Welcome to August... Finally, the summer holidays have arrived!! You may have certain things you do every summer and places you go - for me, it’s picking up my nephews from Northampton and taking them to do their favourite things in Felixstowe - swimming at the Leisure Centre, ice cream on the beach followed by mini-golf and a trip to our Palace Cinema (with cheesy chips and sausage butties of course)! I have no idea where they get their energy from... maybe it’s our sea air!

Commemorating Radio Caroline Commemoratina 1964 saw the start of commercial radio in the UK, as Radio Caroline began broadcasting, anchored off the coast here at Felixstowe. Our ‘Felixstowe and Offshore Radio’ group was set up in 2014 with a view to celebrating the connections between the town and offshore radio and we were invited by Phil Hadwen to take part in the Heritage Weekend, which saw us put on an exhibition at the ‘Fish Dish’ restaurant, while the ‘Flashback 67’ exhibition was located in Cotman Hall. From that weekend, came the idea of having a stone laid in the town as a permanent commemoration of the start of Radio Caroline. The design and location was agreed with the Felixstowe Society, and the stone completed by the East of England Co-op Society, and licensed by SCDC. This will now be unveiled at 5.30pm on Saturday September 9th, at the Wolsey Gardens viewing area, directly above the Town Hall Gardens. In conjunction with this there will also be an event held over the weekend in Trinity Methodist Church Hall (on the corner of Orwell Road and Hamilton Road), where we will be joined again by offshore radio guests including Alan Turner (who worked on board the MV Caroline whilst she was off Felixstowe) and Ray Clark from Caroline and BBC Essex (and author of ‘Radio Caroline, The True Story of the Boat that Rocked’).

“A permanent stone laid to commemorate the beginnings of our much-loved pirate radio station” The ‘Flashback 67’ exhibition will be back, along with our display of Felixstowe related material, a display of vintage radios and technology, Radio Caroline and offshore radio merchandise, and a Record and CD Fair on the Saturday, when we will be open from 9am to 5pm. On the Sunday, we will be open between 10am to 4pm. Entrance is FREE! By coincidence, it has recently been announced that Radio Caroline has been awarded a medium wave licence to broadcast to Suffolk and north Essex on 648kHz medium wave (the old BBC World Service frequency), and some of the output will come from the Ross Revenge, moored in the River Blackwater. Further updates will be published on our Felixstowe and Offshore Radio Facebook page. For any further info, please contact Brian Nichols on 07714 596655. We look forward to meeting you over the weekend of September 9th and 10th.

Camouflaged Factory Buildings, 1939-1941 Leamington Spa Art Gallery & Museum

Colin Moss A talent for concealment Felixstowe schoolboy, Josh Cole, knew there was something special about his artist grandfather, Colin Moss – but what first brought it home to him was an exhibition called ‘Camouflage’ at the Imperial War Museum in 2007. He saw the exhibition when he was just seven years old – two years after Colin’s death. And there he learned just what Colin, as an artist, had contributed to the defence of his country during World War 2. The exhibition covered the whole history of camouflage. But when Josh found the section dealing with the Second World War he was astonished. Because it included paintings of his grandfather’s camouflage schemes, designed to conceal civilian installations – anything from power station cooling towers to whole factories. An artist at war

Colin’s involvement began soon after the government set up a Directorate of Camouflage as part of the Ministry of Home Security in 1939, with its main base in Royal Leamington Spa. By then camouflage was, quite literally, as much a science as an art. The work of the Camouflage Workshop depended on close collaboration between scientific specialists and some 80 artists. When the threat from the Luftwaffe was over, the Camoufleurs were given a month’s leave to produce watercolour paintings of the schemes they had designed. A second exhibition Then, in 2015, the family were contacted by Leamington Spa Art Gallery. They were staging an exhibition called ‘Concealment & Deception: The Art of the Camoufleurs of Leamington Spa, 1939-1945’. Once again this put Colin’s work firmly in the spotlight, and encouraged Josh to learn even more about his grandfather. His first project was a Facebook page, (facebook.com/ ColinMoss.WW2Camoufleur) where Josh researched and posted about the history of the Camoufleurs and his grandfather’s work. A website covering Colin’s work up to his death in 2005 soon followed (ColinMoss.info). Colin Moss in Ipswich

The Arboretum Bar Ipswich, 1950 © The Estate of Colin Moss

After the war Colin took up a teaching post at the Ipswich School of Art, where his pupils included Brian Eno and Maggi Hambling. His later work includes many candid pictures of ordinary people in the places he knew around Ipswich, like the snack bar where he often had breakfast, and his favourite pub, the Arboretum, just down the road from the art school. So this summer Josh has a new project. He’s checking out the places in and around Ipswich that his grandfather chose to paint. When he finds them he’s taking photographs, showing them as they are now and posting his images alongside Colin’s paintings from the same locations. To see what Josh is doing just visit www.colinmoss.info/blog.

‘Pink’ coleslaw “Celebrating Felixstowe’s many cultural delights with what we love best... food!”

