NEW VINTAGES TO TASTE AT TINHORN DAVID WYLIE

It’s time for new wine at Tinhorn Creek. The winery has put out many different award-wining wines, including its Chardonnay, Cabernet Franc, Gewürztraminer, Pinot Gris and Pinot Noir. Tinhorn Creek Vineyards produces about 40,000 cases each year from its harvest. All of Tinhorn’s wines evoke the unique terroir of the region: the sage-covered desert terrain. There are some great opportunities this fall to try their vintages. The winery is again hosting events as part of the popular Okanagan Fall Wine festival. Grazing in the Vineyard On September 29, Tinhorn is holding its 2019 Grazing in the Vineyard event from 11 am to 1:30 pm. Enjoy a hike through the Tinhorn vineyard with viticulturist Andrew Moon, while sampling wines from Tinhorn and canapés from Miradoro Restaurant. It’s a chance to learn about vineyard practices, sustainability and the new Golden Mile Bench sub-appellation.

Afterwards, there’s a three-course lunch by Miradoro. Tickets are $65. Guest Chef Dinner On October 5, the Guest Chef Dinner will be held at Miradoro Restaurant at 6:30 pm. It will be an evening of exceptional food and wine, as chef Jeff Van Geest invites a guest chef into the Miradoro kitchen to partner on a delicious and unique multi-course gourmet dinner paired with Tinhorn wines. Seating is limited so call or email Miradoro to reserve a spot today. Tickets are $95, plus tax and gratuity. There is a shuttle service from Penticton available for $20 per person. Dining at Miradoro The popular Miradoro Restaurant is a partnership between Tinhorn Creek and BC culinary legend Manuel Ferreira. The restaurant features panoramic views of the valley below, clean lines and a comfortable atmosphere. With an emphasis on seasonal products and a commitment to sustainable practice, the menu at Miradoro is a

study in culinary creativity. From the authentic forno oven to a diverse wine list (including library wines), this is an excellent place for food lovers to indulge.

Tinhorn’s Summer Canadian Concert Series comes to a close on September 14 with 2019 headliner Bedouin Soundclash. The reggae and ska band based out of Toronto was formed in 2001 and has released four studio albums. Tickets are $75. Shuttles to and from shows are available from Penticton and Osoyoos for each concert; they are $20, return trip and include a glass of wine at the concert.

Tastings at Tinhorn If you’re just visiting for a sip, Tinhorn has a variety of tasting tours. The guided winery tour runs daily and costs $20 a person. See the winery, vineyard and barrel cellar. It’s a glimpse into the winemaking process and takes about one hour. Every Friday and Saturday, Tinhorn runs Let's be Franc! This guided tasting tour explores Cabernet Franc. The cost is $40 a person and takes about 90 minutes. There’s room for two to six people.The Oldfield Reserve Tasting & Cellar Tour runs Friday through Sunday. It’s a rare opportunity to taste a barrel sample. The tour takes about 90 minutes and costs $40 per person. There is space for two to 12 people. Drop-in tastings are generally offered from 10 am to 7 pm daily (until 4 pm from November to February). Join the Crush Club Tinhorn’s Crush Club is a great way to get VIP treatment. Membership includes a complimentary reception and advanced seating at Tinhorn’s concerts,

EXPLORE VERNON THIS FALL

Autumn is harvest season and Vernon is ready for it with lots of celebrations and things to do. Foodies, families and adventurous folk love this time of year. From wine to cheese to pumpkin races and hiking and biking the Okanagan Rail Trail, there are so many ways to celebrate and enjoy the season. Vernon Fall Festival – Get Ready to Paddle Your Pumpkins! October is dedicated to fall fun in Vernon. Since spring, 13 pumpkin growers have tended to their pride and joys to see who can grow the biggest and most seaworthy, or at least lake-worthy, pumpkins. They, along with other growers, will find out who the winners (300+ lbs) are on October 19 at 11 am. The weigh-in is held at Davison Orchards and there are prizes for the biggest pumpkin for both adults and kids.

