ummertime has descended upon us in all of its glory! This is my favorite time of year in BC wine country. The grapevines are lush, the farms are bursting with incredible fruits and vegetables, the sun is shining and, well, and it just feels like one big, neverending party. Our July/ August edition is all about having #FUN as you can see by our cheeky and colourful cover. Does that typeface look familiar? (Page 52 tells the story). Wine country has tons of amazing events to attend over the next two months and I recommend attending as many of them has possible. We love that you are drinking lots of BC wine, but we would love it even more if you made time to visit the beautiful wineries to meet the incredible people behind the labels.  MONTE CREEK RANCH WINERY: COWBOY FRIENDLY

M

onte Creek Ranch Winery became the latest addition to the growing Thompson Valley wine scene with the opening in June of a spectacular building on the TransCanada Highway, near the junction with Highway 97 on Miner’s Bluff Road. Constructed on a promontory that looks northward over the TransCanada to one of the winery’s two vineyards, if offers jaw-dropping panoramic views. There was no need for general manager Erik Fisher and his wife Danett, wine shop manager, to create stories for the new enterprise. Monte Creek Ranch already has a cattle and honeybee operation, and the Thompson Valley is steeped in history. What other winery can boast that Billy Miner, the famous “Gentleman Bandit”, robbed a train on their property? He escaped with the princely sum of $15.50!

Now a 1,200-acre property on what was long known as Ducks Ranch, the Sidhu family, nursery owners and blueberry farmers in Mission, BC, purchased Monte Creek Ranch in 2009. The land looked promising for grapes, and the first vintage in 2014 has confirmed the potential. The unique and lesserknown cool climate grapes are already producing well, as are better known vinifera varieties like Riesling and Chardonnay. Visitors should not expect an intimidating wine experience. Monte Creek Ranch strives to be sincere, down to earth yet proud of its state of the art winery, and devoid of ego. After all, a snooty winery experience in the midst of country where cowboys still saddle up for cattle drives just wouldn’t fit, and that’s just fine with Erik. “Our goal is to produce approachable, easy drinking wine that over delivers on quality for the price,” he says. And if Hands Up Red and Hands Up White, named for the Billy Miner escapade, are any indication, Monte Creek Ranch is well on its way. The white blend is perfectly balanced, with enough acid to pair with food but light and smooth enough to enjoy on its own out on the patio. Melon, honey, citrus and orange blossom aromas are enough to make the toughest hombre swoon. Hands Up Red is a blend of four grape varieties. Balance is lovely on this one as well, with its medium acidity and red and black fruit aromas and flavours. It will nicely complement a barbecue or anything cooked over an open fire. Cowboys take note. Visitors are welcome to bring picnic fixings to enjoy with wine on the patio, and some food is available for purchase. ~ Lorne Eckersley

Just along from Harper’s Trail is an intimate little tasting room at Sagewood Winery where you will meet Doug and Shelley Wood and hear the story of their 100% estate wines and their relationship with the land and vines. The entire trail is doable in a day and with the newly found Kamloops Flavour Trail, you can also now throw some breweries, farms and markets into the mix. ~ Cassandra Anderton

Silvers, and the ‘12 Syrah took a Bronze Medal. An impressive five for five tally is a rare accomplishment for any winery to achieve in a single competition. In addition the ‘12 Alexandrino Syrah and the ‘12 Malbec won Silver and Bronze respectively at the Finger Lakes International Wine Competition in New York. The whites have been winning too—the ‘13 Pinot Gris received a Wine Align Bronze. With the release of the new reserve wines—Alexandrino Syrah and Alfredo Merlot—late in June, all of the 2012 vintage reds have now been officially released. Malbec, Syrah, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and the Manuel and Quarteto Tinto blends are all available throughout the summer until they are sold out. ~ Luke Whittall

he summer is here and the patio at Adega on 45th, one of the warmest and sunniest in the Okanagan, is ready to supply the necessities of wine touring: shade, food, and wine. The shade comes from the vine-covered pergola and the food comes from the handy deli fridge near the tasting bar. Of course, the wine is generally in plentiful supply but you might have to act quickly for some of them. The rosé in particular has developed an intensely loyal following. “It sells out every summer,” explains tasting room manager Racyne Farinha. “Our 2013 sold out in a month last year.” The Adega team has had a great year racking up awards for their wine portfolio. They entered five wines in the Best of BC Wine Awards and all five brought home medals. The ‘13 Pinot Gris took a Gold, the ‘13 Viognier, ‘12 Cabernet Franc Racyne is looking forward to pouring you a taste of and ‘12 Merlot won Adega’s fabulous line up of wines.

