PLAIN SAILING In the first of a two-part in-depth interview, Skipper’s Peter Valentino speaks to Jovin Rausi – an avid sailor and the man who steered a leading boat insurance policy provider to success, bearing in mind that boat owners sought much more than an insurance cover: advice on all things boating, since owning a boat isn’t always plain sailing. Skipper also features an interview with French-born Jerome

When the Royal Malta Yacht Club decided to restart the then Middle Sea Race, now the world-famous Rolex Middle Sea Race; the Commodore then called upon you to be the Chairman of the Organising Committee. Can you list some of the challenges you faced, some of the concerns and also the most pleasant moments and memories you hold? That was indeed a great honour and an even greater pleasure to do for the two events, one in 1998 and again in 1999. The biggest challenge was to re-organise, and re-wire, the mentality and ingrained practices of committee members who (as ex-naval officers but still not

the island on modified rafts, and Malta’s central location has made it a diamond in the rough for most of the islands’ colonisers. The surrounding waters are filled with shipwrecks and little nooks and crannies where the cliffs hollow out to cave systems. Tour companies usually offer trips out to these locations for a package deal, however if you have access to a boat and a reasonable amount of experience sailing, there’s also the opportunity to access these places on your own. Here are some unmissable sights only accessible by boat. Malta’s in-a-day size and public transport make it easy to plan a holiday around accessing

BLUE GROTTO The Blue Grotto isn’t one sea cavern - it’s a whole line of them, linking each other together with shadowy, angled turns, and unmistakably blue water. Tour operators frequently take people around the Blue Grotto, and while there’s a chance that you won’t be alone if you’re visiting the caverns, there’s enough natural beauty to go around. On an especially clear day, the water will show off underwater flora and fauna in a rainbow of colours, such as red, yellow, and green. DWEJRA BAY IL-QARRABA

most - be it for strategic consultancy, human resources or event planning. Instead of setting an impossible standard on getting a return for their support, Enemed has implemented a system that allows the sponsored parties to develop a strategic and holistic approach to the point where the association will one day become self-sustainable. Malta’s first powerboat racing event, VOOMQUEST is a clear example of Enemed’s sponsorship strategy. Enemed’s collaboration with five-time world champion, Aaron Ciantar, has led to the organisation to a quarterly event that has not only attracted racers from all over Europe, but also the recognition of the Union Internationale Motonautique (UIM), the international governing body of powerboating championships. In its second year of contract with Enemed, VOOMQUEST has exceeded expectations, and is well on track. Next year will see the closure of this partnership, and the team behind the race will have to seek out new partnerships, allowing itself to flourish in new ways, while Enemed moves on and tackles a new discipline. “Our goal is to help these associations go beyond mediocrity and to shed the halfbaked approach which plagues our islands,” Mr Chircop highlighted. “With a focus on encouraging sponsorship partners to be professional, resourceful and proactive, Enemed is working to help associations tap into their potential wisely, without the risk of losing money or time,” he added.

BLUE BLOODED Skipper sails through Malta's thousands of years of sailing history.

There’s no way onto or off the island of Malta without boats. Isolated in the middle of the Mediterranean Sea, with no access to the greater landmasses of Europe or the Middle East, it’s no wonder that the blood of the Maltese is intrinsically tied to sailing, and that the history of the Maltese people started with a raft and a wish to be somewhere other than Sicily. Throughout the years, that history has only grown, with fishermen statues erected in the middle of fishing villages, and old fishermen taking over the mantle to show foreigners the island from the sea-side, and while a portion of food does get imported into the island, it’s hard to imagine a Malta without the Sunday fish markets that crowd piers and promenades, glossy, slick, fish bodies fresh from the water steaming gently in the sun. While there is a lot of Maltese history left to uncover, the traces left behind and on display around the temples say a lot already about how deeply connected the Maltese were to the sea. At Tarxien Temples, a monolith built around 3,000 BC, shows ship graffiti and fish reliefs on the walls. Similarly, archaeologists unearthed a necklace made of fish bones, which could have been used as some kind of spiritual amulet. Considering that two of the most significant temples, Ħaġar Qim and Mnajdra, are built overlooking the sea, the spiritual

bore fruit in larger fishing villages - Marsaxlokk, Wied Iż-Żurrieq, Marsascala. Though there are no written records to provide a detailed account of the tradition itself - as most of the Maltese islands at the time were illiterate contemporary accounts identified that the fish population within the islands was substantial enough to feed a good portion of the island. Stories about large catches that fed entire villages are still retold in these Maltese villages, such as Marsamxett. Traditional fishing, however, was hindered by cost. People couldn’t afford to upkeep 'luzzu' and 'kajjik', the locally-built vessels, and other equipment beyond nets and traps were impossible for most low-income families. Catches were therefore limited to what a family could eat, usually hauled up by a fisher on a small sailing boat. Furthermore, traditional fishing was affected by seasons - different fish Venetians took land belonging to the Knights

OCEANIS 51.1 The power of a new generation

Incredibly comfortable and much faster than any of her forerunners, the Oceanis 51.1 promises to be bang on trend and the most customisable and cruising yacht on the market. The first cruiser developed under the supervision of Beneteau’s marketing director, Gianguido Girotti, epitomises the exuberant energy of a new generation. Although the

To celebrate the 30th anniversary of the range, Beneteau will shortly reveal the first of a new generation of Oceanis sailing yachts to the international arena.

high level of sea-keeping and comfort that forged the reputation of this leading range is still present, Beneteau has turned their racing performances to their advantage, enhancing the Oceanis 51.1. “We capitalised on our experiences with the First and the Figaro, which are more focused on racing, by bringing their values into the heart of a cruising yacht,” Girotti explains. From bow to stem, indoors and on deck, at anchor and at sail, the Oceanis 51.1 is elegant, smart, comfortable and performs majestically. Innovative architecture The architectural choice, by Olivier Racoupeau, of a stepped hull, extending over a third of the hull, is a major element in the development of the range. In addition to the interesting aesthetics of this flared shape, the new hull creates additional interior space without changing the shape of the bottom, essential for a good performance under sail. This allows for exciting new layouts on a boat this size. The variety of colours available for the hull is the first of the many attractive customisable features. Smartly elegant With clean lines characteristic of Nauta Design, the Oceanis 51.1 emphasis on taut cruiser lines and she is a joy to move around and reassuringly safe. The furling mast, self-tailing jib and all the halyards and
sheets on the standard model are all brought back to a single winch at each of the helm stations, making her simple and easy to sail. As for harbour manoeuvring, Dock & Go technology simplifies everything. She is an ingenious sailing yacht, with no less than four different interior layouts, five rigging plans, three different keel types, and a choice of 150 available options out of 700 possible combinations – promising an individually unique Oceanis 51.1 to any future buyer.

BETWEEN COMFORT AND POWER Aboard many modern yachts, it can be hard to remember exactly what boat you’re on until your eye happens to light upon a logo. However, this is most definitely not the case with the Elan GT5, a performance cruiser with a look all of its own and style to burn.

With the swim platform, options of a cockpit galley featuring a fridge, grill and other amenities common on much larger yachts, the GT5 cockpit is designed for enjoying time with family and friends, offering ample seating area and different innovative cockpit table options converting the seating into a sunbathing lounge. A clean deck design ensures fast and safe passage forward, and enables plenty of sunbathing area with dedicated cushions on
