hen the local Farmers Market is not open, Urban Fare Kelowna offers the next best thing! So much more than a supermarket, Urban Fare has become a unique shopping experience allowing shoppers a choice of as many local products as possible. Not just meats and produce either – store manager Todd Henry and his dedicated team have sourced an incredible array of products from local artisans as well as farmers. For example, in the bakery section of the store, it is thrilling to see the gorgeous baguettes and loaves created by one of our favorite local bakers Monika Walker of Okanagan Grocery Artisan Bread. Delivered fresh daily, Monika’s organic artisan bread is the highest possible quality. Make sure to take note of her famous Bernard Callebaut Chocolate bread! Monika the Baker (as she is affectionately known) has two other locations with her main Bake Shop at 1151979 Windsor Road and her flagship mini market at Guisichan Village 2355 Gordon Drive. www.okanagangrocery.com Next door to the bread display, you will find a glass counter worthy of Paris. And I’m not kidding – renowned local chocolatier and

pastry chef Sandrine Martin-Raffault is the Parisian dessert artist who is filling those shelves with her exquisite creations. From macaroons and pear croissants to decadent small and large cakes as well as her signature chocolates and pretty chocolate bars, you will forget that you are in a large store instead of a patisserie. Sandrine’s French Pastry & Chocolate is located at 1865 Dilworth Drive. www.sandrinepastry.com Little Creek Salad Dressings is truly an Okanagan success story as well as being a pioneer in the local artisanal food production world. Little Creek’s creator Donna Denison is a well-loved member of our food and farm community and continues to make magic with her salad dressings that are made on her beautiful organic farm in West Kelowna. Now with three other varieties: Spicy Strawberry, Cherry Balsamic and Okanagan Caesar added to her Original super selling dressing repertoire, one can enchant every salad with a taste of organic Little Creek magic. www.littlecreekdressing.com Urban Fare offers a large deli, coffee bean bar and also has the largest variety of cheeses in the Okanagan – many local. The in-store restaurant is always busy with a huge variety of delicious cuisine to choose from –

eat in or take out. This year the addition of a patio space has been created offering a lovely option to dine al fresco. And they are licensed!! Of course, local wines are on the menu with favorites from The View Winery and Tantalus Vineyards. To celebrate our beloved farmers and local artisan community, Urban Fare is proud to announce real Farmers Market days scheduled for September 7th and 8th in the parking lot outside. Come out and meet some of Urban Fare’s farmers and suppliers and have the chance to buy direct! Farmers like Brian Harper and Ben Davidson from Salmon Arm whose family corn farm keeps the corn stack in Urban Fare’s produce section piled high when in season. The corn comes from their Stinking Rows Garlic Farm. Brian is a Professional Agrologist who, along with his wife Alana and family, have been growing sweet corn on their environmentally sustainable land in the Shuswap for over 15 years with a family history of farming for well over 100 years! This is a supermarket that I can feel good about supporting. I love the staff, I love the layout and I love their philosophy to support all things local! ~ Jennifer Schell B.C. Note

s we sadly bid farewell to one of the best, old-fashioned HOT Okanagan summers that we have had in years, we can look forward to an equally beautiful autumn. The good weather is holding and the harvest season is about to begin. While we continue celebrating the fruits of our industry’s labour this fall, the wineries are still extremely busy at harvest and crush, the farmers busy with tree fruit harvest and vegetable farmers remain in full swing offering plentiful crops of autumn’s treasures like squash, heirloom tomatoes and corn. Make sure to relish every moment of the farm fresh produce while you can, and take time to preserve some to enjoy during the winter months. There are exciting winery updates and news of fall wine releases shared in the following pages of this issue as well as great restaurant news. Congratulations to RauDZ Regional Table who are opening micro.bar.bites in Kelowna! We have a couple of special recipes shared in our recipe section including one from celebrated island author Bill Jones’ delicious new book The

Deerholme Mushroom BookFrom Forgaging to Feasting. We are also introducing one of our local food heros, Helen Kennedy from Arlo’s Honey Farm in this edition – look forward to this becoming a regular feature. We are featuring our celebrated friends who provide us the very necessary service of being a great coffee house. The ones listed are my personal favorites and I adore not only there life-blood high quality coffee, but also their delicious food and wonderful, welcoming personalities – the combination of which provides me with the fuel I need to make the best of every day. Yay for coffee folk! Happy crush to all of my winery friends and happy harvest to our hardworking farmers – we treasure each and every one of you and give thanks to you all for sharing your passion and filling our tables with good food and wine. PS: This summer I was thrilled to be nominated and accepted into the prestigious BC chapter of Les Dames Escoffier! Check out our website to learn more about what we do: lesdames.ca/ - Dame Jennifer

RECLINE RIDGE’S WINNING COOL CLIMATE VARIETALS

O

ur whites are crisp, refreshing and very fruit forward with highly aromatic properties,” say owners Graydon and Maureen Ratzlaff of Recline Ridge Winery. “Wonderful on their own, but they pair very well with a variety of foods.” The red wines at Recline Ridge, which specializes in cool climate varietals, are generally lighter in style than others, but still present full fruit aromas and flavours.

“We have a full line of whites, reds, a rosé and dessert wines, so something for everyone.” Recline Ridge’s setting and wine shop in Tappen are unique and stunning. The patio is designated as a licensed picnic area, so wine can be purchased for consumption on the patio outside the log cabin wine shop. “This micro-climate supports lush tree growth, including Cedar and Larch, so the views are spectacular, with the mountains rising high above the lake,” says Graydon. “Our wine shop is absolutely unique, originally constructed as a post-and-beam log home for a family in Japan. The patio overlooks the oldest section of the vineyard and has a spectacular view.” Recline Ridge wines continue to win awards in a variety of competitions and fans are numerous. In the summer the winery released 2011 vintages of its Gamay Noir and its red blend--Hawk’s Haven. Other releases were 2010 Marechal Foch (“deep, dark fruit notes, and a smoky finish”), 2011 Make Me Blush, and 2012 Kerner and Bacchus (“All wonderful, showing off their varietal characteristics and intensity of flavours.”) For fans of late harvest-style dessert whites, the 2012 Hummingbird’s Kiss is now available. ~ Dona Sturmanis

LARCH HILLS WINERY- RACKS UP THE MEDALS THIS YEAR

H

azel Manser, co-owner of Larch Hills Winery with her husband Jack, is very pleased with the awards their wines picked up at the Northwest Wine Summit 2013 competition. “To win ten medals is very impressive,” she says. “We did really well at this competition,” she says. There were one Gold, four Silvers and five Bronze. Marechal Foch Special Reserve was awarded the Gold. Larch Hills is known for its outstanding cool climate wines. Located at a high, scenic location near Salmon Arm, they have varieties that are generally not available in the rest of BC. Ortega, Madeleine Angevine, and Siegerrebe are the whites; Agria is the red. Gewürztraminer, Marechal

Foch and Merlot are sourced from contract vineyards. All grapes are crushed, processed and the wine is made right on the premises. “The summer was good for us,” says Hazel. “We had many visitors. Not too many from Calgary because of the flooding, but people from the Edmonton area and a few more Americans. Every season is a pleasure.” Larch Hills has released a number of new wines including Merlot, Marechal Foch including a Reserve, new Lemberger, Ortega, Siegerrebe, new Madeline Angevine, Riesling and a new Rosé. “Larch Hills is known for its good wines and hospitality,” says Hazel. “We have many repeat customers.”

airview Cellars owner Bill Eggert prefers tradition over trends. “I believe that wine making is a traditional thing,” says Eggert. “I don’t want to change my marketing plan every three years with a new label and brand.” One change to Fairview labels will be the location names. Bill explains, “I’m going to identify wines that come from the estate, and the Golden Mile Bench. I want the customer to be confident with where the wines are grown.” Audits from the BC Wine Authority, of which Eggert is a supporter, will also help ensure that wines are coming from their stated location or origin. With his newly constructed cellar addition, Fairview is now in full production and will have lots to sell until the wine shop closes at the end of the harvest. “Some of

ou won’t find very many serious photos of the folks behind Squeezed Wines on their website. No, the Ferreira siblings - Christina, Michael, and Nicole - are having a blast with their new winery and it shows. “We don’t have a wine shop,” explains Christina Ferreira who handles Squeezed Wine’s marketing and sales in the BC interior. “All of the VQA stores have our wines.” As well, there are many other locations carrying their Squeezed Red, White and Pink including Village Green Mall liquor store in Vernon and Desert Country Wines in Oliver. Just like most wineries, customers can also order their wines online. Unlike most wineries, Squeezed lets you order a minimum of six bottles per shipment instead of the usual twelve bottles. It’s a more accessible way to pick up a couple of each of their wines directly from the winery. That accessibility is also evident

Y

in their wines, which have a smooth and approachable style. They are perfect for sipping, with or without food to accompany them. “They are wines designed to sit back with your friend and enjoy,” explains Christina. The gang will be out at some key festivals this fall including Feast of Fields in Vancouver, September 8th at Krause Berry Farm in Langley and the Festival of the Grape in Oliver on October 6th. They will also be featured at the Okanagan Food and Wine Film Festival that takes place September 13-15 in Kelowna. “Each film will have a food and wine reception immediately following the screening,” says Christina. Squeezed Wines will be included in the reception following the film “A Matter of Taste: Serving Up Paul Liebrandt” on September 14th. BURROWING OWL WINES GO FOR GOLD

T

he exceptional prestigious awards that Burrowing Owl wines have earned this year have definitely been a highlight,” says Midge Wyse, winery proprietor. “Showing well at international competitions has always been important. What is particularly rewarding is the depth of varieties awarded and especially the winery’s newest addition - Sauvignon Blanc.” Burrowing Owl 2009 Merlot and 2010 Cabernet Sauvignon won Golds at the L.A. International Wine Competition. The 2010 Merlot and 2011 Sauvignon Blanc were awarded Golds at the San Francisco International Wine Competition. The 2010 Cabernet Franc achieved a Lieutenant Governor’s Award. The 2011 Chardonnay won Gold at the Northwest Wine Summit and 2010 Athene a Gold at the Pacific Rim Wine Competition. And that’s just for starters. Midge is also very pleased with the success of Burrowing Owl’s new Calliope label and says the wines will now be available in government liquor stores, VQA stores, private wine stores and a growing number of restaurants.