AN EPIC SEASON AHEAD FOR FAIRVIEW CELLARS

A

s a grape grower, Fairview Cellars owner Bill Eggert is acutely aware of the variations between seasons. Temperature averages and rainfall levels over the spring have an effect on how the vines will progress through the rest of the season. “2015 is one of the earliest years I’ve ever seen in the Okanagan,” says Bill. “We are at least 2 full weeks ahead.” He notes that in 2014 his vineyard was in full bloom by June 15th while this year it was June 1st. There was good bud break in the spring followed by tremendous growth because of regular spring rains, which allowed the shoots to reach the top trellis wire by the beginning of June. The first 2013 red to be released will be the Bucket O’ Blood. A preview tasting of this vintage had aromas that said, “Please drink me!” while the palate said, “I will get better with age.” Look for this wine near August 1st and consume or cellar on your own terms. Also due for release mid-summer is the 2014 Sauvignon Blanc. Showing an intensely fruity nose and a palate of ripe apples, the acidity is less bracing than previous vintages, perfectly reflecting the hotter growing season. ~ Luke Whittall

too. 2014 Splash, with a basketful of tropical notes, is a surefire summer pleaser. Because production is increasing in the River Stone vineyard, this will be winery’s last year as a participant in the Garagiste North: Small Guys Wine Festival events in Vancouver and Kelowna (only under 2000 case producers allowed). But as the winery’s reputation grows, so does interest from tour companies, which are bringing more visitors to the stunning location just outside of Oliver on Tuc-el-Nuit Road. With 7 vintages under his belt, Ted has kept aside small quantities of red library wines—2009 Corner Stone and Cabernet Franc and 2010 Corner Stone, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon—which he will be offering on selected Saturdays this summer. A blend of 5 Bordeaux grape varieties— Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Malbec, and Petit Verdot— which are all grown in the vineyards on the Golden Mile. CALLIOPE WINES – FRESH AND FRUIT FORWARD

I

f you’ve travelled through southern British Columbia you may have run into Canada’s smallest bird, a tiny hummingbird.

To pay homage to this lovely little creature, the Wyse Family, founders of Burrowing Owl Estate Winery, introduced a line up of wines under the label Calliope, a word from Greek origin meaning ‘beautiful voice’. The Wyse family is known for their efforts in wildlife preservation, in particular wild birds. Grapes for Calliope wines are carefully sourced from local vineyards in the South Okanagan and Similkameen Valleys. The wines are crafted to showcase bright, fresh, fruit flavours

and crisp acidity. Bottled under screw cap, these varieties and blends are meant for early consumption, and oak is used conservatively if at all. These are perfect summer sippers, the perfect patio wines. The Calliope 2014 Figure 8 White is a blend of predominantly Pinot Gris, Chardonnay and Gerwürztraminer, with a splash of Viognier and Sauvignon Blanc, and is full of fresh pink grapefruit, mango, apricot, melon and fresh herbaceous aromas. ehringer Brothers Winery on the Golden Mile in Oliver has played a big part in the evolution of the BC wine industry. Their wines have been consistently recognized in competitions from year to year and they have a loyal following of customers who appreciate both their quality wines and their reasonable prices. The 2014 “Old Vines” Auxerrois was awarded a Best of Class and a Gold Medal at the 2015 Los Angeles International Wine Awards as well as a Bronze Medal at the 2015 Great Northwest Wine Competition. These 30-year-old vines have produced a wine that is a mellow gold in the glass with a nose filled with honey, grapefruit and mineral notes. The firm, mineral notes follow through on the palate with soft, ripe

Gala apple characteristics to round it out. The finish is silky, presenting notes of white grapefruit zest, candied lemon, soft apple and more minerals. The Auxerrois grape is named for its origins in the town of Auxerre, France. There are now between 800 to 1000 acres planted in Germany, although it is still primarily used for blending. It is beginning to achieve recognition as a fabulous wine in its own right. The 2014 Dry Rock Unoaked Chardonnay has also been a consistent performer on the competition front, bringing home a Bronze Medal from the 2015 Los Angeles International Wine Awards and another Bronze Medal from the 2015 Great Northwest Wine Competition. The wine is light gold in the glass with a bright nose that is loaded with ripe apples and just a little bit peachy. The palate is fresh and bright as well, with more ripe apple, as well as notes of pineapple, butter and cream. The finish is creamy with soft lemon notes. ~Courtney Fossett

