2018 WHY BERWYN? CAMPAIGN IS IN FULL SWING The City of Berwyn and the Berwyn Development Corporation (BDC) are pleased to announce the launch of the City of Berwyn’s 2018 Integrated Marketing Campaign. The campaign’s objective is to pique the curiosity of Chicago area residents and to create a driving desire to visit and live in Berwyn. Since 2007, the City of Berwyn has actively promoted its rich history and forward momentum. Last year, the campaign was showcased as a best practice in the Homes for a Changing Region Toolkit, which was created by the Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning (CMAP), Metropolitan Mayors Caucus and Metropolitan Planning Council. The toolkit is an online guide to help communities plan for their current and future residents. Berwyn was selected as a case study due to our success in stimulating investment and building brand awareness for the community. The campaign recently received a nod from the Chicago Tribune. The 2018 campaign continues its storytelling under the “Nothing Like A Suburb” tagline that has been used for the past four years. This year’s messaging carries over from 2017 and reflects Berwyn’s core values and assets—our individuality, genuine community and unabashed selfawareness. Outdoor advertising and social media will again focus on two themes, Full of Character(s) and Handcrafted Community. This year, the BDC collaborated with local photographer Joel Gonzalez of WeOurStory to capture the campaign images. Each theme highlights specific local “characters” to help illustrate our message. Our characters – whether they are homegrown or have seen Berwyn as a beacon for their craft – have made an impact on our cultural landscape. The subjects of our ads are: • Chef and Berwyn business owner Ambrocio Gonzalez of Las Quecas Berwyn, which serves unique quick-bite fare with a special focus on quesadillas;

• Chef, Berwyn resident and business owner Brendan O’Connor of Big Guys Sausage Stand, serving home to house made sausages, fresh-cut fries, burgers and amazing catering services; • Berwyn resident and artist Naomi Martinez (also known as Monstrochika), creator of mixed media artwork, zines, dolls and more; and • Berwyn resident and musician Kara Kesselring, who has provided keys for Jersey Boys, acted as Music Director for Broadway in Chicago’s A Taste of Things to Come and recently performed with local artists Tributosaurus. Mayor Robert J. Lovero welcomes all with open arms, stating, “The City of Berwyn’s location, coupled with its unique establishments, beautiful housing stock and dedicated residents and business owners set us apart from other communities. Our City is full of character and home to hardworking, creative people. We don’t just accept diversity—we actively welcome it. A BDC philanthropic grant was awarded to the three finalists of the North Berwyn Park District’s 2018 Best of Berwyn Junior Citizen Recognition Program. The program recognizes the top 8th grade students in the City of Berwyn. Nominated by educators, community leaders and elected officials, the students are individually interviewed and go through a judging process that narrows the candidates down to three winners. The Best of Berwyn program recognizes the students in the area based not only on academics but also on participation in the community.

Lincoln Middle School Choir The Lincoln Middle School Choir was awarded a philanthropic grant from the BDC to help fund their choir trip to the America Sings! Music Festival in Washington, DC. The children spent a weekend performing music, hearing choirs from around the country, making sandwiches for homeless shelters and preparing school supply backpacks for needy children. To conclude the festival, the participants gathered for a Massed-Choir Finale Celebration.

The West Suburban Special Recreation Association Lekotek Therapeutic Toy Lending Library was awarded a philanthropic grant from the BDC. BDC WELCOMES DAVE HULSEBERG AS NEW EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
The BDC is pleased to announce that Dave Hulseberg has joined their team as the new Executive Director. For the past 4 years, Dave held the role of President and CEO of Invest Aurora, a not-for-profit economic development partnership with the City of Aurora. Prior to his work with Invest Aurora, Dave acted in a myriad of roles with the Village of Lombard, from Director of Community Development to Village Manager. He has also worked with the Village of Mount Prospect, the Village of Arlington Heights and the Town of Millbury in Massachusetts. Dave brings a vast set of skills and industry knowledge to the BDC, including urban planning, public safety, strategic planning, public administration and more. He holds a Bachelors of Science in Urban and Regional Planning from Westfield State University and a Masters Degree in Public Administration from Northern Illinois University. TONY’S FINER FOODS FRESH MARKET TO OPEN IN BERWYN On March 20, 2018, Berwyn’s City Council unanimously approved a redevelopment agreement with regional full-service grocery chain Tony’s Finer Foods Fresh Market to anchor its iconic Cermak Plaza located at the intersection of Cermak Road and Harlem Avenue. Tony’s currently has 15 locations in the Chicagoland area and will fill the space that was left vacant when Meijer abruptly closed its urban marketplace concept last June. Berwyn Development Corporation (BDC) Board President Andy Sotiropoulos stated, “Cermak Plaza has come full circle in the past few years and is a key economic asset to the City of Berwyn. We are ecstatic about the progress to bring this anchor space back online.” After Meijer’s departure, Tony’s Finer Foods initiated contact with Cermak Plaza and Meijer and began due diligence. Once the lease agreement was reached between the Plaza and Tony’s, the City of Berwyn and the BDC worked with both parties to finalize the redevelopment agreement. The project includes subdividing approximately 91,000 sf of inline space formerly taken by Meijer into a 71,500 sf space for Tony’s. The grocer anticipates that they will be open by the end of the summer. The remaining 19,500 sf of retail space is being actively marketed for lease. Tony’s Finer Foods Fresh Market is a privately owned and operated regional grocery chain stationed throughout the Chicago area. Founded in 1979 as a 9,000 sf small scale supermarket, Tony’s has grown to 15 locations ranging in size from 30,000-70,000 sf. The family-owned chain prides itself on its low prices and quality products, including a wide variety of international items that support area residents’ ethnic traditions. The stores focus largely on fresh produce, meats and other groceries but strive for a one-stop-shopping experience, offering bakery, floral, deli with cheese and olive bar, salad bar, sushi bar, juice bar and Lavazza Café. Cermak Plaza began its revitalization efforts in 2008 with environmentally-focused improvements to the shopping center’s parking lot, which included new pavement, solar-powered LED lighting, wind turbines, landscaping, the installation of traffic calming features and relocation of Walgreens into an outlot. Phase II commenced in 2010 and included an exterior facelift along with demolition and new construction of inline retail space. The third and final phase included additional construction of inline space and the development of outlots that added an additional 7% of space to the largest retail property in the City of Berwyn. Through an aggressive tenant recruitment strategy led by the City of Berwyn and the BDC, the resulting public-private partnership helped to secure new retailers such as K&G Fashion Superstore, The Avenue, Ross, LongHorn Steakhouse and former anchor tenant Meijer.
