The

in his own words

Hello Berwyn!

MAL MONTOYA, BDC PRESIDENT VP, Business & Community Development AztecAmerica Bank

A

fter a long and cold winter, I’m excited to say that the Berwyn Development Corporation is ready to make the most of the season ahead. I’m very proud of the many dedicated business leaders and residents working hard behind the scenes to make this the best year ever. As you may know, the BDC has two primary functions: economic development and chamber services. The former focuses its efforts on attracting new businesses to Berwyn, such as baseball Hall-ofFamer Frank Thomas’ new restaurant and brew pub, the Big Hurt Brew House, opening later this summer on the corner of Cermak and Oak Park Avenue. To further assist the economic development of Berwyn’s growing business community, several BDC commissions, led by BDC Board members, meet monthly to review a broad scope of items, including TIF and Commercial Loan applications. In recent years, Berwyn has enjoyed tremendous economic growth in all of its major corridors and this year, by all accounts, will be no different. The other primary function of the BDC falls within our Chamber Services division, which welcomes two new commissions that will draw a focus to Roosevelt and Cermak Roads’ vibrant

contributions to all who live and work in Berwyn. Recently, the Roosevelt Road Special Events Commission successfully hosted its inaugural “Green Mile” event during St. Patrick’s Day weekend. On May 5, Cermak Road will serve as a backdrop for our Cinco de Mayo Fiesta, a family-friendly block party celebrating Berwyn’s vibrant Mexican community. Bring the family and enjoy our local restaurants and businesses along with mariachi, folkloric dancers and DJ to entertain guests. June welcomes the beginning of the Berwyn Township Farmers’ Market at Lesak Park. Later that month on June 21, the BDC will host the inaugural Berwyn Brew Fest. The event will feature beer from microbrewers from throughout the Midwest to raise funds to benefit the “The Moving Wall.” The Moving Wall, a replica of the Washington, DC Vietnam Veterans Memorial, will come to Proksa Park from August 7 through August 11, 2014. Here’s to making this the best year ever!

Partners in our COMMUNITY bsd100.org BERWYN SCHOOL DISTRICT 100 Virtual Summer School program This summer, many students in District 100 will be part of a pilot Virtual Summer School program designed to promote learning gains over the summer. “Summer learning loss” is something that teachers all across the country face - and often requires re-teaching content and skills from the previous school year for the first 5-6 weeks of school. Having access to a wireless device (iPad or MacBook) throughout the summer allows our students to take advantage of digital learning tools, interventions and feedback from skilled teachers. Students will be assigned a teacher who will track their progress, give feedback on student learning, and provide interventions when needed. We will conduct our traditional summer school, but Virtual Summer School will expand learning opportunities to more students. We are looking forward to the success of extending learning to so many students this summer.

morton201.org MORTON WEST HIGH SCHOOL Morton West High School led the way in STEM education! Much has been said in the media recently about how Chicagoland will become a national hub for technology development. In order to prepare students from Morton West High School to compete and contribute to this industry, we have adopted a national STEM curriculum know as Project Lead the Way (PLTW) which includes new courses such as Introduction to Engineering. Recently, PLTW students participated in the 37th Annual Illinois Drafting Educators’ Association Computer Aided Design (CAD) Regional Competition at Triton College. Students competed in three events: Introductory CAD, 3D CAD Modeling, and Assembly Modeling. Morton West students won some of the top finishing awards. Introductory CAD contestants Victor Rodriguez and Januario Mora won 1st and 2nd place. 3D CAD Modeling contestants David Solomon, placed 1st while Assembly Modeling contestant Isaac Moreno placed 2nd. We look forward to how our new Robotic Club will fair in the upcoming spring competitions.

GINA’S ITALIAN ICE 37 years and counting! Yes, that’s how long Gina’s Italian Ice has been a mainstay in Berwyn. In 1977, Gina purchased a store front that was going to be a pizza place, but was never completed. Determined to give the people in the neighborhood a delicious place to cool down, she began making Italian Ice Lemonade by hand; using a recipe she had learned in Italy. Fast forward to present day and Gina’s Italian Ice is more popular than ever with an expanded menu of Italian Ice flavors and ice cream. Each flavor is still being made with the original recipe, by hand daily, using fresh fruits bought from local markets. Gina’s is traditionally open from May through September and will be a delicious way to cool down this summer! Visit: www.ginasitalianice.com 708.484.0944

La Michoacana , located in the heart of the bustling Cermak Road corridor, is a neighborhood favorite. This Mexican ice cream shop is open year round and offers customers an extensive menu including mangoneadas, ice cream, yogurt, fruit scoops and juices as well as snacks such as nachos, tamales and popcorn. If you have never tried one of their mangoneadas, don’t deprive yourself of this treat any longer. This frozen Mexican dessert combines flavored sorbet with a hot, sour, salty concoction called chamoy. The combination of flavors is truly unique and will make you a fan for life!
