President

The

in his own words

Hello Berwyn!

I

t’s been a very busy year for the Berwyn Development Corporation Economic Development and Chamber Services Commissions. To date we’ve been very fortunate to see new businesses open and existing businesses expand in all of our major corridors. Projects currently under construction MAL MONTOYA President include Frank Thomas’s Big Hurt BDC Board of Directors Brew House on the southwest corner of Cermak Road and Oak Park Avenue, Torres Fresh Market on 26th Street and Familia Fresh Market on Oak Park Avenue in the Depot District. As proud as we are of our accomplishments in the first half of the year, there is more to come. According to Chicago Magazine, one of the five best things to do in September is to attend the Berwyn Rt66 Car Show. This year will be bigger and better than ever starting with a cook-out on Friday September 5 at Paisans Pizzeria & Bar to officially welcome all of our out of town guests to the Car Show on September 6.

The BDC’s Depot District Special Events Committee will celebrate its 13th annual Oktoberfest this year. The successful two-day event takes place in the Depot District on both sides of the Metra tracks between Oak Park and Home Avenues. Visitors will enjoy great local food, live performances, amusement rides, kids’ activities, crafters, vendors, and of course, a world class beer garden. To close out the month, the Berwyn Historical Society’s 8th annual Historic Berwyn’s Bungalow Tour will be coming up in September. Cited as the Best Neighborhood for Bungalows by This Old House magazine, Berwyn boasts one of the largest concentrations of Chicago-style bungalow homes in the nation. Docents will share the history of each house on the tour as well as indicate any special or unique features the house may have. Tour-goers may walk, bike, and or drive between tour houses. And finally, it’s all about BerwynStyle! Since 2007, the City of Berwyn, in partnership with the BDC, has successfully deployed its “Why Berwyn?” Integrated Marketing Campaign both to entice visitors and residents alike to enjoy the entertainment, dining and shopping options in Berwyn and to highlight Berwyn as a prime location for business. Throughout the region, many have seen the rising sun bulls-eye and strategically placed bungalow, in conjunction with a bold statement clearly encapsulating the Berwyn brand. Now, in its 8th year, the 2014 Integrated Marketing Campaign proudly introduces “BerwynStyle -Est. 1908-” to carry the tradition forward. “BerwynStyle Est. 1908” A top choice destination for visitors and homebuyers The City of Berwyn and the Berwyn Development Corporation are pleased to announce the launch of the City of Berwyn’s 2014 Integrated Marketing Campaign.

BerwynStyle Now in its eighth year, the 2014 ”BerwynStyle Est. 1908” campaign continues Berwyn’s tradition of branding itself as a top-choice destination for visitors as well as move-up and first-time homebuyers. This year, the campaign has maintained its bull’s eye graphic as a rising sun set against an iconic bungalow. “For the past century, Berwyn has proudly been called the ‘City of Homes’ because of our architecturally rich neighborhoods that showcase a variety of housing styles, most notably our classic bungalows,” said Mayor Robert J. Lovero. “More recently, the PAGE economic revitalization of our business districts

4

has made Berwyn not only a great place to live but also a thriving destination to visit. We welcome newcomers to get some BerwynStyle and join us as we continue to our tradition of remarkable neighborhoods.” Mal Montoya, BDC Board President, added, “Just a short trip from Chicago’s Loop, Berwyn is a destination that can be enjoyed by families, urban dwellers and entrepreneurs alike. We offer inviting neighborhoods, a vibrant business community and a cultural scene that embraces the arts. We are blessed with diversity in residents and business and welcome visitors to explore the many amenities that answer the question,

Why Berwyn? Once you get to know the area, you find that BerwynStyle is a lifestyle built within a trendy neighborhood.” The 2014 campaign runs from June through September and includes billboards in Chicago neighborhoods, posters on CTA el platforms, direct-toconsumer outreach through special events and direct mailing, digital advertising and radio advertising.

