individuals and look forward to an exciting and productive future. As we move ahead, our goals and objectives for 2012 fall into three main areas: Business Attraction, Business Retention and BDC Operations. In the Business Attraction area, we will ensure that the City’s newest and largest retailer, Meijer, continues its construction at Cermak Plaza that will lead to a planned opening in the 3rd quarter of this year. This new store will fill a space that has been vacant for a little over 10 years. Nearby at the northeast corner of Harlem and Cermak, we will work to finish the construction of this highly visible public private redevelopment project. Additionally, the BDC remains committed to the attraction of vibrant businesses through the redevelopment of properties throughout the city. The BDC will continue to devote energy and resources to enhance and retain the over 900 businesses that are already here. We will expand our shop local program, Buy Berwyn, by encouraging Berwyn residents to shop at their local stores and businesses, so that money made here, stays here. We will expand the Berwyn Integrated Marketing campaign, which promotes Berwyn to the entire Chicago area through the latest in mobile and social media technology.

Potential Dealership for Ogden J.D. Byrider looks to move forward

erwyn’s Historic US Route 66 may be welcoming a new car dealership this year. At the City Council meeting on January 24, the City of Berwyn authorized Harold Zeigler Automotive Group, Inc. to proceed to the due diligence phase in its plans to own and operate a J.D. Byrider franchise unit at the northern site of the former Anderson Ford dealership. J.D. Byrider is the nation’s largest franchised used car sales and finance business. By late spring, the dealership will determine if appropriate financing will be secured. If the development proceeds, it will result in the creation of thirty new jobs and will generate sales tax that is comparable to a new car dealership. In addition to filling a vacancy, the property would see substantial investment to bring it up to J.D. Byrider standards. Harold Zeigler Automotive Group anticipates that the

Berwyn operation could be open by August 2012. The Harold Zeigler Automotive Group was founded in 1975 in southwest Michigan and operates thirty-five franchises in fifteen locations. They own units in Schaumburg and Downers Grove, selling Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, Ram, FIAT and Chevy. J.D. Byrider is an Indianapolis-based used car dealership franchise started in 1989. With a proven track record for more than twenty years, the J.D. Byrider brand has been cited as best in class by being recognized as one of the hottest franchises in the country by Success Magazine and on PBS’ The American Business Review. In 2011, the company was recognized by Franchise Times in its listing of the “200 Largest Franchise Systems.” American Registry, LLC, seconded the honor and added J.D. Byrider to the “Registry of Business Excellence™,” a directory of

professional honors and recognitions of North America’s top performers. Earned through the ratings of colleagues, customers and industry analysts, the Registry identifies companies and individuals across all professions who have distinguished themselves through their outstanding achievements. J.D. Byrider was founded to serve customers with special auto financing needs and to ensure that they receive the same quality service in every dealership. The company is a onestop-shop that not only sells and finances vehicles but also provides comprehensive maintenance and repair services. J.D. Byrider has 135 locations in 30 states and currently serves over 150,000 customers.

Beverly Pastorek, Classic Touch Hair Designers. Zimmermann also presented the 2011 President’s Award which is given each year to an individual whose hard work and accomplishments exemplify the mission and spirit of the BDC and contribute to the Berwyn community. This year’s award was given to two recipients, John Aranza and Christine Tully Aranza. According to Zimmermann, both have been instrumental to the revitalization of Roosevelt Road. Their belief in the viability of the corridor is evident in the opening of their second business, the critically-acclaimed Autre Monde Cafe & Spirits. Eleven recognition plaques were given to business owners who invested in their properties with the assistance of TIF in 2011. These businesses included: 12th Street Rag, Automated Lifestyles, Autre Monde Café & Spirits, Berwyn Kia, Buffalo Wild Wings Grill & Bar, Culver’s, Dunkin Donuts/Baskin Robbins, La Z de Oro, The Math Spot, Padgett Business Services and Paisans Pizzeria & Bar. President’s Column

For consumers that don’t use QR codes, expect them to be inquisitive, which may open the door for a conversation and a potential sale. Businesses owners can use QR codes by adding them to any print advertising such as business cards, letterhead, signs, menus, flyers and invitations. Often the code will direct you to information on products, special offers, events, or social media profiles. Codes can also direct you to phone numbers, videos and the like. In seconds, interested consumers can be redirected to the marketer’s destination of choice. We want to hear from you! Let us know how you use QR codes. Do you use them for business or are you a consumer that has scanned codes? Please share your experience with us by posting on our Facebook page (contained in the code on page 4) or by emailing the BDC at info@berwyn.net.

And lastly, we will continue to keep our own house in order. The BDC has achieved a nearly 20% reduction in expenses in order to offset reductions in revenue. Our top goal as we move forward is to maintain our effectiveness by doing more with less for our members and the City of Berwyn. In addition, we will maintain our excellent history of perfect records and clean audits. All of the achievements we have made in the past and all of those in the future are the result of the shared commitment of the BDC, the City of Berwyn, and Berwyn residents and businesses. Working together we can make Berwyn a better place to live, work and do business for the betterment of all. I encourage you to join us, join the BDC, join a committee, engage with the City and be a part of the solution to the challenges we face as we move ahead. I pledge to you that I will do all in my power to support our community and its continuing improvement and renewal. Join me and we will succeed.

