A TALE OF TWO ANDREWS AT TINHORN CREEK KATIE TRUSCOTT Situated in the South Okanagan, Tinhorn Creek is surrounded by pristine, natural and rugged beauty. Perched mid-hillside, at the base of the Golden Mile hiking trail, the winery offers sweeping views of the valley and beyond to its visitors. The creek flows down the steep mountain slope behind the vineyard; its curvy shape is replicated on the Tinhorn Creek wine labels.

Thanks to a strict ethos and years of conscious effort by the founders, the vineyard is a place where natural biodiversity thrives. Bears are a typical sighting during harvest, known to wander down from the mountainside and load up on the Gewürztraminer, munching up to a tonne of grapes in a single feeding. The vineyard property lines are enclosed by a snake barrier, allowing protected indigenous rattlesnakes to migrate naturally while protecting vineyard workers from snakes. The vineyards are Salmon Safe certified, and the winery is carbon neutral, meaning any net release of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere is paid back through a carbon offset program. Meet the Andrews The environment at Tinhorn Creek is alive and thriving, and as a result, so are the vines. Andrew Moon, Tinhorn Creek’s viticulturist since 2008, will tell you that he is simply a caretaker in the raw environment. Tinhorn Creek’s vines serve as a vessel, expressing the land in a bottle. Tinhorn Creek’s winemaker since 2014, Andrew Windsor, reiterates this belief by stating that the wines he produces are expressions of Tinhorn’s terroir, complemented by some pretty savvy, sustainable winemaking techniques. I was privileged to spend the day with Tinhorn’s two Andrews. They share the same name and the same principles, working in what they both define as a fullcircle partnership. Their viticulturist/winemaker relationship is a symbiotic one. Two extremely laid-back professionals working together to produce exceptional and expressive wines. Andrew Moon – Viticulturist Andrew Moon’s passion for wine radiates. Moon is originally from Australia, but now calls the South Okanagan home. Cruising around the vineyard, Moon is in his happy place, which is communicated through his infectious laugh. Standing at the top of the vineyard, overlooking the entire property, he turns to me and states that he has “the best job on the planet.”

Andrew Windsor – Winemaker Toronto native Andrew Windsor, creator/ winemaker at Tinhorn Creek, is just as passionate about what he does. In 2008, after completing his master’s degree in enology, Windsor spent the next six years living and making wine in places like Marlborough, Yarra Valley and the Northern Rhône. Windsor is creative in how he implements sustainable practices in his winemaking. He’s been known to take advantage of the below-freezing Okanagan winter weather to cold stabilize his wines, with no mechanization necessary. Windsor tells me he has an inherent, experimental nature and is thankful for the freedom to create at Tinhorn Creek. He describes his winemaking style as proactive rather than reactive. Under Windsor’s direction, The Creek was born: an ultra-premium Flagship wine exclusively from estate vineyards. Once a year, the Tinhorn Creek Innovation series releases an interesting, idiosyncratic wine or two. Keep an eye out for this! Tour Tinhorn Tinhorn Creek winery is an interactive one — a place where guests can witness every aspect of wine and its production. Tours are available with a guide or can be self-guided. Guests join in all the fun at harvest, able to view exactly what’s going on from various vantage points in the winery. A pocket of vines, showcasing Tinhorn Creek’s core varietals, provides a perfect picnicking spot for guests who are encouraged to bring their own picnic basket and pick fresh grapes to enjoy with lunch. Grapes are even served up in the tasting room where one can compare the nuances of the fresh fruit against the finished product. Events and Wine Club A proudly Canadian establishment, Tinhorn Creek offers its Canadian Concert Series, where up to 500 guests can sip from the beautiful portfolio of wines, enjoy local music and bask in the views from the amphitheater. The winery also hosts a plethora of other wine-related events. Be sure to book your tickets for the upcoming event in October: Grazing in the Vineyard. Tinhorn Creek offers plenty of special perks and advantages through its wine club, the Crush Club. Members get first dibs to small lot wines and prereleases. Exclusive dinners and parties are just some of the benefits involved in being a member. No matter what time of year, a visit to Tinhorn Creek will certainly be a memorable one. Tour the vines, taste the wine and polish off your day with a delicious artisan bite from their award-winning restaurant, Miradoro. Be sure to keep an eye out for and say hi to the Andrews; hard at work, thriving and living the dream in their natural habitat.

FALL INTO WINTER IN VERNON DARCY NYBO The weather may be cooler, but there are still plenty of things to do in Vernon. Whether it’s you and a friend or the whole family, it’s time to explore, eat and enjoy!

Autumn Fun with Vernon Fall Festivals The changing colours in Vernon signal it’s time for the harvest, great food and outdoor adventure. In September and October, you’ll find fresh produce from the fields. Bite into juicy pears or crunchy apples. Don’t forget to stock up on squashes, pumpkins and other great artisan goodies at the Vernon Farmers' Market. Grab the kids and celebrate harvest time at Davison Orchards. Their Apple Harvest Festival starts in early September and runs until the apples are gone. Take the Johnny Popper Orchard Tour into the orchard and pick some delicious apples. Every weekend, farmers choose a new apple variety to pick. Go every weekend! After the apples are gone, Davison Orchards offers a Pumpkin Festival every weekend in October. Take a ride out to the pumpkin patch on the Johnny Popper Orchard Train and pick your very own Jack-O-Lantern. The best part is the great food. Sink your teeth into a caramel apple, or try some apple cider donuts and fresh baked apple pie. Also in October, the O'Keefe Ranch has its annual Family Daze and Corn Maze on the weekends from 11 am to 4 pm. They dare you to check out the haunted corn maze with the Field of Screams. Those who prefer less ghostly fun can take a wagon ride, ride a pony or visit the general store. Liquid Refreshments Vernon is home to the BX Press Cidery, Marten Brew Pub, Okanagan Spirits and Honeymoon Meadery. You can taste the goodness of the cider at the BX Press Cidery, open three days a week in the cooler months. Marten Brew Pub is a craft brewery and a restaurant with flights of handcrafted beer. Over at Okanagan Spirits, you’ll find award-winning liqueurs, brandy, absinthe, vodka, gin, whisky, grappa, aquavit and bitters. And don’t forget the mead! Honeymoon Meadery has been turning out award-winning mead for over 10 years now. Wine Tours There are vineyards in Vernon and the wineries are only 20 minutes away. Mojo Tours out of Vernon is happy to take you on the Scenic Sip tour, just outside of Vernon. Relax and let someone else do the driving as you sip and sample your way through the day. Foodie Heaven Those who want a bit more food-related fun should check out Helmet’s Sausage Kitchen in Vernon. Create your own charcuterie board with handcrafted European sausage, smoked meats and deli goodies. Cheese lovers take note, many of the

locally produced cheeses can be found at the Vernon Farmers’ Market. If you prefer, drive out to Triple Island Cheese Farm outside of Cherryville or take in the cheese festival in Armstrong in November. Aside from all the great fresh produce, meats and cheeses in Vernon, there is an abundance of great restaurants to choose from. The multi-ethnic restaurant scene will have your mouth watering. Choose from family dining, fast food, fine dining, international cuisine, pub fare and even food trucks. There are dozens of Asian food restaurants as well as Italian, Greek, Filipino, Indian and Mexican, just to name a few. Hike and Bike The Vernon area is well known for its hiking and biking trails. From trails that meander through the city, to lakeside adventures and exhilarating mountain scenery, there’s a trail just right for you. There’s even fat biking in the winter all around Vernon. Winter Wonderland and a Carnival When the snow starts to fall, that means it’s time to bundle up and get outdoors. There’s Nordic skiing, downhill, snowboarding, snowshoeing, tubing, skating and snowmobiling at SilverStar. Vernon Winter Carnival offers hot air balloons, ice sculpting, tons of arts and cultural events and a pirate theme! Outdoor Theatre The Caravan Farm Theatre hosts a walk of terror at the end of October and a winter sleigh ride experience from mid-December to the end of December. It’s the world’s only horse-drawn winter sleigh ride theatre experience. There’s so much more to see and do in Vernon and the surrounding area in the fall and winter. RICCO BAMBINO: CHARMINGLY AVANT-GARD LESLEY BUXTON The ambience at Ricco Bambino is Italian elegance meets new nostalgia; understated and fun, inviting and relaxed. It’s feminine with a sexy, masculine edge – think Sean Connery as Bond in Thunderball in his open pink shirt and white shorts. The upholstery is crushed velvet; the colour scheme is light pink and pale gold, accented with large potted palms, green spaces and two state-ofthe-art concrete and stainless-steel tanks. This space is every iconic image you’ve ever known: Sophia Loren’s '70s-style mink coat, Michelle Pfeiffer’s long white halter dress in Scarface, Madonna strutting the stage in her iconic Gaultier bustier. Everything here screams Rome, yet somehow feels like Kelowna. This urban winery blurs the lines between winery, wine shop and bar.