C

aroline and Tim Cottrill opened the doors to Robin Ridge Winery just outside of Keremeos in 2008 when the Similkameen Valley was just starting to get noticed for its quality grape growing. Fast-forward to 2015 and not only is the Similkameen on the radar of BC wine lovers but a distinctive style has emerged from wineries in the Valley. The portfolio of wines at Robin Ridge has its own distinct and consistent style that fits well within the Similkameen and, like all fine wine; it reflects how the grapes are grown. Growing top quality grapes is paramount for Tim. “I want the wines to express what I do in the vineyard,” says Tim who clearly loves working in the vineyard. Tim has trained most of his vines using the

Geneva Double-Curtain trellising system in which the grape vines grow tall, straight trunks with the shoots pointing down. The fruit is higher than is typical and the result is fruit with deeper colour and more tannins. Nowhere is this more consistently evident than in their Gamay, Pinot Noir, and Merlot, which deliver both qualities consistently each vintage. Similkameen summers are hot and Kim English, the official wine shop hostess Extraordinaire, will have two refreshing rosé wines available to help beat the heat. The 2013 Flicker, a Chardonnay and Pinot Noir blend, delivers the best of both worlds - cherries, cantaloupes, and bright floral notes. The 2014 Pink Flamingo, made with organic Sovereign Coronation grapes, is a tangy sipper with beautiful aromas of orange blossoms and peach skins. Look for Robin Ridge at the BBQ King and at farmer’s markets throughout the summer or stop into the wine shop on your next visit to the Similkameen Valley. ~Luke Whittall

 CLOS DUE SOLEIL—A BRAND NEW WINERY IN THE SIMILKAMEEN

C

los du Soleil in the Similkameen Valley has always tried to be a unique destination and now with a new winery and tasting room, it is proud to contribute something new to the Similkameen’s wine scene. “The community of wineries in the Similkameen has been working hard at building the reputation of the valley,” says managing director and winemaker Michael Clark. “With the growing tourism industry here, we’re glad to offer an important new destination.” That destination is now a brand new winery with a beautifully bright

tasting room to welcome visitors. Decorated with lots of wood (supplied from the old honey barn that was formerly their wine shop), the new tasting room features a large L-shaped bar and many windows to see the vineyard as well as the production area inside the winery. Even though the tasting room is easily three times as big as theold one, none of the rustic charm or atmosphere is lost. “We’ve expanded, but it’s still intimate,” says Michael. “It’s just a lot more comfortable for tasting wines.” Larger retail space also means that they can offer more special items

for sale including back vintages and large format bottles. Tasting wine is only part of the experience. Guests are welcome to experience the organic vineyard up close on their own. A large picnic area nestled among the vines is also available. Vineyard tours are

au Vivre Winery in Cawston has a good-sized portfolio of wines with lots of different styles to choose from but it is Pinot Noir that has really put them on the map. Two back-to-back Lieutenant Governor’s Awards for Excellence in BC Wine will do that. The newly released 2013 vintage of Pinot Noir is looking to grab some of that action as well. It has already won a Gold Medal at the All Canadian Wine Championships and was also voted Best Pinot Noir by the BC Wine Appreciation Society in a double blind tasting that also included international Pinot Noirs. But there’s more than beautiful Pinot Noir at Eau Vivre. Winemaker Anthony Buchanan’s refined approach to Pinot also works well with other varieties including Viognier, Malbec, and Cabernet Franc. Full-flavoured as they are, these wines retain the French-style elegance that marks Eau Vivre’s genuine house style. Even the highly aromatic varieties Gewürztraminer, Riesling, and the full throttle white and red blends Cinq Blanc and

Buddhafull all maintain this style beautifully.