On October 6, there’s Fall Family Photo Day, where you take a ride out to the pumpkin patch and get a free family photo. Make sure you visit Plant Bee Honey Farm and Meadery just down the road from Davison. Learn all about bees and honey and sample the delicious products made from honey, including honey mead! The Okanagan Fall Wine Festival runs from October 3 through to 13 with live music, wine tastings, sommelier battles and food pairings. There are 80 events in total (thewinefestivals.com) many of them taking place within 20 to 30 minutes of Vernon. If you don’t want to drive when you go wine tasting, connect with a tour operator who will happily take you to wineries, cideries and distilleries in the area.

Then on October 26, these giant pumpkins will be hollowed out and taken to Kin Beach for the great Pumpkin Classic. Cheer on participants as they paddle their pumpkins to victory!

Foodie Adventures Harvest season wouldn’t be complete without going on a foodie tour and there are plenty of them in Vernon.

Other fun fall activities include the Field of Screams and the ghost tours at O’Keefe Ranch. There are also Salmon Tours and Voyageur Canoe Tours for those who want to explore the area by water.

Okanagan Foodie Tours invites you to take your taste buds for a walk. It’s three hours of walking, learning and tasting your way through award-winning eateries and speciality shops. Should you prefer to be driven, there’s Cheers Okanagan Tours, which offer wine and spirits tours for Vernon, SilverStar and Lake Country. They also offer nine wheelchair-friendly tours for those who require it. For more information about accessible tourism activities call the Vernon Tourism Centre at 604-542-1415.

Food and Wine Fun There are dozens of reasons to celebrate and taste what Vernon has to offer. Davison Orchards has its September Apple Harvest Fest every weekend in September, celebrating everything apple: pies, juice, jelly and more. On October 4, there is Family Pumpkin Fest.

Farm Gates are huge in the Vernon area. Drive up to the gate, shake hands with a farmer and see what’s on offer that day. You’ll find everything from fruits and vegetables, to home-baked goods, cheeses and organic meats and poultry.

Mushroom lovers come from far and wide to take the wild-mushroom hunting tours. You don’t pick the mushroom; instead you learn how to identify edible mushrooms and which ones to avoid. Get Out There! Breathe in that fresh, crisp air and take part in some of the area’s best outdoor fun. On September 14, take part in the first ever Freaky Creeky 50 at Kalamalka Lake, with 10, 25, 50 and 100-km trail race runs. (bushbabestrailrunning.com/freaky-creeky) The next day, September 15, is the Kal Park Aqua Terra Event. Participate solo or with a team. There is a short course and a long course, and all include a Stand Up Paddleboard, a mountain bike portion and a trail run. Info at bushbabestrailrunning.com/aqua-terra For those who want to enjoy the outdoors at a slower pace, there’s the Okanagan Rail Trail (okanaganrailtrail. ca). This multi-user trail accommodates everyone from wheelchair to stroller, folks on two wheels or two feet. There’s also a bike shuttle that runs from Predator Ridge to the trails. It may be cooler but it’s still warm enough to go on a boat tour. Zip over the water in an airboat or take a chartered dinner tour. You can also rent a boat and captain for two to 10 guests. Destination Fun Vernon is a four season’s destination for couples, families and friends. This fall, explore the area, taking in the gorgeous fall colours and enjoying all Vernon has to offer. All of this is coupled with a prominent citrus zest that follows from the nose onto the palate. 2018 Rosé: Few wines so elegantly summarize life in the Okanagan as this rosé. VOLCANIC HILLS PAYS HOMAGE TO A PIECE OF OKANAGAN HISTORY KATIE TRUSCOTT

In 1958, Mehtab Gidda came to Canada from East Punjab, India with $5 in his pocket and the dream of a better life. He eventually settled in the Okanagan Valley. For the first 15 years Mehtab, his wife and three sons were the only Indo-Canadian family in West Kelowna. They purchased their first property in 1963 and soon became the largest apple farmers in the region.

By 1978 grapes began to arrive in the Okanagan Valley and Mehtab had a new vision: to cultivate vines of his own. One of the sons, Sarwan and his wife Sudarshana, began embracing viticulture. Grape vines slowly replaced the apple and cherry trees to feed the booming Okanagan wine industry. They soon found themselves in a prime position amid a rapidly growing community of local wine lovers.