As it is well and truly barbecue season this makes a perfect accompaniment to any burger or hot dog, but even if the weather doesn’t hold out this works perfectly with pork, chicken or as a vegetarian side dish. Ingredients 100g natural yoghurt ½ lemon (juice only) 1 tbsp grainy mustard 1 tbsp balsamic (or apple cider) vinegar 3 tbsp roughly chopped mint ¼ white cabbage, finely shredded ¼ red cabbage, finely shredded ¼ red onion, thinly sliced 2 carrots, peeled then peeled into ribbons ¼ beetroot, thinly sliced sea salt and freshly ground black pepper Method Place the yoghurt, lemon juice, mustard, vinegar and herbs into a large bowl and whisk well to combine, saving a pinch of herbs for garnish. Season with salt and black pepper to taste. Add the cabbages, red onion and carrots, and lastly beetroot and mix really well until coated in the mustard mixture. Ideally, leave to soften and absorb the flavours for at least 30 minutes before eating. Sprinkle the remainder of the herbs over the top before serving. Finally... enjoy!

Felixstowe town and around Will you forgive me if I start off this month’s article with a moan? Am I the only person who gets really annoyed when shopping in the supermarket – in my case usually Lidl – when you find other people’s unwanted shopping items dumped indiscriminately? I find myself picking up food items that have been abandoned amongst the leisure goods and wandering around the store returning them to their rightful place. Sad, maybe, but why are shoppers so lazy that they can’t be bothered to go back to where they picked up the stuff in the first place and return it there! The latest thing I dealt with at the weekend was a pack of fresh salmon left amongst the cosmetic items near the check out! When I handed it to the checkout operator she said it would have to be thrown away as there was no telling how long it had been out of the chiller! A waste of food and money and I was left with smelly fingers from picking it up! Moan over! I hope some of you were able to enjoy Armed Forces Day on the 24th June. It was a great event with something for everyone and the air display in the afternoon was thrilling. The many volunteers and organisers who helped to put on the event deserve all the praise that was forthcoming after the event. Darrell’s Day on the 25th was equally successful and the battles between the Dutch and English re-enactors were exciting and realistic. The month of July promises to have some great events to entertain residents and visitors to the resort. Carnival on the 22nd and 23rd followed by the first Open-Air Cinema event on the beachside events area on the 29th July. This is a free event with suitable films for children being shown in the morning, young people in the afternoon and adults in the evening.

“Update from our local town councillor” Felixstowe Youth Forum which is hosted and funded by the Town Council asked the members of the Forum how they wished to spend their £2000 annual budget and they agreed to help fund the open air cinema event. Hopefully, if this proves to be popular it can become another regular calendar offering. The Pier project is nearing completion and Town Councillors have been invited for another visit later in July to see the completed building. When we visited early in June it was still very much a building site, so it will be wonderful to see it completed. Another great investment in the future of Felixstowe - hopefully, when the North Sea Hotel comes up for auction in July someone with vision will buy it and rid our seafront of the ancient eyesore that has been standing there for so many years. There is an existing planning permission on the building so fingers crossed for a sale. Cycling on the prom is now in its 9th month of a year-long trial. To date only 3 complaints have been received and Suffolk Coastal have issued a plea for people to cycle considerately during the summer months when there will be far more people using the prom. Enjoy the continuing sunshine! Doreen Savage

It’s Growina Growing Pains...innit? The teenager; I was one once. Although looking back I feel I was perhaps more of an observer than a participant… okay I was boring, I admit that. But what is it about them these days that make the illusive teenager appear to us conventional anthropoids located on the higher echelons of the evolutionary scale as some form of sub-species? I’m relieved to point out that I don’t possess one of these creatures myself by the way, but the regular mentoring I do in high schools exposes me to the odd gaggle of them from time-to-time. So where to begin? There’s the ludicrous language to begin with. Let’s start with the accent. Now please don’t misunderstand me, I adore the Jamaican accent but not when it comes out of the mouth of a 15-year-old lad from Kirton, who happens to be the latest addition to 25 generations of Kirtonians. He should say: ‘as roight’, not: ‘Stop chatting bull, is safe man. You lookin buff in dem low batties.’ And that leads me on adequately to the slang! I’m only just catching up with ‘bad’ and ‘sick’ being used to describe something generally pleasurable. I’ve just discovered ‘slept’ means to slap someone… really hard! And ‘No Chill’ is an irrational person. Now I’m afraid I’m going to be a ‘No Chill’ and scream: “WHY CAN’T YOU JUST SAY IRRATIONAL PERSON?!” Now can we discuss the smell? This is an odd one and is possibly more targeted at teenage

12

“Random ramblings by our local lad” boys, but I’ll accept it if you prove me wrong. How is it that a teenage lad can emanate the heady stench of ripe Limburger cheese from his feet one moment, then quite literally knock you over with a violent backdraft of Lynx Africa the next? And it’s not propelled just from the stagnant bog of an armpit; these lads have the matching fragrance in shower gel, hair mousse, moisturiser and athlete’s foot powder. Its pungent bouquet is hurled from every millimetre of their person! It’s positively migraine-inducing. And so on to the attire. Why would any person buy a pair of jeans with rips in them? And they’re so tight I’m sure they must have to roll them on (did your nan ever wear a roll-on corset?). At least the Primark trunk-brief-cladposterior, hanging-over-the-waist-band-ofa-nice-pair-of-slacks look seems to have disappeared. Finally, we can’t take it away from them that the average teenager has an acute aptitude when it comes to technology. They can sort your smartphone’s problems out in a flash, schedule recordings on your Sky box in a blink of an eye. So, please tell me, why is it they find it so damned challenging to replace the empty toilet roll?