October 9 and 10, The Sonora Room at Burrowing Owl Estate Winery will host two special Harvest Dinners to celebrate the autumn bounty from the South Okanagan. Following a reception will be a multi-course dinner in The Sonora Room prepared by the culinary team. Pair it all with wine selections from the library of Burrowing Owl Estate Winery and guests will experience the essence of wine country dining. Those interested in attending should call right away to book a spot. (1-877-498-0620). “All of the proceeds from our tasting fees go towards reestablishing the endangered species, the burrowing owl,” says Midge. “People really like to see another side of our passion and dedication and that we are having success like this. Our volunteers build artificial burrows in the wild for adults that have been born in captivity at a facility near Oliver. If chicks are then born in these burrows, then trained handlers band the chicks in order to monitor their return the following year.” ~ Dona Sturmanis

s the third full season of their wine shop draws to a close, Ted and Lorraine Kane at River Stone Estate Winery are keeping up the pace with some new releases. Slated for release are the 2012 Pinot Gris, which won a Double Gold in the All-Canadian Wine Awards, and the 2012 Splash, a blend of Pinot Gris and Gewürztraminer that now also includes a Viognier component. “It’s a really nice off-dry, aromatic, fruit-forward blend,” says Ted Kane proudly. Blending is something that Ted enjoys doing. He recently completed the blend for the 2011 vintage of Cornerstone, the flagship red Meritage blend that has been developing a loyal following. The 2011 Cornerstone will be bottled in the fall and will be released when it is ready. 2013 looks to be a fantastic vintage at River Stone and Ted is excited about what is happening in the vineyard. “It’s going to be another spectacular year,” says Ted. This will make it two great vintages in a row for River Stone. “The wines for 2012 are developing really nicely.”

The main event for the fall is happening on October 6th when three River Stone wines will be featured by Chef Darin Paterson at Bogner’s Lamb Fest in Penticton. “It’s going to be really great, local fare with Darin’s great style paired with our wines,” explains Ted. Although the wine had not yet been chosen at this time, many of the wines in River Stone’s portfolio would make excellent matches at a meal featuring lamb. Fans of River Stone can look forward to a wine club in the near future. “I’ve had lots of people asking me about it in the wine shop,” says Ted. “I’m working on ideas and incentives now.” ~ Luke Whittall Ted Kane

ith the arrival of fall, new wines have appeared on the shelves at Oliver Twist. The 2009 Merlot is coming! This classic Merlot is a medley of black cherry, blackberries and coffee notes. Be sure to try the 2012 Pinot Gris as well. This wine is a lush bouquet of delicate pears, stone fruit, melon and tropical fruits. The firmly acidic structure makes this a well-balanced wine and a great partner for a range of dishes, most notably seafood. The Rosado Splash has returned again as well. FUN & FLAVOUR AT HIDDEN CHAPEL WINERY

S

ince 2005 Deborah Wilde has been involved in the creation of a quaint, fun-themed, boutique style winery on her property near Oliver aptly named Hidden Chapel Winery. The land came with a tiny chapel, built to honour the faith of the previous owner, and Hidden Chapel Winery has created its theme around the cute-as-a-button building. Wines, aged in a below ground vault that keeps them at a constant temperature year-round, playfully repeat the chapel theme. Deborah, proprietor and winemaker, produces a great selection of wines from grapes grown on site and by nearby contractors. Among wines now available are: 2012 St. Vincent Named for the patron saint of wine, this Riesling-Viognier blend is fruity and floral, pairing nicely with fish and chicken dishes. 2012 The Flying Nun Sauvignon Blanc with plenty of acidity that will enhance dishes that include cheese and cream, as well as grilled seafood and salads. 2012 White Wedding A rare Sauvignon Blanc/Viognier/ Riesling blend whose citrus and

tropical fruit flavours will match with a wide variety of foods, even mildly spicy ones. 2010 Shotgun Wedding This Cabernet Sauvignon has a touch of Petit Verdot and promises to age beautifully. Grilled meat and much, much more, will benefit with a glass. 2011 Chapel Blend Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot combine to make another red that will cellar nicely. It’s drinking beautifully now, will pair well with grilled red meats, salmon, mushrooms and will take barbecued burgers with cheddar cheese to heavenly heights. 2011 Holy Smoke Malbec, with 10% Merlot, this wine will pair perfectly with spicy meat choices — think grilled sausages! 2012 Blushing Bride A creative blending of Cabernet Sauvignon and Riesling with touches of Malbec, Cabernet Franc and Syrah. Strawberries and raspberries in a bottle! Make sure your visit includes a trip to the chapel. Then sip, savour and say a little prayer of thanks to Hidden Chapel Winery! ~ Lorne Eckersley

Crafted from grapes grown on the Golden Mile Bench, this wine is 100% estate grown and full of caramel, butterscotch, honey, and citrus. 12 hours of skin contact assisted in extracting flavour and complexity. A full malolactic fermentation, before being oakaged sur lie in 75% French and 25% American for 8 months, gave the wine a rich mouth feel and good length. There are only 500 cases of this small lot, winery only production. A great wine to pair with roast chicken, crab cakes, grilled scallops or fried oysters.

GEHRINGER BROTHERS – OKANAGAN WINEMAKING HISTORY IN A BOTTLE

G

ehringer Brothers is an institution of the BC wine industry; brothers Walter and Gordon could even be considered among the founding fathers of wine in this area. Not much has changed over the decades at this family run winery. After all, if it isn’t broke, why would you ever need to fix it? This year, visitors are in for a bit of a surprise as the winery has completed an extensive landscaping project including a picnic area next to the tasting room so be sure to bring your picnic when you visit. Their iconic wine barrel has been replaced with a new one. The new barrel is awesome. Check it out! It is good to know that some things never change. Gehringer Brothers has always been known for their Rieslings and the 2012 vintage is no different. The 2012 Private Reserve Riesling has brought home Gold medals from the All Canadian Wine Competition, the Los Angeles International Wine Competition and the Northwest Wine Summit. The 2012 Dry Riesling earned Gold at the All Canadian Wine Competition, the Los Angeles International Wine Competition and a Bronze medal at the Northwest Wine Summit. The 2011 Dry Rock Merlot also was awarded a Gold medal at the All Canadian Wine Competition, in spite of challenging growing conditions. The 2011 Merlot opens with a nose full of cherry, blackberries and ripe plums with a hint of spice and finishes smooth and light with a slight bite of chalk. The 2012 Dry Rock Merlot is a bigger, richer version of the varietal with flavors of cherries, plums and ripe raspberries. The finish is bold and smooth with that classic Merlot chalk. Winemaker Walter Gehringer suggests to compare the two years side by side to discover the unique expressions of the two vintages. ~ Courtney Fossett

HEAVENLY TASTES… EARTHLY REWARDS AT CHURCH & STATE WINERY

C

hurch & State Wines overdelivers on that promise, proving that goal setting is an important investment of time and energy. Proprietor Kim Pullen set out with specific goals for the winery. It’s fair to say he has succeeded, with Church & State wines being named the best in Canada by Jancis Robinson, the Canadian Wine Awards and the All-Canadian Wine Championships. Visitors to the Coyote Bowl winery—the original, in Victoria’s Brentwood Bay, is equally as impressive – can enjoy tastings at the outdoor bar or inside, which offers views of the barrel room and the Black Sage Bench, where some of the finest grapes in the country are grown. Big, complex wines emerge from the Coyote Bowl winery. Meritage, Petit Verdot/Malbec and Bordeaux blends prove that Jeff Del Nin knows how to bring out the best of what the fabulous vineyards on more than 50 acres of prime Black Sage land give him. 2008

Quintessential, a classic Bordeaux blend, brought home a Gold from the San Francisco International Wine Competition last year. The soon-to-bereleased 2009 version did even better at this year’s competition, earning a Double Gold. Taste through a selection that also includes Syrah, Viognier and Chardonnay, some available only at the winery, and see if you don’t use the word “fabulous” with astonishing regularity. Church & State is a winery that deserves some time to savour. Sip a glass of wine, listen to the music, take in the view or watch a music video, maybe even play a little bocce. Settle in and enjoy what wine critic Anthony Gismondi describes as “The two best wine bar experiences in the South Okanagan.” “We want you to come in and sit for a half hour and then remember us after you have left,” says Coyote Bowl manager Trish Lynn. ~ Lorne Eckersley

Jam Goddess Irene Ens

Figs can trace their history back to the earliest of times with mentions in the Bible and other ancient writings. They are thought to have been first cultivated in Egypt. They spread to ancient Crete and then subsequently, around the 9th century BC, to ancient Greece, where they became a staple foodstuff in the traditional diet. Figs were held in

such esteem by the Greeks that they created laws forbidding the export of the best quality figs. Figs were also revered in ancient Rome where they were thought of as a sacred fruit. According to Roman myth, the wolf that nurtured the twin founders of Rome, Romulus and Remus, rested under a fig tree. During this period of history, at least 29 varieties of figs were already known. Figs were later introduced to other regions of the Mediterranean by

ancient conquerors and then brought to the Western Hemisphere by the Spaniards in the early 16th century. In the late 19th century, when Spanish missionaries established the mission in San Diego, California, they also planted fig trees. I have heard rumours that fig trees grow well in the Okanagan but they are not available commercially, to my knowledge. This recipe makes a really sweet jam, but then, figs are incredibly sweet to begin with.

Two Cups of Fig Jam

Variations With Mission figs, I add vone small orange (mandarin or Clementine preferred) to the mixture before I cook it. I run it through the food processer first. With green figs, I place one vanilla pod, cut open, in the mixture before I simmer it the first time. Leave the vanilla pod in the jam, and remove when jam is fully cooked. In the meantime, you have washed a big jar in hot, soapy water, and placed it in a 250ºF oven for 10 minutes. Take it out and fill with the hot jam. Let cool on the counter and then refrigerate.