Typically, wineries start as estates growing grapes, and slowly evolve into becoming wineries. Ricco Bambino, on the other hand, started by making wines to suit its vision and then found a space. Though this winery’s evolution was avantgarde, be assured the operators know what they’re doing. Unusual as their approach might be, it has allowed them certain freedoms. In particular, the ability — from vintage to vintage — to select the very best organic grapes from a variety of estates in the South Okanagan, thus guaranteeing top quality fruit to create enticing, unforgettable, minimal-interference wines that showcase the region’s unique microclimate. Introducing Crooked Crown Ricco Bambino recently purchased Crooked Crown, a gorgeous 10-acre estate in Oliver, a region celebrated for the quality of its terroir. The winery is planning for the future. Eventually, they want a land-based winery housed on the estate; a site where they can continue creating their special brand of less-is-more wines. Come Enjoy a Personal Wine Experience Another significant distinction is their wine-tasting philosophy. Here, the emphasis is on crafting a personal wine experience centred around the needs of the guest. The sommelier will visit the guest’s table. Learn from them as little or as much as you like; if you’re curious, go deep. If not, relax and enjoy the wines. Tastings feature three or six wines, all extraordinary. Our advice: try all six. Start with the Kicked Out of the Country Club Brut, a Metodo Italiano Sparkling Brut that, like Ricco Bambino’s ambience, is delightfully light and classic. This wine goes down far too easily. It’s crisp and fresh with subtle lemon notes, peaches and blossoms. Invite your significant other to indulge and share a bottle.

SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2018

Very Troubled Child Rosé Brut is a Metodo Italiano Sparkling Rosé Brut the same colour of pink as the winery’s walls. It is elegant, yet approachable, filled with endless fine bubbles. Imagine hints of sumptuous cherry blossom cream, ripe strawberries and bright red cherries. Unrefined, unfiltered, unapologetic, the Syrah is tremendously drinkable. Brave and bursting with bold red fruits, it emulates classic white pepper with a complementry yet subtle bouquet of lavender, sage and aloe. It’s a brilliant example of what nature can produce under a masterful but gentle hand.

Everything here screams Rome, yet somehow feels like Kelowna

The Rosé is a charming enigma, made of 100% Cabernet Franc. It’s field strawberries with a hit of savoury aromatics and a kick of dry spice. Perfect for drinking après shoe-shopping with friends. Be warned: it’s mouth-watering, and with only 350 cases, it certainly won’t last. The Vino Bianco is a charismatic blend of Riesling and Viognier. Crisp, bright and refreshing, it’s also far too drinkable — it’s nearly impossible to drink only one glass. This persuasive wine presents notes of pineapple, pear, bright lemon and white flower, with a subtle mineral finish. Last, but certainly not least, is the Viognier. Light and dry, it presents plush aromatics with a sumptuous mouthfeel of apricot, pineapple and ripe lemon pulp. Textured floral notes and lemon drops linger for a long finish. It is a wine designed for hot, lingering Sunday afternoons on the patio. Get Your Limited Edition Wines Not only are Ricco Bambino’s wines scrumptious but they’re packaged beautifully. The bottles, which are made in France by Verallia and Saver glass, look like antique decanters. The glass stops look like crystal doorknobs and can be reused. All Ricco Bambino’s wines are limited editions. They’re available online, at The Curious Café and La Bussola Restaurant, and at Ricco Bambino’s in Kelowna, where the motto is: “Come for a taste, stay for a glass, leave with a bottle.”

PLATINUM AT CEDARCREEK ESTATE WINERY ROSLYNE BUCHANAN At CedarCreek Estate Winery, two tiers of elegant wines — Estate and Platinum — are crafted with care. The Platinum tier is comprised of the best of the vineyard grapes. Each year, the CedarCreek team seeks out grapes representative of interesting local sites and old heritage blocks to develop Platinum single-vineyard or single-block series wines. Such places in the vineyards demonstrate “something unique; where vine maturity, soil and climate combine to create something distinctly CedarCreek.”

steps and vessels — such as ceramic, concrete and oak — are used to ferment and finish the wines.

“Our thoughtful, precise winemaking approach highlights specific characteristics from individual vineyard blocks to make premium, terroir-driven wines while, at the same time, transitioning to organic practices across all of our vineyards” says winemaker Taylor Whelan. CedarCreek’s wines are carefully cultivated and finessed, rather than simply made, bottled or produced.

In WineAlign’s recent 2018 National Wine Awards Competition (NWAC), the 2016 Platinum Block 5 Chardonnay earned a prestigious Platinum Medal. NWAC awarded Gold medals to 2014 Platinum, The Last Word (red blend) and 2017 Platinum Block 3 Riesling; Silver medals to 2014 Platinum Desert Ridge Meritage and 2016 Platinum Riesling Icewine. In all, medals awarded included one platinum, three gold, five silver and four bronze, placing CedarCreek seventh in the 2018 NWAC’s Top Wineries in Canada — which is no small feat, as this year’s awards are considered “the largest and most comprehensive wine competition in Canadian history.”

As the vines age, their individual characteristics emerge. Over time, allowing for vintage variation, the team becomes comfortable with the consistency of character. Then, different

RAUDZ REGIONAL TABLE: WITH OR WITHOUT RESERVATIONS ROSLYNE BUCHANAN Known for its exceptional take on fresh and local Okanagan cuisine in its vibrant and comfortable setting, RauDZ Regional Table traditionally didn’t want to force patrons to make reservations. The only reservations guests had about that casual approach was when they wanted to plan their own special night out, or when they wanted to showcase this local gem to out-of-town guests. The team at RauDZ listened; now reservations can easily be made online or by calling the restaurant directly. Open Thursday to Monday at 5 pm, RauDZ is happy to address guests’ concerns and now confirms “reservations are accepted, and walk-ins are always welcomed.”

These days, the choice is yours to walk in on impulse to enjoy RauDZ and/or mastermind your special occasions, like birthdays and anniversaries, in advance. I’ll drink to that! Liquid Chefs & the Cocktail Program Speaking of drinks, RauDZ has always had a strong cocktail program, which dates back to the days when BC bar industry legend, Gerry Jobe, led the team. Over the years, the liquid chefs at RauDZ have continued to be a creative force in the cocktail field, snapping up awards in competitions. Leveraging the Okanagan’s bounty into the best field-to-glass drinks, with house-made fruit purées, reductions, freshly harvested lavender, thyme, mint and whatever else is fresh and seasonal, is a fine art at RauDZ. Try a RauDZ Caesar that adds house-made beef stock, hot sauce, horseradish and pickled carrot with Illichmann’s sausage. Or Martinis, Gin Mules and Sangrias that highlight seasonal fruit! Ask your server for selections of Barrel-Aged Cocktails — classic cocktails that have been aged for five-plus weeks in charred American Oak barrels. It’s a local field trip even to peruse the list! You’ll find recipes for a selection of these cocktails in the Twilight chapter of The Okanagan Table: The Art of Everyday Home Cooking by Chef Rod Butters. Naturally, whenever possible, regional distilleries, wineries, breweries and cideries are the stars. On the topic of local producers, RauDZ is creating its own private label gin in collaboration with long-time distillery partner Okanagan Spirits. RauDZ's private label gin will be poured exclusively in the restaurant this fall. This special recipe, developed with RauDZ’s own talented Liquid Chefs, is formulated as cucumberforward with florals in the background to complement RauDZ cocktails and menus. It is 100 per cent local, of course! It contains mock orange, a native BC shrub, hand foraged by Okanagan Spirits’ Tyler Dyck from Poplar Point, at the foot of Knox Mountain. Additionally, Orris Root — the rootstock of an iris — adds a violet floral note perfect for gin and tonics. It doesn’t get more fresh and local.