BASIC Life Charity Books… books… books!

“A regular update from this brilliant local charity, providing financial, practical and general support”

At BASIC we really LOVE books of all kinds and recently we received a donation of several thousand, after a big sale at Felixstowe International College.

Fire Many people will have been aware of the fire at a Felixstowe caravan park during July. The caravan in question was completely gutted meaning the occupants were left with none of their belongings. We were happy to offer items from our shops free of charge to enable the men to get back on their feet and were delighted to donate bedding and other household goods when they came to visit us.

From vintage classics to modern paperbacks, we were delighted to process them at our depot. After sorting most came back to our shops at our unbeatable price of 40p for a paperback or 60p for a hardback irrespective of title or condition! The rest went off to our collectors or were listed on our Amazon account (currently well more than 1000 items!)

Future

We really do try to get as much revenue into the charity from all donated items and books, DVD’s and CD’s get the full treatment!

Once again, we’ve be thinking up new community ideas for our town and we’re working on a project which we think will be great for local people of all ages.

Thank you to Diana Barnard, St.John’s church members and all involved in the sale.

We’ll give you an update on our progress next month! Have a wonderful August!

Felixstowe Celebrates Saint Felix Happiness is innate, basic to and necessary for being a well-rounded human being and there are many levels of happiness we can tune into/ turn to for all round benefit. “Whoever is happy will make others happy too.” - Anne Frank Did you know that the Roman name Felix means ‘Happy’? So, it is Felixstowe’s ongoing privilege and joy through living up to its name to bring sweet healing relief to many, gentle relaxation or great fun, precious time to sort things through – re-focus, to fish until we dish, shop until we drop and... smile again. Living/ working here or gratefully carrying away that refreshing ‘something’, however, its golden touch has touched us, let us remember this year marks the 1,370th anniversary of the death of St Felix who if you didn’t know was Felix of Burgundy becoming Felix of Dunwich, the first Bishop of the East Angles credited with bringing Christianity to East Anglia... Yes, he would have arrived here much earlier but catching the 6.30 from Liverpool Street to Ipswich there were Vikings on the line ha ha hmm! Happiness is as essential to living as it is to dying, there is nothing like having lived a well lived life, though everyone makes mistakes of course and as a wise priest once said, “A man who hasn’t made a mistake, hasn’t made anything.” True... “Mistakes are stepping stones to wisdom.” So, death and happiness? They ought to be good buddies. As there is usually joy in birth, in a stable and deepening relationship, so there should be and is to the spiritually aware person real joy in the passing on to a further form of Infinite Life when the time has come to relinquish our well worn out machinery, the body. Or, if that is not meant to be, may I commend to you the beautiful poem by Ben Jonson ‘It is not growing like a tree,’ which really helps put matters that matter into soulful or larger perspective. Many of us thank goodness, truth and beauty are familiar with the wonderful piece of writing ‘Death is nothing at All’ by Henry Scott Holland, the original version being the best, then we have darting back in time to the 13th century the timeless words of the great Sufi

14

“How ‘Felixstowe’ represents the heart of happiness” poet Rumi, who said, “You have a deathless soul. Why on earth are you afraid of death? You possess the Light of God. How can you fit into a grave?” He likewise/lightwise guided people to the understanding that funerals should be a time of “rejoicing, thanks and dancing” which I agree with and sensitively endeavour to achieve at every service I take locally, be it at the excellent Seven Hills Crematorium, elsewhere or at burial services around the county/ country. Archbishop Desmond Tutu and the Dalai Lama of Tibet, two spiritual giants of our time, spent some time together and ‘The Book of Joy’ was written detailing their conversations and experiences. Again Desmond Tutu points to the importance of joy, laughter and jokes at funerals as a necessary part of bringing matters full circle, to a loving, harmonious, grateful & peaceful conclusion for everyone involved – everyone matters. Yes evolving all round healthier attitudes towards living and dying, let us remember the saying, “If there are to be tears, let them be tears of joy.” The Smile of the Spirit, truly a breath of fresh air – of Felixstowe, thanks St Felix. Speaking of whom, would anyone, business, club or individual like to sponsor a project ‘The Felixstowe Book of Happiness’ - A Celebration of the Community Spirit of Felixstowe’? A refreshing dip into a sparkling ocean of inspiration, of hilarious jokes, smiling photographs, classic quotes, poems, stories all about happiness to sell in aid of The Felixstowe Community Hospital. Please do get in touch if you can help in any way. Thank YOU - for what did those two happy chappies Morecombe and Wise wisely sing at the end of their show? “In this world where we live, there should be more happiness...” The Rt Revd Charles Mugleston 01394 285 669
