COME CELEBRATE A QUARTER CENTURY WITH TINHORN CREEK VINEYARDS This summer, Tinhorn Creek Vineyards celebrates 25 years of achievement, quality and innovation. Established in 1994 when the wine scene in Oliver was still in its infancy, Tinhorn Creek grew alongside the region, quickly gaining the reputation as a pioneer in the BC wine industry. This past quarter century, the South Okanagan wine region has flourished and grown.

KATIE TRUSCOTT

A Leader in Viticulture Tinhorn Creek first established itself in the 1990s when the majority of surrounding farms planted fruits and vegetables. Grapevines were uncommon. Tinhorn Creek became a leader in viticulture, inspiring others to follow suit. It was the third winery to open south of Penticton and over the years has become a key example of success, paving the way forward for other emerging wineries. The team at Tinhorn Creek Vineyards now looks ahead to an even brighter future in an evergrowing, blooming and booming wine industry.

• Have you ever wondered what a day in the life of a viticulturist is like? Come enjoy a vineyard walk and sip on May 3 from 3 to 6 pm with Tinhorn’s charming Andrew Moon. Ask questions and learn all about vineyard practices, sustainability and the Golden Mile Bench sub-appellation. Afterwards, enjoy an alfresco reception with wine and canapés at Miradoro Restaurant. • Come to Rosé All Day with a flight of delicious BC rosés, tasty tapas from locally sourced ingredients, live music and breathtaking views. It all happens May 5 at Miradoro.

Celebrations and Events Leading up to the anniversary this summer, there are some exciting, not-to-be-missed events happening at the winery.

• Mother’s Day is May 12. Join Tinhorn Creek along with Chef Jeff Van Geest and his talented team to tour, sip and savour, making it an unforgettable afternoon for Mom.

• Miradoro Restaurant re-opens March 1 with a special value $39 three-course menu for the entire month. Come greet the start of spring with fine cuisine and sweeping views of the South Okanagan from the restaurant patio.

So Much to Do! Anniversary festivities will officially kick off with an open house on June 1. Expect loads of entertainment, wine, canapés and fun.

• Back by popular demand are communal table dinners at Miradoro Restaurant. These bring locals and visitors together to celebrate regional food and wine, and feature fare that is local, rustic, simple, straightforward and seasonal. Held every Tuesday from April to May for $38 per person. Make your reservation today. • Bring the kids down for an Easter egg hunt amid the vines followed by an Easter brunch on Sunday, April 21 from 11 am to 3 pm.

The return of summer brings with it the return of Tinhorn’s extremely popular Canadian Concert Series. From May to September, guests can come soak up the sun and enjoy some of Canada’s top musical talent. Come sip award-winning wines and take in the spectacular views of the Southern Okanagan Valley from the amphitheatre.

Summertime yoga takes place every Saturday at 9 am from June 1 until August 31. Enjoy an hour of outdoor yoga on the grass in the amphitheatre, and start the weekend with some good vibes. Over the next 25 years, Tinhorn Creek will continue to offer premium and innovative guest experiences in fine wine and dining. The award-winning Miradoro Restaurant is one of the best in the province and shouldn’t be missed. Chef Jeff Van Geest always goes that extra mile to remain at the forefront of cuisine, utilizing what nature provides by foraging and sourcing local ingredients, expressing the South Okanagan through plate presentation and taste. Sparkling Celebrations Too! In honour of 25 years, Tinhorn Creek is releasing an exciting sparkling wine in May. This traditional-method Blanc de Noir sparkling has spent two years en Tirage, and is the winery’s first traditional-method sparkling. Eighty cases will be available for purchase both on site and in the restaurant. This bubbly is built to age, making it a wonderful collector’s purchase for the cellar. It’s also a delight to pop and enjoy now. According to winemaker Andrew Windsor, 2016 was a wonderful year in the vineyard and provided some of the best grapes for sparkling, which is reflected the unique terroir of the Black Sage Bench in this wine. Come join Tinhorn Creek at one or all of the exciting events this spring and summer and help the team celebrate 25 glorious years “drinking the creek dry.”

BENVENUTO – NEW CHEF AT TERRAFINA ROSLYNE BUCHANAN

It's fitting to say welcome in Italian to Chef James Hanna, who RauDZ Creative Concepts has announced will be leading the culinary team at Terrafina at Hester Creek this season. Passionate about eating and cooking Italian food, Chef Hanna promises a focussed Italian approach to the menu. Fresh, local cuisine expressed with a homestyle Italian warmth is a perfect match. After all, Terrafina’s name is derived from the Italian, meaning “from the earth.” This bewitching, Tuscan-style restaurant is nestled by the vines of Hester Creek Estate Winery in Oliver; however, the ambiance embodies the iconic old country. Comfort and Traditional Dishes Chef James Hanna’s menu to kick off the 2019 season (terrafinabyraudz.com/ terrafina-menu/) is an opera of decadent items that highlight comfort food and traditional dishes. Think al dente pastas such as orecchiette, linguini, cavatelli, ravioli as well as risotto and gnocchi. Pizzas from the Forno oven include taglio-style, hand-pulled dough, Naples-style thin crust