Since Mehtab’s passing, the family’s 68 acres of vineyard remain managed by Sarwan and his family. In 2010, Volcanic Hills Estate Winery was established and the rest is history. But now history is in the making at Volcanic Hills with its latest release, Lapilli, a fortified cherry wine and the first fortified wine to be released by the winery.

Lapilli is Latin for “little stones.� They are volcanic droplets that cool into cherry-sized rocks. It’s a perfectly fitting name for this vibrant expression of the Okanagan Valley.

Celebrate the fall harvest by attending events at the biggest wine festival of the year — the Fall Okanagan Wine Festival, now in its 39th year. Jessica Tkachuk, the marketing and PR manager with the Okanagan Wine Festivals Society, said there are almost 100 events to attend, including four signature ones.

“It’s an exciting energetic time around the wineries, and there’s a lot going on. There’s a certain energy up and down the Valley that you can feel,” she said. “Every event brings such a unique profile to the table and excites the palate in different ways.” Awards Reception Don’t miss the British Columbia Lieutenant Governor’s Wine Awards & Reception on October 3 from 7 pm to 9:30 pm at the Laurel Heritage Packinghouse in Kelowna. “It’s our province’s most prestigious and oldest wine competition,” said Tkachuk. There are more than 500 entries from all over BC that will be sampled by an international panel of judges. It’s an incredible opportunity for people to taste top wines. Tickets are $59. WestJet Wine Tasting The ever-popular Fall WestJet Wine Tastings at YLW returns to the Kelowna International Airport on October 5 from 7 pm to 10 pm. “It’s one of a kind,” Tkachuk said. “It’s the largest wine tasting venue in the Okanagan. It’s held at the Carson Air hanger, so that’s unique and spectacular.” People look forward to the event from up and down the Valley. Tickets are $89. Young Chefs Event The Young Chefs event on October 10 showcases apprentice chefs from around the Okanagan as they compete to create a unique small plate that pairs perfectly with their partner winery.

It goes from 7 to 9:30 pm at Okanagan College’s Centre for Learning in Kelowna. “It’s a special way of celebrating young talent in the Okanagan and seeing what can happen when that young talent is paired with each of the incredible wineries,” said Tkachuk. PEN TICTON CRESCENT HILL’S OLDE ORCHARD MUSCAT EVOKES DELICIOUS MEMORIES ROSLYNE BUCHANAN Crescent Hill Winery’s Olde Orchard Pearl of Csaba Muscat is made from one of the oldest domesticated grape varieties in the wine world — Hungarian orange muscat.

Crescent Hill owner, Teresa Murray, remembers when her father, Glennallyn Murray, first started making wine in Port Moody. The name “Olde Orchard” is a nod to Old Orchard Park on Burrard Inlet at the northern end of the Shoreline Trail directly across from Rocky Point Park. To get to school with her friend Julie, they’d often cut across the train tracks and at low tide they’d try cutting across the mud flats. They succeeded the first time. During the second attempt Teresa recalls, “We almost died getting stuck in the mud.” Glennallyn Murray Glennallyn told his daughter stories of travelling to Hungary where yards were called gardens and everyone had their own Muscat vines — some 250 varieties from which to choose. Pearl of Csaba was developed in 1904 by viticulturist Adolph Stark, apparently by crossing Madeleine Angevine with Muscat Courtillier, and its name is from the commonly shortened form of the city Békéscsaba. Initially used as a table grape, it made its way to Canada with Hungarian, Romanian, Bulgarian and Czechoslovakian immigrants and was used in winemaking. Glennallyn’s love for winemaking intensified and he was heavily influenced by his German-speaking friend, Tom Hoenisch, a winemaker at Andrés Wines in Port Moody.

