A word from our President. We’re now a little more than halfway through an exciting 2019! Although we were met with rain and hail at our first events of the season, it was no match for us as we putted our way through April’s Mini-Golf Pub Crawl and discovered new treasures at June’s Clean Sweep Garage Sale. Throughout June, Berwyn supported and celebrated the LGBTQ+ community during the City’s Pride Month. For the third year running, the City of Berwyn held the annual Pride Walk, a family-friendly event that celebrates Berwyn’s growing LGBTQ+ community and thriving diversity. Before heading to the Pride Walk, the community joined BUNGALO for the Pride in the Park Picnic at Proksa Park. Throughout the month, local businesses showed their support by incorporating Pride into their logo designs and featured themed items for sale. It’s amazing to see how Berwyn has evolved and continues to grow as a community. We will take strides to make sure our City is even more welcoming and inclusive. I had the opportunity to sit down with City Clerk Marge Paul, who provided some background on the history of the LGBTQ community here in Berwyn:

“The Berwyn United Neighborhood Gay and Lesbian Organization (BUNGALO) was formed after the Berwyn City Council at the time refused to add sexual orientation to its Human Rights Ordinance. The Human Rights Ordinance was, in fact, federally mandated because a cross was burned on the front lawn of a home owned by a family of color. This occurred in the 1980’s. BUNGALO originated when LGBTQ residents asked to be covered by the Human Rights Ordinance. The mayor at the time made the famous remark that ‘There are no gay people in Berwyn.’ The LGBTQ residents who stood up for us then started BUNGALO to press for inclusion. It took BUNGALO 13 years to have sexual orientation finally included in the ordinance. I know, I helped write it and get it passed. BUNGALO worked hard to create acceptance of LGBTQ residents. Our motto was “We too are Berwyn”. Members joined every civic organization in the city. It is because of their work for inclusion that Berwyn became more welcoming. The active participation of BUNGALO in Berwyn led to the BDC’s rainbow ‘bull’s eye’ marketing campaign which was the first effort by a Chicago suburb to market their city to the LGBTQ community. BDC’s sponsorship of Halsted Market Days followed years later. This is the 50th anniversary of Stonewall. Our community should celebrate. But, we also must remember how we got here. Recent history allows us to finally say that Berwyn is a welcoming community. I know that you will agree with me that we have more to do to welcome home our transgendered brothers and sisters.” In July, we kicked off the summer right at the 4th of July Fireworks celebration. This event was generously sponsored by World’s Largest Laundromat, Berwyn Park District, North Berwyn Park District, J. Sterling Morton High School District 201, Berwyn Firefighters Local 506, Illinois Municipal Police Association Local 1, and the City of Berwyn. We can’t wait for all the community events ahead! We have an action-packed second half of the year with the upcoming Taste of Cermak Road presented by Mayor Robert J. Lovero in July, themed Cruise Nites in July and August, followed by the WeatherTech® Route 66 Car Show sponsored by Paisans Pizzeria & Bar in late August, and Berwyn’s Oktoberfest presented by Loyola Medicine and MacNeal Hospital in September. Check out our community calendar on the newly revamped WhyBerwyn.com for even more events and happenings around our fair City. We are excited to announce the new Why Berwyn? Marketing Campaign that recently kicked off in June and continues promoting our messages of “Handcrafted Community” and “Full of Character(s).” While you’re on local CTA lines or hanging out around Chicago, look for some familiar faces. For the first time ever, you can also catch our Berwyn characters in action on digital advertising at the Ogilvie Transportation Center in downtown Chicago! Not only will we showcase our characters, but also the various events that celebrate our Handcrafted Community. Our Economic Development team continues to deliver exciting news for our community. Since January, we’ve welcomed nine new businesses, offering new and exciting shopping opportunities and services for residents and visitors alike. The former McDonald’s location at 6900 W Ogden Ave is now home to Slice Factory’s newest location and headquarters, complete with a 24-hour Slice Thru! Adding to the economic strength of the Ogden Avenue corridor, their former location will be transformed into their catering division, Big Mama’s Kitchen. In the Cermak Road corridor, we are pleased to announce that Old Navy will be joining Cermak Plaza later this year. In addition to gaining new businesses, we are celebrating a few significant milestones this year. Congratulations to MacNeal Hospital and Ogden Top & Trim on 100 years in Berwyn! With that, enjoy the summer and fall in our We offer a wide range beautiful City that is #NothingLikeASuburb!