The Eau Vivre tasting room in Cawston is a fine stopping point close to Highway 3 but removed enough to be tranquil. It is small and cozy but the picnic area is large, open, and surrounded by greenery so all you can see are the vines and the mountains. It has shade and is an oasis to enjoy on a wine tour where relaxing spots to stop are not always easy to find. ven after 10 years, there’s still a first time for everything. Forbidden Fruit’s 2013 Caught Apricot Mistelle and the 2011 Earth Series Merlot both won DoublePlatinum awards at Winepress

Northwest Platinum Judging making this the first time ever that a Northwest winery has won Double-Platinum in both grape and fruit wine categories in the same competition. “The Caught was the

fourth highest ranking wine in the competition,” says Steve. A special new label for the grape wines riffs on the farm’s location at the end of Sumac Road. The new label is called “Dead End” but it also reflects the no-turningback creativity that has permeated everything that Steve Venables and Kim Brind’Amour have done in their decade of making wine. Dead End will feature four wines - one white and three red - as wine shop exclusives. “Skrewed” (Pinot Gris, Riesling, and Sauvignon Blanc), “Catch 22” (Cabernet Franc), “No

Return” (Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc), and “Game Over” (Tannat and Malbec) will be the lineup of bold wines created by winemaker Nathan Venables. Of course, all wines are made with certified organic grapes. Art has always been important to the experience at Forbidden Fruit which features paintings, barrel stave art, jewelry and glass vases. Forbidden Fruit will be one of four sites hosting “Art in the Garden” exhibits with wine tastings and food pairings outside in the orchard near the river. A drop-in event, the exhibit will be all day July 25th and 26th. If a day trip isn’t enough, you can always plan to stay longer.   MEYER FAMILY VINEYARD GOES GLOBAL

A

traveler in London might be surprised to find a healthy stock of Canadian wine in the historic district of Covent Garden. While thoroughly enjoyed at home, it is still something of a rare occurrence for our wines to cross our borders, and even rarer still that they ever ‘cross the pond’ to fill European wine racks. Fortunately, this has never deterred Jak Meyer and Janice Stevens of Meyer Family Vineyards from crafting wines that are increasingly finding a place in the fiercely competitive world of internationally acclaimed wine. As their property in Okanagan Falls is particularly accommodating to Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, the Meyer Family has built their reputation upon these prestigious varietals. Winemaker Chris Carson (an international himself, having trained with wineries in France and New Zealand) has worked with the family to produce four different labels of Pinot Noir and five different labels of Chardonnay. Their boutique size (they harvest only 35 acres) keeps

their production at a modest 6000 cases a year, which allows them to be meticulous during the harvest and production. This incredible attention to detail has allowed Meyer Family Vineyards to establish themselves not only in America, but also in the selective markets of Asia (in Japan, the Philippines, Hong Kong, and mainland China) and Europe (in Switzerland and England) where they are currently the only Canadian wine available at every Mark and Spencer in the country. It’s a prominent list that’s likely to grow, with distributers in Germany, Australia, and South America showing interest in this little winery with a big reputation. For those who want to take their pick of these esteemed wines before they pass customs, joining the newly established Meyer Family Wine Club is essential. Each member is guaranteed 12 bottles a year and because the production of some of these wines is so limited, membership is the only way to get a hold of specific labels and new varietals such as the Riesling.

PINOT BLANC X2 AT KRAZE LEGZ WINERY

W

hen discussion turns to the grape that produces the best wine in British Columbia, Pinot Blanc is usually amongst one of the first to be mentioned. Based on the success

that Kraze Legz Winery owners Sue and Gerry Thygesen have had with the varietal, it would be hard to argue differently. Inevitably, each vintage is beautifully balanced, crisp and clean, with well-delineated fruit flavours and the brilliant acidity makes for a perfect match with many dishes, notably oysters, or deliciously all on its own. Whether it is released under the SKAHA Vineyard label or as The

Bee’s Knees, this is undeniably a 100% Pinot Blanc to be reckoned with. Each vintage has been a success since it was first produced in 2009. At major Canadian and International competitions their Pinot Blancs have harvested Platinum, three Gold and six Silver Medals. The trend continues into 2015 with a Best in Category at the Canadian Oyster Wine Competition (winner two of the last three years) “What we’re seeing is all our wines are getting even better with each vintage—the roots of our aging vines travel deeper into the fossilized sandstone and shale, specific to this site, and with each vintage those attributes are becoming more and more pronounced,” said Gerry. he African proverb “Where the rooster crows there is a village” was never more true than it will be Saturday, September 12th, when Red Rooster Winery hosts the Naramata Tailgate Party, 6:30 to 9:30 pm. Red Rooster welcomes on-site its Naramata Bench Wineries Association colleagues, a collaborative group of 24 distinguished wineries nestled along the lakeview route between Penticton and Naramata. And this style reflects their personal brand too—owners Dawn and Doug Lennie are all about protecting their good earth and community. Dawn explains, “we share our spent wheat mash with local farmers--currently Jay and Wendy (at Bella Wines) as well as 3 or 4 other local Naramata small home based farms and Andy’s Animal Acres.” These farmers recycle the mash for use as fertilizer and to feed their animals. The patio has a killer view on to Okanagan Lake, where visitors can order a cocktail and linger. Dawn also said, “We are also going to be offering distillery tours/tastings. Currently we have one time slot scheduled for Friday and one on Saturday that people can pre-book. The cost is $8.00 per person and includes a tasting of our full line-up of products.” Doug, who happens to also have a construction business, built the