Says Teresa, “When Hoenisch moved to Penticton to make wine at Casabello Wines with head winemaker Elios Phinoitis in the late 1970s, Glennallyn sold his real estate holdings and bought land in Penticton. He created one of the area’s first vineyards where Crescent Hill Winery is now situated.” Crescent Hill Legacy While Crescent Hill didn’t officially become a winery until Teresa acted on her father’s deathbed wish, the tradition of making such wines is a family legacy. Nostalgic about lessons learned from her father, her time in high school, and the profile of stone fruit, melon, mango and citrus tasted in this wine, it seemed natural to call this wine Olde Orchard. As Teresa describes it, “A taste of the old world in a glass from our family to yours.” For this wine’s label, talented artist Janis Blyth portrayed a vibrant young “hippie” girl reminiscent of the colourful fashion of Teresa’s school years. Elements reflective of the aromas and flavours were included and, in keeping with the tradition of including the family’s ever-present pugs, so is the lovable dog QTPI. The 2016 was awarded gold in the 2018 Los Angeles International Wine Awards. The goal is to have visitors trade scraps for eggs. Smuggler’s Smoke House Sadly, another summer will soon end, and Red Rooster will be saying goodbye to Shayna and Josh Shulman and their talented staff for the season. Smuggler’s Smoke House has been tremendously popular with patrons. According to feedback, their barbecue was a huge hit. People also appreciated the vegetarian options and that all but two of the meals were gluten-free. The Smoke House will definitely be back next spring. In the meantime, barbecue lovers are encouraged to visit them at their Main Street location in Penticton where they’ll have all their favourites: beef brisket, pulled-pork, chicken and pork ribs.

Arrange radish on top of the beets, slightly offset. Add ¼ package of spring mix per dish, in centre of each plate. Sprinkle cranberries and walnuts over the mixture. Drizzle the Miso Dressing on the spring mix (to taste). Add three or four slices of avocado on top of the greens and top with a goat cheese ball. Drizzle the reduction around the edge of the plate. MISO DRESSING (MAKES 1 CUP) • 2 Tbsp gluten-free soy sauce • 2 Tbsp red miso paste • 2 Tbsp lemon juice fresh squeezed • 2 Tbsp orange juice fresh squeezed • 2 Tbsp rice wine vinegar • 1 Tbsp fresh ginger grated

• 1 Tbsp fresh garlic • 1/2 tsp sambal • 2 Tbsp sesame oil • 6 Tbsp olive oil • 1 bunch chopped cilantro • Kosher salt and smoked pepper to taste. Mix well and add to salad

ORANGE AND BALSAMIC REDUCTION Take equal parts, 1 cup each fresh, pulp-free orange juice and balsamic vinegar. Medium low heat until liquid reduces by three quarters. Do not boil or it will be bitter. Drizzle around side of plates.

On the heels of enjoying a big shaker event to celebrate its 10th anniversary, Meyer Family Vineyards (MFV) is hauling out the stemware again to toast its Platinum award for Chardonnay. The 2019 WineAlign National Wine Awards of Canada selected the MFV 2017 Tribute Series Chardonnay in the top one per cent of the category. Honouring Canadians Each year in its Tribute Series, the Meyers choose an inspirational Canadian to honour. This vintage honours Joannie Rochette, figure skating Olympic medalist. In this Chardonnay, minimalist winemaker Chris Carson features fruit from Meyers’ Old Main Road Vineyard in Naramata, planted in 1996. DJ Kearney, one of the judges and noted wine expert, described it as follows: “This wonderful Chardonnay is both swashbuckling and full of finesse. Bold lemon drop, peach, barely ripe pineapple.” Awards and Library Wines Also on the podium in 2019 WineAlign were MFV’s 2017 Micro Cuvee Pinot Noir McLean Creek and 2017 Micro Cuvee Old Main Rd Chardonnay, Okanagan Valley, for Silver; and 2018 Gewurztraminer and 2017 Chardonnay, both McLean Creek Vineyard, Okanagan Falls, for Bronze.