The City of Berwyn and the Berwyn Development Corporation (BDC) are pleased to announce the launch of the City of Berwyn’s 2019 Integrated Marketing Campaign. The campaign’s objective is to pique the curiosity of Chicago area residents and to create a driving desire to visit and live in Berwyn. Since 2007, the City of Berwyn has actively promoted its rich history and forward momentum. In 2017, the campaign was showcased as a best practice in the Homes for a Changing Region Toolkit, which was created by the Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning (CMAP), Metropolitan Mayors Caucus and Metropolitan Planning Council. The toolkit is an online guide to help communities plan for their current and future residents. Berwyn was selected as a case study due to our success in stimulating investment and building brand awareness for the community. The 2019 campaign continues its storytelling under the “Nothing Like A Suburb” tagline that has been used for the past five years. This year’s messaging carries over from 2017 and 2018 and reflects Berwyn’s core values and assets—our individuality and genuine community. Outdoor advertising and social media will again focus on the theme Full of Character(s). This year, the BDC collaborated with local photographer Joel Gonzalez of WeOurStory again to capture the campaign images. Each theme highlights specific local “characters” to help illustrate our message. Our characters, whether they are homegrown or have seen Berwyn as a beacon for their craft, have made an impact on our cultural landscape. The subjects of our ads are:

Big Guys Sausage Stand is a Roosevelt Road staple known for their homemade sausages and hand ground burgers, as well as their other made-from-scratch menu items that meat lovers rave about. Not only do they serve up some of the best burgers and sausages around town, they also have equally delicious vegetarian options. Head over to the Veltway and chow down on their Beyond Meat burger. It’s a big 6oz patty on a brioche bun cooked in its own pan and dressed however you like it. For a vegan option, substitute the brioche bun for Turano’s French bread! The vegetarian options don’t stop there—they also carry hand-battered onion rings, spinach pizza puffs and their famous fresh-cut fries.

The Grilled Veggie Salad at Paisans Pizzeria & Bar is not your average salad. Starting off with grilled Romaine lettuce, the dish is topped with roasted tomatoes, carrots, yellow squash, zucchini, asparagus, house-made roasted lemon vinaigrette, and can be made with or without goat cheese. Paisans has a wide variety of vegetarian options, from appetizers like their Fried Asparagus or Tuscan Bruschetta to entrees liked Baked Ziti or Luigi’s Linguini. Paisans also has the Beyond Burger which can be substituted on any of their killer gourmet burgers. And of course, there’s PIZZA! Choose from deep dish, stuffed, Sicilian, regular, extra thin or gluten free, with your choice of a dozen vegetarian toppings to choose from.

Lavergne’s Tavern is a Depot District staple for good reason. Not only do they have a comfortable atmosphere complete with a great patio and an awesome mural serving as a backdrop, they have an extensive food and drink selection that includes vegetarian options. Eleven dishes on their regular menu are vegetarian as-is, such as the Blistered Shishito Peppers, Tavern Salad, Nopales Tacos and more. Many of their other items can easily be modified into vegetarian-friendly dishes. The latest addition to the Summer Menu is Yakisoba with a vegetarian-style twist. The dish includes stir-fry noodles, asparagus, sweet corn, tomato, tofu, Shishito peppers, egg, Yakisoba sauce, pickled ginger and herbs. This take on a traditional Japanese dish can easily be made vegan by requesting no egg. They also offer multiple vegetarian and vegan options on their Sunday Brunch menu, available from 10am-2pm. They change their menu seasonally, so you’ll always have new vegetarian options to try!

Known around town for their delicious take on American fast food, what many may not know is Grill Stop’s vegan options are just as tasty! The Gyro Sandwich is a big hit with plant based “meat”, tomatoes, onion, and even vegan tzatziki sauce all served up on a warm pita. When compared to Grill Stop’s gyro with real meat, this carefully crafted vegan dish has absolutely no difference in taste. Take the taste test yourself or take our word and go vegan. Grill Stop’s vegan options are perfect for beginners looking to take the plunge into a vegan lifestyle!

With 374 beds, a 2,000 person staff, and more than 550 medical professionals specializing in obstetrics, orthopedics, cardiology, cardiac rehabilitation, sports medicine, oncology, home care, bariatrics, behavioral health, immediate emergency care and more, MacNeal Hospital is a far cry from its humble beginnings a century ago. The original home of Dr. MacNeal

While a lot has changed with MacNeal Hospital, its mission of providing quality, compassionate care to patients and the community remains the same. In celebration of MacNeal Hospital’s landmark 100th anniversary, here are five little-known facts about its history.

1

2

Before it was a hospital, it was a home.

By the 1940s, MacNeal Hospital provided the most care—and jobs—in Berwyn.