6

and Roman-style pan baked. Get your greens on with Caesar and radicchio/frisee salads. Weekly fresh sheets will present such specials as veal saltimbocca, stuffed calamari and fennel-crusted albacore tuna. The popular Terrafina Boards return with selections of bread, charcuterie, spreads, tapenades and other antipasti. Desserts, too, slant Italian with artisan cheeses, cannoli, panna cotta, gelato, sorbetto, chestnut chocolate pudding and lemon tart. New Chef, Familiar Faces For those who love their Hester Creek wines, the library wine offerings are expanded and include The Judge. To go Italian all the way, Terrafina presents an Italian wine list. Although Chef Hanna is new in Terrafina’s kitchen, other familiar faces return to frontof-house, including many well-loved servers. Kayleigh Macmillan is taking on the restaurant manager role — her enthusiastic demeanour paired with professionalism is welcomed by all. Chef Hanna may be new to Terrafina at Hester Creek, but he comes from his role as Chef de Cuisine, RauDZ Creative

Concepts Ltd. (Terrafina’s operators). He has enjoyed a long history of working with Chef Rod Butters and Audrey Surrao. Following his apprenticeship in White Rock, BC, he was sous chef for Fresco, becoming Chef de Cuisine when Fresco morphed into the fine casual dining RauDZ Regional Table. He

then departed to eat and cook his way across the country. Chef Hanna has been an integral part of seven culinary teams that have competed in Gold Medal Plates. In early 2018, he returned to RauDZ from Newfoundland after a number of years honing his skills at other restaurants, including Vancouver’s top

Italian restaurant, Villa Del Lupo. Chef Hanna has always been passionate about and skilled in Italian cuisine and is excited to lead Terrafina’s Italian-focussed menu and culinary team. It’ll be a fun and delicious year. As the Italians say, mangia! (Let’s eat!)

THIS YEAR, DO THINGS DIFFERENTLY WITH A DIFFERENT KIND OF WINERY BLAKE ALLEN

Spring. It’s the start of a new wine season here in the Okanagan, which means it’s a time for new beginnings. With the snow gone and the sun back, it’s an ideal time to be sampling new wines, making new memories and seeking out new experiences. Those looking for something different are looking for Sandhill Winery. This is British Columbia’s first urban winery and it’s tucked away just off of Richter Street in the heart of downtown Kelowna. It might, quite literally, be right up your alley! A Winery Experience Like No Other This recently renovated historic institution is modern, warm and spacious. It features several different tasting rooms and tasting experiences along with a lounge and virtual winery event that takes patrons across the Okanagan. Starting this spring, Sandhill Winery is partnering with Oxygen Studios to offer yoga and wine sessions in its spacious lounge. Professional yogis will lead classes for all skill levels. Sessions are followed by guided wine samplings, led by Sandhill’s own professionals, at the neighbouring

tasting bar. Details can be found online (sandhillwines.ca). Wine Club And speaking of new experiences … launching on March 7 is Sandhill’s newest Wine Club. This six-bottle quarterly club offers free shipping on cases and 15 per cent off wine and merchandise purchased at the winery. It will only feature the small lot wines, including exclusive access to the coveted Small Lot Malbec and fabled Petit Verdot. This rich and fruity red is light on tannins, big in flavour and so rare in the Okanagan that only 29 cases are produced each year by Sandhill. The launch party will be catered and feature live entertainment. Many of these small production wines are expected to move fast, so budding connoisseurs are advised not to wait too long. After all, it’s always best to start your wine season off early.

F ROM T H E E DI T O R MARCH/APRIL 2019

SPRING IS IN THE AIR Winter is finally behind us and like most, I’m ready for spring! While the vineyards may have looked stark and cold these past few months, and the wineries quieter than normal, there was a lot going on behind the scenes. Vineyard workers have been meticulously pruning and grooming the vines, ensuring they’ll produce the best grapes possible for the next season. Over winter, the new wines sat in tanks and barrels and slowly developed their complex flavours and mouthfeel. Inside tasting rooms, wineries reorganized and readied themselves for those visitors from far and wide anxious to discover something new, or to get their hands on a seasonal favourite. Late winter and early spring is the time winemakers filter the wine, create their blends and bottle their creations for us to enjoy. Whites and rosés are made ready for their 2019 debut to the world. While vineyards and tasting rooms await the longer, warmer days, chefs are creating and testing new recipes to go with new and old releases. More and more winery restaurants have vegan, vegetarian, organic, gluten-free and dairy-free options from which to choose. It’s not uncommon for a winery to grow their own produce and herbs. That’s not to say the meat and seafood lovers are out of luck. On the contrary, many chefs choose to use Ocean Wise seafood as well as locally grown and organic meats. And let’s not forget the tours, festivals and events! Every year, local wineries and wine associations put on some spectacular events that somehow get better and better. There are about 275 wineries of all sizes in BC now, and each loves to celebrate its creations. While the larger ones don’t start until May or June, there are plenty of special events in March and April. There are fondue Fridays and Sunday night suppers. Local mountains host gourmet ski weeks, vertical and vintages, and wine, cider and spirit festivals. There’s Chef Meets Grape in Vancouver, as well as jazz nights paired with wine in the Okanagan. You’ll find fun events throughout all BC’s wine regions, with wines showcased from all over the province. There’s so much wine-related fun to have here in BC. Just pace yourself, we’ve got a fantastic wine season ahead of us!