Ingredients: 2 lbs of figs (1 kg) 3 cups sugar 2 tbsp lemon juice Method: Rinse the figs and then cut off the stem. Cut fig into small pieces. Add lemon juice and sugar and place on stove. Bring to a simmer for 10 minutes. Put contents into fridge and let sit overnight. The next day, return to pot and cook until set. Be careful not to overcook as you will get a gummy mess.

he Kruger family planted Wild Goose Vineyards over 30 years ago, first selling their award winning fruit to other wineries before producing their first vintage in 1989. Adolf Kruger is one of the pioneers of the BC wine industry, pushing for the establishment of farm gate wineries. Now in their third generation of operation, Wild Goose represents the passion of family estate wineries. Hagen Kruger is the winemaker of a consistent portfolio of aromatic whites and earthy reds that showcase the best Mother Nature has to offer. Roland Kruger runs the operations at the winery, bringing the wine to the people and the people to the wine! The Kruger family and everyone at Wild Goose Vineyards are passionate about producing top quality wines, and of course, they were ecstatic this summer when the 2012 Mystic River Pinot Blanc won their 8th Lieutenant Governor’s Award of Excellence, the most for any family owned winery in B.C. It is well-deserved kudos, but they are not resting on their laurels. At Wild Goose Vineyards they believe that innovation and change, balanced with tradition is the key to further success, so they continue to strive for excellence. This included new ways to excite their guests at the winery. Their new tasting room is spacious and welcoming, with incredible views of the vineyards and hills of Okanagan Falls. The works of local guest artists are on display and for sale along with a unique collection of accessories and mementos. Special feature wines are available exclusively at the wine shop, including a selection of library vintages, many of which are award winners. These make exquisite gifts for wine fans on

F eyer Family Vineyards, located between Penticton and Oliver, has a focus: to produce excellent Chardonnay and Pinot Noir wines with an emphasis on single vineyard wines. In classic French Burgundy style, they specialize in small case lots of excellent wine, expressive of their unique place of origin. The single vineyard production allows them to showcase the wines that demonstrate unique terroir expressions. Currently 19 acres are under vine. The owners are Jak Meyer and Janice Stevens who live on the property with their family and winery dog Bruce Meyer. The specialization has paid off. At the 2013 National Wine Awards of Canada, they garnered Platinum for 2011 McLean Creek Chardonnay, Gold for 2011 Reimer Vineyard Pinot Noir, Silvers for 2011 McLean Creek Pinot Noir and 2011 Tribute Series Winnifred Mary Steward Chardonnay and Bronze for 2011 Okanagan Valley Pinot Noir. EAU VIVRE WINS SECOND LIEUTENANT GOVERNOR’S AWARD

C

ongratulations are again due to Eau Vivre Winery for its second win of a Lieutenant Governor’s ‘Award of Excellence in BC Wine’. Their 2010 Pinot Noir follows in the tracks of previous medal winner 2009 Pinot Noir, firmly establishing this

varietal as their flagship wine. It’s elegant yet luscious, showing a pale ruby color, some spice along with plum and cherry flavours, finishing with nicely softening tannins. A spectacular value at $19.00!

Recipient of a 2012 & 2013 Lieutenant Governor’s Award for Excellence in British Columbia Wines.

Wine shop open daily 10:30-5:30 until October 14th or by appointment Our wines are available at BC VQA and other fine liquor stores and restaurants.

Winemaker A n t h o n y Buchanan trained in oenology and viticulture at universities in Washington and Oregon, followed by several years of experience in the Okanagan and Similkameen Valleys. He’s a big fan of Burgundianstyled wine and sees this as the predominant focus of the winery. Increasing tonnage of Pinot Noir will enable the winery to up its production to about 2500 cases for the 2013 vintage while scaling back somewhat on its Bordeaux-style portfolio of wines. When I visited in July the vintage was looking like it should be an exceptional one, which would make a lot of BC winemakers happy, given the last two difficult vintages. Several restaurants in Vancouver are firmly on board in supporting the winery’s niche in Pinot Noir. They’ve bought kegs of the 2012, allowing them to market the wine to their

SEVEN STONES WINERY OPENS STUNNING WINE CAVES

W

OW! What else can you say about the vision and execution of proprietor/ winemaker George Hanson’s vision for a gorgeous cave cum special event venue at Seven Stones Winery. The 3,400 square foot cave has been elegantly finished (including Bose sound system) and water feature, incorporating both a consumer-friendly space and barrelaging cellar. Its inaugural event (limited to 30 guests; cost $60.00) will be a vertical tasting “Seven Years of Seven Stones Meritage” on October 6. Lots of big reds await you at this Cawston jewel just 30 minutes drive south of Penticton. The 2008 Meritage ($32.00) won a Silver medal at the 2010 Northwest Wine Summit. A beautifully complex wine with notes of currant, plum and coffee - it shows its 17 months in French oak with a long supple

finish. Another Silver medalist from that competition is the 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon ($35.00) with similar aging. Complex aromas and flavours of black currant, tobacco and licorice define this stunning, yet elegant, wine which garnered a 93 point rating by John Schreiner and Silver at the 2012 All Canadian Wine Championships. For Merlot lovers, try the 2010 Row 128 Merlot for soft, lush flavours of plum, cherry and chocolate with a lingering finish – drinking very nicely now. Planted in 2000/2001, the vineyards are producing mature fruit, expressing great varietal character. This year all production will be crushed and vinified on site, allowing Seven Stones to benefit from this maturity to produce greater quantities of high quality wines from the upcoming harvest. I’ll drink to that! ~ Allison Fader

hen the harvest comes in, farmers like to celebrate. For those farmers who have been at it a long time, they know how to do it right. To celebrate their 128th year of family farming, Rustic Roots *Winery* will be hosting the 6th Annual Harvest Festival on October 5th, from 2-6pm. “There will be live music, artisan market, an Heirloom tomato tasting competition, facepainting, scavenger hunts, and a chef prepared locally-farmed food,” explains Sara Harker. It promises to be a fabulous event *for the whole family* showcasing locally-sourced, organic and sustainably produced foods. For the Harker family, the local community can also be the whole province. Harker’s Organics will again be participating in the BC Agriculture in the Classroom

Foundation’s “BC School Fruit & Vegetable Nutrition Program” which delivers fresh BC-grown produce to over 400,000 children in schools throughout the province. “We provide the organic peaches, plums, apples, and pears utilized in the program” explains Sara Harker, “we’ve been a part of it since its inception in 2007.” Harvest won’t be the only thing on the family’s minds this fall. As the 2013 winners of the BC Outstanding Young Farmers award, Sara and Troy Harker will be heading to the National Outstanding Young Farmers Competition in Regina, Saskatchewan. Drop in and share the Harker Family’s passion for creating a secure sustainable food system and enjoy Rustic Roots Winery’s award winning wines including the 2012 Vintages of Plum and Santa Rosa. ~ Luke Whittall

pencer Massie of Clos du Soleil is excited about the progress at this top notch Similkameen winery that is producing wines with Old World elegance and New World edge. Two “Best of Varietal Awards” at the Spring Wine Festival plus a first Gold medal for Signature 2010 from the Wine Align 2013 National Wine Awards speak to the quality of the wines. Achieving their organic certification in July marks a significant milestone of resident manager Felix Boulais’ work in the vineyard, as the path to full biodynamic production continues. With growth comes new talent and the newest addition to the family is partner and managing director Mike Clark, who has worked vintages in Switzerland and Bordeaux, who will oversee the day to day operations of the winery. Clark will handle

their growing portfolio of wines including more Grower’s Series and the Estate Reserve made exclusively from grapes grown in their Keremeos vineyard. “It’s our first full estate red blend,” says Massie proudly. Though slated for release late fall, it will only be released when “it’s showing at its best. We’ll hold it back if it’s not ready”. Clos Du Soleil will be hosting their second vertical tasting of flagship wines Capella and Signature, their critically acclaimed Bordeaux-style white and red wines, on October 6th with Rhys Pender MW. This event is limited to 12 people selected by lottery. With a new vintage released each year, it will include all back vintages. “It’s nice to have a track record of fine wines that are all aging exceptionally well,” Massie says with a smile. ~ Luke Whittall

Okanagan Coffee Houses - Experience the Bean at Its Best By Dona Sturmanis

T

here’s nothing quite as enticing as visiting a favourite coffee house and enjoying a rich, aromatic cuppa with a house-made treat to go with it. The ambience of the establishment and the service are equally important to the experience. In the Okanagan, w e are very fortunate to have some fabulous coffee houses, each with their own distinct personalities and specialties. Here are a few that we like. Bean Scene Coffee Works, Kelowna Bean Scene Downtown 274 Bernard Avenue 250-763-1814 Bean Scene Landmark Bakery/Roastery #100-1615 Dickson Avenue 778-484-5445 Owners Deb Synnot and John Anderson call the Bean Scene located on Bernard in downtown Kelowna the Mothership of their coffeehouses as it has been operating for John & Deb 17 years in the original post office building, with its antique furniture, brick walls and wood floors. Bean Scene Landmark, open for two years at the Landmark Towers, has a completely different ambience--”We designed this to be all about production, industrial and minimal--we wanted the fire engine red roaster, the stainless steel kitchen and the world barista championship espresso machines to be the focal point,” says Deb. Bean Scene Coffee Works is one of the only roaster/retail operators and this gives them an advantage. “We can directly experience how our roasted coffee translates.” They roast on demand, by hand and small batch, only 12 kilograms at a time. “All of our mediums are single origin and single estate when we can get them.” Deb says a well-roasted coffee is only as good as the way it is treated by the barista and all are required to compete in-house to win a chance to compete internationally. Fave food items to accompany the coffees--all made in house--range from cookies to carrot and chocolate zucchini bars with cream cheese www.winetrails.ca

icing. They also create healthy savoury items like brown Basmati rice bowls, bake their own bread, and roast turkey and make meat loaf for sandwiches. “We strive to promote simplicity and excellence in all areas of our business,” says Deb. Al & Amy

**Just before we went to press we heard the exciting news that Amy and Al had purchased the Bean Scene Landmark coffee house (HQ). Deb and John continue as owners of the bakery and roastery at that location. Congratulations!! Al and Amy Lang opened their doors October 2012. Al says at the “comfortably energetic” coffee house, popular coffee drinks vary from season to season but the traditional cappuccino is at the top. “Since the Bean Scene roasts all of its own espresso, this drink is the perfect way to highlight the deep body of our Espresso Graf, the creaminess of the micro-foamed milk, and it’s the perfect vehicle for our baristas to show off some competition-grade art. As for the bakery side of things, I think two of the clear winners would be our granola bars or our wheat-free and vegan Cosmic Cookies.” Al says that even during those insanely busy hours, with the line up to the door, and the barista slinging lattes at a mile a minute, the patrons continue to talk, laugh, and to genuinely enjoy their time at this coffee house. GiObean Expresso 1320 Water Street, Kelowna 250-868-2992 “As my ‘Nonno’ (grandfather) said to me as a small boy growing up in Italy, ‘Coffee should be as strong as a lion, as dark as night, but as sweet as love’,” says Gio, owner of Kelowna’s wildly popular GiObean.