Diversity/LGBTQ Berwyn is a destination that thrives on diversity. The City of Berwyn proudly welcomes the LGBTQ community to our progressive city through outreach at the Pride Parade and Northalsted Market Days.

WhyBerwyn.com The WhyBerwyn.com website provides visitors with a stream of information on the area’s real estate, retailers and service providers, schools, parks and recreation, cultural hot spots and special events. Whatever the angle, visitors are certain to find an answer to the question, “Why Berwyn?” The site includes a comprehensive calendar of events that details the City’s many festivals and recreational opportunities as well as a full local business listing to promote the business base and offer convenient access to Berwyn’s hottest places to shop, dine and relax. @whyberwyn @whyberwyn

Berwyn Depot District Beautification – Oak Park Avenue This project will improve the Depot District transit corridor by adding visually attractive infrastructure elements, correcting non-compliant ADA issues on sidewalks, retrofitting an existing signalized intersection with preemption for emergency vehicles going to the adjacent hospital. Further, the area will experience an increase in ridership at the Oak Park Avenue, Harlem Avenue and LaVergne MetraBNSF commuter rail station by significantly enhancing the transportation experience.

Partners in our COMMUNITY bsd100.org BERWYN SCHOOL DISTRICT 100 Virtual Summer School program School District 100’s pilot Virtual Summer School program, available through the summer break from June 9 to August 8, is proving to be extremely successful. Statistics for a 3 week period from June 9 to June 27 show VSS students, fully engaged and reading 13,678 online books, and logging in 328,386 minutes of math, an amazing accomplishment! School offices will reopen on August 4 and we will be registering students for the 2015 school year on August 6 between 7 am and 3 pm and on August 7 from 1 to 6 pm. Returning families are asked to complete the convenient online registration prior to bringing their documents to their child’s school; The Back to School Carnival will be held on Sunday, August 17 from 12 to 3 pm at Proksa Park and the first day of school is August 18. Please visit our website for additional information. www.bsd100.org.

bn98.org BERWYN NORTH SCHOOL DISTRICT 98 While students are enjoying their summer break, District 98 is preparing for the coming school year. There are several major projects taking place this summer. All district facilities are being re-wired so that they can all have wireless capability. This is one step towards fulfilling the district’s technology vision. Once the wireless is in place, a new VOIP phone system will be installed replacing the current system that is about fifteen years old. In addition to the wireless and phone system, new cameras will be installed in all of our schools. District 98 has received an $80,000 Illinois School Security Grant. This will allow us to install digital cameras and recording devices in all of our schools. Through an intergovernmental agreement we plan on sharing access with the Berwyn Police Department. These projects will ensure that our schools continue to provide up-to-date, safe and secure learning environments for our children.

berwynparks.org BERWYN PARK DISTRICT As the summer continues on, Berwyn Community agencies and Area Veterans are proud to be bringing The Moving Wall to Berwyn. The Moving Wall is the half-size replica of the Washington, DC Vietnam Veterans Memorial. This wonderful memorial will be on display 24 hours a day at Proksa Park from August 7 —11. The Berwyn Park District is looking for those who are interested in volunteering to help make The Moving Wall’s visit a very special and memorable event. For those who are interested in volunteering, please contact Conor Cahill at ccahill@berwynparks.org. Our Fall Brochure will be released soon. morton201.org MORTON WEST HIGH SCHOOL Having worked for over thirty years in District 201, I’ve grown to love and recognize the strength of the communities serving Morton West High School. A strong community supports its schools and Morton West High School has been a recipient of such support. As I retire from District 201, I ask you to extend the same support to the new principal of Morton West High School, Mr. Josh McMahon. Mr. McMahon has worked at Morton West High School as an administrator for the past five years and in the community for ten years. He will continue to lead, an already awesome school, to the next level. I wish Morton West High School and the communities of Berwyn, Cicero, Lyons, Stickney, Forest View and McCook all the best in the future. —Joe Gunty