 AN ODE TO MERLOT AT SERENDIPITY WINERY

T

his is a wine to age,” Judy Kingston tells a visitor as they sit on a sun-washed patio at Serendipity Winery. The reference is to the 2011 Merlot they, along with Judy’s daughter and winemaker-intraining Katie O’Kell, are savouring. “I call it my Ode to Merlot.” Judy wanted to produce a Merlot that goes beyond the lighter table wine styles that have become common. “I wanted to produce a bigger, fullbodied wine that would pair well with food, which is our top priority at Serendipity.”

Check the web site for more information. 2011 Merlot Cropping to very low levels and taking longer in every way to produce, including 4-5 years aging in the cellar pays big dividends. The smooth, velvety mouthfeel is complemented by aromas of vanilla and cassis, with flavours of cinnamon, mocha and cherry. Red meats pair beautifully. 2013 Viognier “Hand planted, hand everything” from the Serendipity is a tropical delight, boasting notes of orange blossom and tangerine, with hints of blood orange and apricot. Not surprisingly, it won Gold at the 2014 All Canadian Wine Championships. A touch of coconut teases. Judy, a Frenchtrained chef, likes to serve it with goat cheese fritters drizzled with a dressing made with a grapefruit juice reduction, oil and vinegar.

he Bonfire Grill’s Grant de Montreuil and his team are committed to carrying on the vision of their founder and original developer, Derek Trethewy, who passed away recently. De Montreuil spoke recently about Derek’s life, his passion and his vision for the resort and its culinary gardens. “Derek was passionate about our culinary garden. He envisioned a full farm market that includes our food and products from other growers. He loved to sit and chat with people there,” de Montreuil says. The Cove’s culinary garden welcomes the general public along with hotel guests, and they’re committed to leadingedge sustainability. They have a comprehensive composting program in place, and de Montreuil

says they are very cautious in their approach. “All of this was part of his legacy,” de Montreuil explains. “Derek was a philanthropist and strong supporter of community involvement.“ Trethewey, who was involved in the conception of The Cove Lakeside Resort, also developed the Outback in Vernon, The Lakes residential area in Lake Country and Bowen Island Lodge. He was planning a future project in Hawaii and lived between Kelowna, Vancouver and Kauai. SPIERHEAD WINERY COMBINES FLAVOUR WITH FUN

n the benchlands of Southeast Kelowna, overlooking miles of vineyard, orchards and Okanagan Lake, sits SpierHead Winery. Its award-winning wines and distinctive special events are drawing visitors from the Okanagan and afar.

SpierHead wines are gathering prestigious awards in growing numbers. Dan French, sales manager at Spierhead, says the recognition is coming from high places. “In August of 2014, we held a Pinot Noir blending party for our wine club members. Members tasted several Pinot Noir clones and were asked to identify four barrels that, in their view, would make the best Pinot Noir blend. Based on their consensus, we made a wine which we called Pinot Noir Club Consensus. It was entered

into the Los Angeles International Wine Competition at the LA County Fair, where it was given 91 points and received a Gold Medal,” he explained. The SpierHead Wine Club enjoys some very appealing benefits. Just recently, members were treated to a sample of every Pinot Noir the winery has produced since 2010, in an on-site vertical tasting. The general public is invited to an intriguing new program that SpierHead is initiating.  SUMMERHILL PYRAMID WINERYHONOURING OUR PAST, CELEBRATING THE PRESENT AND RESPECTFULLY PLANNING FOR THE FUTURE

C

hange is nothing new at Summerhill Pyramid Winery. As a leader in organics and biodynamics and a world class producer of sparkling wine the winery evolves continuously. On my visit in May some of the changes were dramatic. Others, no less important, were invisible to a visitor.