Gio, whose full name is Giovanni Lauretta, opened GiObean in March of 2010 to “offer a coffee experience similar to one that you might get in Italy.” The GiObean experience is a testament to Gio’s Italian background and many years of experience in the coffee industry. The welcoming, friendly and at times buzzing GiObean works closely with Vernon’s Voets Coffee which roasts a specific GiObean blend of fairly traded, organic 100% Arabica beans weekly. “Our baristas and I make the coffees from the whole roasted bean to the handcrafted Italian cup of coffee, using an Italian manufactured, manually-operated three-group coffee machine.” European-style pastries and scones are baked and delivered fresh every morning. For lunch, grilled Italian Panini and sandwiches are “delizioso.” “We aim to make every aspect of a customer’s visit to GiObean an experience,” says Gio. “Coffee, the Italian way.” Good Omens 13616 Kelly Avenue, Summerland 250-494-3200 “From the beginning it has been our goal to provide something out of the ordinary, a free-thinking community hub supporting local producers, artists and musicians,” says Jamie Embree and her partner Jason about their coffee house Good Omens in Summerland. “That and kick-ass food and drink.” Not surprisingly, cappuccino is the most popular coffee drink at Good Omens, which is nestled in a residential neighbourhood a few minutes walk from downtown Summerland. Operating for five years this September, it’s located where Jamie’s Jamie & Jason grandmother used to live. “We buck the big and foamy trend and serve it short, in a six-ounce cup, double shot of espresso and finely textured milk. It pairs nicely with our most popular food item, Peanut Butter Banana Bread.” Regulars appreciate the staff at Good Omens for greeting them by name and remembering their preferences. “That and the fact we make things like chocolate and bacon pop tarts.” Both Jamie and Jason are classically trained chefs and operate their busy catering business as well. COFFEE LOVE continued from page 26 The Bench Artisan Food Market 368 Vancouver Avenue, Penticton 250-492-2222

The most popular coffee at The Bench Artisan Food Market in Penticton is the house “Bench Blend” custom-blended by Bench barista extraordinaire Dan Gauthier. “It’s a blend of Brazilian, Cuban, Mexican and Sumatra beans... organic and farmerfriendly, roasted in Summerland by Backyard Beans,” says Dawn Lennie, who owns the very successful Bench Market with her sister Deb Halladay. Locals really appreciate the lively atmosphere at The Bench Market, the great patio, the awesome staff and the delicious and fresh food. “At this time of year we always have some kind of house smoked meat sandwich on the menu. We also always have a great selection of freshly-made salads that are great to enjoy in-house with your lunch or take some with you for a picnic at the beach!” says Dawn.

An additional bonus at The Bench Market is being able to take home Bench frozen soups, gourmet pizzas, artisan pastas and

sauces as well as an extensive selection of organic grains, lentils, beans, spices and baking ingredients.

FISH N’ SIPS N’ COFFEE N’ DOUGHNUTS – THE BENCH MARKET HAS IT ALL

T

he Bench Market in Penticton has been a favourite of locals for the last eight years. It is well known as the perfect pre-wine tour spot to pick up picnic ingredients on your way to go wine tasting. The market carries a wide variety of fresh made dips, local cheese, Two Rivers cured meats, sandwiches and more. The relaxing outdoor patio will be kept going throughout the fall season as long as weather permits. Enjoy their famous Eggs Benedict brunch until 2 pm on weekends and holidays. Recently the head barista has blended a new popular new coffee called ‘Bench Blend’. Indulge in ‘Doughnut Fridays’ with a fresh selection of Bench-made doughnuts and doughnut holes. Fresh bread is delivered every

Saturday morning from local artisan Farmers Dotter Organics. On September 7th, The chefs at the Bench are excited to participate in the Naramata Bench Tailgate party. This year’s theme is Fish ‘N Sips and will take place at Manitou Park. Each participating restaurant is given a different type of seafood to create their own signature tapas for the event. This year, The Bench will be creating a dish using cod cheeks, which they are excited to be working with. Don’t have time to head up to the Penticton location? Don’t fret because you can now pick up some of their famous fare at Old Town Market at two separate locations, in Kelowna and Penticton. Grab your favourite take and bake pizza as well other items like The Bench granola bars. ~ Natasha Chudyk

A portion of the proceeds from the sale of this beer are donated to the Canadian Fallen Firefighters Foundation.” Cannery’s Knucklehead Pumpkin Ale will be brewed and ready to go in early October. This year, the knucklehead pumpkins are being grown for the brewery by Covert Farms in Oliver. “It has been great fun to watch their progress from seed to greenhouse to field to pumpkin formation,” says Patt. “We are anxiously awaiting their distinctive ‘wart covered’ skin development and we are really looking forward to the whole chopping, roasting and smashing process that eventually leads to this fall tradition.” Cannery Brewing is always involved in creative promotional projects. THE CAT’S PAJAMAS AT KRAZE LEGZ

I

was recently lucky enough to spend some time with the proprietors of Kraze Legz winery; Sue and Gerry Thygesen. In their cozy tasting room, also known as their 1920s Speakeasy, boasting sweeping views of Skaha Lake, they let me sample some of their fun, fantastic wines. The 2012 Bee’s Knees Pinot Blanc is a bright, crisp revelation. I loved the creamy mouth feel and the citrus zest on the palate. The notes of Granny Smith made me realize why this wine was so popular at the Osoyoos Oyster Fest this past spring. It would be the ideal partner to a platter of oysters on the half shell. Their SHHH… Icewine is glorious! Made from Merlot grapes it exhibits tasty strawberry and cherry cordial notes. The sweetness is well balanced, making this wine feel silky in your mouth while still being restrained enough to leave a clean finish behind. If you’re passing through during the Fall Wine Festival, make sure

to stop by and try a Blind Vertical Tasting. Proprietors Gerry and Sue will be bootlegging from their library to showcase past vintages of The Speakeasy Rosé, Bee’s Knees Pinot Blanc and Black Bottom Stomp. The tastings will be paired with delicious local cheeses, so it’s worth making time for a visit. While you’re there, be sure to pick up your copy of the 2014 BC Winery Cat’s Pajamas Calendar. This project was a labour of love for winery proprietor Sue Thygesen and it features 10 months of submitted portraits of winery felines and two months of kitty collages made from photos sent in by their owners. In spite of all of the pressures of entrepreneurial life, Sue managed to find the time to source all of the images and do the design and layout. A portion of the proceeds from The Cat’s Pajamas is earmarked to benefit Critter Aid. ~ Courtney Fossett

ust like fine wine, the words “well-balanced” also describe Upper Bench Winery & Creamery. On a vineyard tour with owners Gavin and Shana Miller, it’s easy to appreciate the delicate balance between nature and nurture. Gavin proudly shows off rows of pesticide-free vines. “There’s no Roundup on them – they’ve been left natural. There’s nice bugs that kills the nasty bugs,” he laughs. But while the grasses, weeds, insects and vines thrive together, this is not nature gone wild. A closer look reveals Gavin’s careful guidance. His shoot positions are just right, his vines stand straight – all to ensure the leaves and grapes get maximum sunlight. His meticulous effort pays off: “I want it [vineyard] to be sustainable. I want all the grapes to be in balance. So when we come into the cellar during harvest everything is right and doesn’t have to be manipulated. If you grow it right, it’s easy to make wine.” Next we enter the wine shop and cheese tasting room – where award-winning wines and cheeses form a blissful balance of acid and fat. I sampled the 2012 Riesling

– a refreshing, crisp wine perfect for sipping on a sundeck. This “balanced” white - with hints of mango, papaya, gooseberry, lime, and elderflower – pairs nicely with a savoury slice of Shana’s hand-made U&Brie or French Gold. Prefer reds? Try the 2011 Cabernet Sauvignon with King Cole or Okanagan Sun2. Before leaving, I admire the winery’s newly renovated patio, where Gavin and Shana strive for a perfect balance of sun and shade. Under an inviting wooden trellis, guests can enjoy their favourite combinations of wine and cheese while overlooking a stunning view. “The more balance you have in your life – the happier you are!” says Shana. rom its strategic location as the gateway to the Naramata Bench, Perseus Winery is winning raves from wine lovers. They can’t seem to stop talking about the great reds and whites that are made to express the terroir of vineyards throughout the Okanagan and Similkameen Valleys. And acknowledgement of their efforts is coming from a national stage. The 2011 Cabernet Shiraz brought home Gold from this year’s Wine Align National Wine Awards of Canada and 2009 Invictus, a classic Bordeaux blend, earned Silver. Invictus is elegant, earthy and age-worthy— enjoy some now and put some away in the cellar. It’s that good! Two more wines, 2011 Merlot and 2011 Pinot Gris, won Bronze medals at the National awards. The winery, a former residential home at the foot of Lower Bench Road, makes a natural entrance to the Naramata Bench and the location is also home to an Info Centre, where guests can get information about

other Naramata wineries, galleries and bed and breakfasts. It’s also a pickup point for the Okanagan Wine Shuttle. A sister winery, Helios, will soon be launched in Westbank, on a property next to Quails’ Gate. The 10,000 square foot building will house a full wine production facility, bistro and tasting bar. After an event-filled summer, the staff at Perseus has no intention of slowing down in the fall. Check the website (www.perseuswinery.com) for complete information, including happenings during the exciting Fall Okanagan Wine Festival from October 4-14. Members of the Perseus Wine Club (see website for details) will be invited to join the unveiling of 2012 red wines bottled in September and a charity auction of select library wines with food and wine to follow. A series of educational events at the winery will be scheduled for during and after the fall festival. ~ Lorne Eckersley