SKIP THE BAR SCENE – COME TO SANDHILL WINERY BLAKE ALLEN

Let’s face it: the Kelowna life is the good life! Kelowna has a near-endless selection of world-class restaurants, lakeside beaches with sun-warmed sands and a diverse array of independent boutique shops dotted along tree-lined streets. It’s no wonder so many people make the trip to Kelowna every summer for a taste of this city. After all, how many cities can claim to have a winery right in the heart of their downtown core? BC’s First Urban Winery Tucked away just off Richter Street in the Kelowna Packing District is Sandhill Winery, British Columbia’s first urban winery. It’s a spacious, modern winery complete with tasting bars, lounge and a virtual vineyard experience. This isn’t some new trend. Sandhill Winery has roots in this city that trace back to 1932 when it was known as Calona Winery. The old tasting bar can still be found at the back of the new tasting room, restored and renovated to house Wayne Gretzky Estate wines, a premium line that helps support youth hockey across Canada. While this little corner of the winery now has a more updated look, it has maintained its cavernous, stone-walled cellar atmosphere. Any tasting here is bound to be a favoured memory for anyone, local or guest. To truly appreciate the history of this unique winery and the history of Okanagan Wine in general, be sure to do a tasting of the Conviction Series that chronicles the history of Calona Winery. Then, pop into the winery’s museum in the room adjacent.

Sandhill Happy Hour For locals (and those still soaking up what remains of the Okanagan summer sun), the real fun begins on September 14, when the popular Sandhill Happy Hour returns. Why spend your Friday nights in a crowded bar when you and your friends could just relax in the winery’s open-spaced lounge with live music? Happy Hour entails catered, three-course meals featuring a rotating schedule of local Okanagan chefs and glasses of Sandhill’s award-winning wines that range from $8 to $11. Happy Hour at Sandhill is every Friday from 5 to 7 pm. Because the featured artists and chefs are always changing, you can count on no two nights providing the same experience. Join the Club For those of you reaching the end of your vacation and unwilling to leave behind this uniquely Okanagan lifestyle, the Sandhill Wine Club can help you host your own happy hour at home. Members receive (in addition to early access to new releases and in-store discounts) two bottles of wine every month and free shipping, for only $56/month. Not everyone is lucky enough to call Kelowna home, but thankfully, it’s always possible to take a bit of Kelowna home with you.

HARVEST TIME Harvest season is in full swing and it’s time to celebrate all the hard-working farmers, growers, chefs, beverage creators and everyone involved in providing us with delicious things to eat and drink. I love the harvest season. I love the cooler weather, the changing of the leaves, that certain crispness that you can feel in the air. I love the fruit and produce stands that dot the highways and byways to and from the wineries, cideries, meaderies and distilleries. It’s also my favourite time to go out and celebrate our great province. Most of our communities celebrate the harvest season with festivals and events that showcase the bounty of BC. There’s the hot pepper festival in Keremeos called the Similkameen Sizzle, an Apple Harvest Festival in Vernon and the Westjet Wine Tasting (one of many wine events this fall) in Kelowna. The Lower Mainland has Food Truck Festivals in Vancouver and the Fraser Valley. Down by the US border you’ll find fall fairs that celebrate bounty in Grand Forks and Rock Creek. As you head into the Thompson Valley, you’ll find more fall fairs and rodeos, all complete with great food and drink. Make your way up to the northern climes and you’ll find even more harvest celebrations in large and small communities. Farmers’ markets overflow with produce and there’s always fresh, home-baked pie for sale somewhere. Up in Prince George they celebrate the season with wine at Sip Fest. On Vancouver Island, there’s everything from beer festivals, to fungus festivals, to wine festivals. Then up at Haida Gwaii they celebrate fall with their Wild Harvest Festival and salmon derbies.

EVERY VISIT IS AN ADVENTURE AT SUMMERHILL PYRAMID ORGANIC WINERY ROSLYNE BUCHANAN Exuding commitment and joy in your work as Summerhill Pyramid Organic Winery’s team does, the enthusiasm can rub off on guests. That’s why customer satisfaction ratings remain consistently high chez Summerhill, why every visit to the iconic Kelowna landmark proves to be an adventure and why it is lauded as “Canada’s most visited winery.”

From the beginning, Founder/Proprietor Stephen Cipes was keen to showcase the quality of Okanagan-produced wines and to enhance the tasting experience for guests. To that end, Summerhill invests in recruiting the best people and providing staff development. “We’re so proud of our wonderful staff in the Wine Shop and restaurant. Managers Gabriel Osborn and Li Zhou ensure our Wine Shop is enthusiastically managed and each guest feels welcome. In the Bistro, under the direction of our talented Executive Chef Jeremy Luypen, that warmth extends to our dining guests by the team of Scotia, Sue and EunMi,” says Cipes. Organic Eats Summerhill Pyramid Bistro offers “extraordinary organic dining,” and food service is now expanded with Small Plates Extraordinary Organic Eats. Cipes asserts, “It complements our 200-seat restaurant with delicious options — what I like to call fast-food organic.” Wine-paired small plates are available, as well as family meals-to-go. “It’s meant to be family friendly, where you can mix and match like a fun, family picnic. In addition to suggested wine pairings, non-alcoholic beverages appropriate to the cuisine will be available,” explains Chef Luypen. Growing Naturally The cuisine’s flavours are accentuated using only local, organic and sustainable growers/producers, and Summerhill’s own permaculture-style organic gardens, which are overseen by Gabe Cipes, biodynamicist/ permaculturist. In recognition of his excellence in the gardens and vineyards, and his leadership in organic stewardship, Gabe has been promoted to Vice President. Additionally, recognizing his exemplary work with Winemaker/Viticulturist Eric von Krosigk, Brett Thiessen was appointed Vineyard Manager to make Summerhill vineyards “a model to the world of operating a large organic vineyard,” reports Stephen Cipes. He hopes to persuade all of the Okanagan to go organic, “as we have the least pests of any viticulture area in the world given we’re the world’s northernmost fruit-growing region.” Organic Okanagan DECLARATION “We’ve made great progress with the Organic Okanagan DECLARATION to convert the entire valley by 2020. With so many conversions underway, we’ve extended the date to 2025 and invite everyone to sign the DECLARATION at organicokanagan.com Join us to convert your own lawn and garden to organic,” urges Cipes. New Branding In the spirit of continuous improvement, Summerhill is undergoing new branding that features a stunning photograph of the sun shining over Okanagan Lake and the vineyard’s pyramid. Watch for new labels and signage. It’s also in Cipes’ completely revised book, All One Era, available in the Wine Shop and at amazon.com

The Summerhill Experience Due to popular demand, the Summerhill pyramid is open all day for visits. Inside its theatre, guests can enjoy movies highlighting the wine, the family and the winery. Upstairs, the pyramid provides a perfect space in which to meditate. For those who wish to join in on a guided experience, a tour is available at 2 pm daily. These expanding opportunities to experience Summerhill wines also include the main Wine Shop tasting room, new VIP tasting rooms, the Robert Bateman Gallery tasting bar, the Gazebo and the warehouse tasting station. Open daily, year-round, check out summerhill.bc.ca for current hours, latest news and to book tours. Awards and New Wine At the Okanagan Spring Wine Festival Summerhill’s 2016 Riesling was awarded Best Varietal and Cipes Brut received Gold, making it the single most awarded wine in Canada, having received Gold every year for 26 years consecutively! Heads up, too, says Cipes, for the most beautiful red wine to be released lovingly finished in Summerhill’s exclusive in BC, nine 10,000-litre Italian-design French Oak casks. Summerhill is excited to share the results of the hard work and dedication to vegan, organic and minimumintervention winemaking by Eric, Steve, Michael and Ezra.

