President

The

in his own words

Hello Berwyn!

community to identify special promotions that will be available on this day. They will be made available at whyberwyn.com.

“Tis the Season” is upon us…

I

f you’re anything like me, it’s hard to believe that the holiday season is here. I hope you were fortunate enough to enjoy the many wonderful activities offered throughout the summer by the Berwyn Development MAL MONTOYA Corporation. I especially hope President you had a prosperous year and BDC Board of Directors I’m sure that you will share my hope that 2015 will be even better. Before this year ends, however, we’ll look forward to welcoming two new additions to our community: Big Hurt Brewhouse on Cermak Road and Oak Park Avenue and LongHorn Steakhouse in Cermak Plaza. In addition, to help all of Berwyn get in the holiday spirit, the BDC is proud to sponsor three great events, starting with “Small Business Saturday” on November 29. We ask that all of Berwyn come out and “shop small” at our many fine brick-and-mortar retail shops and restaurants. The BDC plans to become a “Neighborhood Champion” this year, and we’ll be working with the business

On December 6, come out and enjoy “Light the Veltway” from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m. on Roosevelt Road. Those in attendance will see Roosevelt Road lit up with spectacular festive colors. Let us not forget to attend the always-joyous Deck the Depot on December 13 from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. As in previous years, the entire family will be treated to many holiday activities including a visit from Santa and his reindeer. And lastly, it is my great pleasure to congratulate fellow BDC Board Director Richard “Jousef” Mondragon as the 30th Annual Charles E. Piper Award recipient. The award ceremony featured a masquerade theme with murder mystery dinner, raffle and a silent auction fundraiser. For more information on these and any other activities sponsored by the BDC please call 708-788-8100 or visit our event calendar at Berwyn.net. Respectfully, Mal Montoya President, Board of Directors

More Development on the Way at Cermak Road and Harlem Avenue The developers of Berwyn Gateway Plaza, the award winning project at the northeast corner of Cermak Road and Harlem Avenue, have recently been approved to move forward with the second phase of the development. will act as the development team. The first phase of the development brought several national retailers, including Buffalo Wild Wings, Chipotle Mexican Grill, Verizon Wireless, Five Guys Burgers and Fries, Play N Trade and The Vitamin Shoppe. The target for completion of the project’s second phase of construction is the first quarter of 2016. Attracting popular quick-casual restaurants and top-quality retailers to Berwyn has been one of the BDC’s primary objectives in recent years, and Berwyn Gateway Plaza is proof positive that the City is a magnet for new commercial development.

Site Plan for Phase II

The block between Maple Avenue and Wisconsin Avenue on the north side of Cermak Road will be transformed into 16,453 sq. ft. of new commercial space. Berwyn Gateway Partners, a team comprised of Keystone Ventures, J&P Properties, Bern Realty and Hague Architecture,

The second phase of Berwyn Gateway Plaza is one of two major projects in the new Harlem Tax Increment Financing (TIF) District, which was created in 2012. The other project is the final phase of the Cermak Plaza redevelopment (see page 12). Tax increment financing (TIF) is among the chief economic development tools available to Berwyn.

mall Business Saturday was established four years ago as a counter to the big box bargains on Black Friday and the online sales on Cyber Monday. Observed the first Saturday after Thanksgiving, this American shopping holiday encourages patronizing small brick-and-mortar businesses. But why is this important? According to research, for every $100 spent in independent owned stores, $68 stays in the community. The backbone of Berwyn, these local businesses bring a unique flavor and vibrancy to our business districts. This year, the BDC developed a city-wide platform for Berwyn businesses to announce their sales and promotions to shoppers on WhyBerwyn.com. Logon and be sure to #ShopSmall Save the Date on

The contest includes two simple rounds. In Round 1, the public was asked to take 13 of Berwyn’s local taco spots and narrow that list down to the top five, showcased above. In Round 2, the top five restaurants identified their specialty taco. A group of local judges will compare each taco side-by-side based on flavor, texture and presentation at a taste-test event. Their scores along with another public vote will crown one taco as “Berwyn’s Best.” Check WhyBerwyn.com to find the victor later in November or to learn more about the contest. “Berwyn’s Best” is a new promotional program managed by the BDC. Look for additional Berwyn’s Best programming to sample all of the great and diverse cuisine in our community.

Partners in our COMMUNITY bsd100.org BERWYN SCHOOL DISTRICT 100 Illinois is changing the way we test students in K -12. The Common Core State Standards (CCSS) are academic standards for students in grades K-12 in English language arts/ literacy and mathematics. In comparison to the previous Illinois standards, the CCSS are designed to focus on fewer standards at each grade level and require students to develop a deeper understanding of content. Student expectations for academic achievement are high and the goal is to better prepare students for college and future careers. Students will be assessed on the CCSS standards using the Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers (PARCC). This computerbased assessment will be administered in the spring of 2015 to all students in third through eighth grade and will replace Illinois’ previous ISAT test. Students will be asked to show their work, explain their thinking, and demonstrate critical-thinking and problem-solving skills in reading and math.