SUMMERHILL: A MODEL OF MAN AND NATURE AS CANADA’S MOST VISITED WINERY ROSLYNE BUCHANAN

Summerhill Pyramid Organic Winery welcomes guests in every season and encourages all to be fellow stewards of the planet. Spring blossoms signal more opportunities to embrace the scenic setting and stunning vistas along with extraordinary wine and cuisine. Dine in full splendour outdoors. Stroll pathways through the biodynamic vineyards, gardens and nature preserves. Come and visit the historic First Contact Exhibit, featuring an original 1800s cabin next to the Makwala Hall Memorial Kekuli. Pyramid Power There are no tasting fees nor a fee to experience Summerhill’s famous pyramid — second only to the Great Pyramid of Egypt for precision and alignment. It offers a sacred geometry chamber for meditation and reflection. Founder/proprietor Stephen Cipes’ goal from the outset was to create outstanding organic wines and share this property’s beauty. Today, he has his adult sons working beside him. The family enthusiasm is reflected in Summerhill’s recruitment of the best people and development of staff. “We urge all visitors to enter the pyramid silently and remain still with eyes closed and focussed on their breath. We’ve proven in over 30 years of experiments with liquids that it clarifies them, bringing out their essence. We humans are mostly liquid and so this is a unique and precious opportunity to go within.” Most Visited Winery It’s little wonder that Summerhill lays claim to “Canada’s most visited winery” distinction. Customer satisfaction ratings are consistently high. Of course, the commitment to producing exquisite wines is a big factor. Summerhill is the largest producer of certified wines in Canada. Certified organic since 2007, it was BC’s first winery to receive Demeter Biodynamic certification in 2012. Summerhill’s stewardship of the land, surrounding community and environment is truly inspiring. Awards and Leadership In the process, the portfolio of Cipes sparkling wines and Summerhill icewine, red and white wines has earned some of the wine world’s highest honours, including trophies and gold medals from France and England and designation as “Canadian Wine Producer of the Year” at an International Wine & Spirit competition. Cipes Brut is distinguished as the single most awarded wine in Canada, achieving gold medals for 26 years consecutively. “All this for allowing nature to speak for herself!” says Stephen Cipes. “She does speak, and we listen. There is divine purpose in every blessed drop.” The Cipes offer leadership to other wineries and citizens as they champion initiatives for the Okanagan to go organic. “We’ve made great progress with the Organic Okanagan DECLARATION to convert the entire valley. The date is extended to 2025 to accommodate the many conversions underway,” Stephen says, urging, “Join us to convert your own lawn and garden to organic. Everyone is invited to sign the DECLARATION at organicokanagan.com.” Culinary Revolution A culinary revolution is also part of Summerhill’s pledge. Executive Winery Chef Jeremy Luypen shares the Cipes’ commitment to offer “extraordinary organic dining.” The cuisine depends on local organic and sustainable growers/producers, and Summerhill’s own permaculture-style organic gardens overseen by Gabe Cipes, biodynamicist/permaculturist. Guests can taste how dishes are elevated through Summerhill’s use of the finest ingredients. Luypen notes the menu at the Summerhill Pyramid Bistro has evolved to having a plant-based emphasis. Vegetables and vegan dishes get top billing as the menu is divided between the categories “plant based” and “from the sea and land.” Just one delicious and highly popular example is a transformation of tempura oyster mushrooms and vegan tzatziki to create Vegan Calamari. Selections such as the Organic Grass Fed Burger or Pork Belly Ramen are sure to please the meat lovers in your group. For seafood enthusiasts, items like Pan-Fried Arctic Char or Prawn and Pesto Pasta are taste treats.