Steve Jobs once said: “Your work is going to fill a large part of your life, and the only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work. And the only way to do great work is to love what you do.” Andrew Moon and Andrew Windsor definitely love what they do. Their passion for viticulture and winemaking comes across in their smiles, laughter, attitude and the way they enthusiastically tackle the creation of Tinhorn’s wines.

DEEP ROOTS AND THE PERFECTION OF AN OKANAGAN CLASSIC BLAKE ALLEN

The best gems are always hidden just a little off the beaten path. Perched above West Kelowna, along the charmingly rural West Kelowna farm loop, rests a serene and authentic slice of Italy at Ciao Bella Winery. Where Famiglia is Always Welcome This working-farm vineyard spans oceans and continents. Owners Roberto and Sharon Fiume maintain an authentic Italian working farm in the heart of the Okanagan. This time of year, guests can unwind in the peaceful garden lounge and listen in on the vineyard workers calling out to each other in Italian. Guests are always greeted at the door with a warm benvenuto, and a freshly prepared plate of spuntini (charcuterie, the Italian way) is always available, along with cappuccinos for designated drivers. You become part of the famiglia here before you’ve even sampled the first wine. The family roots run deep here, as do the stubby and stout old-growth vines that line the garden lounge. At more than 60 years old, they are the oldest in West Kelowna. Among these vines are the most famous and internationally acclaimed of Okanagan grapes, the Pinot Noir (known here by their proper Italian title, Pinot Nero). Hand-picked and crafted in small batches in a classic Italian style reminiscent of the Fiume’s homeland, prior vintages of the Pinot Nero have been recognized as the Best in BC, and this year’s 2016 has been awarded a Gold at both the Wine Align and All Canadian National Wine Awards.

Before the summer sun fades from the Okanagan, swing on by this authentic slice of Napoli to sample both the traditional Italian lifestyle and one of the best Pinot Noirs in Canada. Must-Try Wines 2017 Pinot Grigio: This classic off-dry white is defined by strong notes of green apples and apricots, complemented by a calming citric nose. 2016 Rosé: This pink wine is ideal for picnics at the beach. Few wines so elegantly summarize life in the Okanagan as this rosé. A fruitful nose, fresh out of the garden, with prominent notes of strawberries,

rhubarb, and an ever-so-subtle hint of watermelon linger on the back of the palate. 2016 Pinot Nero: Only recently awoken from its 13-month oaked slumber, this light-bodied red, made in the traditional Italian-style, was awarded two Gold Medals this year at both of Canada’s premier National Wine Awards. A rich aroma of Okanagan dark cherries follows from the nose onto the palate, where it’s paired with smooth notes of dark chocolate. This is not the first time Ciao Bella has been recognized as the home of BC’s best Pinot Noir, and this vintage is a fine illustration of why.

SAVOUR THE LAST OF SUMMER IN THE VINEYARDS AND CELLAR OF VOLCANIC HILLS ESTATE WINERY BLAKE ALLEN

The violent, volcanic birth of our valley eons ago left in its wake an environment internationally renowned for wine. In the shadow of the valley’s most monolithic, and thankfully now dormant volcanoes, this history lingers in the soil, providing a terroir unique from the rest of the Okanagan. The grapes grown here exhibit this volcanic legacy in a way that is distinct from the rest of the valley, producing celebrated wines that stand apart. This is the time of year when we squeeze the most out of what remains of our summer sun by escaping the crowds, sneaking in those final visits to our favourite wineries and grabbing the last of this year’s vintages. Tucked away just off the highway, away from the seemingly constant hustle and bustle of West

Kelowna, Volcanic Hills has grown into a favourite among locals. It’s home to distinctive wines and a world-class restaurant, the Blu Saffron. It is the perfect place to soak up the sun’s rays on their outdoor patio that overlooks the lake. It’s always good to keep an eye on the Volcanic Hills Facebook page to learn about upcoming events and specials. For the full Volcanic Hills experience, swing by during their Annual Open House on September 30, between 12 and 4 pm, to receive complimentary wine tastings and join a free tour of the cellars, barrel rooms and surrounding vineyards (starting at 12:30 and 2:30 pm). It’s an essential experience for budding connoisseurs to learn about how wine is grown and made, as well as the ancient art of coopering. You’ll also learn about the important role of terroir and what makes these volcanic hills so important in the production of this great wine.

PEACE LOVE AND ROCK ’N ROLL AT SUMMERLAND ESTATE DEANNA DUNHAM

Summerland Estate Winery and B&B is happy to announce its first upcoming event with Caron Maria Records. “We are excited to team up with Summerland Estate Winery and be able to showcase our artists just down the road from our recording studio,” says producer Thurein Myint. “It is sure to be a wonderful way to spend an evening during the Thanksgiving weekend”. A Night of Music, Wine and Dinner Peace, Love and Rock ’n Roll with Mason Burns takes place October 6. Mason Burns is a talented singer/songwriter out of Penticton, with much of his material inspired by classic rock artists such as Led Zeppelin. The evening will feature three opening acts performed by Jen Peters, Macy Lynn and Samantha Goy. Tickets will be $65 and include dinner and a complimentary glass of Summerland Estate wine. Guests will be welcome to wander the property to take in the Okanagan Lake views at the You Had Me at Merlot wedding pavilion, named after its location in the vineyard beside the soft, easysipping Merlot block. Summerland Estate’s B&B and Guest House will also be open for guests to check out and sample appetizers. Mmmmm Merlot Summerland Estate produces two very different Merlots, both named after the two ending digits of the longitude and latitude location, 88, which also represents good fortune and continuity. The 2016 88 Merlot offers delicate and soft tannins, aged for only eight months in French barrels. It has a Black cherry and sweet plum finish with smooth vanilla cream notes that elegantly exemplify the unique terroir of Summerland Estate Winery. The 2016 Reserve Merlot offers more of a medium tannin structure expressing dark berries and rich cocoa. Aged 24 months in French barrels, it creates a medium body and vanilla bean finish. The estate also uses 50 per cent Merlot blended with Pinot Noir in its rosé. With this kind of diversity, if anyone really had me at Merlot, these guys take the cake.

WHIMSICAL AND WORTHY WINES AT CRESCENT HILL WINERY ROSLYNE BUCHANAN

Crescent Hill Winery is distinguished as one of Penticton’s earliest vineyards. Owner Teresa Murray-Wiseman and her family love to have fun with the brand. Take the highly acclaimed blush, a light, bright, floral and fruity wine irreverently named Hissy Fit. Once a Hobby Teresa’s father, Glenallyn, planted his vines roughly 40 years ago to indulge his winemaking hobby. Leveraging his self-taught knowledge and information gleaned from his professional winemaker friend Tom Hoenisch, plus research by Elias Phiniotis, he planted Vinifera grapes. By 1980, he made his first vintage using European equipment he'd purchased. Still, he never took himself too seriously. He sold his “juice” without a winery license to friends, neighbours, and to Casabello and Calona Wines.

From Family Recipe to #1 Seller Hissy Fit is Glenallyn’s old recipe that the family rediscovered and refined by current winemaker Russell Wiseman, Teresa’s husband. Today, Crescent Hill’s number one seller, it was famously known in Glenallyn’s circles as “blush.” Teresa’s sister Teena Murray-Christiansen first recalled it and suggested, “Why don’t we make some of Dad’s blush?” Family folklore hints that the original may have sported a touch of moonshine. However, Russell’s modern refinements create a refreshing twist on white wine, infused instead with raspberries. Layered with Riesling, Gewürztraminer, Verdelet and raspberry infusion, expect a fruit blast on the nose and tongue at the outset. In the middle, it balances well to a stone fruit sensation and closes out clearly citrus. Have a Hissy Fit The label by talented local artist Janis Blyth playfully depicts the light and fun spirit of the wine. On the back it states: “Are you a PRINCESS, a demanding DIVA, or just OVER WORKED? If yes, then you are familiar with the following…TANTRUMS, OUTBURSTS, AGITATIONS, EXPLOSIONS, ERUPTIONS, FIRE WORKS, FLARE UPS, HUFFS AND DELIRIUMS. Well now there is a wine made JUST for you. Go ahead. Have a HISSY FIT, you deserve it!” Clearly, it’s a teasing prompt to just enjoy the wine and not take yourself too seriously. (The adjacent illustration extends this tenour and exemplifies the family focus by including a precocious young lady who happens to be Teresa’s niece, Sophie — granddaughter of Glenallyn.) Hissy Fit, says Teresa, receives a warm appraisal from young to old, men and women. “It’s often purchased as a gift for baby and bridal showers, birthday and weddings.” It has also been praised by wine experts, receiving such awards as Silver for Semi Dry Rosé in the Great American International Wine Competition New York. Whimsical Marketing – Great Wine

Watch for another strong statement in Vendetta, Crescent Hill’s first sparkling wine, which was released in late July. Visit the winery or taste the wines where available. The marketing may be whimsical, but the winemaking is not. S I MILKA ME E N EXCEPTIONAL OLD WORLD WINE AT GREAT PRICE finds an outstanding wine that fits into the budget. Seven Stones continues to get feedback from happy wine drinkers who just love the value they get from the winery’s vast selection of current vintage and library wines.