As a result, MFV tied as #10 small winery in Canada. Being selected in the WineAlign top 10 four years in a row is a true testament to MFV’s traditional French Burgundian approach in “crafting single vineyard wines of excellence.” WineAlign National awards are in keeping with the MFV strategy to submit to the largest and best competitions with the highest level of judging. This achievement is truly worth toasting as an assembly of 21 judges scrutinized 1,815 entries from 259 different wineries from across Canada in June 2019. As part of the 10th anniversary festivities, MFV is releasing its 2014 library wines in the tasting room and on its website, along with 2013 to 2016 Magnums. Library wines include those that have been cellared away for safekeeping only to be offered for special occasions. throughout BC, it’s quite an accomplishment to get recognition and Quinta Ferreira is thankful for its many accolades. Reds to savour as the mercury dips include excellent representations of single varietals such as Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec, Merlot and Syrah. Plus, there are wellbalanced blends such as Alagria, Merlot/ Cabernet, Mistura Tinto and Obra-Prima. The Alagria, for example, was described by noted wine columnist Anthony Gismondi as “a good example of chiseled black cherry fruit with threads of black raspberries, mint and wild berries. Balanced and structured, this should age well for another two or three years but would be perfect now with grilled pork.” Released for fall is Late Harvest and Quinta Ferreira’s first-ever sparkling wine. For those who want a taste of summer in the off-season, there may still be a few delightful choices like Rosé, Sauvignon Blanc, Viognier or Mistura Blanca. Seafood and soft cheese lovers will want to check Quinta Ferreira’s inventory for its oaked and unoaked Chardonnay.

Teams of two will compete in a grape stomp competition with added obstacles to elevate the experience. There is even a Little Food Stomps competition for children, so everyone can participate. “The grape stomp is one of my favourite events at Oliver Twist,” says winery owner Gina Harfman. “You’re sure to get messy, but you’re also sure to laugh a lot. The whole event is a ton of fun; it’s why we have people coming back every year!” In addition to the grape stomp, there’s also a Lucille Ball look-a-like contest. Prizes will be awarded to all winners, and there will be live music by local band Rebel Luv, along with food trucks and of course, Oliver Twist wines. Spectators are welcome, so bring your lawn chairs! As there are limited spots available for grape stompers, participants will want to register early. All proceeds from the $30 team registration fee go towards a local charity. Since its inception, Burrowing Owl Estate Winery has striven to achieve excellence in its continuous endeavours to become environmentally aware and sustainably conscious. The name of the winery itself pays homage to the endangered Burrowing Owl species in the region, with the winery offering both volunteer support as well as financial contributions to the Burrowing Owl Conservation Society. Championing Sustainability Burrowing Owl team members are always looking to innovate and continue their “green” journey. This is achieved with a whole-hearted commitment to both environmental and ecological sustainability. This commitment has helped dictate the building/ construction, operational and farming practices at the winery. Burrowing Owl demonstrates how sustainable systems and practices can bring both immediate and longterm

success to a business. These sought after wines are made from grapes that grow in vineyards fitted with drip irrigation systems. Integrated pest control management is also encouraged with insect-eating bluebirds and spiders. Over 100 bluebird boxes and two bat nurseries energize and motivate these creatures to feast in the vineyard. On the production side, the winery is multilevel and utilizes gravity-flow energy. Underground cellars provide a stable temperature that is ideal for barrel-aging the wine. Three sizeable solar electric systems were recently installed, increasing the size of the winemaking cellar by 7,500 square feet. The winery’s guest house and administrative offices are fitted with hot water solar panels, and geothermal energy powers the HVAC. Eight electric vehicle charging stations are available for visitor and staff use. A covered parking structure fitted with solar panels has added another boost of natural energy to the winery. Sustainability is a not a choice, it is a necessity in the world of wine. Burrowing Owl is fully committed to setting an industry example as “green” leaders in the Okanagan Valley.

Gehringer Brothers Estate Winery wowed judges at the Indy International Wine Competition, taking home 12 medals including Double Golds for their 2018 Desert Sun, 2018 Ehrenfelser, 2018 Pr. Res. Dry Riesling and Dry Rock Sauvignon Blanc. This independent, high-status, US wine competition is renowned for its scientific approach. Meet the 2018 Ehrenfelser This relatively new grape variety was created by Dr. Heinrich Birk, one of Walter Gehringer’s professors at the University of Geisenheim. It was achieved by crossing Riesling and Silvaner. Though it’s only grown by a handful of estates in the Okanagan, this German grape thrives in the region. A fruit-driven aromatic wine, it is known for its unique tannins, a quality not usually associated with white wines. The mild tannins give the wine a texture that’s intriguing, not overpowering, and it has a gorgeous mouthfeel. It works beautifully as an aperitif and as a complement to a lightly-spiced meal. Introducing the 2018 Desert Sun The winery’s signature white blend, Desert Sun, has a colourful aromatic intensity created through the careful blending of an exotic medley of whites. The estate grows nine different white varieties, giving winemakers the