MARCH/APRIL 2019

Dine in the restaurant or order Gourmet Meals to Go. The arrival of spring heralds the return of the Small Plates Extraordinary Organic Eats!, which expands the food services. Says Cipes, “I like to call it fast-food organic. This family-friendly food service complements our 200-seat restaurant with delicious options to enjoy at our picnic tables, other settings on our property, and to take home.” Open Year Round Summerhill is open daily, year-round and provides many ways to experience its wines, including the main wine shop tasting room, new VIP tasting rooms, the Robert Bateman Gallery tasting bar, the gazebo and the warehouse tasting station. By popular demand, the pyramid is open all day for visits. Inside its theatre, guests can enjoy movies highlighting the wine, the family and the winery. Upstairs, the pyramid provides a perfect space in which to meditate. For those who wish a guided experience, a tour is available at 2 pm every day. DISCOVER A LITTLE ITALY PERCHED HIGH ABOVE THE LAKE BLAKE ALLEN

RENEW YOUR BODY AND SOUL THIS SPRING AT VOLCANIC HILLS SUE HARPER

They say great wine takes you places. But it’s more than just the wine; it’s the people and the experiences that accompany this humble drink that whisk you away to places afar. Ciao Bella Winery is an authentic piece of Italy, tucked away on a hill right here in the Okanagan. You’ll find it perched high atop the West Kelowna Farm Loop on a soothing country road that winds its way above the noise of the highway and offers idyllic views of the lake. Like the old vines, owners Roberto and Sharon Fiume’s own family roots reach deep into the Napoli region of Italy, and they’ve brought their traditional Italian heritage not only to their wine making, but to the ambiance of their winery itself. Guests are always welcomed with a warm benvenuto and a freshly prepared plate of spuntini (charcuterie, the Italian way). Be sure to soak up the spring sun with a picnic in the garden. You may even hear Roberto and the vineyard workers calling out to each other in Italian. This is Italian wine, done the Italian way. A True Taste of Italy Ciao Bella is where you’ll find the true taste of Italy.

Spring is the season for renewal. At Volcanic Hills Estate Winery look for two fantastic new releases. The 2017 Magma White — the winery’s flagship white — has a slightly drier style than in previous years. Marketing Manager Kathryn Zondag says it comes across the palate “as warmth and orchard — sunset in a glass. It’s a perfect match for a traditional Easter dinner, pairing beautifully with baked ham, cloves and applesauce.

Be sure to sample the: 2018 Pinot Grigio — A classic, off-dry white defined by strong notes of green apples and apricots complemented by its calming citric nose. 2016 RosÊ — A fruitful nose and prominent notes of strawberries, rhubarb and a hint of watermelon that lingers on the palate. 2016 Pinot Nero — This mediumbodied red won two Gold Medals at both of Canada’s premier National Wine Awards. An aroma of dark cherries follows from the nose onto the palate where it’s paired with notes of dark chocolate. This is not the first time Ciao Bella has been recognized as the home of BC’s best Pinot Noir, and this vintage is a fine illustration of why.

Produced from some of the oldest vines in the province, the 2017 single vineyard, small lot Gewurtztraminer, a wine Zondag says is sometimes misunderstood, has a creamy texture not often found outside the Alsace region. Only 292 cases were produced, so quantities are limited.

of the new releases, go to the website (volcanichillswinery.com) and sign up for the newsletter. You will have first access to purchases, and you’ll never miss out on the winery’s special events. Sip and Dip Workshops Sip some of your favourite wines while creating a beautiful, one-of-a-kind, water-marbled silk scarf. Workshops run throughout March and April. For the April workshop, Colour Drop Design will be joined by Smallprint Okanagan. Fingerprints, footprints, even paw prints can be transferred directly onto silver jewelry. These keepsakes will be ready for Mother’s Day and make a perfect gift. Finally, get your “zen on May 5 during the spring wine festival. This year, Volcanic Hills has partnered with ORANJ Fitness to bring a yoga class onto the outdoor patio overlooking the lake, followed by a three-course wine pairing brunch created specially by Blu Saffron Bistro chef Colin Rayner.

Both these wines were released to Wine Club members in February and will be ready for purchase in the wine shop in late April or early May. If you want to keep on top