NARAMATA HERITAGE INN WELCOMES CYCLISTS

I

magine a place where you can train for cycling events – and have your wine too. Starting in spring 2014, the Naramata Heritage Inn has a program for you! Last March, new owners Julius and Toni Bloomfield set a goal to keep their inn open year round. And they are doing just that by teaming up with local fitness professionals Ian Lobb and Louise and Andre Blais to host “cycling performance camps.” After experiencing the excitement, energy and business generated by the Granfondo – the Bloomfields knew they were on course. “We’ve done our research and we know this is a strong market. The Okanagan is a cycling destination,” says Julius. “Plus, we have an excellent climate for training in the spring.” The camps will give cyclists, especially those preparing for Granfondo or Challenge Penticton, an opportunity to stay in the area, train and get familiar with the region. Toni, a marathon runner, and Julius, a twotime Ironman participant, are sports enthusiasts. “We’ve trained on the Naramata Bench and we know this is a great location,” says Toni. “A lot of cyclists already stay at the Inn – so these camps are a no-brainer.” Everything’s included: accommodation, meals and training, as well as educational seminars on nutrition and injury prevention – and possibly a wine tour or two. “It’s all about cycling, but we also know this group enjoys a glass of wine and great food,” says Julius. “The sky is the limit. We’ll tailor the camps for different groups,” adds Louise, who along with Andre and Ian has an extensive background in competitive races and fitness instruction. The camps will run from Easter weekend to mid-June. “You have to give people a reason to come here; you can’t just open the door and expect them to come,” says Julius. “And it’s a way for us to fill the rooms, use this facility, and keep our staff working,” adds Toni. The inn will also

partner with local businesses to offer the cyclists’ spouses and families’ fun activities. “I can’t wait for the camp camaraderie that’s going to develop. The energetic vibe will be awesome,” says Louise with an enthusiastic grin. Tour de Naramata anyone? ~ Erin Trainer

WINE THAT MAKES PEOPLE HAPPY AT MORAINE WINERY

F

irst and foremost, Moraine Winery is a family endeavor. Oleg Aristarkhov and his charming wife, Svetlana, are happy to have left behind their 15 years in Alberta to settle in Naramata. Drawn by a belief that wine offers one of life’s most simple, enjoyable and accessible pleasures, they leapt into the wine business with enthusiasm that has only grown with their time in the winery and vineyards. The vineyards are christened for their daughters, Sophia, 13, and Anastasia, a newly graduated medical doctor in Alberta. Oleg chose to name the winery Moraine because it honours the geography so important to

wine. A moraine is a glacially formed accumulation of soil and rocks, whose minerals contribute to a grape’s complexity. The geographical theme extends to his naming of wines like Cliffhanger (also an allusion to the couple’s foray into a new career), Red Mountain (a tribute to the mountain where Nancy Greene learned to ski) and Pink Mountain (a Peace River area formation). It was a busy summer in the wine shop, with guests raving about the 2012 Cliffhanger Red, which earned a Gold medal at this year’s All Canadian Wine Championship. The 2012 Pinot Gris won a Bronze in the same event. Red Mountain, a Bordeaux blend, has received excellent responses in the wine shop. New releases this fall will include Pinot Noir, Malbec and Syrah. Among Fall Okanagan Wine Festival activities will be the Pinot Noir release, barrel tastings of which are revealing lively cranberry and fruit flavours. Oleg is a classic example of a man who takes his business seriously and himself lightly.

SPRING INTO FALL AT SHADES OF LINEN

W

e had a great start for spring and summer of this year,” says Diane Jensen, owner of Shades of Linen in Naramata. She’s also looking forward to fall, which is one of her best selling seasons. Diane’s been designing her classic linen fashions since 2001. Clients love her comfortable, stylish garments made of this breathable fabric, which comes from a fibre older in history than cotton. “This year our linen colours have been pink, a light grey, along with regular colours of beige, white, and of course, black.” The famous Naramata Bench pants are always popular. “It’s the fit that makes them a winner,” says Diane. Also in demand have been jean jackets in floral linen. Unfortunately, those are sold out, but there are now black and white polka dot jackets available. “There are fresh

new styles always coming out of our back room. All season long.” All Shades of Linen easy-to-carefor natural fabric clothing is all preshrunk and made on site. Fabric samples are available on request to help coordinate their colours to clients’ wardrobes. The boutique also carries garments from other designers that compliment the linen, and men’s wear, including linen beach pants with a drawstring and elastic waist band and some very attractive comfortable shirts. Shades of Linen has great accessories to complement the elegant garments. “Going along with the Great Gatsby trend, we are carrying a line of hats with a 20s flair,” says Diane. “There are also wide bracelets that look like lace. This line is called Liquid Metal. Beautiful!” ~ Dona Sturmanis

“Wine should be fun,” he insists. “We want to make wines that will make people happy.” To that end, his hiring of young New Zealand winemaker Jacq

Or adding highly regarded Richard Kanazawa as consulting winemaker on what is shaping up to be an all-star team? Kanazawa brings years of experience to Serendipity, and he shares Judy’s vision of creating Old World-style wines from the maturing vineyard that surrounds the winery. He joins Craig MacKenzie, who now oversees farm operations, and June Stewart, who manages the wine shop, freeing up Judy’s daughter, Katie O’Kell, to look after paperwork and focus on her UC Davis winemaking studies. “I’m pretty much always behind the wheel now,” Judy laughs. “If I’m not out on the road doing sales and promotion I’m on the tractor!” Serendipity had its first exposure at the Calgary Stampede in July, with Judy staying and pouring her wines during the entire 10-day event that left her raving about the city’s sense of community. 100% ESTATE GROWN GRAPES AT POPLAR GROVE WINERY oplar Grove Winery proudly maintains that all of its wines are now 100% estategrown – on 30 acres on the Naramata Bench and 35 acres in Osoyoos. Add to this their new state-of-theart production facility and dedicated winemaking team and you have the recipe for success. Winemaker Stefan Arnason is pleased to have the Okanagan’s first indoor crush pad, a stellar line-up of tanks and barrels and professional assistant winemakers Nadine Allander (New Zealand trained) and Kitson Stewart (yes – Ben Stewart’s son!) at his side. The facility has its own warehouse attached, aiding in storing all the new barrels incorporated annually (25% of production). The approximately 4400 eventual cases of 2011 red wines are resting quietly in their barrels awaiting final blending. The team interacts daily with newly-hired viticulturalist Matt Rademakers to ensure ongoing updating of what’s happening in the vineyards and optimal planning for the approaching harvest. Poplar Grove is also home to not just your average run-of-the-mill Wine Club. Only members can purchase a number of products made uniquely for them – as

P

well as getting first choice on limited-production wines. These special production wines spend 18 – 20 months in barrel and a further year in the bottle prior to release to the Club. Its members have been privy to such treats as: 2011 Reserve Chardonnay, 2011 Munson Mountain Pinot Gris, 2010 Munson Mountain Cabernet Franc, and the 2010 Benchmark (Meritage) blend. Club members will have a number of unique purchase opportunities, such as the limited-release 2010 Cabernet Franc and 2010 Syrah, due out in October – so now is a good time to join if you’re not already a member. The winery continues to garner awards including: Silver for the 2010 Syrah at the Decanter World Wine Awards and National Wine Awards of Canada; Best in Class at the 28th Pacific Rim International Wine Competition for its Legacy 2007 and Gold for the 2010 Cabernet Franc; and Best in Class for the 2012 Pinot Gris from the Alberta Beverage Awards. The Vanilla Pod Restaurant is celebrating its first anniversary and continues to draw happy “foodies” to the winery’s spectacular setting. RECEIVE JUST WHAT THE DR. ORDERED AT THERAPY VINEYARDS

B

ecause everyone needs a little Therapy” is the slogan at one of the great gems of the Naramata Bench. Visitors arriving at Therapy Vineyards get a sense of serenity from vineyards that slope downward to Okanagan Lake. They get treated like royalty in the welcoming wine shop and tasting room. And the luckiest get to call the vineyard home when they stay in one of the eight suites and rooms in the world-class Guesthouse. Recent new releases include two wines that wine shop and guesthouse manager Nick Stulberg refers to as The Good and The Evil. The Good, he says, is an Artist Series Riesling-Kerner blend. The Evil is a wild fermentation Pinot Noir. Wild fermentation is a risky winemaking approach that relies only on yeasts that are found naturally on the harvested grapes. “This Pinot is drinking nicely now and it will only continue to get better over the next year or two,” Nick observes. Both wines are priced at $24.00. Also $24.00 is the 2011 Syrah, the winery’s first since 2008. It’s sure to be a popular seller.

