SILO Silo embraces North Carolina’s agricultural history and celebrates the importance of the porch in Southern culture as a welcoming meeting place between households and the larger community. The landscape surrounding the silo structure is both inviting and ecologically functional. The accessory building features easy-to-find and practical reuse materials from the historical farming industry by primarily using old barn slats and beams to form the structure and character of the building.
A simple front porch is composed of cedar posts which do not break down when exposed to the elements, and excess salvaged landscape pavers. Without railings or steps and a seven-foot roof covering, the front porch is wide enough for small events and welcoming to guests and persons with special accessibility needs.
The stained glass silo, which is representative of North Carolina’s agricultural history and the diversity of people who are a foundational part of the Hope House community will bring delightful color and light into a covered gathering space and kitchen. A pitched roof, silo, and abundance of windows allows the building to feel open and filled with natural light, while providing an enclosed area for bug-free and all-weather gatherings. The inside of the building will feel light and open, but also rustic and timeless with the agricultural building materials.
The landscape is full of native and traditional North Carolina plants. The plant selection and placement adds beauty to the site while also serving several functions including providing shade, creating privacy, transitioning from outdoor space to the porch structure, and filtering water on site through the rain garden before it enters the street.
