Among the multitude of events that we host throughout the year, we invite you to come out to our fabulous Depot District this April and partake in our Annual Mini-Golf Pub Crawl. Each year the holes get crazier and the crowds get bigger, so plan your team accordingly and enjoy the many businesses participating in this great event. With 2017 behind us, we’re looking forward to another amazing year in Berwyn. The 35-year partnership between the Berwyn Development Corporation and the City of Berwyn, along with our robust community, has helped our City achieve record growth in local spending, residential investment and more. We’re excited to share our successes and give the community a glimpse of what’s to come—Buy Berwyn! Since October 2017, we’ve welcomed four new businesses, offering residents and tourists alike new and exciting shopping opportunities. We held three Berwyn’s Best competitions in 2017 and recently wrapped up the first of 2018— Berwyn’s Best Wings! We’re also proud to have presented three philanthropic grants to Lincoln Middle School, Berwyn Arts and Music and Heritage Middle School. 2018 brings two very special anniversaries for both the Berwyn Development Corporation and the City of Berwyn. This year marks 35 years of service for the BDC. Founded in 1983, a group of civic-minded business persons and citizens joined forces to unite the
business building efforts of the City of Berwyn—who is also celebrating a major milestone this year. Founded in 1908, the City of Berwyn is celebrating 110 years on the map! Our momentum has been a result of each generation of residents and business owners maintaining that original vision and sense of cooperation.

BERWYN: A CITY OF INQUIRY
Berwyn Arts & Music (BAM!) was awarded a BDC philanthropic grant for BAMfest 2017 held at Proksa Park in partnership with the Berwyn Park District. The annual festival offers youth of all ages a wide array of engaging learning activities that incorporate different areas of the arts along with entertainment, food and fun.
Lincoln Middle School was awarded a BDC philanthropic grant to help fund the purchase of equipment to support videoenhanced professional development, allowing them to record and reflect on lessons that show teachers engaged in teaching inquiry in social studies. These videos will position Lincoln Middle School to be a model of the new Illinois Standards for Social Science.

VEX ROBOTICS TEAM Heritage Middle School
Heritage Middle School was awarded a BDC philanthropic grant to help fund their robotics team in the VEX Robotics In the Zone 2017-2018 competition in collaboration with schools in the surrounding area. This program helps students recognize and develop their potential to excel in math and science and encourages them to pursue further education and careers in STEM.

The BDC Board of Directors established a Philanthropic Commission to coordinate charitable contributions to causes within the community. The BDC commission gives awards to local organizations, giving priority to those efforts that positively impact economic vitality, provide services directly to beneficiaries, address root problems and serve disenfranchised groups. Berwyn headquartered not-for-profits can apply based upon available BDC funding.

Morton West senior Zaylene Mendoza was awarded a $2,000 scholarship during the 19th Annual High School Exhibition at Elmhurst College. Her winning art piece was a painting inspired by plastic surgery. “My inspiration behind this painting were the people that undergo plastic surgery because they don’t feel comfortable with their body,” Mendoza said. “I also used a blue color scheme for this piece to project the gloomy feeling.” Mendoza plans on pursuing a career in Art Education after graduation. Howard Brown Health will be at the Public Health District the first Monday of each month from 10am-2pm and the first Wednesday of each month from 3-8pm. Confidential screenings include rapid HIV testing, Sexually Transmitted Infections testing, Hepatitis C screenings (recommended for those born between 1946 and 1964) & counseling. These services are FREE. We are partnering with Pav YMCA for a Senior Lecture Series. EDDIE GARCIA HONORED WITH THE 33RD ANNUAL CHARLES E. PIPER AWARD The BDC is proud to present Eddie Garcia with this respected community award to honor his achievements and contributions towards the growth and development of Berwyn’s business community. Each year, the BDC membership selects an individual who best exemplifies the spirit of one of Berwyn’s original developers, Charles E. Piper.
In 2017, Realty of Chicago closed $126 million in sales and has grown to over 80 agents with three offices located throughout the Chicagoland area. Garcia's core beliefs all share the idea of community as a focal point. He believes that "building a successful company is great, but building a successful company that can give back is even greater." Each year, Garcia and Realty of Chicago give back to the communities of Berwyn and Cicero, providing thousands of children with backpacks and school supplies, feeding over 15,000 people on Thanksgiving Day and providing scholarships to high school graduates. Garcia is proud to announce that in 2018, Realty of Chicago will be expanding their community programs to all of their offices throughout the Chicagoland area.
CULVER'S HONORED BY PEERS WITH BUSINESS EXCELLENCE AWARD
Eduardo "Eddie" Garcia was born in Pachuca, Hidalgo and is a graduate of St. Joseph High School. He is a first generation Mexican-American born to proud immigrant parents, Florencia Rosas and Aristeo E. Garcia. The Garcia family migrated from Mexico City to the United States in 1989 when Garcia was only 5 years old. A strong work ethic was instilled in Garcia by his parents at an early age, beginning with his first job at the age of nine. At 21, he attained his Real Estate License, sold his first property six months later and fell in love with the real estate business. In 2012, Garcia founded Realty of Chicago, signing his first agent without an office and from his truck at a time when the market was deteriorating.

Culver's will be recognized as the recipient of the annual George W. Ashby Award for Business Excellence. The award is a local honor named after one of Berwyn’s distinguished early architects. It is given annually to one Berwyn-based business.

Culver’s invests in the community that invests in them, giving back 1% of their total sales through various Berwyn-centric endeavors including community-focused events and fundraisers, providing jobs to residents, donations to local schools—even donating a scoreboard to the Berwyn Park District. They have participated in notable local events like Berwyn’s Oktoberfest, where brand mascot Scoopie makes highly anticipated appearances in the family pavilion. “We were excited to work with the Berwyn Development Corporation because they really helped us become familiar with the community and where to get involved,” said Hollis.