Two of Seven Stones best current vintage sellers just took home medals in the WineAlign National Wine Competition: The Legend, a 2014 blend won Gold, and the 2014 Speaking Rock Cabernet Franc received Silver.

Stimulate Your Senses in Cool Caves

Library Wines at Current Vintage Prices

This fall, come visit Seven Stones Winery, nestled on benchland overlooking the Similkameen Valley. This winery is well-known for its fullbodied red wines, a spectacular view and mysterious caves. While in the caves, enjoy classical music in 3,500 square feet of cool comfort. It’s an excellent place for events and an even better place to let the wine age in French oak barrels. The aging wine loves the consistently humid 10.5 degrees.

One would think that purchasing library wines would be cost prohibitive. That’s not the case at Seven Stones. George believes that stocking your personal wine cellar with quality wines shouldn’t break the bank. He’s been known to consistently release older vintages at what many competitors would consider current vintage prices, and you’ll find a sizeable collection of superior library wines here.

CONTRIBUTED It’s not often one

Owner George Hanson created the caves to make distinctive, exceptional wines that aged well. Instead of wine lovers cellaring the wines themselves, George keeps them in the caves until they’ve matured.

Come to Seven Stones and enjoy the magic of the fall with a glass of wine as you take in the breathtaking view from the observation deck overlooking the Similkameen Valley. Take an unforgettable tour of the winery and caves and see how the extraordinary wine of Seven Stones is made. One taste and you’ll know why it’s won so many awards.

"I won’t sell a wine before it’s time and I keep the prices reasonable. Quality wine should be accessible to everyone." - Owner/Winemaker George Hanson.

VANESSA VINEYARD: TWO ICONIC REDS BOMBARDED BY THE SUN LESLEY BUXTON Howard Soon, acclaimed Master Winemaker at Vanessa Vineyard, remembers 2015 well. “[It was] the kind of summer where you could just snap your fingers and the grapes were killer ripe.” He knew this would be an important year for their winery’s Cabernet Franc. “Heat makes wine rich,” he explains.

The vines grow on sloping, welldrained, rocky terrain and bask in the sun from west to southwest exposure. The result: Cabernet Franc 2015, winner of Double Gold, Best in Category, at the All Canadian Wine Championships 2018. This year alone, Vanessa has received nine medals from three prestigious competitions. This Cabernet Franc is enticing. Think aromas of black, brambly blackberry combined with freshly ground coffee beans, Okanagan cherry and toasty oak, loaded with dark tantalizing flavours of North African dates, framed by Madagascar vanilla and heady spice on the palate. It is a wine with fortitude, bearing and a lingering finish. The second red wine of note is the Cabernet Sauvignon. The grapes for

Vanessa’s Cabernet Sauvignon 2015 are grown on the highest point of the estate. Howard says they look as if they’re tortured — bombarded by sunlight, struggling to survive. The fact these vines are fighting to live is good news for the winemaker. In their struggle, the vines pour all their energy into production, and as a result, the small-yield grapes are bursting with rich flavour and juice. The outcome is an iconic wine, beautifully esoteric, that opens with elegant mint and black currant aromas. On the palate, it’s mature, with flavours of freshly picked blackcurrants, wild tart blackberries, rich espresso and dark Belgian chocolate on the finish. It's a powerful wine with a poised, lasting finish. Drink it with friends who love wine and good conversation. These two iconic reds are available by allocation, due to the limited production. See info online at vanessvineyard.com for release dates, availability and reviews, or visit the wine shop, open daily from 10am to 6pm pm from April to October for a guided tasting experience.

CLOS DU SOLEIL WINERY – COLLECTIBLE WINES THAT DISAPPEAR QUICKLY LESLEY BUXTON Award-winning Clos du Soleil Winery is notorious for its commitment to crafting beautiful wines inspired by the great wines of Bordeaux that are unmistakably reflections of the Similkameen Valley. Since their inception, they have championed a philosophy of minimalinterventionist winemaking and biodynamic viticulture. The outcome of this is critically acclaimed wines sought after by collectors of fine wines.

Autumn Releases One of their autumn releases, the much anticipated Béton 2016, is no exception. This select small lot wine is an exploration of the impact of concrete fermentation and maturation on Bordeaux varietals. An elegant blend of Merlot and Cabernet Franc,

it’s a brilliant purple-red in the glass, with an expressive and aromatic nose. Imagine pure blackberry, blackcurrant, mint, and raspberry with beautiful lifted floral components, juicy and rich on the palate with full fine-grained tannins, a rounded texture and traces of sagebrush. It is a wine of precision and elegance, displaying the fruit front and centre. It is offered exclusively to Clos du Soleil’s wine club members due to its limited availability. This exceptional wine is destined to become another award winner. Other Wine Club Perks Access to limited edition wines is not the only perk of membership in Clos du Soleil’s Wine Club, it’s also the best way to ensure tickets to the winery’s premiere event: Verticale. This invitation-only occasion is hosted by Clos du Soleil’s winemaker Michael Clark and Master of Wine Rhys Pender. It is an exploration of the lineage of their two flagship wines: Capella and Signature. There are also other treats from the winery’s private library. All of this is paired with a regionallymulticourse meal by renowned chef, Natasha Schooten.

The winery is also introducing its Fumé Blanc 2017 and Syrah 2016 (the prior vintage quickly sold-out). This is one of the dangers of a small artisanal winery, so wine aficionados, make sure to visit soon or risk being disappointed! These wines are fated to draw attention to themselves.

RED ROOSTER: THE PERFECT ROOST LESLEY BUXTON Red Rooster Winery hopes you’ll join their flock as a member of their brand-new wine club: the Rare Bird Club. It’s the perfect fit for wine aficionados. Members receive wine deliveries of six bottles of wine three times a year (in March, July, and November). These orders feature the limited-edition Rare Bird wines, an exclusive small-batch series only available at the estate’s wine store. These aren’t the only perks of membership. To tempt members to spend more time at the winery, they receive 15 percent off at The Pecking Room Bar & Grill, the winery’s acclaimed eatery, featuring the culinary expertise of Chef Darin Paterson. Paterson is the talent behind Bogner’s of Penticton and well known for creating great farm-to-table meals.

