Berwyn Beckons, “Make the Move” City of Berwyn Positioned as Destination for New Residents The City of Berwyn and the Berwyn Development Corporation are pleased to announce the launch of the City of Berwyn’s 2013 Integrated Marketing Campaign. including our 23 parks and more than 500 recreational activities. Berwyn has been highly resilient despite the state of the economy, and we welcome newcomers to Make the Move and grow with us.”

Make the Move In June, the City of Berwyn and the BDC launched the City of Berwyn’s 2013 Integrated Marketing Campaign. Now in its seventh year, the 2013 ”Make the Move” campaign continues Berwyn’s tradition of branding itself as a top-choice destination for move-up and first-time homebuyers. “Berwyn has become a standout in the Chicagoland area,” said Mayor Robert J. Lovero. “We’ve been recognized nationally for our bungalows and economic development efforts. Our residents page enjoy amenities

4

Jon Fey, President of the BDC, added, “Located just west of Chicago’s South Loop, Berwyn has developed into destination for both families and entrepreneurs. We have charming neighborhoods, a lively business community and a cultural scene that has also beckoned to creatives. Our ability to maintain our diversity has been a driver for our success and has helped attract visitors and new residents.” The 2013 campaign runs from June through September and includes billboards in Chicago neighborhoods, posters on CTA el platforms, direct-to-consumer outreach

through special events and direct mailing, and radio advertising. Online advertising will blend the Berwyn brand with promotion of special events and accolades for the area’s housing stock in order to promote tourism and homeownership in Berwyn. Berwyn has established itself as a “livable” community as evidenced through a wide variety of transportation choices, equitable and affordable housing options, short commutes to major job centers, and an enhanced sense of community through easily accessible and walkable amenities like parks, schools, churches, and business districts.

Diversity Berwyn is a destination that thrives on diversity. The City of Berwyn proudly welcomes the LGBTQ community to Make the Move into our progressive city through

outreach at the Pride Parade (float pictured below) and Northalsted Market Days.

Mayor Lovero stated, “Berwyn’s diversity is a great asset. We have a comfortable yet vibrant community, and we welcome all with open arms.” Additional information can be obtained at 708.788.8100 and at www.whyberwyn.com. This campaign can also be followed at: @whyberwyn @whyberwyn

Have a Dream for Your Business but Need a Cash Infusion? Berwyn’s new Microloan Program can help

Whether you are a start-up or an existing business looking for upgrades or growth, Berwyn has a new resource to help you finance your plans. Approved by Berwyn’s City Council on May 28, the BDC’s Commercial Loan Commission will administer a Microloan Program for Berwyn’s start-ups and established businesses. The Microloan Program joins the City’s existing Commercial Loan Program, which also provides incentives to existing commercial property owners and business tenants to renovate and/or expand their operations and for new businesses to locate in Berwyn. Mal Montoya, BDC Commercial Loan Commission Chair & Board Treasurer, stated, “The addition of this new program empowers us to help more Berwyn entrepreneurs and allows smaller projects to move forward by cutting away some of the red tape.” The Microloan Program provides funding between $1,000 to $10,000 for a variety of uses including start-up costs, purchase of equipment, working capital expenses, facility rehabilitation, and more. This program offers an expedited application and underwriting process with loan approval or denial typically occurring within 4-6 weeks. In order to remain eligible for microloan funding, businesses must follow loan criteria, which includes having or obtaining a business license from the City of Berwyn, keeping the business in Berwyn during the term of the loan, and maintaining compliance with all city ordinances and applicable building codes. stipulations and restrictions may apply. As a source of alternative financing, the Microloan Program and Commercial Loan Program provide capital where the traditional lending market cannot. As a result, these local lending programs provide a second chance opportunity for promising projects to move forward. The BDC’s Commercial Loan Commission administers loans to encourage entrepreneurship, support new business, and maintain diverse business corridors. The Commission reviews each application on a first-come, first-served basis on its own merits. The BDC’s Commercial Loan Commission is composed of

ASK DR. RON

Does your office treat Workplace Injuries or Automobile Accident Injuries?

