uy Berwyn. You've no doubt seen the decals in store windows. The apparent message is "let's support local business," a kind of community boosterism. But the benefits of buying close to home may be more than just feeling good. At the most basic level, buying locally means that money stays in the community to create local jobs, support local investment and preserve the unique character of our community. And there is more! Several studies have shown that when you buy from a local business, rather than a shop in another town or online, significantly more of that money is used to make purchases from other local businesses and service providers, creating a domino effect that can strengthen the economic base of the community. Small local businesses are the largest group of employers in Berwyn and nationally. In turn, they provide the most number of jobs to our residents. Your local purchases pay local salaries. As local businesses grow, they often hire locally, just as they tend to spend locally. In addition, our local not-for-profit organizations receive a large percentage of their support from local business owners, next to nothing from shops outside of town, and literally nothing from the online community. These local non-profits provide services,

entertainment, and support for the local community and are essential elements of the culture of our city. Where we shop, eat and have fun -- all of it makes Berwyn unique. Our one-of-a-kind businesses are an integral part of our distinctive local character. A growing body of economic research shows that in an increasingly homogenized world, entrepreneurs and skilled workers are more likely to invest and settle in communities that preserve their unique businesses and distinctive character. Because local businesses cater to the cultural base of their communities, residents can find new adventure in a familiar environment. One-of-a-kind, independent businesses are vital to the diverse character of our business environment. Maybe it’s not possible to buy everything locally. There are items we may need to buy from some other place. But when it comes to supporting our local economy, a little change really does go a long way. If we all shift just 10% of our purchases to local businesses, the results can be dramatic. If you can do more, even better. As this positive change takes hold, we can create new jobs, encourage new investment and enhance our lives. We all play an important role in the economic and cultural future of our community, be a positive part of it. Buy Berwyn – Lead our success!

Wire is Newest Music Addition to Roosevelt Road VENUE • STUDIO S • COLLABORATORY • SCHOOL • LABEL A top-flight live music venue, Rock University, and a full service music recording facility just opened on Berwyn's north side. Wire, Berwyn’s newest music complex, is located at 6815 W. Roosevelt Road. The venue is the brainchild of managing partners Christopher Neville, Jon Smith, Paul Bolger and Tracey Dear. Wire has created a place for professionals, amateurs and students to incubate ideas and inspire one another. The spot is designed to become a base for musicians and music fans alike, in an atmosphere that fosters reflection and creativity and celebrates music in all of its forms. The long-term purpose of Wire is to recapture and re-establish the Chicago music scene as a dominant force in the global music industry. The collaboratory will develop and nurture new talent on both the creative and technical ends of the musical spectrum. The main components of the development include recording studios, a music venue and educational programs. Through the support of the City of Berwyn and the BDC, Wire received Tax Increment Financing (TIF) for the redevelopment of the vacant, former Teamsters Union Hall, which was originally built as the Oakwyn Theater in 1934. The partners spent more than $1 million on renovations to the 10,000 square foot space. The resulting layout includes a venue space with a 350 person capacity, a mezzanine with a VIP viewing area and administrative offices, and a recording studio in the upstairs at the rear. Additionally, six small private classrooms and a student lounge are on the main level behind the stage. Wire kicked off the opening weekend with a performance from founding member Chris Neville’s group, Tributosaurus as Electric Light Orchestra (ELO) on October 4. On Saturday, October 5, founding member Paul Bolger’s band, Mr. Blotto, took the stage. Founding member Tracey Dear’s band, Waco Brothers later performed on October 26. To keep up on their event calendar or to purchase tickets, visit www.wireismusic.com.

Marlene credits her family as her inspiration. She shared, “Long hours and a seven-day work week could not have been achieved without the love and support of my family – both my home and my flower shop family – because we are intertwined as one. I truly love being part of this community and giving back is important to me.” “Marlene Comella’s efforts to beautify the city and to educate residents of all ages will have lasting benefits for Berwyn. Simplify your sales effort now save time, money and build in 2014 As we approach the New Year there’s still time to reflect on the marketing you did in 2013 so that you can tighten up your strategy for 2014 by narrowing and defining you target customer. might seem counterintuitive to narrow down who you intend to market to in the beginning, but this focus increases your chances of successful communication with the right people instead of wasting resources.