www.winetrails.ca

Another sure hit is Freudified, a non-vintage Port-style sipper made from Merlot and Syrah. It’s a bargain at only $25.00, and will help bring back good memories of Therapy on a chilly fall or winter evening. The 2012 Sauvignon Blanc drew the attention of the Globe and Mail’s Beppi Crosariol, who wrote, “This white is more like an invigorating smoothie served poolside at a spa resort than a visit to the shrink. Fruitforward with flavours of peach and mango, it culminates with juicy acidity.“ Nick also singled out the newly released 2010 Freud’s Ego and a Pinot Noir-Merlot blend as worthy of mention. Fall promises to be packed with excitement at Therapy. A “pre-tailgate festival party” will feature live music and beverages before guests head to Manitou Beach for the ever-popular Naramata Bench Tailgate Party. And don’t miss Crush With Us, a Fall Wine Festival event on October 4-5, that invites visitors to spend a day in the vineyards or the winery, learning first-hand what goes into making great Therapy wines. ~ Lorne Eckersley

PARTIES GALORE THIS FALL AT HILLSIDE WINERY & BISTRO

H

illside Winery and Bistro is the complete package. It has history. In 1989 Hillside joined Wild Goose and Lang Vineyards as the one of the first farm gate wineries in the province. It has location. The distinctive wood structure rises above Naramata Road to afford views that have to be seen to be believed. And the Kettle Valley Trail runs just behind the property. It has food. In the Bistro, Chef Rob Cordonier creates magic, with a strong focus on fresh, local ingredients. And, of course, it has wine. In the winery, Kathy Malone uses a deft, gentle hand to turn grapes into fine wines, using an increasingly single vineyard approach to bring out the expression of the Hillside vineyards’ terroir. Visitors to the tasting room will enjoy the chance to sample wines that include new releases like 2010 Syrah, a nicely balanced red with great tannins and a hint of potter’s clay with flavours of raspberries, blackberries and minerals. The 2010 Merlot Malbec is made from Naramata-

grown grapes, a perfect match with lamb ragout, suggests sales and marketing manager Lisa Baxter-Burke. The 2010 Viognier is proving to be popular, as is the tasty 2010 Late Harvest Kerner. With the coming of fall many events are planned, including live local music on four sundays in september. During October’s Fall Wine Festival, Oktoberfest will be celebrated in the Bistro. An Oktoberfest platter will be featured from 5-9 p.m., October 4-11 (locally brewed beer will also be available!). Guests are invited to the popular Graze Among the Grapes winemaker’s dinner, which starts with a reception in the courtyard featuring Hillside’s award-winning Rosé and canapes A vineyard walk is followed by a wine-paired dinner. Make your reservations now! And don’t forget about the popular Thanksgiving turkey dinner on October 13-14, or Hallowe’en at Hillside, the winery’s 3rd annual party. ~ Lorne Eckersley

LIFE IS GOOD AT D’ANGELO ESTATE WINERY

n July, Sal D’angelo was working 12-hour days in the vineyard, supervising a crew pulling leaves to expose grape clusters to the sun, cutting top growth from vines to force the plant’s energy to be directed into ripening the fruit, and ensuring only

the requisite number of clusters was left hanging on vines. After 30 years in the business, he knows that effort in the vineyard has to be made before one can expect quality in the winery. A true family man, Sal’s conversations are peppered with family references.

brother asked him why he never goes anywhere His reply? ‘’Because I am already there.‘’ Meticulous in his record keeping, he can open his beloved Blackberry and find spreadsheets on everything to vineyard spraying schedules to each check of wines in barrels. It’s that attention to detail, he says, that helps make consistently great wines. And it shows. In the wine shop are fine expressions of Merlot-Cab Franc, Viognier, Pinot Noir, Tempranillo and Sette Coppa Riserva. Coming along nicely are new vintages of Tempranillo, Merlot, Cab Sauvignon, Sette Coppa and his first ever Rosé. And yet to be bottled is their sweet dessert wine called Dolce Vita Rosso, a Port-style wine with a twist using icewine and brandy from their own vineyard and distilled by Maple Leaf Distillery in Penticton They will be ready by the time this story is in reader’s hands. THE SIREN’S CALL (SHE MUST BE AN ANARCHIST)

Confessions from the vineyard by Terry Meyer-Stone

I

consider myself a ‘newbie’ in the world of viticulture and winemaking. It feels like months (it’s years) since we threw in the city towel and embraced the farmer’s life. Recently an enthusiastic Albertan--answering the siren’s call of orchards, vineyards, lakes and hot desert sun while planning his future retirement-asked a million questions about how grapes grow, how much

wine in one bunch, how long ‘til grapes show up on new vines, why do vines grow straight up, how do you choose barrels, how is Icewine made, and more. (I kinda had the answers-- maybe I have learned something!). And then my favorite question: “ Are there some vineyard owners who don’t know anything at all but just fall in love with it here and jump?” Wow, big blush on that one as the neon arrow in the sky points right at my head. “Hmm, maybe a few...” Truth is there are as many quirky owners as there are wineries and vineyards. There’s the ‘run away from the city, run away from winter, run towards romance, run towards

unlimited wine’ kind of owners. Or, there are the families, where mom, dad, cousins, uncles and more all pitch in. Then there’s situations where land has been passed down from generation to generation or where the ink is barely dry on legal papers. The ones that know a lot and the ones that know nothing. There are consortiums of accountants and oilmen, lawyers and businessman who answer the sirens call and ignore the balance sheet blinded by those dazzling damsels singing their song. I must confess to a little thrill, naw, make that a THRILL when I share that hubby and I live on a vineyard on Anarchist Mountain.

I see eyes glaze over with wistful envy and I bask in that moment and never, ever, ever tell them how that very morning I had to scrape chicken stuff off my fave red shoes, or how the rattlesnake was coiled at the front door, or how I now have a chiropractor I’m supporting, or how hubby and I haven’t ever made it to the beach or done wine tours because there is no such thing as a weekend when you have a vineyard. Nope. They drift into their fantasy and those sirens ramp up that tune and pretty soon we’re both hearing the song of sun setting over the idyllic vineyard, glass of chardonnay in hand, living life large.

DIRTY LAUNDRY VINEYARD MAKES TRIP ADVISOR’S TOP 10 IN THE WORLD

G

uess which Summerland winery is on Trip Advisor’s top 10 % businesses in the world? Dirty Laundry Vineyard, that’s who!!! Congratulations to Summerland’s Dirty Laundry Vineyard’s (DLV) staff and proprietors for being awarded the coveted Trip Advisor’s top 10% businesses “IN THE WORLD.” Fans can join in the conversation by logging on to www.tripadvisor.ca. No surprise to us lucky Okanaganians, who have seen this Bottleneck Drive boutique winery grow by leaps and bounds each year, bringing wine-lovers the world over to our wonderful town of Summerland. DLV recently bought 6 new Italianmade stainless-steel tanks and constructed another building, to house their 20% increase in wine for the 2013 vintage. Marketing director Judi Skinner says that they expect to produce over 20,000 cases for 2013. Gary Byman, a senior winegrape grower, says he expects the 2013 vintage to be “a stellar year. The weather is perfect, the

pests and mildew under control, and the clusters are so full – just unbelievable!” Skinner says that DLV’s first white blend, “Secret Affair” was a “total success,” prompting the winery to embark on their newest red blend. Although details on this wine is still “hush hush,” the mostly-Merlot blend will “be a bit sweeter,” which Skinner promises will be a “great transition wine for fans getting into reds.” Look out for further updates in BC Food & Wine Trails issues to come! According to Skinner, part of DLV’s success has been due to their passion for wine education in a “fun and playful way.” Making great wines in a great atmosphere is one thing, but a trip to DLV will foster a true understanding of what it takes to make great wines. If you cannot make it to the winery itself, check them out online at www. dirtylaundry.ca. Here you’ll find their Bordello Wine Club, on-line wine & accessories boutique, and the stories that make wine dreams come true. ~ Sarah Willard

Wandering the Westside Wine Trail

The View at Quails’ Gate - photo by David Hughes Creative.

est Kelowna, also known as Kelowna’s Westside, has experienced exponential growth – especially in their wine world. The impressive list of wineries that form the Westside Wine Trail offer visitors a special, refined region all their own. There are nine wineries on this wine trail that most famously includes the home of Mission Hill Family Estate Winery and historical Quails’ Gate Estate Winery. The other seven wellawarded wineries, Kalala Organic Estate Winery, Beaumont Family Estate Winery, Mt. Boucherie Family Estate Winery, Volcanic Hills Estate Winery, Little Straw Vineyards, Rollingdale Winery and Meadow Vista Honey Wines make up the entirety of the route and together offer something for every palate. Continuing to grow, there are three new wineries that will open up in the upcoming year on the Trail including Helios (whose

W

sister winery Perseus is located in Penticton). This area also now offers four unique and delicious dining options ranging from high-end to casual to ethnic – all with lake views and all, of course, with great wine pairings to offer! From hilltop views and ancient volcanic soil to beachside splendour, there are activities to appease every member of your family or tour group. Phase III of the City’s new circular boardwalk offering gorgeous lakeside strolls and a unique protected swimming area are in the works for the future. The City has also invested in the extension of paths and walkways that will connect the waterfront to the centre of town with trails. Westside Wine Trail’s spokesperson, Salina Curtis, says that “the District is really investing in tourism infrastructure and development… it is so nice that we have all of these beautiful amenities that people can enjoy!” ~ Jennifer Schell

he has set up many relationships with local growers and producers. Chef de Montreuil likes to feature the fruits, vegetables, free-range meats and cheeses from Okanagan and BC producers as well as West Coast Ocean Wise Seafood. He also has his own garden in which he cultivates greens, vegetables and herbs to incorporate into the phenomenal seasonal menu. Besides being a food connoisseur’s and vacationer’s dream destination, The Bonfire Restaurant and The Cove Resort feature exceptionally appointed rooms, banquet and meeting spaces. The lakeside views are outstanding, providing a truly Okanagan experience for guests. This fall will bring more live music through the week at the Bonfire Restaurant. And during the Okanagan Wine Festival in October, Bonfire and The Cove will feature its Perfect Palate event on the 6th, 2:30-6:00 p.m., which

will feature artists, musicians and wineries paired with Executive Chef Grant de Montreuil’s culinary team food stations. Spend a relaxed fall afternoon strolling through the gardens and view the wide array of art while indulging in tastings of fresh regional cuisine. While relaxing, guests can sample wines from award-winning local wineries. This event features some of the very best of the Okanagan art community with full displays and a stunning art sale. KALALA – DEDICATION TO ORGANIC SUSTAINABLE WINE GROWING & WINEMAKING PRACTICE