CRESCENT HILL SPARKLING DEBUTS TO GREAT REVIEWS ROSLYNE BUCHANAN

Bestowed with 27 wine awards last year, Crescent Hill Winery barely turned the calendar to 2019 when its Vendetta Sparkling wine was tagged as People’s Favourite during the 21st Annual Sun Peaks Winter Okanagan Wine Festival. The name Vendetta is consistent with Crescent Hill’s playful stance not to take things too seriously, yet is layered in history. The Oxford Dictionary defines vendetta as “a prolonged bitter quarrel with or campaign against someone.” That brings us to the Verdelet grapes of which Vendetta is comprised. The label says it all: “The battle was gruelling. Victory depended on endurance. Five rows rescued from the great pull out! The victory is complete!" This Verdelet is sparkling to celebrate her comeback in a spectacular way. Strong sturdy flavours with a lasting taste. This wine features notes of pear, apple, grapefruit, honeysuckle and spices with a sourdough finish. Saving the Verdelet Teresa Murray-Wiseman says her father, Glennallyn Murray, who planted one of Penticton’s earliest vineyards, hated to see waste. His friend participated in BC’s great pull-out of French hybrids — a federally and provincially funded program in 1989 to remove older vines to replant vinifera varieties. Glennallyn couldn’t resist rescuing five rows of Verdelet. Three pickup truck loads later, the renegade vines had a new home. Despite the odds, the Verdelet vines survived and thrived. The grapes were primarily used in blends until Teresa tasted the sparkling wines made from Verdelet in northeastern states like New York. It was then that Crescent Hill’s first sparkling wine was born. It was an instant hit. As its descriptor says: “Warning: some battles pick you!” Local Artist Creates Vendetta Label Vendetta’s label, designed by noted local artist Janis Blyth (janisblyth. com), portrays strong imagery when bringing this delightful sparkling wine to fruition. Note the strong tattooed woman wearing a grapevine tiara and armour, alluding to the struggle of the vines and that of women in the wine industry at times. Beside her is a small, hair-lip dog, which is Lulubelle, the pug Teresa’s daughter rescued, and a true survivor. The raven on her shoulder is a bird of safety and regarded as a messenger between heaven and earth. While the bee has a sting, it suggests enjoying life’s nectar and is a symbol of community and personal power. Of course, the warrior woman holds a “V” for victory. Awards and Fun Speaking of victory, these wine awards included four double-golds, plus a gold for Cristal’s Fault in San Francisco. For a full list of wines and awards see crescenthillwinery.com. Teresa and her family take winemaking seriously; however, they can’t help but have fun naming and marketing Crescent Hill wines. Taste the quality of Crescent Hill wines and plan your visit to the winery for more intriguing stories.

Yummy Wine Cocktails Here are a few of our favourite wine cocktails. While some may feel mixing wine with other spirits or soda is sacrilege, others will be pleasantly surprised by how they taste! It’s not time to put away that red wine just yet! Pour ¾ cup of red wine and ¼ cup of 7Up, Sprite or lemon-lime soda over ice. Garnish with a slice of lime or add sliced lemon and orange to the glass. Bring spring to your cocktail by mixing 4 oz of port with an ounce of apple juice over crushed ice. Stir and add mint as a garnish. Put some sparkle in your glass with Brut and cherry jam. Add 1/3 oz lemon juice, a teaspoon of cherry jam, 1/3 oz vodka and 3 oz of Brut into a cocktail shaker and shake. Strain into a champagne glass and enjoy. Give your Pinot Noir a new purpose in life. Add 2 oz of grapefruit soda, ½ oz of lime juice, ½ oz of maple syrup, 1.5 oz of tequila and 1.5 oz of Pinot Noir into a cocktail shaker. Mix well and strain into a glass over ice. Garnish with a lime wedge. Chardonnay makes a great base for a fun cocktail. Muddle 5 grapes and 2 mint sprigs in a glass. Add 1.25 oz of vanilla vodka, 1 oz of Chardonnay and ½ oz of lemon juice in a cocktail shaker. (Add ½ oz of simple syrup if you like sweet drinks.) Then shake, pour into a champagne flute and top if off with 4 or 5 oz of prosecco. Delicious!

MORE THAN A TASTING – A WHOLE EXPERIENCE SUE HARPER

Spring — time for a road trip! And there’s no better destination than Clos du Soleil, an artisanal winery located in the Similkameen Valley. The tasting room reopens seven days a week starting March 15, and guests will have the chance to experience what Clos du Soleil is all about. Tasting and purchasing wine are just part of the experience. Visitors are invited into the winery where winemaker and managing director Mike Clark is happy to take a break and explain what’s going on. Come for the Wine, Stay for a Picnic With the weather warming up, the licensed picnic area is a great place to soak up the local beauty. Bring a lunch or purchase locally produced cheese, dried meats, crackers and seasonal fruit inside. A walk in the vineyard is highly recommended. The farm is managed as a complete eco-system, not a monoculture, which means that as well as grapevines, you’ll see diverse plant life, small animals and birds. Adopt-a-Row Imagine your name on the end-post of one of the vineyard’s rows. This unique opportunity is offered to members of the wine club, Soleil 160. Members in the top two tiers can adopt a row of their choice. They can even help pick their adopted grapes during harvest.

Moreover, many of the winery’s small lot wines are reserved strictly for wine club members. The critically acclaimed Cabernet Franc 2016 is one of these. Anyone can join Soleil 160 at any time of year. If you’re interested in the Cabernet Franc (which will be included in the March shipment) be sure sign up online by late March. Decanter World Wine Awards Clos du Soleil wines are regularly recognized among the best in the province, and in May 2018, they won three silver medals at the Decanter World Wine Awards in London. Clos du Soleil attributes its great wines to using organic grapes, grown biodynamically with what Clark describes as a “hands-off” approach to winemaking. The resulting wine is pure and unmanipulated — “a transparent expression of the land.”

OLIVER HIDDEN CHAPEL: ONE OF THE LAST TRULY HIDDEN GEMS OF OLIVER BLAKE ALLEN The town of Oliver may be small,

but it carries on its shoulders the well-earned reputation as Canada’s Wine Capital. The wine scene here is big, plentiful and competitive – and touring the many wineries of this sundrenched region can at times seem daunting. There are so many wineries to choose from and there’s simply never enough time.