Across from the building that houses the winery, tasting room and Sunset Organic Bistro, a large excavation site was teeming with workers building forms for a concrete www.winetrails.ca

foundation. Upon that foundation a 20,000-square-foot building will become Summerhill’s new storage warehouse, replacing an equivalent rental space in Kelowna. It will not only allow all wine to be stored on site in a temperature- and humiditycontrolled environment and allow easy access, but it will reduce the winery’s carbon footprint as it cuts down on trucking needs. As an added bonus, it will accommodate car parking on the roof. An additional 53 parking spots will be added for the convenience of guests. Inside the main building, renovations to the tasting room and bistro have improved the traffic flow, opened up the available space, and created a quiet ambience in the dining area with the installation of cork flooring. As Canada’s most visited winery, the changes were made to improve customer experience within the facility. A new menu greets diners at Sunset Organic Bistro, reflecting the tastes of new chef Jonas Stadtlander and his team. Additional organic and biodynamic gardens have been created on site under the supervision of Gabe Cipes, one of founder and president Steve Cipes’ three sons who work at the winery. Gabe also has a new lowtech greenhouse that allows him to extend the growing season of plants used to supply the bistro. As a regular visitor to Summerhill, I have come to assume that I will see CEO Ezra Cipes, winemaker Eric von Krosigk and, often, Steve Cipes, when I am on site. I emailed Ezra and got a reply. “I am in England.” For the third time in five years a Canadian delegation of wine and cider makers was hosting a “Canada Calling” event on the eve of the annual London Wine Fair. Canadian producers were pouring samples and educating British wine tradespeople about the burgeoning Canadian wine scene. The event was hosted in Canada House, a familiar sight on Trafalgar Square to Canadians visiting London. Another message arrived from Ezra: “I got a bottle of Cipes Gabriel delivered to Prince Charles today.”

He also suggested I could talk to the winemaker for this story. When I asked Tarrah MacPherson, vice-president operations, about von Krosigk I got another surprise. He was in Portugal, scouting out sources for bottle corks in one of the world’s premier producers. Steve? He was in Texas! Tarrah came to the rescue. The renovated bistro and new menu are clearly a hit. On the Victoria Day weekend more than 200 diners enjoyed lunch each day, and one day a record was set for most lunches served. Evening diners arrived in droves. What about wine sales, I wondered? International sales are increasing dramatically and sales in the wine shop are setting records. With an increasing number of Summerhill organic wines—the Alive label has been embraced by the public— and biodynamic farming practices taking hold, customers are finding the wines to be more and more in line with their own values. The dream that has guided Steve Cipes for a quarter century, one that made him a visionary in the wine business, is now being embraced by the public, which increasingly wants a closer connection to where its food is grown and produced, and to the people involved. Summerhill Pyramid Winery is ready, willing and able to meet those expectations. But Summerhill has always been about more than the wine. Nearly hidden from view from the bistro, near Mallam House (perhaps the oldest existing structure in the area built by white settlers) is a Makwala Kekuli. The Kekuli is a replica of a sacred earth house used by indigenous peoples. Log construction is covered by earth, but logs rot eventually. The earth has been cleared off the structure and rotted logs are being replaced. Nothing to do with wine, but everything to do with what Summerhill Pyramid Winery is all about—honouring our past, celebrating the present and respectfully planning for the future. ~ Lorne Eckersley

 A CELEBRATION OF APPLES & GRAPES AT THE VIEW WINERY

T

he addition of the Wards Hard Cider to the popular wine lineup at The View is a natural—Jennifer Molgat’s greatgrandfather, George Washington Ward planted apple trees on the family’s Southeast Kelowna property nearly a century ago. More recently, her father Chris Turton had the foresight to replace some of the traditional fresh market varieties with a collection of cider apple varieties such as Bramley, Jersely Chisel, Bulmers Norman, Porters Perfection, Lord Lambourne, Belle de Boskoop and Cox’s Orange Pippin. Cider apples

are thick skinned and tart—perfect for making aromatic, fruity ciders with a nice crisp finish. A refreshing thirst quencher, Wards Hard Apple Cider is a great alternative for people on gluten free diets. Many beer drinkers are embracing hard ciders as their beverage of choice, with the crisp, spicy flavours providing a nice change from hops and malt. “Like biting into a crisp apple,” is the note I made when Jennifer poured a sample of Wards Picker’s Hut Premium Cider. A second sample, Wards Picker’s Hut Winter Spice, proved to be a surprise because it was not a typical winter cider spice bomb.  A WINERY DESTINATION IN DOWNTOWN KELOWNA – SANDHILL WINES