opportunity to be creative. This wine is bursting with aromas of peaches, pears, gooseberries and strawberries. A lively wine with bright acidity and citrus notes, it’s the perfect addition to any social occasion. Meet the 2018 Cabernet Merlot This elegant vintage is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Merlot. A layered and complex wine, it features enticing flavours of small berry, blackcurrant and cassis, with the Merlot adding a ripe cherry component. Vertical Tasting But the highlight of the event will be a vertical tasting through time — a one day only sampling of three different vintages of Shotgun Wedding, the celebrated Cabernet Sauvignon dominant blend that’s been a staple of Hidden Chapel since day one. The Shotgun Wedding vintages offered are: 2012 A near perfect year for grape growing, before some unexpected late season rain cut the summer short. crop were complex and hardy. This vintage features the most enticing nose of the three vintages, and a body rich in spices but gentle with tannins. It’s accompanied by the soft presence of blueberries and cherries. BORDERTOWN CIDER AND WINERY: THE 2017 CABERNET FRANC – A VINTAGE WORTH THE WAIT LESLEY BUXTON

Cabernet Franc wine lovers — the wait is over! The latest vintage of Bordertown’s flagship wine, Cabernet Franc 2017, is now available. This is a wine rich with pedigree. Previous vintages sold out very quickly and this wine was celebrated by both critics and wine lovers alike. To say expectations are high for this latest incarnation would be an understatement. The winery is constantly receiving calls from customers eager to get their hands on the new release. The 2015 Cabernet Franc was a gamechanger for the relatively new Osoyoos winery, based in sight of the US border. It was lauded by legendary wine critic John Schreiner, who awarded the Cabernet Franc 91 points. Ocean Wise Executive Chef Ned Bell impressed guests in New York City at the prestigious James Beard House by pairing it with BC salmon with mushrooms, celery root and hearts, and black truffle dressing. It also did exceptionally well against its peers, taking home a silver medal at The National WineAlign Wine Awards of Canada (NWAC).

This wine is a gorgeous deep red in colour. It combines a heady blend of delicious aromas. Imagine rich tobacco, dark spice, herbaceous green pepper and subtle hints of mint. Brilliantly composed, this wine features flavours of dark berries, mild pepper and warm background oak. It was fermented for 18 months in natural French oak, giving it a beautiful balance and delightful silky tannins. Cabernet Francs are celebrated foodfriendly wines, due to their herbaceous nature. Experiment with pairings like goat cheese and savoury biscuits, garlic crusted roast pork, rosemary-seasoned rack of lamb, grilled trout, classic tomato sauce pastas and barbecue-roasted red pepper and eggplant. The possibilities are endless.

Osoyoos is a perfect fall destination for a splash of wine and a splash of fall colour. With the landscape changing over the past few decades from fruit trees to grape vines, Osoyoos has found itself awash in the beauty of autumn. “There are so many people internationally and locally who go east to see fall colours, so they go to Quebec or they go to Ontario,” said Kelley Glazer, the executive director of Destination Osoyoos. “You actually don’t have to.” Osoyoos wasn’t always considered a fallcolours destination. “Now we’ve got all these vineyards. They’re up on the slopes and they’re perfectly manicured in rows, and all of the different vines change colour at different times, and they also have different colours,” she said. “The colours linger longer because of our desert climate.” Wine and Luxury Many wineries in Osoyoos are small, which makes them perfect places to meet the proprietors. “There’s a really good chance you’re going to meet the guy that planted the grapes, coddled the grapes, picked the grapes, made the wine and is pouring it for you,” Glazer said. Sense of Nostalgia Meanwhile, the addition of the Area 27 racetrack has added a heightened sense of speed, adventure and luxury.

“We’re in a unique situation — we are nostalgic, yet we’re being introduced to a brand new demographic of luxury car owners who like fine wine, fine dining and beautiful resorts,” said Glazer. “For a town of 5,100 people, we have three first-class resorts.” Osoyoos also draws regular people who visit every year and stay in the same motels. “There’s a whole strip of motels that were built in the 1950s and maintain the nostalgia of those days with all of the modern conveniences of today.