But the true test of any winery out here is the test of time. And tucked away to the north of the town, one of the area’s true gems has quietly sat for more than a decade, making a rich portfolio of award-winning wines. You’ll find Hidden Chapel about 40 minutes south of Penticton and a mere five minutes north of Oliver. It overlooks the many vineyards and orchards of Oliver from atop its perch. It is walled away from the rest of the valley by a lush garden and an almost fairytale-like forest, complete with a quaint, little chapel tucked away within. It’s easy to let the stresses of travel melt away up here with a glass of wine and the chorus of songbirds. Taste the History It’s not just the tranquility that makes this a must-visit winery. Patrons can literally taste the recent history of this valley through a sampling of the well-aged reds, as varied in vintage as they are in tannins and flavours. They are diverse enough to ensure that everyone finds a red to their preference. Should you be looking for your next favourite white, you’ll find a range of richly fruitful wines, both off-dry and dry. Don’t forget to grab some sparkling wine and toast the town from a gardenlined table overlooking the valley below. Hidden gems are seldom this well-hidden.

BLACK HILLS WINERY WELCOMES WINEMAKER ROSS WISE TO THE TEAM KATIE TRUSCOTT

Black Hills Winery welcomes the fiercely talented Ross Wise to the fold as lead winemaker. Ross brings over 16 years of unique and broad wine experience to Black Hills. Big Goals, Big Moves The fairytale-like wine journey of Ross Wise is inspiring and impressive. Ross grew up on a sheep farm in Central Otago, New Zealand. He enjoyed farm life, but felt a greater calling toward viticulture. He completed his degree in viticulture and began his career with Crossroads Winery — a small winery in Hawkes Bay, New Zealand. He moved on to the great vineyards of Felton Road, where he spent two seasons while finishing an Advanced Diploma in winemaking. Given the choice between viticulture and winemaking, he decided his heart lay with the latter. He spent three years creating vintages at Grove Mill Winery in Marlborough. Wise’s interest in Canadian, coolclimate wine resulted in him moving to Ontario where he spent six harvests with Flat Rock Cellars. Wise then opened a winemaking and viticulture consulting company called Wise Consulting. His company worked with brands such as Organized Crime, Rosewood and The Good Earth. This allowed him to experience working with an array of styles and grape varieties, such as traditionalmethod sparkling wine, terroir-driven, coolclimate varietal wines and even appassimentostyle red wines.

In 2015, Wise completed the WSET Diploma and jumped straight into the gruelling Master of Wine program. He will complete the MW program this summer. In addition, he is also an experienced brewer, a qualified chef, cheese connoisseur and master bread-maker. A Great Pairing Wise and Black Hills Estate Winery are the perfect pairing. Wise loves the science behind growing and making wine, as well as the comraderaderie found in the cellar thanks to 12-hour days. He’s excited to dive into his new role at Black Hills and is getting to know the 2018 wines in barrel, and honing in on the identity of the winery blends. “This is a great opportunity to be part of the next chapter of one of the Okanagan’s most recognized and respected wineries,” Wise said. “The ability to focus on making premium red wines such as Nota Bene is a big draw for me.” He looks forward to maintaining the consistency of the Black Hills wine range and applying his level of expertise and style to the renowned line of wines. There is a unique sense of place, terroir as they call it, with the Black Hills wines. All of the vineyards and grapes are sourced from the Black Sage Bench in the South Okanagan. Much like Ross Wise and his striking calibre of experience, Black Hills is a brand of esteem, lifestyle and rarity. The combination of winemaker meets winery is sure to bring a whole new level of prestige to an already premium brand.

OLIVER WELCOMING A FRESH VINTAGE AT DESERT HILLS AMBER RAE BOUCHARD

2019 is bringing exciting things to the BC wine industry and the South Okanagan is no exception. An unusual growing season last summer was characterized by lower ambient temperatures and decreased sun exposure due to the prevalence of smoke throughout the valley, resulting in an exceptional new vintage. Exceptional Fruit Quality According to the BC Wine Institute, the Okanagan wine industry embraced a healthy harvest season that documented exceptional vineyard fruit quality. September witnessed a shift towards greater diurnal temperature swings, resulting in softened tannins and clean, fruit-forward profiles, ultimately creating remarkably well-balanced wines. What this means to wine lovers is an exciting kickoff to the season, with Spring Wine Festival events and the release of the much anticipated 2018 portfolios.

New Releases The Desert Hills wine shop is proud to welcome some exciting new releases, including the stunning 2018 Gamay Noir and the sumptuous 2016 Petit Verdot. Family owned and operated, the Governor General award-winning winery is eager to share the release of a fresh vintage of white wines including a spicy off-dry Gewurztraminer and a Sauvignon Blanc. Wine Club The Desert Hills Wine Club is always welcoming new members who enjoy privileged access to library wines, customizable wine shipments, discounts on purchases and an exclusive invite to the annual release party. Swing by the shop April 1 for the official seasonal re-opening of the Black Sage Bistro, as well as the wine shop, where tasting fees are always donated to a charitable foundation created by the Toor family.