Yes I do My office provides exceptional care or the person injured at work (Workers Compensation WC) or in an Automobile Accident (Personal Injury PI) We even take the headache out of most of the paperwork My staff is fully trained and understands how important the paperwork is This leaves less stress on the patient and allows him or her to focus on getting healthy When a patient comes to my office with a Work Injury or Auto Injury we ask that they provide us with all necessary Claim information necessary addresses and phone numbers We then will do all the appropriate behind the scenes administrative work to get your claim into my office Once thoroughly evaluated treatment can beginMy goal is not only to get the patient out of pain but to provide them with superb care to make the body even better than it was prior to the injury

Partners in our COMMUNITY bsd100.org School District 100 We are preparing for the FY14 school year! Test scores are coming in from the state and our advance implementation of the Common Core standards that all schools in the State are required to implement will benefit our students in the years to come. The mandated Common Core Standards are more rigorous and will affect all test scores until the Illinois Standard Achievement Test (ISATs) are developed using 100% of the Common Core guidelines.

We also have our big Back to School Carnival on Sunday, August 18th with the South Berwyn School District 100, Berwyn C.A.R.E.S., South Berwyn School District Foundation, Pav YMCA, and West Suburban Special Recreation Association, which will feature school supply give-aways, meet and greet with school faculty, family related vendors, games, pony rides, a petting zoo, a trackless train, crafts, and the annual Wacky Quacky Duck Splash to support recreation opportunities for the Park District and the Special Recreation Association.

jpactheatre.com Jedlicka performing arts center at morton college A Streetcar Named Desire September 13 - 28 Set in the French Quarter of New Orleans during the restless years following World War Two, A Streetcar Named Desire, is the story of Blanche DuBois, a fragile and neurotic woman on a desperate prowl for someplace in the world to call her own.

The Board of Education has instructed the District Advisory Council for Educational Excellence committee (DACEE) to resurrect their sub committees in an effort to provide the district with much needed input regarding educational needs in our district. The committees are comprised of Board members, parents, teachers, administrators and community members who want to ensure that we provide the best education for District 100 students. If you would like to participate in one of the committees, please contact Dr. Fields sfields@bsd100.org!

Registration is open for the Early Childhood Learning Program and rentals are available at both Proksa Park and the Liberty Cultural Center.

morton201.org Morton West High School On Sunday, June 9th, Morton West High School celebrated the success of 611 students at Morton West High School’s 54th Commencement Ceremony at the U.I.C. Pavilion. Beginning a new tradition for District 201 graduates, 54 “Class of 2013” students were honored as Summa Cum Laude at the commencement. This recognition of “With Highest Praise or Distinction, modeled from the Collegiate Honors Framework, was obtained by Morton West students who earned a 3.90 grade point average or higher on a 4.0 weighted scale. This change in achievement recognition eliminated the necessity for naming a valedictorian and salutatorian. Instead, the two commencement speeches were selected through an application process. Neriangela Velez and Sany Nguyen delivered speeches that truly represented the sentiments of their fellow graduates. The entire Morton West High School community offers best wishes to the Class of 2013 as they pursue their postsecondary goals and aspirations.

nb98.org Berwyn District 98 Next year we will have the ability to provide almost all services for our students in their neighborhood school. There will no longer be long lines during registration. Students will no longer need to be transported to another school because there is no more space in their neighborhood school. All students will attend school based upon school boundaries. Please refer to our district website for school boundaries. berwynparks.org Berwyn Park District End the summer on a high note and join us for the last couple weeks of summer. Adventure Camp ends August 9th, so you still have time. If you are a current participant at the YMCA or the Rec Center and want to try our camp, show us your paid receipt for a $5/day discount.

HARLEM AVENUE LOUNGE Why sing the blues when you can kick back and listen to it? Harlem Avenue Lounge is an authentic neighborhood blues bar with a juke joint atmosphere. Over 20 years ago, owner Kenneth Zimmerman established the venue to showcase live music ranging from traditional blues to rock ‘n’ roll. With a solid history of booking outstanding musicians, an evening at the lounge is sure to please. Professional musicians perform blues most weeknights and on Thursdays, local amateurs can participate in the "Open Mic Blues Jam." Don’t be surprised to catch spontaneous jam sessions, too. Patrons have ended up on stage playing alongside strangers and finding their rhythm in the moment. Come check out the place that has some serious soul.
