President’s Column Believe the Buzz! Berwyn is a great place. My business has flourished here for over 35 years, largely because of the strength and excellent character of Berwyn’s citizens, the cooperative attitude of the city, and the safe and stable environment in the community. But most importantly, Berwyn has continually taken steps to renew, rebuild and grow. Some Jon Fey 29 years ago, Berwyn created SWF Products the BDC, with the mission to Berwyn Rt 66 Museum “support and contribute to the economic growth and vitality of our proud City.” Over time, with the determined spirit of Berwyn’s founders, we have worked together to become very effective at creating the economic growth and vitality that our mission demands. And today, in the harshest of economic times, we are the envy of communities throughout the area for our ability to attract new businesses, creatively rebuild and reuse our infrastructure and increase economic opportunities. Most recently, Mayor Robert Lovero and BDC Executive Director, Tony Griffin, will go to Washington DC to receive a national award for the Berwyn Gateway Project at Harlem

As we transition into the second half of the year, the Route 66 Car Show on September 8 marks the beginning of fall events season in Berwyn. The Car Show is big, colorful and full of great cars and people. For some extra fun, get there around 7 am to watch the hot rods and classic cars as they enter the show at Ogden (Route 66) and Oak Park Ave. Spectator admission is always free. My personal favorite fall event is Oktoberfest in the Depot District. The event serves up lots of live music, food and of course a beer garden. There’s plenty for the family to enjoy with kid’s activities, amusement rides, crafters, and vendors. This 2-day event takes place on September 14 and 15. Look for me in the beer garden, introduce yourself, and I’ll buy you a refreshment. There are so many gratifying ways to participate in this community. Join us in writing the next chapter of Berwyn’s economic and cultural future. If you are a business owner, our BDC ambassadors may have recently stopped by your office or store. They are inviting you to share in the economic success that has become so much of what Berwyn is today. Join the BDC, participate in the growth of your business and the growth of the whole community.

New Additions in Berwyn’s Growth Meijer Marketplace will have fresh groceries and more! he new Meijer Marketplace will soon make its longanticipated debut in the Cermak Plaza Shopping Center at the intersection of Cermak Road and Harlem Avenue. The Berwyn location will be one of the chain’s new smaller-format stores, approximately 96,000 square feet, about half the size of their traditional stores. Meijer Marketplace is designed as a “mini” supercenter concept, providing customers with a tailored grocery offering along with a limited variety of general merchandise items. While there will be a focus on a fresh grocery selection, Meijer Marketplace will offer general merchandise including electronics, seasonal items, toys, sporting goods and a pet department. The selection will evolve based on customer needs and feedback. Head out to the “Meijer Marketplace Summer Picnic” on Saturday, August 11 between 11:00 am & 2:00 pm for the pre-opening celebration in the parking lot of Meijer Marketplace. There will be fun, family-friendly entertainment including food, face painting, games and activities, prizes and the Meijer Mobile Playground!
Berwyn City Council approved a redevelopment agreement with Meijer in January 2010. The new grocer helps put the finishing touches on Cermak Plaza’s recent revitalization, which included a façade replacement and installation of colored LED lighting, restored pole signs, and an overhauled parking lot with added landscaping, lighting and wind turbines.
Forest Park National Bank joins the BDC’s Commercial Loan Program The BDC is happy to announce that Forest Park National Bank has joined its Commercial Loan Program. The commercial loan program is operated in conjunction with the City of Berwyn to retain and improve existing businesses and to encourage new business projects. The program can be accessed by Berwyn businesses for any business related expense such as façade improvements, interior build-out, equipment and working capital. Forest Park National Bank is now part of a pool of seven banks, including AztecAmerica Bank; Citizens Community Bank, a branch of Metrobank; Community Bank of Oak Park River Forest; BMO Harris Bank; MB Financial Bank and Pan American Bank.