This summer Chef Darin taught several cooking classes at the vineyard. These were all hugely successful and included a fabulous sit-down, harvest-style dinner with wine pairings. Rare Bird Club members received a $20 discount. You can’t beat a deal like that: dinner and wine and the chance to socialize with a renowned chef for only $110. Yoga in the Vineyard For those who like a good stretch, Red Rooster offers Sunday morning yoga and brunch with Wendy from Get Bent, the popular Penticton yoga studio. This prominent studio is celebrated for tailoring its workshops to the needs of its clients. It’s this common purpose that brings these two local businesses together for the ultimate yoga-and-wine experience. Imagine enjoying one of Red Rooster’s famous views as you practise. Downward dog never felt so good, and you’ll never want to practise yoga anywhere else. Brunch and Cocktails Afterwards, relax over a wine cocktail. Try one of Chef Darin’s legendary brunch dishes. There’s everything from Dutch pancakes to Arabic eggs. Rare Bird Club members receive a $5 discount on yoga classes. After all, it’s important to the folks at Red Rooster that their friends are well taken care of. More Rare Bird Club Perks These aren’t the only benefits of wine club membership. There’s 15 percent discount on merchandise, access to the Rare Bird Club Member’s exclusive tasting lounge and complimentary in-house wine tastings for members and up to three guests. And, of course, there are special invitations to all the wonderful events hosted at the winery. Parties, Celebrations and Events Red Rooster is a superb venue. It’s got it all—a gorgeous location, complete with cozy spaces like the Sensory Room and the Coop, friendly staff, mouth-watering food à la Chef Darin and delicious, award-winning wine. Consider the winery next time your office is planning a party or retreat. It’s a great space for finding inspiration or relaxing. Over the years, the winery has been the setting for many memorable weddings. Picture the photographic possibilities: the bride and groom set against panoramic vistas of Okanagan Lake; the distant hills; the bold blue sky and row after row of vines…magic! They welcome all styles of weddings, from tight budget to lavish, from intimate to huge. Celebrations of all kinds are embraced here. Garden Party The winery is ringing in the fall season with a fabulous Great Gatsby-themed roaring twenties garden party on September 29 — the first Saturday of the Fall Wine Festival. Inspired by the idea of feathers and flappers, the night’s highlights include an outdoor dance floor, period music, rosé cocktails and appetizers and dinner by Chef Darin. Michael Wirischagin, the winery’s Experience Coordinator calls it, “An evening of elegance and opulence.” He’s right. How else could you describe lounging on a magnificent sofa watching the sun set over the lake, or dancing under a string of lights next to a gorgeous vineyard? This delightful evening is generously priced at $80 for regular guests. Club Members only pay $50. And the winner is… It’s no wonder they’re in the mood to strut their stuff at Red Rooster — recently, they’ve been causing a stir internationally. At the prestigious 2018 Los Angeles International Wine Competition, they were awarded a Best of Class and Gold for their Pinot Blanc and a Gold for Riesling. Now that’s really something crow about.

MEYER FAMILY VINEYARDS EXCELS AT WINEALIGN NATIONAL AWARDS AND INTERNATIONALLY ROSLYNE BUCHANAN

Meyer Family Vineyards (MFV) won a Platinum, three Gold and two Silver Medals, was awarded fourth place in the category of Small Winery (under 10,000 cases) and 11th Overall Winery in Canada. Awards Galore! Declaring the 2018 National Wine Awards of Canada “the largest and most comprehensive wine competition in Canadian history,” WineAlign received entries from 1,850 wines, from 257 wineries. To earn top medals, wines progressed through multiple elimination rounds of blind tasting. Platinum Award winners represent only the top one per cent, or top 18 wines in Canada, with MFV 2016 Micro Cuvée Chardonnay, Old Main Road Vineyard, achieving this honour. Gold Medals were bestowed on 2016 Micro Cuvée Pinot Noir, McLean Creek Vineyard; 2016 Reimer Vineyard Pinot Noir; and 2016 Chardonnay, McLean Creek Vineyard. Silver Medals were awarded to 2016 Pinot Noir, Okanagan Valley; and 2017 Chardonnay, Stevens Block, Old Main Road Vineyard. Wines for Norway MFV is excited to have its McLean Creek Chardonnay selected from a formal tender for a full listing in all Norwegian government liquor stores (Vinmonopolet), and should be on the shelves by September. With Norway’s highly restrictive wine monopoly that regulates sales of alcohol, a winery must first be invited to submit specific wines to strictly regulated competitions, and must survive blind tasting eliminations. Based on popular demand, MFV wines are also exported to London, United Kingdom, Japan, East Asia, Mainland China, Switzerland and the United States. Join the Club As a small production winery, many MFV wines are in short supply and sell out quickly. However, a good quantity of their bottles is reserved for the Meyer Family Vineyards Wine Club, with some lower production wines exclusively distributed to its membership and hospitality — one of many reasons to sign up. “It’s like you are a member of the family, with benefits such as priority access to limited-availability wines, library wines and new releases,” said Monica Horning, Wine Club Coordinator. Through the Club, members receive four bottles of award-winning wine three times per year, a 10 per cent discount on wine purchased online or in the tasting room, complimentary tastings at the winery for said member and up to three guests, exclusive access to the online wine club store, no additional shipping fees when adding on to wine orders and invitations to special “Family-Only” events. The Tasting Room on McLean Creek Road, Okanagan Falls, is open daily from 10 am to 5 pm. The Wine Lounge is open Wednesday through Sunday, 11 am to 5 pm. Relax and partake in a cold beverage or small charcuterie plate while enjoying the pristine vineyard setting and Peach Cliff Bluff views. Groups are welcome. INTRODUCING NIGHTHAWK’S LATEST AWARD WINNER: NOCTURNUS LESLEY BUXTON

All the wines produced at this boutique, farm gate winery are grown in a sustainable vineyard and created with minimal interference. Every aspect of the wines’ evolution is natural. This is a winery that allows the quality of the grapes to speak for themselves. Medal-Worthy Nocturnus This September, Nighthawk Vineyards introduced its latest release: Nocturnus, a beautiful Bordeaux-style blend of 65 per cent Merlot, 25 per cent Malbec and 10 per cent Cabernet Franc. Named in keeping with the winery’s theme, Nocturnus is the Latin for “of the night”— a name that conjures up late-night, romantic dinners under the stars with the perfect bottle of wine. And Nocturnus is that wine. Rich and full bodied, terroir driven, it’s the product of a very hot dry summer, exceptional for grape growing. This wine pairs exquisitely with anything barbecued, like thick marbled steaks or rack of lamb with roasted rosemary potatoes. As we head towards cooler months, add Nocturnus to any meal featuring comfort foods, like braised short ribs or beef bourguignonne. The wine critics loved this wine — it received a Bronze at the Wine Align National Wine Awards of Canada (NWAC), one of Canada’s most influential competitions, this is an impressive beginning for an unreleased wine. This a limited release so be warned: it won’t last long. Get your orders in now. Award-Winning Pinot Noir Another Nighthawk Red that fared well at NWAC was Nighthawk’s 2015 estategrown Pinot Noir. “This wine is a great reflection of our terroir,” says winery owner, Daniel Bibby. “It features the earthy characteristics of Pinot, with a distinctive minerality and a hint of spice.” A complex wine, the Pinot Noir was finished in Tuscan concrete tanks, producing a wonderfully textured mouthfeel. Daniel, a former executive chef, suggests pairing it with wild mushroom risotto or duck confit with lemon thyme polenta. The combination possibilities are endless.

Bronze and Silver Chardonnay Nighthawk’s fabulous 2016 Chardonnay recently won two medals: a Bronze at NWAC and a Silver at the British Colombia’s Wine Awards — the province’s oldest and largest competition. This wine is causing a sensation overseas as well; the Norwegians love it. It’s now available at 59 stores throughout the country. This fine, estate-grown Chardonnay was aged for eight months in oak and features aromatic sophistication and mineral complexities characteristic of Nighthawk’s high-altitude vineyard. Imagine a silky-smooth mid-palate with a crisp, lengthy finish: delicious. Try it with tarragon lemon chicken, a Bay scallop chowder with bacon and potatoes or take it on a picnic and enjoy it with one of the Okanagan’s famous views. There’s no wrong way to drink a wine, so hurry and buy a couple of bottles while supplies last.

