The

in his own words

I

t is difficult to believe that the end of 2016 is upon us. This year was filled with a tremendous amount of activity and success. It is with great pride that the Berwyn Development Corporation (BDC) facilitated the grand opening of Home Run Inn Pizzeria, the featured business of this publication and perennial favorite among local pizza lovers. Additionally, MacNeal Hospital continues to be Berwyn’s largest economic engine and employer. Providing over 2,600 jobs and holding multiple accreditations for various medical achievements, MacNeal Hospital continues to be a staunch community investor. 2016 was also a banner year for events in each of our corridors. Ogden Avenue hosted the 26th Annual Berwyn Route 66 Car Show, which showcased over 450 cars and garnered the attendance of over 12,000 car enthusiasts from the local, regional and national scene. In its 16th year, Oktoberfest experienced its best year ever in our Depot District. Fifteen thousand festival goers enjoyed our eclectic food options and unique arts & crafts vendors while being entertained by a variety of popular live musical acts. The 5th Annual Taste of Main Street on Cermak Road featured 13 restaurants and bars each offering their unique blend of culinary expertise. And finally, Roosevelt Road provided the venue for the 7th Annual Zombie Walk & Pub Crawl, which rounded out the year’s events by introducing several new businesses to a substantially greater number of local and visiting Zombie aficionados. In the last issue, I made reference to the BDC’s commitment to continue to explore and execute innovative measures that showcase Berwyn as a pinnacle for progress and tradition. In this spirit and with pride, I share that our Philanthropic Commission

JOUSEF MONDRAGON President BDC Board of Directors was able to award financial support to the youth leadership at Youth Crossroads to produce the documentary film “Finding Our Way,” which focuses on teen depression and anxiety. Specific to programming for business retention, Chamber Services developed the BDC Talks Power Breakfast, which was a forum for property owners and commercial tenants aimed at providing local business owners with resources to better understand the Cook County property tax process as well as managing expectations with commercial leases. In closing, as we enter into the merriment of the holiday season, the BDC encourages you to “Buy Berwyn.” As part of your shopping experience, consider patronizing Berwyn’s Best Cocktail winner, Lavergne’s Tavern and enjoy their winning Cucumber Mojito. Other notable rest stops include Olive Or Twist Martini Bar, Godson’s Bar & Lounge, P Lounge and The James Joyce Irish Pub. Best Wishes For A Season Filled With Health & Prosperity! amily-owned and operated Chicago pizzeria Home Run Inn celebrated the opening of its ninth location on August 29. The leader in Chicago’s authentic thin crust pizza recently rolled out an overall brand refresh, including a modernized logo, website, restaurant storefronts, in-restaurant and marketing materials and frozen pizza boxes. The Berwyn restaurant presents the fresh, new look throughout the venue. Home Run Inn, Inc. is a family owned and operated pizzeria based in Woodridge, Illinois boasting a deep-rooted connection in the Chicagoland area. Home Run Inn’s story began at a small corner tavern on the South Side of Chicago in the 1940s with Mary Grittani and her son-in-law Nick Perrino serving homemade pizzas for free to their patrons. Home Run Inn pizzas are made from an original family recipe created in 1947. One of Chicago’s oldest pizzerias, Home Run Inn pizzas are baked using all-natural ingredients with no preservatives Today, Home Run Inn has expanded to nine Chicagoland locations and offers family dining and banquet facilities, carry out, catering and delivery for large orders across the Chicagoland area. Home Run Inn was among the first companies to expand into the frozen pizza business and offers the same delicious taste of Chicago to grocery stores in more than 40 states

MacNeal Hospital Caring for the Health of the Community and the Local Economy

F

ew businesses are as vital to a community’s health and well-being as the local hospital. Not only do hospitals provide essential medical services, they stimulate the economic growth of their local communities, provide charity care and are often the community’s largest employer. With more than 200 hospitals and 50 health systems in Illinois, it’s not surprising that 1 in 10 jobs are in health care; in fact, Illinois hospitals and health systems employ more than 260,000 people, generating more than 500,000 direct and indirect jobs and $88.8 billion in economic impact.

hospital in the 10-room frame residence of founder Dr. Arthur MacNeal a century ago has evolved into a nationally recognized 371-bed facility that offers the latest diagnostic and treatment options administered by hundreds of highly trained, compassionate health care professionals.

A Local Economic Engine for Jobs

Locally, MacNeal Hospital in Berwyn not only delivers on its promise to provide lifesaving and life-enhancing health care to the communities it serves, it also plays a vital economic role as a major employer and partner in community development. Since its founding in 1919, MacNeal has had a positive impact on generations of area residents. And as the local community grows, MacNeal continues to expand its scope of care and nurture the strong relationships it has built over the years. What began as a tiny PAGE

While the mission at MacNeal focuses on providing quality care, a welcome side effect is jobs creation. According to the Illinois Hospital Association, the seven hospitals within Congressional District 4, including MacNeal, create a combined ripple effect generating more than $1.4 billion for the state’s economy. Spending includes payroll, other goods and services, and capital projects. Locally, MacNeal employs more than 2,000 individuals and has a medical staff of more than 600 physicians. For every dollar that hospitals like MacNeal spend, an additional $1.41 is generated in spending in state and local economies. And for every job at MacNeal, nearly 1.5 jobs are created in other sectors.