I

t was great to sit down with Kalala Estate Winery’s owner Karnail Singh Sidhu and listen to his philosophy on grape growing and winemaking. Located in the hills above West Kelowna, Kalala 4:07 PM is known for their dedication and commitment to following strict organic practices which are environmentally sustainable. So much so, that they received the Green Key Business award from the Westbank and District Chamber of Commerce earlier in the year. Karnail is not resting on his laurels however, and he is continues to conduct trials in the vineyards as he strives for the best quality fruit but not at the expense of the environment. Winemaker Tibor Erdelyi has done a great job creating a portfolio of wines that display quality, concentration and typical varietal character. The awards adorning the bottles in the tasting room have been garnered from local, national and perhaps more impressively, from an increasing number of international

competitions. Testimony to the fact that balance in the vineyard can make world class wines. In the forthcoming Okanagan Fall Wine Festival, Kalala is hosting their traditional ‘Where East Meets West’ event. This a wonderful opportunity to sample some unique East Indian “tapas” paired alongside their award winning wines. There is no charge, but donation to the West Kelowna Food Bank would be appreciated. They are also participating in the signature tasting events: the WestJet in Kelowna and Valley First in Penticton so be sure to visit their tasting table. 2010 Dostana Chardonnay $18.90 There’s great value to be had with this elegant Chardonnay. Flavours of citrus, baked apple, spice and a touch of buttery oak. The wine received an Honourable Mention at the prestigious 2013 Chardonnay du Monde competition. ~ Mike Lee

VOLCANIC HILLS ESTATE WINERY - A TASTE OF TERROIR

ine country visits are all about enjoying the good life. At Volcanic Hills Estate Winery, you take a deep breath as soon as you enter the relaxing and spacious tasting room. You can sample the wines there, or out on their Lazeez Patio Restaurant overlooking the vineyards and Lake Okanagan. Sounds like a good start, don’t you think? The history of Volcanic Hills is one of passion and connection to the land. The Gidda family has been farming in the Okanagan since the 1960’s. Apples and cherries soon kept company with grapes - Chardonnay, Pinot Gris, Gewürztraminer, Gamay Noir, Pinot Noir and Zweigelt. Now growing their own self-rooted estate grapes and having the winery fulfills a dream and fuels a passion for a second generation. The wines of Volcanic Hills are a typical representation

of Okanagan wines, where microclimates offer an amazing diversity of flavours in the glass. Proprietor Bobby Gidda says that even different vineyard blocks they have within site of the winery building offer unique elements to the final wine profiles.

he Slamkas really are the shining example of a familyrun winery. There are two generations of them involved in this bustling business – from root to bottle and from wine shop to table, you are bound to meet at least a couple members of this friendly family while visiting! The three Slamka brothers Pete, Ric and Tim along with their wives Lynn, Sue and Tina wear various hats on the vineyard/winery as well as involving their children in the mix. However, there are a few nonSlamkas in the crew including Chef Trevor Mayhew who is at the helm of the Barrel Top Restaurant located on the second floor of their wine shop. Cozy and quaint, there are patio tables looking over the vineyards onto the lake and a great menu focusing on local cuisine. Incidentally, Trevor recently won for ‘Best Dish’ served at the local Spot Prawn Festival at Manteo Resort – quite an honour, especially given the competition on site! Chef Mayhew comes to us from Alberta and is reveling in the creative,

local cooking he can produce while living amongst the farmers. Trevor says that he loves “cooking with fire”(hence the outdoor grill at the restaurant). His new passion has been using the grapevines to smoke various meats and dishes that really gives the cuisine a vineyard spin and also provides a good use for the clipped vines. A former stand-up comedian, this chef will also be able to provide some entertainment while dining, if he has time. Winemaker Pete Slamka keeps him busy in the cellar in his other role as assistant winemaker. ~ Jennifer Schell

First of all, it is about the terroir and the fact that we are on a slope that was at one time a volcano. We have a Pinot Noir and Chardonnay program with different numbers of clones growing on the sites. We also have an indigenous yeast ferment here at Quails’ Gate that again sets us apart from other wineries.” Bill also says another outstanding thing about Quails’ Gate is that some of the vines have been in the ground since 1961. “We are also one of the few wineries to grow

t The View Winery, you get a wonderful feeling as soon as you enter the tasting room. An embracing, warm glow of history combined with energizing innovations of present day creates a profound sense of welcome. Who doesn’t want to have a taste of wine when you are among friends?! The Turton-Ward family has farmed their plot of land in South Kelowna for five generations. Jennifer TurtonMolgat, President of The View Winery, is just as passionate about her wines as her Great Grandfather Ward was about his apple cider. Her lively spirit seems to come through in the character of the aromatic whites and richly flavoured reds. Jennifer’s enthusiasm for sharing the wines is also indicative of her passion to show the value of a farm-to-table experience. You really can taste the bounty of the farm in every glass; it’s a beautiful way to appreciate our local farmers.

A perfect autumn taste is their 2010 Pinotage ($22.90) This cross of Cinsault and Pinot Noir offers a delicious combination of dark fruit and an elegant earthiness. It is the perfect transition from summer wines and pairs beautifully with roasted or grilled meats or game. And for those who may be scared away by the talk of sexy red shoes, never fear! They have something for the male gender too. hankfully, neighbourhood restaurants seem to be returning to the food scene. In Kelowna, we have DeBakker’s Kitchen. As cozy as you can get, with awesome owners who are also the cooks/bakers and sometimes servers, this is the kind of place where you want to become a regular. There are actually many forms of “regular” customer at this eatery: - Those who make daily trips for a coffee and amazing baked treats (the blondies and chocolate chip cookies make me weak in the knees). - Those who pop in every couple of days to replenish their organic bread or bun supply (sourdough, potato, rye, gluten free spelt and their famous focaccia as well as baguettes) – all baked in their apple wood fed REAL wood fire oven. - Those who are regular lunchers, addicted to their homemade soups, wood fire chicken roasted sandwiches, healthy salads, not to mention the desserts like my favorite: Mary’s chocolate cake with organic strawberry sauce (sigh). - Those busy folks who look to the DeBakker freezer section to take home delicious comfort food like soups, vegetarian or meat lasagnas, shepherd’s pies to feed their families or themselves guilt free knowing that it was made with the best ingredients and a good dose of love. - And then there are those who can’t get enough of their wood fire oven baked pizza!! Really, this pizza is as

good as it gets with an amazing array of toppings and the best ingredients, you will leave smiling. (The pizza, as well as other dishes including Sandi’s out of this world homemade pasta, are served at dinner time.) A very kid-friendly ambience, DeBakker’s is also a great hang out for adults with an outdoor patio, live music nights and a great wine list. I am a huge fan as you can tell. These wonderful people symbolize what we are trying to become here in the Okanagan. Owners Sandi and Mary Lukic support the community by shopping local and organic. They care about what they are serving their customers and take pride in living and breathing the food revolution. KELOWNA’S INNOVATIVE RESTAURATEUR TEAM RAUDZ OPENS MICRO.BAR.BITES

Christened micro.bar.bites referring to the concept of the 900 sq. ft. venue, small bites and sips centered around the unique 65 ft. bar. This small space dictates that the concept be “creatively simple”, a catch phrase the team of Audrey Surrao and Rod Butters use to prepare guests for the paired down approach focusing on quality over quantity. The actual bar is being built from three species of reclaimed wood by Will Brundula, a local craftsman who designed and built the community table at RauDZ Regional Table. As usual the team is supporting home-grown talent. The ceilings here are expansive and the walls surrounding the bar of Italian plaster, brick and stone, giving the spot an international flair. on and Ann-Marie Crofts are celebrating 10 years in business with Codfathers Seafood Market in Kelowna. Over a decade ago the couple moved from England with the hope of owning their own business in the Okanagan. Now with three small children in tow, the jolly British couple finds time to balance owning a business with family responsibilities. When asked how they manage to do it, Ann-Marie says with a smile: “Keeping a positive attitude, taking turns with the children, and a lot of laughter”. It appears that it won’t be long before the Crofts children will be helping their parents out with the family business. All three children (aged 4-8) are able to shuck oysters. When it comes to family dinner at the Crofts’, the kids have been known to argue over who gets to pin-bone the fish for the night’s meal.

The children have grown up around all kinds of unique seafood - their parents have been bringing in many unique fish flown-in daily from BC’s coast to their Kelowna store for the last decade. This fall, Codfathers is carrying organic sturgeon meat from Northern Divine seafood in Sechelt, BC. These are fish mongers who pride themselves on carrying organic, Ocean Wise and sustainable products. Another unique seafood dish at Codfathers Seafood Market this fall is rope grown oysters from Outlandish Oysters near Quadra Island. Albacore tuna is also in season for fall as well as pink salmon until the end of September. You can count on the Crofts family for offering the freshest and most unique seafood in the Okanagan. ~ Natasha Chudyk

TANTALUS VINEYARDS-AUTHENTICITY & A SENSE OF PLACE

T

antalus Vineyards is one of the oldest continually producing vineyards in British Columbia. Growing Riesling, Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, they come by their connection to the land very honestly. There is an ethos here that speaks about a vibrant connection with the land. The latest measure of this philosophy is their silver certification as a LEED winery, a proud announcement for the team at Tantalus. Tantalus

L-R: Team Tantalus: winemaker David Paterson, GM Jane Hatch & vineyard manager Warwick Shaw

is the first winery in BC to receive this accolade for Leadership in Environmental and Energy Design. The recognition is well deserved, as they have worked hard to create and maintain not just a winery but an entire ecosystem. Tantalus Vineyards was built with the idea of sustaining their environment and the community. Materials were bought locally when possible; all the steel came from Vernon. In addition to sustainably produced building materials and the overall energy efficiency of the LEED system, Tantalus employs a selfcontained waste water treatment program, allowing the treated water to be used for irrigation. Other sustainable elements also promote and protect biodiversity - naturally farmed vines, nesting houses for birds in the vineyard, a forest at the centre of the property to maintain wildlife and retain water, and even the bees in the vineyard that support the efforts of a neighbouring apiary, Arlo’s Honey Farm in Southeast Kelowna.

family run restaurant, Poppadoms combines Okanagan flavours and ingredients with traditional Indian dishes, making for a one of a kind taste. Each member of the Dosanj family lends their own talents and expertise to create a unique dining experience. Behind the bar, brother Harry Dosanj has created an enticing list of Indian cocktails which are unique to Poppadoms. Using local fruits, the drinks bring Indian flair to classic cocktails by using spices and ingredients found in the Poppadoms kitchen. Try Dishoom The Chai-tini 2 which is a refreshing gin and tonic made with cucumber, Okanagan Spirits gin, artisan tonic water and a green chilli kick. Or try the Chai-tini, which is a gin martini with black Masala chai and a homemade lemonade.