S

andhill, in constructing a grand tasting room in their historic Richter Street winery last year, has easily created the most comfortable winery destination in Kelowna. As the marquis brand for Calona Wines, Sandhill is producing top quality wines from six unique vineyards throughout the Okanagan and Similkameen Valleys. While they are proud of these vineyards they also recognize that the grapes don’t just grow themselves. They honour the grape growers, some of whom have spent their whole lives on their vineyards, with photos of both the people and their vineyards on the walls. Both are important to the Sandhill story for visitors. Once the grapes arrive at the winery, they are turned over to master winemaker Howard Soon. lot of the thought that owners Curtis Krouzel and Sheri-Lee Turner-Krouzel put into planning 50th Parallel Estate Winery revolved around Pinot Noir and Pinot Gris. So it’s little wonder that these wines receive much of the attention in the vineyard and in the cellar. The vineyards were oriented so as to provide shade to Pinot Noir clusters (which are particularly susceptible to sun

damage) at the hottest time of day in the summer. Winemaker Grant Stanley has been famously enamored with the variety and brings a considerable amount of knowledge to 50th Parallel’s top wine as well as the other wines in the portfolio. All of their wines have now won major awards at wine competitions but the Pinot Gris in particular has been getting a lot of the

buzz this year. It took the top prize, a Double Gold Medal, for that variety at the All Canadian Wine Championships. Three other Gold Medal winners in that same category came from three of 50th Parallel’s neighbours on The Scenic Sip wine route. wines made from Chardonnay, Gewürztraminer, and Riesling, is available to taste at the winery’s tasting bar. Located in the near end of their winery, guests are immersed in theambiance of a working wine cellar while tasting the current releases. Completed in 2014, it is a far cry from their original Quonset hut winery, which used to be located nearby. LOVING LIFE IN THE VINES POPLAR GROVE CHEESE

The success of Poplar Grove Cheese is testimony to Gitta’s acumen as a businesswoman and cheese maker, but she has no plans to expand her business ventures. To grow a business often means loss of control over quality, and Gitta’s commitment to providing her clients with the best possible product, in both the vineyard and the cheesery, ensures the focus is on quality, not quantity. During the busy spring and summer months, life can be hectic, but in the vineyard she finds peace and contentment. Gitta’s life has taken many turns, as a nurse, traveler, businesswoman and mother, but all paths have led to this point. Amongst the vines and weather you can find her tending the grapes on the southern slopes of the Naramata Bench. The landscape has changed over the years. When she arrived there were just 17 wineries in British Columbia; today there are over 200. While many mourn the loss of orchards, Gitta is glad to see the prosperity wine tourism has brought to the wineries and farmers. She sees a bright future for an Okanagan wine industry that holds a vision of quality production while maintaining a focus on local community and sustainable growth. Originally from Denmark, Gitta has made her home in Naramata,

where her connection to the land here has grown with the vines she planted. She is one of the many women in BC, from Cawston to the Kooteneys, who are the backbone of their homes, communities, and the boutique businesses that keep the economy strong. ~ Henrietta Poirier

hen Gitta Pederson moved to Naramata in 1993, she helped establish the Poplar Grove winery hands on, from taking down the existing apple orchard with a chainsaw, to planting and tending the vines. Today, she’s still hands on with six acres of her own vineyard where two acres of Pinot Gris, two of Merlot and two of Cabernet Franc are sold to Lock & Worth and Laughing Stock Wineries. In those early days it was difficult to make a living, but a passion for the land and looking after the vines sustained the commitment through harder financial times. The vines grew and so did the winery and since the perfect accompaniment to wine is cheese, Gitta helped establish, and now owns, Poplar Grove Cheese. Gitta knows every step of her business, from planting and pruning in the vineyard and fixing the tractor and irrigation, to knowing how to make all varieties of cheese. “Cheese making has it’s challenges, and like raising children, each one has it’s own unique characteristics and each one is loved for their unique qualities,” she explains, from the subtle zing of the creamy Naramata Blue to the feistier bite of Tiger Blue. These two wines would take everything we’ve learned from a decade of viticulture and winemaking and present it in a unique, South Valley style. We wanted these wines to show our style and focus on quality to a broader group of wine drinkers.” But how to sell them in a market that offers consumers thousands of choices? “The biggest difficulty with introducing a new line like this is that it has to be compelling enough for people to just want to pick it up and try it,” John says. “In essence it had to be so interesting just sitting on the shelf that it gets the first chance, and then having the wine in the

