The

in his own words

Hello Berwyn!

E

ach year community and business leaders that make up the Berwyn Development Corporation (BDC) Board, in conjunction with a very dedicated BDC staff, set out to deliver on ambitious but measured economic development and chamber services plans for the betterment of our residential and business communities. Through the BDC, we are directly involved a multitude of special events, marketing, and economic development endeavors that strengthen the fabric of our great city. We simply wouldn’t have the success we have without the countless contributions everyday by those who work, volunteer and live in Berwyn. As such, I hope to see you at one of our events soon, and thank you personally. There will be plenty of opportunities to do so. For example, the BDC is joining forces with Berwyn Main Street to bring Taste of Main Street to Cermak Road on August 27. A trolley will shuttle guests from Harlem to Lombard Avenues between 5pm and 9pm. Two days later you can join us for the 25th Annual Berwyn Rt 66 Car Show. This unique car show draws more than 30,000 visitors to Ogden Avenue between Ridgeland and Oak Park Avenues. Or, save the dates for September 18-19 and make the trip to the Depot District for Berwyn’s Oktoberfest, the western suburbs’ biggest party of the year. Ok, so you need one more opportunity? How about the

6th annual Zombie Walk & Pub Crawl on Saturday, October 24. Information on these events can be found at whyberwyn.com. The new website, along with the new Why Berwyn? billboards are elements of our recently launched Integrated Marketing Campaign. Please join me in congratulating our team for their magnificent work. On the economic development front, the City of Berwyn and the BDC are proud to announce that six renovation projects received the Chicago Association of REALTORS® 2015 Good Neighbor Awards. The Berwyn properties that were recognized for offering unique facilities and amenities were: Familia Fresh Market, Old Fashioned Candies, Masa Uno, Inc. Tortilleria, Big Hurt Brewhouse, Oak Street Health, and Cermak Plaza. Congratulations, one and all! And finally, let’s also congratulate the mother and son team of Gina and Patrick Tremonte of Gina’s Italian Ice as they’ve been voted Berwyn’s Best Frozen Dessert. Previous recipients of Berwyn’s Best designations have been bestowed upon Paisans Pizzeria and Bar for best pizza and Tacos Y Salsa for best taco. Mal Montoya

City of Berwyn's Fresh Face The City of Berwyn and the Berwyn Development Corporation (BDC) are pleased to announce the launch of the City of Berwyn’s 2015 Integrated Marketing Campaign Billboard: LaSalle and Ontario location.

T

he City of Berwyn launched an Integrated Marketing Campaign in 2007 in order to differentiate the City of Berwyn from the many suburbs of Chicago. In 2014, our team undertook a year of research to refresh Berwyn’s look and brand to reflect our community’s rich history and forward momentum. On June 1, 2015, the City of Berwyn and the Berwyn Development

Just eight miles from Chicago’s Loop, Berwyn is a destination that caters to urban dwellers, entrepreneurs and families alike. Corporation (BDC) launched a refreshed face for the campaign with a new tagline, “Nothing Like a Suburb.” Three billboard designs are adorning the streets of Chicago and select CTA “el” platforms. The 2015 campaign runs from June through September and includes billboards in Chicago neighborhoods, posters on CTA el platforms, direct-to-consumer outreach through special events and social media engagement. A newly revamped, responsively designed WhyBerwyn.com blog provides visitors with a stream of information on the area’s real estate, businesses, schools, parks and recreation, cultural hot spots and special events.

ocally, Berwyn's new branding can be seen on street pole banners in our commercial corridors and on Buy Berwyn signage displayed by our local businesses.

Berwyn is positioned as a top-choice destination for move-up and first-time homebuyers. We believe that Berwyn cannot be blended into suburbia because it is a thriving, self-made city defined by our local pride, accessible nightlife and warm, welcoming attitude. Street Pole Banners: Advertise 24-hours-a-day in our commercial corridors. Contact: Gerardo Zavala at 708.788.8100 or gerardoz@ berwyn.net to reserve your space.

The objective is to create a driving desire in our audience to visit and live in Berwyn.

Buy Berwyn Poster: Local businesses display signage to encourage shopping locally. This happens through increasing awareness of our local offerings that people respond well to, namely our nightlife and events, bungalows and architecture, progressive policies, independent businesses, location and affordability. Berwyn Gateway Plaza Phase II

Grand Openings Be among the first to know about business openings. Follow us on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram @WhyBerwyn

Development continues at the intersection of Cermak Road and Harlem Avenue with the second phase of the Berwyn Gateway Plaza. Demolition of the block between Maple Avenue and Wisconsin Avenue started this spring with the first building constructed in June. The first phase, completed in 2012, brought several national tenants to Berwyn including Buffalo Wild Wings, Chipotle, and Five Guys Burgers & Fries. This next phase will continue that trend by adding national tenants including Berwyn’s first Starbucks and Noodles & Company. The second phase of redevelopment at Berwyn Gateway Plaza is a complete renovation of the commercial block on the north side of Cermak Road. The completion of this phase of redevelopment will create an additional 16,453 sq. ft. of new retail property within the City of Berwyn, adding new tax revenue and creating jobs at this increasingly popular intersection of town.

EDUCATION bn98.org BERWYN NORTH SCHOOL DIST. 98 Lunch Time! Principals and Assistant Principals selected numerous students across all four schools, from each grade level, to be a part of District 98’s Inaugural Nutritional Forum as Student Ambassadors. Over the course of several weeks, these Ambassadors surveyed students in their grade level to gather feedback and opinions about the school lunches that are provided. On May 21 these students met with District employees and representatives from the food service company to share the opinions from their peers. The goal was to involve students in decisions that affect them and to show the students that their opinion matters in District 98 as we work towards improving the food they eat every day at school. This opportunity embraces our mission for students and provides an opportunity for them to demonstrate their personal, academic and civic potential. We are proud of the student’s leadership roles and dedication to this opportunity. bsd100.org BERWYN SCHOOL DIST. 100 Berwyn South School Dist. 100 and the Berwyn Park District will be hosting the 6th Annual Back to School Picnic on Sunday, Aug. 23 from Noon to 3 p.m. at Proksa Park. This growing, one-day event will kick-off the 2015-2016 District 100 school year, which begins on Monday, August 24. The picnic will feature school supply giveaways, games, prizes, entertainment, food vendors, information booths and the opportunity to meet and mingle with other students, parents, and District 100 teachers and staff. This past academic school year was the first full year of 1:1 computing at our district. Over 381 interactive whiteboards and projectors were installed in classrooms district wide and over 2,075 laptops were given to incoming freshmen. This year Mustangs district wide were

accepted to over 162 colleges and universities across the nation. Our students have committed to some of the best schools both near and far such as Northwestern, Harvard and New York University. We wish all of our Mustangs the best of luck in college. Our Varsity and Junior Rugby teams went to the Illinois Rugby State Championship and won their third state title since 2007.
