Under the leadership of Artistic Director Ann Filmer, 16th Street Theater is Berwyn’s first professional, equity theater. It is under the umbrella of the Berwyn Cultural Center, a part of the North Berwyn Park District. The highly acclaimed theater received honors from the Chicago Reader in 2009 for Best Emerging Theater Company and is a finalist for the League of Chicago Theatres’ 2011 Broadway in Chicago Emerging Chicago Theater Award. The space includes a mini theater complete with red velvet curtains and runway lighting. The museum chronicles the history behind Western Electric’s Hawthorne Works plant that manufactured famous inventions from Bell Labs from vacuum tubes to transistors, sound for motion pictures, the loudspeaker, the microphone, the transcontinental phone line, radar and ship-to-shore equipment for the Signal Corps and fiber optics. The Berwyn Historical Society is a non-profit organization whose mission is to preserve, protect and promote the architectural and historic resources in Berwyn through advocacy and education. The group also hosts “Historic Berwyn’s Bungalow Tour – Bungalows and More” annually among other cultural events.
In 1919, the Berwyn Women’s Club built the memorial to honor eleven Berwyn residents who gave their lives in World War I. The site includes a plaque and flag pole and hosts patriotic ceremonies. In 2011, the site was designated a historic landmark.

The Township and Public Health District manages KidCare Assistance and includes the sanitation department; the vital records office; the nursing department, which offers immunizations, inoculations, and screenings for blood pressure, hearing, vision and other diseases; dental education and services for schools; and medical waste disposal services. Additionally, the Assessor’s office assists with applications for homeowner’s exemption, senior exemption, senior freeze, and circuit breakers.

Facts you should know about Berwyn! As a resident of Berwyn, you should be aware of the basic laws and services offered by the City of Berwyn. U.S. Post Office 6625 W Cermak Road 708-484-5392 - usps.com Bicycle Registration No-fee bicycle registration is taken at City Hall. Registration is also filed with the Police Department in case of theft. Curfew Persons under the age of 17 are not allowed to be in public places between 11:30 p.m. and 6:00 a.m. on Friday and Saturday nights and between 10:30 p.m. and 6:00 a.m. on Sunday through Thursday nights. Exceptions are provided for those with a parent or legal guardian and those persons going to or from their place of employment. Dog and Cat Regulations City ordinance limits the number of pets (combination of cats and dogs) to three (3) per building or using the same premises. All
glass bottles and jars, tin cans, magazines, and newspapers. Pick-up is the same day as garbage pick-up. Yard waste, including grass clippings and leaves, may be placed in large brown paper bags, or in your own plastic garbage cans (32 gallons or less in size) identified with a Yard Waste sticker (provided free at City Hall). Yard waste is picked-up from April 1 through December 1. Do not rake leaves into the street as they block storm drain sewers and damage street sweepers. Community Resource Guide Streets are swept every week, weather permitting. On sweep days, vehicles must be vacated between 9:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m., even if the sweeper has passed. Snow Removal For snow emergency information, call 708-788-8220. During snow emergencies, a 60-second wailing siren will sound to alert drivers that a snow emergency exists and vehicles may be ticketed and/or towed if illegally parked. A snow emergency is a three-day cycle of plowing. When 6 or more inches of snow accumulates and an emergency is declared, be sure to read the street sign located on the block in which you are parking to determine if it is a snow route. Residents must also remove vehicles from areas designated a snow route to avoid ticketing or being towed. Berwyn Municipal Parking Facility The parking facility is located south of the Berwyn Metra train station in Berwyn’s Historic Depot District at 3320 S Grove Avenue. Commuters can park on the first four levels with a City of Berwyn Depot commuter permit, which can be obtained at Berwyn’s City Hall. Daily permits can be purchased at the pay stations located on the first floor of the two stairwells for $3.00. The fifth, and top, level is open to the public at an hourly rate of $0.25. Depot Parking Permits Depot parking permits for Metra commuters, employees and residents are sold as annual and quarterly permits on a firstcome, first-served basis at City Hall. Parking areas are located in the Municipal Parking Facility and along Windsor Avenue and Stanley Avenue from Ridgeland Avenue (LaVergne Station) to Harlem Avenue (Harlem Station).
Vacin Fairway Parking Permits The Vacin Fairway is the parking area behind the stores on the north side of Cermak Road. Visitors can park for free for up to two hours. If longer parking is needed, annual permits can be purchased at the Collector’s Office in City Hall. City Speed Limit and General Parking The speed limit is 25 mph unless posted otherwise. Parking is for residents only between 3 a.m.-6 a.m. on all streets unless posted otherwise. Visitors will require a parking pass. Vehicle Tags City ordinance requires that any resident owning a car, motorcycle, truck or bus must obtain a Berwyn vehicle sticker each year. Stickers are renewed annually on June 1 and must be displayed by July 1. Vehicle stickers still valid from another town become invalid when residency is established in Berwyn. New residents must purchase a Berwyn sticker at City Hall or the Police Department Parking Division within thirty (30) days of residency. Visitor Parking Passes Visitor parking passes for designated residential parking zones are available for qualified vehicles. Passes expire on June 30 and must be renewed annually. Visitor Parking Passes may be obtained from the Berwyn Police Department Parking Division, 6401 W 31st Street. Garage Sales A permit is required to have a house, garage or yard sale. Residents are limited to two sales per year. The first permit is free and the second costs $20. Signage rules allow you to have two signs on city parkways, which may be rented with a $10 deposit per sign. Signs can be displayed between 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Sales can be held from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Permits can be obtained at City Hall.
Building Regulations Residents must obtain a permit from the Building Department located in City Hall before proceeding with building repair or remodeling projects. All contractors and subcontractors must be licensed and bonded with the City before permits can be processed. Information is available through the Collector’s Office at 708-788-2660.

Every year the Berwyn Preservation of Historic Route 66 Committee of the BDC hosts the Historic Route 66 Car Show on Ogden Avenue. Berwyn has always been a great Route 66 town with a thriving, dynamic and fast-growing community at its heart. The Route 66 Car Show proves very successful with an estimated crowd of approximately 10,000 residents and visitors each year. The successful two-day event takes place in the Depot District on both sides of the Metra tracks. In addition to record attendance of residents and visitors over the two days, it includes lots of food, live performances, amusement rides, kids' activities, crafters, vendors and a beer garden.

Saturday, 12/10, 5pm-9pm throughout the Depot District On Windsor & Stanley Aves from Harlem to East Aves The community is invited to enjoy horse-drawn sleigh rides, tractor pulled hay rides as well as a trolley traveling throughout the area. Businesses open their doors and offer complimentary refreshments and in-house entertainment, as well as special sales and drawings.

The BDC launched Berwyn’s shop local campaign, Buy Berwyn, in January 2010. The purpose of this Chamber promotion is to build awareness regarding the benefits of shopping local and to encourage support for the local business community. According to research, the 3/50 project has identified that for every $100 spent in independently owned stores, $68 returns to the community through taxes, payroll, and other expenditures while shopping with national chains retains only $43 and online shopping retains nothing! This campaign is not about dramatically changing our shopping habits and shunning national chains. Rather, it is about making an effort to shop local independents when we can.