bottle be impressive enough that people would want to get it again, and again.” Enter design guru Bernie HadleyBeauregard, whose Brandever firm has won countless awards for labels like Blasted Church and Dirty Laundry. Bernie has a simple belief that drives what he does. “The label gets the first date, the wine gets the second.” “I think we have a lot in common with Bernie and the way he looks at things,” John says. “With this new project we were envisioning he was a perfect fit. He brought his whole team and dropped by the tasting bar unannounced. It was a weekend in August, so our outdoor patio tasting bar was at full clip. I think we had a Queen concert playing, kids are running around on the lawn, their parents sitting at the bar on the edge of the bowl tasting wine or relaxing with a glass. The winery is a pretty wild spot, really upbeat. We play a lot of rock concerts and it’s generally just a really fun place to be. There are not many tasting bars with such a vibrant atmosphere--it’s really a unique experience.

“When we spoke with Bernie the next week, he said he couldn’t connect our labels to the staff and environment at the winery. We decided together on creating a new series that captured the vibe at the Coyote Bowl tasting bar-something that complimented the serious, traditional style of our Church & State labels.” “There is an incredible amount of cheap wine that is embellished with faux-chateau labels, the lipstick-on-a-pig scenario,” Bernie says. “People believe that it must be good if it has such a stately label. That, to me, is a disservice.” Consumers, he says, are overwhelmed by choice. Brandever and Church and State went to work, creating the Lost Inhibitions series of 100 labels, each containing a phrase that will trigger a memory from conversations past. “We worked with Bernie to create Lost Inhibitions,” says John. “His team put in countless hours crafting each letter, which were hand cut and stitched from felts and fabrics in all Karen and Emily created over 1,200 letters and symbols.”

  • 2 (8 inch) pie shells, baked • 2 1/2 quartsfresh strawberries • 1 cup white sugar • 2 tablespoons cornstarch • 1 cup boiling water •1 (3-oz) package strawberry flavored gelatin

In a saucepan, mix together the sugar and cornstarch; make sure to blend cornstarch in completely. Add boiling water, and cook over medium heat until mixture thickens. Remove from heat. Add gelatin mix, and stir until smooth.

LAVENDER HONEY HAZELNUT BISCOTTI

J

udie has redefined biscotti, meaning twice baked cookie, by crafting local ingredients harvested in the fall from the Meadow Vista Farm and friends backyard gardens. A staple food of the Roman Legions as it has a long shelf life, it is traditionally served with a drink into which the cookie is dunked (Vin Santo, a dessert wine found in Italy) we love to pair it with Ostara and Libra for a yummy treat in the afternoon or wrapped in parchment and given as gifts to friends. Make sure to visit Judie at her new tasting room in Southeast Kelowna!

• 2 ¼ cups all-purpose flour • 1 teaspoon baking powder • ½ teaspoon baking soda • ¼ teaspoon salt • 2/3 cup granulated sugar • 3 large eggs • 3 tablespoons honey • ½ teaspoon pure vanilla extract • 2 tablespoons orange zest • ½ cup coarsely chopped hazelnuts • 1 tablespoon dried culinary lavender blossoms

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper In one bowl for dry, sift flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt together. In a second bowl, whisk sugar and eggs to a light lemon color; stir in honey, vanilla extract, orange zest, chopped hazelnuts and lavender blossoms. Sprinkle dry ingredients over the egg mixture; fold in until the dough is just combined. Use just enough flour on your hands to prevent sticking, you don’t want the logs to be covered with flour, shape the dough into two logs. Place the log on the parchment lined baking sheet and with your hands, pat and shape each piece into a loaf approximately 3 inches wide, 7 inches long, and 3/4-inch high. Bake 25 minutes or until dough pops back up when lightly pressed with a finger. You cannot judge the cooking by the color. The biscotti shouldn’t change color during the second baking, so poke them to tell if they’re done. They should feel dry and offer some resistance. Remove from oven and cool 10 minutes on a wire rack. Reduce oven to 275 degrees F. Using a long serrated knife, cut logs diagonally into 1/2-inch thick slices. Turn the slices over, onto their sides; return slices, on baking sheets, to oven. Bake another 15 minutes. Do not crowd the biscotti slices on the baking sheet for their second baking as they need the hot air to circulate to enable them to crisp up evenly. Biscotti will continue to crisp up as they cool so do not over bake. Remove from oven and cool completely on wire racks. Store biscotti in an airtight container.