South Berwyn School District 100

Morton West High School

Our schools have initiated “Parent University” where parents, staff and students gather to teach and learn everything from technology to fitness in a relaxed atmosphere. We are proud to report that all District 100 schools are participating in the Healthier US School Challenge (HUSSC). We created healthier school environments through the promotion of nutrition and physical activity. Our goal of obtaining gold or gold with distinction recognition from the USDA will be the icing on the cake to the benefits our students receive from learning how to live a healthier lifestyle. Congratulations to the students and staff for their commitment to this challenge. To provide children, their family members and the Berwyn community with a variety of resources and information on health, wellness and safety, the District 100 Wellness Committee will present the fifth annual Health Fair at Heritage on Thursday, March 22nd from 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm. Over 35 vendors will provide interactive health education booths and health screenings. Please visit our newly redesigned website at bsd100.org for more information.

As we continue to celebrate our State Soccer Championship, Morton West High School looks forward to sending our graduates out into the world at our commencement ceremony taking place at U.I.C. on June 3, 2012. Fifty-three years after opening our doors, we continue to prepare our students at a high level of rigor for a variety of career and postsecondary opportunities. This year, our Advanced Placement program served more students than ever. Over 1000 A.P. Exams will be taken this spring from 20 different courses. Grants for new technology, access to ACT preparation, and summer bridge programs are available to students. Our seniors will exit Morton West with many honors including academic and athletic accomplishments too numerous to list. See what Morton West High School has to offer at jsmorton.org.

North Berwyn School District 98 The District 98 Wellness Committee met on Monday, January 9, 2012. During the meeting the Safe Routes to School Travel Plan was presented by Heather Shady of the Active Transportation Alliance. The Wellness Committee is reviewing the travel plan and will bring it to the District 98 School Board in April. This plan was formed during a well-attended fall meeting of parents, community members, Berwyn Police and District 98 staff which was held at Lincoln Middle School and sponsored by the District 98 Wellness Committee. Everyone had the opportunity for input regarding the safest routes for our children to use to walk to school.

TIF Project Updates Capri Ristorante 6611 W. Roosevelt Road

Looking to bring Capri Ristorante back to Berwyn, the applicant was approved for use of TIF funds to redevelop the 3,100 square foot space next to FitzGerald’s Nightclub for the opening of a new restaurant. The TIF scope of work included, but was not limited to, interior build-out consisting of framing, plumbing, electrical, HVAC, drywall, painting and architectural work. The original Capri opened in 1985, and currently there are four locations including Downers Grove, Hoffman Estates and two in Burr Ridge. A family owned restaurant, Capri is committed to providing customers with the finest in fresh quality food, personal service and a comfortable dining atmosphere.

American Legion, Commodore Barry Post #256 6919 W. Roosevelt Road

The applicants received TIF funds for exterior improvements at their 6,200 square foot commercial space. The TIF scope of work includes cleaning, masonry, carpentry, insulation, windows, awning and painting. Commodore Barry Post #256 is an organization made up of military veterans. They have been at this location since 1961. It includes a meeting hall, kitchen and bar. The hall is available for rent to the public.

Since it opened in 1985 by “Mama Capri,” Capri Ristorante has expanded to include five locations including the most recent addition on Berwyn’s Roosevelt Road. As a family-owned restaurant, Capri distinguishes itself with its heritage of secret family recipes that were passed down by Mama Capri, and the tradition is carried on by her four sons today. Most notably, the Eggplant Parmigiana, Linguini Con Clams and Pollo Genovese have been awardwinning dishes. According to Gigi Rovito, “I am so glad to be back in Berwyn and to be working with all of my brothers again after 20 years. We started our first restaurant in Berwyn and though we were apart for a few years, it has been a great homecoming.” Visit new newest location in the space next to FitzGerald’s Nightclub. The restaurant has an intimate dining area and bar, a delivery area as well as provides catering services.

Need to Recharge Your Mojo?

In 2011, Youth Crossroads received a three-year grant from Chicago Metro United Way and Office Max, Inc. to coordinate a Berwyn Community School Initiative (CSI), which we introduced in our last issue. Over the past few months, a CSI advisory group, made up of south Berwyn middle schools, local social services and health providers, and the BDC has been actively mapping out strategies to carry out the grant’s goals. A CSI “kick-off” event was held in November at Freedom Middle School which showcased CSI sponsors and local service providers. An after-school program was created for Freedom Middle School students focusing on homework completion, study skills and social skill-building, as well as arts, culture and recreational activities. A parent survey was distributed and collected to measure parent involvement in their child’s academic life and school-sponsored activities. Results of that survey are driving the enhancement of a “Parent University” program that will provide parents and families with new knowledge and skills to improve student academic success and healthy family life. In the next month, a new fitness center will be opened at Freedom, ESL classes will become available for non-English speaking parents, and family support programs will be initiated. YC invites community residents, businesses and organizations to participate in this important initiative with their time, talent, and in-kind donations to improve student achievement and parental support of our local kids. Call YC at (708) 484-7400 to participate.

SCORE Chicago & the BDC can help

The BDC is an official site for free business counseling through SCORE Chicago. Counselors are proven professionals in business and can often help you think outside of the box, consider new ways to generate revenue or organize your business operations. Whatever the question, they can help you figure out the answer. Just ask some of their satisfied customers: “I would recommend this counseling to anyone. I was energized when I left the session.” “My counselor was very perceptive to my needs. I got many new ideas to make things work.” Bilingual counseling is also available upon request. Make an appointment online at scorechicago.org or call (312) 353-7724. Give it a shot.

At the Y, the possibilities are as endless as how good you’ll feel. We offer the following and more: > Before & after school care > Teen leadership club > Sports leagues > Group fitness > Swim lessons > Family Time > Gymnastics > Preschool PAV YMCA