Borrowing Tips from

A

Home Equity Line of Credit, or HELOC, may be a good option for college tuition and home improvement expenses. Your Home is Your Collateral. The most important thing to understand about a HELOC is that it uses your home as collateral. Therefore if you default on this line of credit, your home may be at risk. At the same time, because your home is used as collateral, you’ll have the option to borrow more for larger items, such as home improvements and college costs among other things.

Flexible Spending with a Line of Credit. A HELOC is a line of credit, meaning that you will have a credit limit given to you based on the equity available in your home along with other underwriting criteria. Possible Tax Deduction. A HELOC is one of the few credit options available where you may be able to deduct the interest you pay on your taxes. It is important that you check with your tax advisor as to whether or not you qualify for this benefit. Talk to your banker for details, and to see if a HELOC is right for you.

BDC aims to make impact through charitable giving Teen Leaders Awarded BDC Philanthropic Grant

The Berwyn Development Corporation (BDC) awarded a philanthropic grant to Youth Crossroads, Inc. to support a social media project with their Youth Leadership Program (YLP). A year in the making, the YLP team chose to make a film focusing on teen depression and anxiety in order to provide greater awareness of important social issues and the value of youth to the local community. They premiered their first documentary film “Finding Our Way, The Struggle with Anxiety and Depression in Urban Youth” on Aug 26 at the Berwyn Park District’s Liberty Cultural Center. New Store Openings Close Out Major Redevelopments on Cermak Road The Berwyn Development Corporation (BDC) is committed to those activities that support and contribute to the economic growth and vitality of our proud City. Berwyn Gateway Plaza

Cermak Road & Oak Park Avenue

The Berwyn Gateway Plaza redevelopment project at Harlem Ave and Cermak Rd continues to bring new store openings and construction. We completed Starbucks in late 2015, welcomed Blaze Pizza in August and demolished the old Fifth Third Bank building after relocating them to make way for the center building of the development. Leasing activity continues for this building with more store openings expected in early spring to complete this 2nd phase.

We also closed out another redevelopment project this past August. Home Run Inn finished their construction at Cermak Rd & Grove Ave, which was the 2nd phase of development for this commercial block. They joined Big Hurt Brewhouse, which was a historic rehabilitation project of the former American State Bank building.

With the success of these first two phases of development and additional retailer demand, the City is working on an additional phase for this development. The third phase is currently in the planning stage and would add another 9,000 square feet of new retail stores.

Cermak Plaza Cermak Plaza recently opened an additional retail store, Avenue. The Plaza went through a major renovation project starting in 2010 to make way for Meijer Marketplace and with this recent opening, closes out the full redevelopment of Berwyn’s largest commercial property. The center is now 100% occupied for the first time in several decades.

Spring is around the corner and so are the heavy rains. If you have flooded in the past, you most likely will again. Morning Noon & Night Plumbing & Sewer can help you with your water issues.

School District 100 is excited to kick off another school year and our staff is already working to create partnerships with our families and community to support the children of South Berwyn. For the past several months, District 100 staff have been participating in a district improvement process to identify common goals for students and staff across all eight schools. The process began with a thorough analysis of data that included demographics, academic performance, program availability and usage, parent engagement, and school culture by a group of teachers, social workers, instructional coaches, administrators, parents, and board members. The team has identified goals for increasing student achievement in literacy, math, and language acquisition and for improving both internal and external communication. We remain committed to educating the whole child by providing social-emotional supports, health and wellness programs, PBIS, and a variety of extra-curricular opportunities. We are focused on improvement. Visit us: www.bsd100.org. morton201.org MORTON WEST HIGH SCHOOL

Partners in our community Under the instruction of Advanced Placement (AP) teacher Elizabeth Mendoza, the school saw a 100 percent pass rate among AP Spanish Exam takers for two consecutive years. The positive results translated to more AP Spanish Language students earning college credit at any public college or university. This past July, Elizabeth joined other district officials at the College Board’s Annual AP Conference, where the school district received a 2016 AP District of the Year Award. The awardee will represent Illinois at NASA Space Camp in Huntsville, Ala., and in the Council of Chief State School Officers’ National Teacher of the Year Program. It’s an extraordinary time at Morton College! That’s because

each day presents a new opportunity to make a difference in the lives of our students and open doors of opportunity for each of them. This incredible responsibility leaves no room for complacency. We continue to invest in our students, staff, facilities and community. Whether that means adding classrooms in a new campus addition, strengthening relationships with our communities, or introducing technology to streamline student communication with professors, we’re committed to continually improving what we do. Those efforts exemplify the heart of our mission: to enhance the diverse community we serve through highquality teaching and learning opportunities. It’s important we encourage lifelong learning, no matter when students enroll. It’s up to us to provide them with the tools they need to succeed and continue learning well after they turn their tassels. It’s a new day, full of new possibilities for everyone in the Morton College family. We welcome you to join us.