This fun, family occasion features over 20 Okanagan garlic growers and artisan crafters, as well as appetizing food carts, live music and world-class wine. Admission is by donation to the winery’s charity, the Oliver Elementary School Farm to Table Lunch program. It provides students with healthy meals using fresh, seasonal, homegrown ingredients. The program also educates students about the benefits of eating well, making it popular with healthy-eating enthusiasts throughout the area. For those coming from afar, there’s no need to travel home right away. Stay the Night Complete the trip by staying at one of Hester Creeks' villa suites. The suites are beautifully arranged with the finest touches and feature gorgeous views of the vineyards. Imagine watching the sunset over the vines: it is simply breathtaking. The cherry on top is the delicious homemade breakfast included in the stay, which highlights the region’s locally sourced produce. Outstanding Wines While visiting the winery why not try one or two of their outstanding wines? The Character White 2017 is an inviting blend of Pinot Gris and Gewürztraminer from the estate’s vineyard, boasting aromas of white peach, apricot and rose petal. It tastes of orchard

stone fruit and apple with a subtle touch of minerality, and finishes fresh with a crisp acidity. This light, lively wine can be enjoyed alone or paired with summer flavours and light tapas dishes. It’s perfect for drinking on the deck with good friends. The award-winning Character Red 2016 won Gold at Spring Okanagan Wine Festival, Best of Varietal Awards, 2018. A spicy blend of four classic varietals: Syrah, Merlot, Petit Verdot and Malbec, the Character Red is aged for eight months in a combination of French and American oak. It is a charming savoury wine known for its purity of fruit and aromas of caramel, spice and pepper. It features flavours of dark berries, white pepper, dark fruit and vanilla oak. This wine is big and round with a full, long finish. A great wine for autumn — try it with a classic dinner of roast leg of lamb and fresh rosemary potatoes, zesty lamb burgers cooked on the BBQ or full-bodied cheeses like Stilton. For vegetarians and vegans, pair it with grilled Portobello mushroom burgers layered with roasted vegetables such as local eggplant and zucchini. More Celebrations The estate will be celebrating its fabulous 50th anniversary with ongoing festivities, so don’t forget to check their website for upcoming events. There’s always something creative and exciting happening at this winery. FMI: hestercreek.com

With their Fall Harvest Party, release of their long-anticipated Nota Bene wine and a new autumn menu at their Vineyard Kitchen, you won’t be missing the heat at Black Hills.

Party of the Season Instead of mourning the end of summer, celebrate it September 29, 2018 at the Black Hills Fall Harvest Party. The family-style dinner, paired with top-class wine and locally sourced food, and prepared by Black Hills’ talented Vineyard Kitchen culinary team, is set to be the party of the season. “Not only is the party a fantastic way to celebrate the 2018 vintage, it’s a great excuse to get dressed up and wear something you might not usually get the opportunity to wear, and have a great time,” says Rachel Dick, marketing manager for Black Hills Estate Winery.

of the country’s finest wines. The most highly awaited is their Bordeaux blend, Nota Bene. This year, the winery is releasing their 2016 vintage, which will be available in their Wine Experience Centre, as well as other local wine shops and restaurants, September 1. “Our Nota Bene is our flagship wine, it’s what we’re known for,” says Dick. “There were record temperatures in 2016, which resulted in well balanced fruit with outstanding intensity. It really is a gorgeous wine.” Culinary Delights In addition to creating outstanding wine, Black Hills has enhanced the Estate’s culinary experience with their new Vineyard Kitchen.

Dressed in attire ranging from funky to classic, guests are treated to wine and appetizers before sitting down for a family-style feast, accompanied, of course, by an abundance of Black Hills wine.

Focussing on locally sourced ingredients fresh produce, the Kitchen changes their menu each month. Vineyard Kitchen offers light fare, such as charcuterie boards, salads, and flatbreads. Each item is perfectly customized to pair with one of their exceptional wines.

Black Hills has even arranged shuttle service to and from the event from three resorts in Osoyoos, including Spirit Ridge, Walnut Beach Resort and Watermark Beach Resort. That way, you can indulge in all the wine you desire.

With a new menu rolling out in September, guests can expect to taste the best of the region. Each item is so delicious, it will prove to be difficult deciding what to order. In the fall, the restaurant is open four days a week (Thursday through Sunday).

AWARDS FOR KISMET ESTATE WINERY: PART OF ITS DESTINY ROSLYNE BUCHANAN

Opening the Kismet Estate Winery was destiny for the Dhaliwal family. The word “Kismet” is, in fact, “destiny” in Punjabi. Immigrating to Canada in the 1990s with a mere five dollars in his pocket, Sukhwinder Dhaliwal settled into the Okanagan, working hard in agriculture, and was eventually joined by his brother, Balwinder. Their focus turned to managing vineyards as they gained insight into the industry while buying vineyard property on the side. After shifting their efforts into their own vineyards, selling grapes and consulting as leading grape growers, Sukhwinder’s daughter Neelam shares, “We felt something was missing. We wanted to be on the front end interacting with wine consumers and perhaps make a bit more money for our attention to detail in the vineyards.” While about 90 per cent of the grapes from their 350 acres of property are purchased by other wineries, 10 per cent are kept for Kismet wines. Many varieties are grown there, including rare grapes like Mourvèdre and Grenache. With their track record of growing quality fruit, the brothers were confident that they’d have good quality wine if they had their own winery to carefully craft their own premier grapes. 2018 Awards In the 2018 British Columbia Best of Varietal Wine Awards of Okanagan Wine Festivals, Gold Medals were awarded to 2015 Cabernet

Sauvignon Reserve and 2016 Secret Red (red blends) while 2017 Lotus (rosé) took Silver. In the 2018 All Canadian Wine Championships, 2017 Pinot Grigio, 2016 Syrah and 2016 Mantra (Bordeaux blends) achieved Gold; 2017 Viognier, 2017 Saféd (white blends) and 2015 Cabernet Franc all received Silver; and 2016 Karma (Bordeaux blends) earned Bronze. Dan Berger’s 2018 International Wine and Cider Competitions yielded Bronze medals for 2016 Syrah, 2017 Lotus Blend (60 per cent Cabernet Sauvignon/40 per cent Orange Muscat) and 2017 Pinot Grigio. Then, most recently, the results of WineAlign’s 2018 National Wine Awards of Canada garnered Silver Medals for 2016 Reserve Cabernet Franc, 2016 Karma (red blend), 2016 Syrah and 2015 Moksha (red blend); and Bronze Medals to 2017 Pinot Grigio and 2017 Saféd (white blend). Wine Club and Bistro Such successful results confirm the family’s assertion it has found its true destiny. Equally deserved, Kismet Estate has earned outstanding reviews on TripAdvisor and other consumer rating sites. Join Kismet’s Wine Club to enjoy access to the Family’s Reserve Vintages and other benefits. Kismet’s restaurant, Masala Bistro, is also incredibly popular, offering perfect food pairings to match exquisite flavour notes found in their wines. You may book into the winery’s on-site guest house and never leave!

FALL CALLS FOR QUINTA FERREIRA’S BIG REDS ROSLYNE BUCHANAN

Now is the time to stock up on those big reds cherished in the cooler months. Quinta Ferreira Estate Winery’s tasting room remains open daily, 10 am to 6 pm, until October 31. Big Reds Quinta Ferreira’s flagship wine, ObraPrima, is a stunning blend of Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec and Petite Verdot, which greets you with bell pepper and black cherry notes. With a sip, a concerto of mocha coffee, light cedar, cherry and sweet vanilla will play across your palate, its long spicy finish displaying hard candy flavours. Aged 25 months in 40 per cent new oak, with velvety tannins, this $35 wine drinks well over the next three to five years on its own or with grilled meats. Lighter Blends Looking for a red blend that’s a bit lighter? Try the Mistura Tinto, comprised of a lovely blend of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Syrah. Offering a rich

colour, it boasts an explosion of raspberry and chocolate, black cherry and blackberry, with a hint of spices and vanilla. It is aged 20 months in 75 per cent French/25 per cent American oak barrels and costs $20. The soft and velvety tannins together frame a symphony of fruit flavours on the finish. DISCOVER THE DIVERSITY OF A BORDEAUX RED AT RIVER STONE WINERY BLAKE ALLEN

You can’t truthfully say you’ve tasted the best of Okanagan wine until you’ve tasted a truly Okanagan take on the king of wine: the Red Bordeaux. No wine tasting is complete without good friends at a garden table in the sun, within earshot of a babbling river, surrounded by lush vineyards and a couple of lazy winery dogs. You haven’t discovered the Wine Capital of Canada until you’ve discovered Oliver’s hidden gem: River Stone Winery. River Stone is the kind of place one can very easily (even inadvertently) spend an entire day soaking up the last rays of sun. But no tasting here is complete without sampling the River Stone’s two distinctive Bordeaux blends, and learning about the complexity of these classic French-style wines and their surprising diversity. While Oliver may be home to many wineries, it’s the small, artisanal wineries like these

that earn it the moniker of Canada’s Wine Capital. Think all Bordeaux are the same? Think again! 2015 Stones Throw: A Gold Medalist at both the Pacific North West and the National Wine Awards of Canada, this take on the Bordeaux blend greets you with a soft minerality accompanied with subtle notes of blackberries, dark cherry and plum, with just a hint of vanilla and mocha lingering on the palate. It is balanced, with both mild acidity and silky smooth tannins. 2014 Corner Stone: Showcasing all five of the Bordeaux varietals, this heavy red is uniquely blended with a Cabernet dominance, giving it a distinctively bold medley of berries, chocolate and coffee, set against a body of soft tannins that round off the finish. It is a truly Okanagan take on this French classic.