Select target market You may have opened shop but the old saying “open and they shall come” hasn’t worked out as planned. Let’s face it, without sales, little else can occur. For stronger sales in the upcoming year let’s take a small step back to understand the main point in the entrepreneur’s sales process by “selecting our target customer” and then moving forward. Right now is the best time to plan for 2014!

Step back & focus As an entrepreneur you’re already juggling many hats, making it even more difficult to target to everyone. This is even truer if your marketing budget is slim. To eliminate clutter and stay on track, the owner must step back and focus on a target group of customers instead of assuming “everyone needs this.”

Identify As your company grows and becomes more financially established it can then consider targeting different page groups that might want or need your product. It

12

By narrowing down your target market, it is easier to determine what problem(s) a group of customers have in common. You can also better identify purchasing habits, their budgets and needs. By identifying the group of customers with a problem, this gives you the biggest possible market that may benefit from your solution. For example: A boutique shop in Berwyn that sells stylish women’s clothing at a mid-range price would like to target every woman in Berwyn. That’s a lot of area to cover and would require a large budget. Instead, the business should focus on the following target: females ages 21-42 years, looking for deals and specials, frequents nail and hair salons to keep up appearances, goes out to clubs or lounges to show off their new style, and has a career in an office setting. Now that you narrowed down it’s time to make the connection. In our example, the owner can cross promote

fliers with local nail and hair salons and can go further by inviting employees and their clients to secret sales. Host a fashion show at their boutique to feature new outfits. Promote the event through Facebook and contact the local media for coverage. At events, build a strategy for guests to “like” your Facebook page and make sure everyone gets a deal. Network at business after hour events and build relationships. Reach out to the local community college business department to be a featured guest speaker

on entrepreneurship and hand out goodie bags. Grow your Facebook Page with in-store signage and mention to customers at the end of the sale. Once your “likes” grow, run surveys to discover new trends or ideas. It’s a two-way street. Your marketing efforts will be an on ongoing cycle as it can take up to seven or more attempts before a potential customer sees your message. However, a well-defined target market brings clearer messages and better outcomes.

Partners in our COMMUNITY bsd100.org School District 100 School District 100 believes that parent communication is paramount for student success. This year we are using digital platforms more than ever because we know parents are already there and are more likely to be on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram on a regular basis to communicate with family and friends. Our social media platforms allow staff to inform parents about student achievement, calendar reminders and athletic results instantaneously from anywhere in the school. Amazing instruction occurs every day in our schools and we want everyone to know about it! Last year we hosted 40 site visits where districts from as far as Minnesota came to our district to see our 1:1 program in action. These educators can now check our social media platforms to see the great strides we are making in District 100 and share the information with their staff. School District 100 is quite popular outside of 60402. Read what the Deerfield Superintendent wrote about us on his blog: http://dps109supt.edublogs.org/ and visit us for all of District 100’s social media sites. We want you to like us, follow us and retweet and repost our news! nb98.org school District 98 This year our teachers will be implementing the revised curriculum that has been completely aligned to the Common Core State Standards. We now have a consistent curriculum across all grades and across all of our schools. The curriculum is not only aligned to Common Core, it is also more rigorous. Expectations have been raised and we will be expecting more of the students. I encourage our families to become familiar with these grade level expectations so that we can work together in order to support and make sure that our students are successful. In addition, please note that in November during Parent Teacher Conferences we will have a new website up, nb98.org. The website has been updated and will be used as another way to communicate and provide information about the district and schools. berwynparks.org Berwyn Park District Celebrate the holiday season on page Saturday, December 7, 2013 at 5:30pm with the Berwyn Park District. morton.edu morton college Gov. Quinn’s announcement of a $4.5 million gift for classroom expansion on the Morton College campus was the result of the dedicated efforts of many people who believed deeply in the mission of the college and in its community. With 76.6% of its student body identified as Hispanic, Morton College is the seventh largest two-year public Hispanic-Serving Institution (HSI) in the United States - the largest east of the Mississippi River. This fall, Morton College will draft a new diversity policy that promises to re-engineer its operational procedures in order to best serve its students and community.