GEHRINGER BROTHERS ESTATE WINERY: THE LEGACY CONTINUES WITH MORE DOUBLE PLATINUM WINS AMBER RAE BOUCHARD

Receiving a Double Platinum Award from the famed Wine Press Northwest Platinum Competition is the kind of honour most wineries aspire to, and for good reason. To simply qualify, a wine must have won Gold or better at one of the major international wine competitions charted by the organization. This year’s 19th competition brought together 655 wines from British Columbia, Idaho, Oregon and Washington. Judging took place over three days, by three panels of experts, who determined how the wines were ranked. A coveted Double Platinum is only awarded when all the judges on a panel are unanimous. King of Platinum Gehringer Brothers captured three Double Platinum medals, along with five Platinum medals, and five Double Golds, firmly establishing that it’s still the reigning “King of the Platinum.” The winery has collected at least one Platinum medal every year except 2001 and 2006. Despite the winery’s success, they’re not resting on their laurels. Their goal is a continued commitment to excellence, a description which perfectly defines their 2017 Private Reserve Pinot Gris — declared “rapturous” by one judge. It’s almost a steal at only $13.99. According to Wine Press North West, it’s well-defined by its “backbone of grapefruit and lime,” it has a “creamy mid-palate of strawberry pie” and a finish of “lemon peel with minerality.”

Another wine generating a great deal of attention is the 2017 Ehrenfelser, Okanagan Valley, a Riesling based white variety developed in Geisenheim, West Germany, where winemaker Walter Gehringer studied the art of winemaking. Beautifully aromatic, with honeydew melon and apricot on the nose, the dynamic palate is accented with pear, lime, dried apricot, clover honey and blanched almonds. The finish is clean with a hint of anise. The wine is a wonderful deal at only $13.99. Both these wines are available at the winery and fine private liquor and grocery stores, as well as BCLDB stores. Visit the winery soon and discover these award-winning wines for yourself.

OLIVER TWIST LOOKING FORWARD TO FRUITFUL 2019

ADEGA ON 45TH ESTATE WINERY: GREAT WINES FOR EVERY SEASON LESLEY BUXTON

JENNA HICKMAN

Oliver Twist Estate Winery is gearing up for another year of fantastic events and a few surprises that will have you counting down the days until your next visit. Following a standout 2018 harvest, winery owner and winemaker Gina Harfman has a feeling this could be Oliver Twist’s best year yet. “The 2018 harvest can be summarized in one word — abundance — in grapes and sunshine,” says Harfman. “Our grapes reached full maturity, and the flavour development and acidity levels were nice and balanced — we even doubled production!” Reserve Release After 15 months of cellaring in French oak barrels, the 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon Proprietor’s Reserve will be released this spring. Awarded 92 points by John Schreiner, this red is bursting with rich tannins and the bold flavours of black cherry and toasty vanilla, making it the perfect accompaniment to a cosy night in. With only 50 cases produced, you’ll want to pick up your

bottle today. Oliver Twist will also be releasing its 2018 Unoaked Chardonnay and a 2018 Viognier. Events Kicking off the event season is the Fourth Annual Customer Appreciation Day on March 9, from 10 am until 5 pm, on a drop-in basis. As a thank you to loyal customers, there will be delicious food, wine specials and contests, as well as the entire portfolio of wines. Another event is on May 11. It’s the Third Annual Cheesemaking Class, hosted by Naomi De Ruiter, the Modern Milkmaid and Artisan Cheesemaker of Birdsong Farm in Enderby. Check the website for details: olivertwistwinery.com. “There aren’t too many places in the Okanagan that let you play with making cheese, especially hands-on,” says Harfman. “Naomi is so passionate about what she does, she fits right in here at Oliver Twist.” Tickets are available through the wine shop and soon-to-be new website.

One of the perks of writing about wine in the Okanagan Valley — other than the fabulous wine tastings — is the chance to take in the gorgeous vistas. Adega on 45th Estate Winery is home to one of the most impressive vistas out there. There are stunning lake views, the vineyard and surrounding mountains. Visitors just can’t get enough of the wine or the picturesque setting. It’s the kind of experience that epitomizes this region. Rosé Adega’s Rosé is a versatile wine that shifts beautifully through the seasons.