In 1919, Dr. Arthur MacNeal launched a small practice from the living room of his unassuming, ten-room residence in Berwyn. His patient network boomed and he quickly outgrew his facility. Five years later, he broke ground on a threestory building a few blocks north—the beginnings of MacNeal Hospital as it is known today.

As Berwyn grew into a thriving town, so did the hospital. By 1929, MacNeal constructed an additional floor onto its original, three-story structure to accommodate increasing demand.

12

Just a decade later, construction began on a new expansion that would add 165 beds to the facility. By the 1940s, MacNeal was the city’s top employer. As equal parts employer and consumer, the hospital ushered in a wealth of opportunity and development for Berwyn and the surrounding communities in Chicago’s western suburbs.

Dr. MacNeal

4 3 Not just a healthcare provider, but a leading educator. In 1969, MacNeal instituted the first department of family practice residency program in Illinois. This program not only helped train future family physicians—it also established MacNeal as a teaching hospital. Today, as a member of Trinity Health and Loyola Medicine, the family practice residency program is just one of many educational programs offered at MacNeal Hospital. Providing exceptional medical services to patients while cultivating leaders in healthcare and education are now integral parts of the MacNeal Hospital mission.

5 The Primary Stroke Center has years of experience and the certifications to show for it. MacNeal Hospital is nationally recognized for its dedication to stroke education, prevention and recovery. The Primary Stroke Center, which has served patients for over ten years, is a recipient of the Joint Commission Gold Seal of Approval® and American Heart Association/American Stroke Association Stroke Gold Plus Quality Award—testaments to the comprehensive care and rehabilitation services MacNeal offers its patients throughout the recovery process.

2019. Issue 3

MacNeal’s cardiovascular care is ranked among the best in the nation. The coronary care unit at MacNeal Hospital may have opened in 1964, but its leading-edge technology, state-of-the-art facilities, advanced diagnostics and minimally invasive procedures earned it a spot as one of IBM Watson Health’s top 50 cardiovascular hospitals in 2018. For patients, that quality of care makes a big difference. “From my visit to the ER where I was diagnosed with a heart attack within minutes of arrival, to a complication-free stent procedure, to graduation from cardiac rehab, MacNeal made it easy for me to focus on what I needed to do to take better care of myself,” says Karen Maher, a MacNeal cardiovascular care patient. “I was worried that I would not be able to make the necessary lifestyle changes and would fail myself and my family, but the Cardiac Rehab Team held my hand just enough to get me motivated to live a healthier life,” says Karen. She adds, “I feel very lucky to have walked through those ER doors.” MacNeal maintains its top 50 ranking to date as it continues to pursue better, more advanced ways to care for patients, their hearts, and their overall well-being.

A hundred years of progress. A hundred years of care. While the advanced inpatient and outpatient medical, surgical, psychiatric, diagnostic and treatment services found at MacNeal Hospital today may be far from what Dr. Arthur MacNeal could offer—or could ever imagine—a century earlier, his legacy of compassionate care remains the heart and soul of the hospital that proudly bears his name. “It has always been the people that make the difference here,” says Mary Jo Kron, a 37-year-long hospital employee and team lead in labor and delivery. “We call MacNeal a family, because we treat both patients and coworkers as if they are.” To learn more about MacNeal Hospital, its history, or to find a physician, visit macnealhospital.org.

 Flapjack Brewery Did you know? All of the beer and food served at Flapjack Brewery is made in house! Their beer in particular takes time and talent. It is brewed in double 2.75 barrel batches with a total of 5.5 barrels per fermenter (1 barrel equals 31 gallons). A typical brew day will take 8-10 hours depending on the style of beer brewed. The fermentation process typically takes 2-3 weeks from start to finish. Flapjack Brewery knows you can’t rush perfection! They aren’t just a brewery—they also serve up some of the best wood-fired pizza around! Just like the beer, the pizza is crafted to perfection, too. The pizza dough and ingredients are made fresh every day from scratch and in small batches. The wood-fired oven uses kilned white oak and the temperature inside can reach 800 degrees Fahrenheit. The dough is hand stretched to 11.5” and then baked between 750-800 degrees Fahrenheit and typically takes 120-180 seconds. 6833 W Stanley Ave | Berwyn, IL | (708) 637-4030 | flapjackbrewery.com