More Growth on the Horizon Riddles Comedy Club 6910 W Windsor Avenue Riddles Comedy Club and Depot District Development LLC have received TIF funds for redevelopment work on a 6,812 sq. ft. vacant commercial space. The TIF scope of work includes, but is not limited to, demolition, plumbing, electrical, HVAC, carpentry, front faรงade, fire sprinkler and system, insulation, flooring, millwork, architectural design, and signage. The redevelopment will result in a new entertainment venue occupied by Riddles Comedy Club. Riddles has operated another club in Alsip since 1990. Riddles hosts national and local comedians with shows on Friday and Saturday nights as well as open mic nights throughout the week. The project will create 15 temporary construction jobs and 10 full time positions. Additionally, the concept could bring over 640 consumers to the Depot District for their Friday and Saturday shows. The business anticipates an opening in the Fall.

Depot District Pocket Park
The Depot District will soon have a burst of new green space this Fall. The City of Berwyn purchased the land at Windsor and Kenilworth Avenues in 2011. This long vacant piece of property was cleaned and planted with sod, before being approved for construction of a new pocket park at the June 12 City Council meeting. The new 2,825 square foot park, designed by the Lakota Group, will
feature landscaping, seating areas, lighting and electrical outlets for use during special events. An intergovernmental agreement has been signed with the Berwyn Park District for maintenance and upkeep.

South Berwyn School District 100
School has ended for South Berwyn children but we continue to prepare for summer programs and the coming school year. Classes will resume on August 21. Registration for next year will be held on August 10 from 7 am until 1 pm and on August 13 from 1 pm until 6 pm. District 100 is proud to announce that we received official notification that six of our schools received the Gold with Distinction award in the USDA’s HealthierUS School Challenge (HUSSC). With only 10 schools in the State of Illinois receiving this level of recognition, we are honored to put Berwyn on the map. Two District 100 schools previously received notification of the Silver level of recognition, bringing the statewide silver total to 19. Congratulations to the staff and students for taking the challenge and concentrating on health and wellness. Our preliminary ISAT (Illinois Standard Achievement Test) reports indicate significant progress district wide. Our students are focused and continue to exceed! Congratulations! Berwyn North School District 98 would like to welcome our new Superintendent, Dr. Carmen I. Ayala to the district. We are honored and privileged to have her as our new leader. Historic Bank Building Looks to Transform into World of Beer City Council approved a redevelopment agreement with Imagine Properties to open a World of Beer franchise in the historic bank building at Cermak Road and Oak Park Avenue. At World of Beer, having the most extensive beer selection is not enough. It is important that a broad spectrum of patrons, from the beer aficionado to the casual beer fan, can enjoy the best beers on the planet and increase their beer knowledge in a comfortable and upbeat setting. By combining a friendly environment with an exceptionally knowledgeable staff, World of Beer creates an atmosphere where patrons feel at home, as if they are visiting a neighbor and not just a neighborhood bar. Imagine Properties is based in the Chicago metro area, operates Tilted Kilt, Giordano’s, and World of Beer, and serves as the area developer for Ground Burger and Bonehead Grill. They are bringing forward a plan for adaptive re-use of the bank building using a local architect and a vision that celebrates the historic architecture of the building. The development team is working on financing and construction documents, which will allow them to start the construction project later in the year. While there are still hurdles to achieve the project, it remains a top priority for development.

Comprehensive Plan will set bold new course for the community
The Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning (CMAP) recently hosted an open house for Berwyn community stakeholders to give comment on the draft comprehensive plan. This planning process has explored topics such as future land use; community facilities; transportation, park, and capital improvements; and arts and culture throughout the entire City. The draft comprehensive plan is a culmination of approximately one year of planning, research and public outreach. The June 27 open house marked the third phase of public engagement. With no formal presentation during this open house, nearly 40 attendees – including elected officials, residents, and business owners – “dropped in“ to review and comment on the plan's draft recommendations. Adoption of the plan is currently anticipated to take place in late summer. More information on the plan and process can be found on CMAP’s website at www.cmap.illinois.gov/berwyn.
