are in the situation where you are unable to pay for a break, why not contact then and see if you qualify to have a great, free holiday?

our acceptance as a registered Charitable Trust in 2000, Felixstowe based BASIC, an independant sist many groups, organisations and individuals with financial, practical and general support. We are a on is to support those in need and to provide assistance for those who are otherwise prevented from

starting in September and we like to get a little bit ahead of ourselves here at BASIC! We are looking for old school uniforms – so if your child has grown quicker that Jack’s beanstalk and the blazer and jumper no longer fit, please bring them along to either of our shops. We’re going to collect them and then have them out for sale just before the new school year begins. We hear a constant theme from our customers about how difficult it is to buy new uniforms locally. Of course bargains can be found in supermarkets for shirts and trousers – but we are looking for the branded jumpers and blazers with ‘Fairfield’, ‘Causton’ etc. Even if they are worn please send them along as we also make money for clothing for recycling. Let’s work together to make life a lot easier for all in our beautiful town.

News!

BASIC are currently working on other projects including the St. Edmund’s Church and a brand new initiative called F.I.T. – details next time!

Felixstowe Air Cadets Surpass Expectations! 8 Cadets from 356 (Felixstowe) Squadron took part in this year’s Wing Field Competition, hosted at East Wretham Camp in Norfolk, and were awarded the Runners Up prize for their hard work and team spirit. Competing against the 28 other Squadrons from the Norfolk and Suffolk Wing the team did exceptionally well, being placed in 2nd in 5 of the 10 events. Obtaining 248 of the 290 points on offer they were beaten into 2nd place by friendly rivals and closest friends from 432 Woodbridge Squadron. Congratulations go to Woodbridge for a sterling performance by winning 5 of the 10 events and obtaining a score of 268. 188 Ipswich Squadron, another member of the ‘Peninsular Squadrons’, obtained their best result to date, coming 4th overall. For the top two teams, the result from this year’s competition is a role reversal from last year.

OC 356 Squadron – Flt Lt Andrew Garrett said, “All the hard work has been done by the team. It was a very good result and I can be very proud of effort they put in. Well done team. I would also like to offer thanks to the other cadets on the Squadron who helped with the preparation of the team.”

Local Business

Peewit Caravan Park Peewit Caravan Park was officially launched in 1965 on land off Walton Avenue that had previously been farmed by the Smith family. Mr Hake had already started a campsite at Felixstowe Beach beside the railway station and it was apparent that there was scope for a second caravan park in Felixstowe. Only touring caravans and tents were accommodated then. The business was run as a partnership between Mr & Mrs Geoffrey & Rachel Smith and Mr Michael Ward until the mid 1980s when Mr Ward was bought out. Mr & Mrs Smith combined running Peewit Caravans Ltd with farming at Goslings Farm, Trimley St Martin. The day to day running of the Park was undertaken by a succession of managers. In 2000 when Geoff sadly passed away, his son Andrew and daughter in law Liz took over the business with Rachel Smith, who very sadly passed away last year. It seems amazing now, looking back, at how caravans have changed! The fully fitted out holiday homes of today lead you to forget that back in the 60s everyone was reliant on the toilet and shower blocks provided by the site. Water was drawn from a standpipe serving a group of caravans and hot water would have been heated in a pan on a small cooking hob – much like a beach hut. Some of the owners of the caravans would have arrived for their holidays by train or bus – now

everyone seems to have at least one car. The touring caravans kept growing until they became the static caravans we know now as holiday homes. Peewit has always tried to have a sense of community. There isn’t a clubhouse, but there is occasionally a social night with perhaps a quiz. They enter a float into the Carnival every year and have about 50 customers involved, ranging in age from 5 to 75 years. Felixstowe in Flower is another town initiative which Peewit supports, as do several green-fingered caravan owners individually. Tucked away from the hustle and bustle, Felixstowe’s hidden gem reflects the quiet location down the long driveway between Felixstowe Beach Caravan Park and the Jehovah’s Witness Kingdom Hall; yet by accessing the rear pedestrian exit, you can walk to the town centre in less than 20 minutes. Next year Peewit Caravan Park will be celebrating 50 years of business – and looking forward to the next 50.

Touring & Caravan Holiday Homes A family owned site in Felixstowe since 1965. Also 2 x Double Glazed & Centrally Heated Quality Caravans to hire from Saturday to Saturday if your family or friends want to come and visit you!