 Gina’s Italian Ice It was a hot year in Chicago in 1977, and people needed a delicious way to cool down. Gina purchased a storefront on Roosevelt Road in Berwyn that was set to be a pizza place, but the project was never completed. With a recipe she learned back in Italy, Gina started making Italian ice lemonade by hand and selling scoops in small paper “squeeze” cups for 15 cents each. As word of Gina’s cool and refreshing ice spread around the neighborhood, more flavors were added to the menu. Using the original recipe, each flavor is made daily by hand using fresh fruits bought from local markets. Gina’s remains a staple of Berwyn and will continue to be for a long time. Stop in for a delicious frozen treat and check out their photo wall of visitors, some of whom now bring their kids in years later! 6737 W Roosevelt Rd | Berwyn, IL | (708) 484-0944 | ginasitalianice.com

 Ogden Top & Trim Shop Inc Founded by Frank Nesladek in 1919, Ogden Top & Trim is now in its third generation serving Berwyn and the automotive industry for 100 years and counting. The range of cars that have won major awards with their interiors has shown them to be one of the winningest and diversely capable upholstery shops in the nation. Their Street Rod interiors have won the prestigious Ridler Award and America’s Most Beautiful Roadster, and their restorations have won at Pebble Beach and Amelia Island. In addition, their sports car work has won awards at the Jaguar Nationals and the coveted Platinum Award at Palm Beach’s Cavallino Classic Show for Ferraris. Leading the design and creation team at Ogden Top & Trim is John Mayer. A graduate of the University of Illinois Chicago School of Design, he enjoys every aspect of his work. He often says, “Custom cars let me be creative, and restoration keeps me in line.” Carol Nesladek, owner of Ogden Top & Trim, took on the family business because she wanted the challenge. Carol attributes much of the company’s success to John Mayer, who is a partner of the company. It’s his designs and the shop’s team work that earns awards, and she handles the administrative and business operations of the company. For Carol, the business has always been a central part of her family. Her grandparents founded the business as a store for horse and buggy equipment in 1919, and it has remained a constant operation ever since. They lived right upstairs, and regularly hosted Thanksgiving dinners there. For Carol’s birthday a few years ago, the mayor and City Council gave a portion of East Ave the honorary title of “Nesladek Way” to commemorate the family’s impact on the community. The business continues to be a success to this day. 6609 W Ogden Ave | Berwyn, IL | (708) 484-5422 | ogdentop@gmail.com | ogdentopandtrim.com

 Cigars & Stripes BBQ Lounge For over 20 years, Cigars & Stripes has been an Ogden Ave staple that provides their guests with more than just any other tavern experience. They have a passion for art, nightly entertainment and great beer, and they’re sharing it with the community. Comedy Nights are their specialty as hosts of Chicagoland’s longest up and running “Open Mic Comedy Night” which has happened every Wednesday for over 17 years. Stop in on a Wednesday for some delicious BBQ and lots of laughs! All their BBQ is small batch and made in house from the sauce on up. You may have seen their wings on CNN, featured on Chicago’s Best, the Chicago Tribune, and more! They have 13 craft beers on a rotating tap daily, plus they offer a full selection of premium cigars and a beer garden where you can enjoy them. You’re invited to come visit and enjoy a quality atmosphere, delicious BBQ and spend time with some truly unique individuals. If you love Halloween and Hot Rods, this place is for you. DEVELOPING BERWYN

BDC PHILANTHROPIC GRANT PROGRAM

Berwyn has seen a flurry of economic development activity this spring. The BDC is excited about the progress made in redeveloping the southeast corner of Harlem and Ogden. In addition to the 7-Eleven, Berwyn will also welcome a full service Starbucks to the site. Further north, the BDC is happy to announce the addition of Old Navy to Cermak Plaza. Old Navy will occupy 15,000 square feet adjacent to Tony’s Fresh Market and claims one of the last available retail spaces in a prime gateway to the community. The BDC also helped welcome several new businesses with grand opening celebrations, including Crepas Culichi crepes and coffee (2713 S Ridgeland Ave), Legend Tasty House rolled ice cream (7170 W Cermak Rd), Flight 22 Wine Bar (6518 W Cermak Rd), Cien 100% Naturalisimo vegan restaurant (2709 S Ridgeland Ave), and Slice Factory’s new location, complete with a “Slice-Thru” window (6900 W Ogden Ave).

From left to right: Maribel Crespo (2nd Runner Up), Alexander Soto (1st Place), Cindy Escalera (3rd Runner Up)

Earlier this year, a Berwyn Development Corporation (BDC) philanthropic grant was awarded to the three finalists of the North Berwyn Park District's 2019 Best of Berwyn Junior Citizen Recognition Program. The program recognizes the top 8th grade students in the City of Berwyn based on academics & community involvement. Congratulations to all the winners! For more information on the program, call the BDC at (708) 788-8100.