OL IV ER SANCTUARY AND A PARTY AT HIDDEN CHAPEL BLAKE ALLEN

As one might expect from the Wine Capital of Canada, Oliver can be a bit overwhelming at times. Between the constant rush and roar of the highway and the labyrinth of backroads, it’s easy to forget you’re supposed to be on vacation! But just a quick turn onto Pinehill Road and the sounds of the highway quickly fade as the weary traveller finds herself overlooking the valley below — the serene, garden-clad sanctuary that is Hidden Chapel Winery. A Hidden Gem This award-winning winery is one of those hidden gems that locals like to keep to themselves. Guests are greeted by friendly staff, winery dog included, as well as a wonderfully large and diverse portfolio that includes everything from well-aged reds (cellared for up to six years) to a rich array of whites, both dry and sweet. There’s even a rosé and sparkling for those of you still hoping to squeeze the most out of these last days of summer. At Hidden Chapel, you can sample just about all the Okanagan has to offer. Grab a bottle to take home after relaxing over a glass or two amid the chatter of songbirds in the garden. Come Join the Party But of course, no sanctuary (or vacation) is complete without a party! Be sure to swing by on September 29 from 1 to 5 pm for the First-Annual Chapel Challenge, a series of skill-testing contests, trivia challenges and vineyard golfing that make for a not so typical Sunday picnic. There will be free samplings and plenty of wine on hand, along with food and music, a religious -themed costume contest and plenty of opportunities to win a few bottles of wine (among other prizes). Tickets are limited, so be sure to drop by the winery or give them a ring at (250) 490-6000 to purchase.

ESCAPE THE ORDINARY AT DESERT HILLS AMBER RAE BOUCHARD

Two-time recipients of the Governor General’s Award for Excellence, this family-owned-and-operated winery rests in the heart of Oliver’s famed Black Sage Bench. With 16 vintages under its belt, Desert Hills has become a renowned producer of high-quality wines that have won numerous local and international awards. Teamwork The winery team takes pride in the family aspect of their endeavour. Three brothers divide and conquer at Desert Hills, each focussing on a particular facet of the winemaking process. Whether on the business end of operations or the crucial areas of vineyard and production management, the Toors have their bases covered. A Taste for Charity Visit the estate in Oliver and become enamoured by the beauty of the dry desert landscape flourishing with vinifera as far as the eye can see. Enjoy a tasting and revel in the fact that all collected fees are donated to the family’s charity project, a recreational centre in their home country of India. Enjoy the Bistro While visiting, don't forget to stop by the newly opened bistro where executive chef Patrick serves up delicious eats, including already-infamous artisan pizzas that pair divinely with a glass of Desert Hills wine. The Merlot is highly recommended. A fine representation of the unique aspects of Okanagan terroir, the 2013 vintage has a velvet-smooth mouthfeel coupled with a fine structural backbone that lends itself to pairing with your next summer feast. With such enticing experiences to offer, the Desert Hills team can’t wait to welcome you to their illustrious Oliver winery!

OLIVER A TRIAD OF WINNERS AT GEHRINGER BROTHERS ESTATE WINERY LESLEY BUXTON The awards keep coming in for Gehringer Brothers Estate Winery.

LESLEY BUXTON From its famous, annual Show Shine ‘n’ Wine event, to its Crush Party, Oliver Twist Estate Winery knows how to have fun.

The winery just released its fifth vintage in the NOSTALGIA series with new pin-up girl, Cindy Lou, claiming the bottle. For those who have yet to try Oliver Twist wine, each bottle in the NOSTALGIA series is labelled with a unique pinup girl, from Billy Jean on the Pink Cadillac, to Ellie Mae dancing on the Boogie Woogie White.

Chardonnay Their unoaked Chardonnay won Double Gold and Best of Class at the prestigious 2018 Indy International Wine Competition (IIWC). This Chardonnay, made only in stainless steel, enjoys a slow-cool fermentation and a drawnout sur lie process. (Sur lie is a process developed in Burgundy in which the aging wines aren’t filtered but kept in contact with dead yeast cells.) The process adds a gorgeous complexity and creamy feel to this wine. On the palate, there are hints of pear and pineapple. Light, almost translucent with a gold sheen, there’s an unexpected weight to this wine; a subtle, harmonious fullness.

“Each character embodies the personality of the wine,” says Gina Harfman, owner and winemaker at Oliver Twist Estate Winery. “For our new 2017 Chantilly Lace, a semi-sweet bubbly Kerner blend, we wanted her to have a joyful personality — someone who captures the entire room’s attention.” Oliver Twist’s fall release is a wine to warm you up this fall. The 2014 Syrah, aged in French and American oak, is fruit-forward. Its notes of white pepper, sage and blackberry make it a seamless pairing with wild game, such as venison or lamb. John Schreiner, one of Canada’s most respected wine critics, gave the new release 92 points.

Auxerrois The estate’s 2017 Auxerrois won a Gold and a Best of Class at IIWC. This rare white grape, named for a town in the Burgundy region of France, was first introduced to BC in the seventies by a researcher and has since flourished. However, the availability of the plants was not widespread. Luckily, the Gehringers managed to obtain cuttings of the research plants. Nowadays their offspring thrive on the Golden Mile. A mature, intriguing wine, the Auxerrois exposes itself slowly. It’s captivating, with flavours of melon and passionfruit, and perfect for gatherings where there’s a range of palates. Merlot The Gehringer Brothers’ 2016 Merlot is also making a splash competitively. It won a Gold at IIWC. Grown in the heart of Canada’s desert, identified by its distinctive microclimate and rocky soils, this Merlot has the presence of a heavier red with a balance of fruit flavours that give it a marvellous drinkability and finish. It’s smooth, with flavours of Okanagan cherries, plum and rich cassis. It’s food-friendly and pairs well with hearty meals or comfort foods like a favourite dark chocolate. It’s also delicious on its own, enjoyed with a good book and company.

OLIVER GREAT NEW FALL RELEASES AT ADEGA ESTATE WINERY ON 45TH LESLEY BUXTON Owners Fred Farinha and Alex Nunes are involved in every

aspect of the Adega Estate Winery on 45th, from caring for the vines to working in the barrel room. Adega blends old-world traditions with new-world technology, accompanied by hard work. As autumn approaches, they’ll be busy bottling new fall releases: the fortified Portao (Port), the 2016 Syrah — known for its smoothness and blackcurrant flavour — and the 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon, a wine with a remarkable pedigree, recognized for its lushness and rich tannins. These new releases will be available in the lower mainland at Save On Foods, several select restaurants and the winery itself. Adega Estate Winery is open seven days a week from 10 am to 5 pm until Christmas Day. Malbec and BBQ Adega is celebrated for its red wines, which have a distinctive fruit-forward style. Their 2016 Malbec received acclaim for its uniqueness – there are few in the region that could rival it. Created with only Malbec grapes, it has a distinguishing floral signature with aromas of blueberry, white pepper and sugary candy floss. This varietal has smooth tannins and is medium bodied with hints of vanilla and a gorgeous caramel finish. Try it with spicy food, or a delicious BBQ steak. Refreshing Whites Naturally, Adega also has plenty to offer white wine lovers. First there’s the Pinot Gris. This alluring wine is the perfect warm-day accompaniment with its delicious aromatic bouquet of peaches, apricots and apples. This wine is wonderful with salmon or a light salad. The winery’s popular off-dry Riesling is filled with diverse aromas: green apple, mango with a sliver of papaya. This wine has a big finish with a touch of sweetness and a smooth, fresh acidity. Drink it cold when you have nowhere to be and can just linger over it. You won’t want to rush it.
