Natural & Social Science

unit WALKTHROUGH!

unit opening

■■

Levels 1 & 2

■■

The unit opens with a vibrant double page colour illustration featuring the course characters, which introduces the key vocabulary and concepts of the unit. A song, an activity and motivating questions are also included on this double page.

Natural Science 2

■■

Levels 1 & 2

On page three a story featuring the course characters introduces students to the key vocabulary of the unit followed by an activity designed to reflect the question types found in external exams.

Social Science 2

Levels 3 & 4

In level 3 the unit opens with a double page colour illustration showing the course characters and their friends on a school trip, while Level 4 mixes vibrant colour photography with illustration. The continued use of songs and the addition of motivating texts and questions serves as a fun, accessible introduction to the content of the unit.

■■

Levels 3 & 4

On page three the story tells of an adventure the children have had on their school trip (using the key vocabulary as luck would have it!) while their school trip project on page four introduces students to project work and different ways of presenting their knowledge.

Social Science 4

■■

Natural Science 4

■■

Levels 5 & 6

The double page illustrations are replaced by strong visual collages, mixing illustration and photography, highlighting the change in approach in these levels, without songs or characters.

Social Science 6 6

byME PRIMARY

Levels 5 & 6

The Analyse and Organise pages provide an innovative way to reintroduce and revise prior knowledge through a wide variety of activity types, including external exam type questions.

Natural Science 6 I 7

Natural & Social Science

CONTENT PAGES

■■

Throughout levels 3 to 6 extra boxes aid motivation in different ways:

Levels 1 & 2

Did you know? Bite-size chunks of extra-curricular information.

Content is presented on accessible single-lesson pages mixing age-appropriate illustration, photographs and extensive audio activities. The course characters appear throughout to help bring the content to life.

Natural Science 2

■■

These either add depth to the content presented on the page or simply provide students with fun facts to broaden their knowledge and dazzle their parents!

Natural Science 4

Levels 3 & 4

The content opens up to visually attractive double page spreads with a mixture of scientific and more cartoonstyle illustration. Activity types are graded from simple reading comprehension questions to more challenging higher order thinking skills.

Link it up. Prompts to help students think laterally and make connections between the content blocks.

Social Science 4

■■

Natural Science 4

Levels 5 & 6

In other words. Different ways of expressing information or fun and surprising ways of defining key concepts.

In higher levels the characters disappear and the focus is on the content with photography predominating and the illustration takes on a more scientific and adult tone.

Experiments & Projects Pages

Each unit includes an experiment to extend or revise the content while giving the students a thorough introduction to the scientific method and independent project work. These experiments and projects are designed to be carried out using readily available materials and are achievable in a classroom environment.

■■

Levels 3 & 4

Find out. In these years the level of challenge is increased with students running through three stages, Idea, Test and Conclusions. The challenge of the experiments also increases to reflect the more complex nature of the contents.

■■

Social Science 4

Levels 1 & 2 Natural Science 4

Let’s investigate. In early levels the process is highly simplified, running through the stages Idea and Test with Conclusions represented with tick boxes. Studio photos of real children carrying out the experiments aid motivation.

■■

Levels 5 & 6

Science project. In higher levels, the introduction to the scientifc method is complete, running through Aim, Hypothesis, Method, Test and Conclusions.

VALUES Pages

At the end of each unit students are introduced to values and ethics within the context of the content they are studying. These optional pages are designed to reinforce or extend the content of the unit.

■■

Levels 3 & 4

Think about it. Students are encouraged to think more broadly and apply what they know in the context of simple case studies. They are also introduced to new skills designed to help them to develop their autonomous learning.

■■

Social Science 4

Levels 1 & 2 Natural Science 4

Make a difference. Students are encouraged to become aware of their surroundings and how their behaviour can affect other people and the world around them. They are shown that even the smallest actions can truly make a difference. ■■

Levels 5 & 6

Fragile world. In the highest levels students are introduced to the biggest picture of all. The important issues and moral dilemmas faced by the world, stressing the importance of tolerance and understanding of others as well as the rights and obligations we have to the world around us.

Each unit section begins with a content map, fully compatible with the new LOMCE curriculum, to help see at a glance the content, evaluation criteria, learning standards and revised key competences covered in the unit. A detailed overview of the whole unit to aid in planning. It includes a simple unit summary, information on the materials required, information on preparing the experiments ahead of time and evaluation materials; an index of the digital materials is also available. Student’s Book exploitation. A simple practical design means that all the information for the relevant page in the Student’s Book can be found on a double page spread in the Teacher’s Book without losing detail. It includes lesson information at a glance, teacher’s tips for presenting, exploiting and extending the content and a bank of optional opening and closing activities as well as extra ideas to add flexibility to the project. ART AND ENGLISH: THE PERFECT MIX!

Components • Student’s Book. • Teacher’s Book with Audio CD. • Flashcard Packs (Levels 1 & 2).

'The elements of art - lines, shapes, colours, textures, forms and space - are the building blocks an artist uses to create a work of art. They are also the building blocks we used when developing this course. Let them inspire in your students an understanding and love of art.' Jane Martin, author of ByME Arts & Crafts.

Each unit starts with an authentic artwork (12 per level), selected to represent a wide variety of styles, genres and periods and appeal to Primary students. Each artwork introduces specific art concepts and techniques, while reading texts and listening activities give students the necessary information and vocabulary to talk about the artwork. Through the 6 levels, students are introduced to a huge range of different artworks giving them a thorough grounding in the history of Art.