Mother, Jas Dosanj leads the kitchen and teaches the popular cooking classes. Each intimate class has a different theme using recipes covering areas across India such as Punjab, Kerala, Chennai and more. The class begins with a signature Poppadoms Masala chai before the class moves into the kitchen where students are first taught basic knife skills before venturing into the exotic recipes. The food is made using locally sourced ingredients, as are all of the dishes on the menu. After a fun cooking class the small group enjoys the fruits of their labour over a glass of Okanagan wine. Cooking classes are available on a first come first serve basis. For more information please contact www. poppadoms.ca/classes or phone 778-753-5563. SPIERHEAD – EXCITING TIMES AHEAD

T

he picturesque SpierHead Winery has quickly gained a reputation for its excellent handcrafted, quality wines. Acclaimed winemaker Bill Pierson has done a great job in producing wines that display depth, flavour and good varietal character. The number of awards that the winery has racked up in such a short time is impressive. When I spoke with Marina Knutson, co-owner of SpierHead, she was clearly very excited by this, and a number of new initiatives that have taken place over the past few months. The winery has launched a new bright dynamic website which is both secure and easy to navigate. You can buy wine online as well as being kept up-to-date with news and events. You can also follow them on Twitter @spierheadwinery. You’ll notice from the website that the winery has created a new Wine Club, where membership definitely has its privileges! These include quarterly wine shipments, discounts, complimentary tastings, and access to newly released wines and wines

from their library. Demand for the soon to be released 2012 Pinot Noir is sure to be high and the Wine Club is a great way of securing a bottle or two. Look out too, for the new label adorning their premium red wine, the Vanguard, it’s both classic and stylish. SpierHead is also part of Fab Five Wine Trail and I would thoroughly recommend this charming trail which features the five boutique-style wineries of East Kelowna. Be sure to pick up your ``Passport`` and gather stamps from the other four wineries and you’ll be entered to win one of five cases of the Fab Five Wine Trail’s wine. 2011 SpierHead Pursuit $23.90 A red blend that is rich, smooth and full bodied. 2011 SpierHead Vanguard $29.90 Only 100 cases were made of the wineries flagship Bordeaux blend. It’s elegant and complex with concentrated dark fruits and supple tannins. ~ Mike Lee

SUMMERHILL WINERY – DYNAMIC & CERTIFIED BIODYNAMIC

Cipes brothers (L-R) Canadian Demeter representative, Gabe and Summerhill’s CEO, Ezra.

or the Cipes family, success is not to be equated with status quo. Canada’s most visited winery has a storied history since Stephen Cipes arrived in the Okanagan in 1986. And Canada’s largest certified vineyard and winery operation has gone a step further in the last four years. The vineyards are now certified biodynamic by Demeter, which endorses the practices of biodynamic farms around the world. “It starts with recognizing that the soil, like the vines and other plants, is alive,” says CEO Ezra Cipes, one of three Cipes brothers now actively involved in the Kelowna operation. “It means the vines find their place within the ecosystem. Each plant has its own relationship to the soil and the world around it.” He points over to the vines growing near the winery. “You don’t see just a single green colour— there are all shades from yellowish to dark.” Between the vine rows there is no sign of tilled soil. The ground cover of native plants is a natural ally with the grapevines, protecting the important work going on in the soil below. Vetches, clover and alfalfa all fix nitrogen from the atmosphere into the soil where the vines’ roots thrive.

F

Page 52 • B.C. Food & Wine Trails • FALL 2013

Biodynamic practices help to restore some of nature’s balance, reducing chances of an epidemic that requires a medicative approach. And relationships develop among the soil, vegetation and bugs, “bringing a balance back into the farm. We do everything we can to keep life in the soil—it’s the plants’ immune system.”

“It means being part of your farm and working with nature versus dominating nature.” - Ezra Cipes Taking a break from his own work in the vineyards, Gabe, now Canada’s representative on Demeter, describes biodynamics as “a spiritual science.” “There is a joy in it,” he says. “It puts you in touch with the natural rhythms of the planet.” Ezra takes another stab at describing biodynamics.

“It means being part of your farm and working with nature versus dominating nature.” And it encourages the growth of plants like nettle, yarrow, valerian, dandelion and chamomile, all of which have been used for thousands of years of civilization. Gabe says such medicinal plants have tremendous benefits and they grow easily in the semi-desert Okanagan conditions, creating additional value to vineyards and helping farmers to see vineyards as more than monocultures. On the Summerhill property, about half of the 80 acres is planted to grapevines, with about 30 acres kept as wildlife preserve, wetland, dryland and meadow. Gabe makes nine natural preparations to encourage healthy soil activity, some of which include fermenting herbs in animal innards, others using cow horns, which are buried according to moon phases. And composting is almost a religion. “This is real farming,” he smiles. “There’s lots of interest in it around here. I’ve been giving away lots of horns and preparations.” ~ Lorne Eckersley

LOCAL HEROES www.anokanagancookbook.com

By Jennifer Schell

The Butcher, The Baker, The Wine & Cheese Maker and… s farmers continue to deservedly attain celebrity status these days amongst communities involved in the food revolution and/or the eat/ shop local movements, there is only one type of farmer that holds the key to our existence: the bee farmer. A strong argument exists that if bees became extinct, our food supply will shut down and in a mere four years humanity would cease to exist? LISTEN. This is serious stuff - especially when we are learning that our bee population is diminishing due to our involvement with genetically modified crops. We need to band together to educate our world about the importance of this buzzing little honey-maker to ensure its survival in a natural world. Thanks to bee farmers (bee keepers or apiculturists) like our local advocate Helen Kennedy in Kelowna, British Columbia, who are working hard to drive this distress message into the masses, some progress is being made. People are becoming alarmed and are beginning to ask questions. Why are dead hives being reported in the news? One of the biggest issues today is the discovery that many of these hives have been proven to have been feeding on GMO crops. Helen explains, “it is not the adult bee that is the only concern, it is the hive. The nectar and pollen being brought back by the worker bees from the GMO crops is incomplete therefore causing malnourishment of the eggs and affecting the 2nd and 3rd generations resulting in the collapse of the hive. It is like feeding the baby bees garbage.” (GMO crop farmers have been said to respond that ONLY 15% of the honeybee population is dying as a result of this “poisoning”. This is an outrageous statement to make about this crucial species to our life cycle!) I recently visited Helen’s beautiful farm and participated in a proper tour – which included getting suited up in a bee suit to be able to get up close to the hives! It was fascinating, inspiring and incredibly educational. Some cool bee facts that I learned: - The average honeybee only makes 1/12 tsp of honey in its lifetime. This is why where are an astounding 60,000 bees per hive! -Bees fly at about 24 km per hour. Apiaries like Helen’s farm try to heavily plant the area with heritage plants that their bees can feed on so

A

www.winetrails.ca

The Bee Farmer

Helen Kennedy, Arlos Honey

they won’t venture out. The farther they have to fly, the more honey they will have to use as fuel. - Wasps and hornets are carnivores and are known to attack hives (I saw several bee attacks during my visit and am happy to report that I slaughtered 4 or 5 wasps). Because of this problem there are guard bees stationed outside the hive to protect against intruders. There is a “rotation of duties” within the hive so guarding is not a lifetime occupation. Helen and her husband Rick Appel together nurture 70 hives of Apis Millifera bees (also known as the Western honeybee species) on their farm. These bees were originally imported from Europe and are crossbred with other bees to strengthen the hive. Helen’s introduction to the world of beekeeping came about by accident. A gentleman arrived at her farm asking if her could keep some hives there. It didn’t take long to convince her – it was serendipity at work – and soon she ended up inheriting a community of hives.

It has always confused me when I have seen different names on honey packaging ie. Clover Honey, Elderflower Honey, Lavender Honey – how the heck do they know which bees are feeding where? Helen explained that it is through tasting each frame of honey that they can determine the different flavours and aromas that would have been imparted by the particular plant. Our local expert “nose” Chef Mark Filatow of Waterfront Wines Restaurant, who is also a sommelier, helps Helen detect the different nuances. He has affection for the Elderflower honey, which he features on his menu. Helen also operates a booth at the local Kelowna Farmers Market where she sells a variety of honey and honey products, beeswax candles as well as produce from their farm. Helen and Rick grow a wide variety of vegetables and berries on the farm for the bees to forage on as well as for themselves and for sale. They are actually the only asparagus growers in the area and grow over 30 varieties of garlic. Please book a tour at your local apiary today, buy local honey and help spread the word about the immediate dangers that are facing our bees and our futures. I will leave you with Helen’s valiant manifesto: “We are not bee keepers - it is the bees who keep us”. Word. Book your tour at Arlo’s Honey Farm in beautiful South Kelowna today!