A Merlot Viognier blend, it’s darker in colour than most, almost resembling a Pinot Noir. It’s a characteristic that wine lovers adore. It’s off-dry with inviting hints of red berries and fragrant aromas of raspberry, cherry and blackcurrants. Try it with Mexican or Italian food. Pair it with Netflix and a charcuterie platter for the perfect at-home Friday night. Or add frozen raspberries to create a great sangria. Port Adega’s port is made with Merlot and fortified with high spirits, which makes an ideal after-dinner drink. Sip it chilled or at room temperature. Pair with chocolate of all kinds. Think chewy brownies, dark chocolate pots de crème, rich chocolate port bundt cake. A great addition to baking, it also gives savoury foods a dynamic lift. It’s the secret ingredient in one regular customer’s dressing for his spinach and pine nut salad. Imagine anise, spice and lots of ripe fruits of plum, blackcurrant. Hours and Tasting Fees These marvellous wines are only available at the winery so visit soon to avoid disappointment — Adega wines are very popular. The tasting room is open 10 am to 5 pm, seven days a week during the warmer months. In lieu of tasting fees the winery is accepting donations for BC Children’s Hospital and Ronald Macdonald House. Wine and charity — a perfect pairing.

SPIRIT RIDGE: A NEW CHAPTER UNFOLDS AT THIS UNIQUE RESORT LESLEY BUXTON

Spirit Ridge Resort is the kind of place where stories begin. Perhaps it’s the history. After all, it’s located in the ancient home of the Osoyoos Indian Band, a place steeped in culture, art and tradition. Maybe it’s the magic of the landscape, the grandeur of the Okanagan Range, the flawless blue of Osoyoos Lake, or the surrounding patchwork of grasslands and shrubs. Perhaps it’s the possibility for adventure — the world-class golf, the awardwinning cultural centre, a spa and the first indigenous owned winery in the country, and all of it within walking distance. No matter the reason, one thing is certain, this is a place where people write their own stories. Welcome Chef Murray McDonald The newest character in the Spirit Ridge’s story is Executive Chef Murray McDonald. He’s the talent behind the reconceptualization of the resort’s two restaurants. The gifted Newfoundlander (who decided as a teenager to become a chef so he could travel the world) has cooked in kitchens of all kinds across the globe. He was the founding executive chef of the renowned Fogo Island Inn. Under his influence, the luxury destination resort was ranked in the Top 50 Restaurants in Canada, World’s 50 Best by Diners Club Discovery Series and #3 Best New Restaurant by enRoute Magazine.

MARCH/APRIL 2019

An Indigenous Culinary Experience While working at the inn, Chef McDonald became intrigued by indigenous Labrador cuisine and foraging. It’s a passion that drives him still. His vision for the resort’s restaurants is a menu inspired by the Okanagan people’s concept of the Four Food Chiefs: Skimxist (Bear), Ntytikxw (Salmon), Speetlum (Bitterroot) and Seeya (Saskatoon). It’s a philosophy that’s powered by the seasons. It’s more than farm-to-table. It’s about the bounty of the land and forging homegrown flavours. Think hints of local sage, juniper and rose hip. Though his vision is sumptuous, Chef McDonald wants people to feel comfortable in his restaurants, and think of it as if “you’re dining at our house,” he says. The restaurants will transition over the upcoming months. Chef McDonald is actively involved with the Indigenous Tourism Association of Canada (ITAC) in promoting Indigenous culinary experiences across Canada. He was handpicked for his new position by Daniel Bibby, resort Executive Director and General Manager. “His skill set and passion for indigenous food is the perfect fit,” Bibby said. The idea of working in a place with such a spiritual connection to the land appeals to Chef McDonald. This is a new story for the resort; it's a creative approach that reaches into the history of the Okanagan people for inspiration and connects it with today’s visitors.

Gently flip to brown the other side. Remove to a plate and repeat with the remaining duck legs. Remove. - Add the leek discs — cut side down — season and brown. Flip and brown the other side. Remove. - Add the mushrooms with the butter. Cook until moisture comes out and then evaporates. - Add the wine and stock. Add the duck legs and leeks. - Tie the herbs into a bundle with kitchen twine and add to the pot. - Adjust seasoning. - Cover with the lid and place in the oven. Cook for 2 to 2 ½ hours until the duck is tender. - Serve over rice, polenta or buttered noodles.

A R MS T RON G /S H US WA P ARMSTRONG AND TOURISTS GO TOGETHER LIKE WINE AND CHEESE DAVID WYLIE

The agricultural community is known for its relaxed attitude and for making visitors feel right at home. “People who enjoy wine, enjoy the things we have here,” said Patti Noonan, Executive Director Armstrong Spallumcheen Chamber of Commerce & Visitor Centre. Farmers’ Market The Armstrong Visitor Centre is open all year to steer visitors in the right direction. Those wanting to sample farm fresh fruit and vegetables will find a cornucopia of colourful fare at the Armstrong Farmers’ Market, which kicks off its season in April. There are more than 30 vendors at the market, which is the longest continually running Farmers' Market in British Columbia at nearly 50 years.

Vendors make it, bake it or grow it right here in the Okanagan. The market is open every Saturday from April until October, from 8 am to noon. “If you go to the Farmers’ Market, you won’t just get your lettuce,” said Noonan. “You’ll start to talk to people and end up going for coffee somewhere. The people here make Armstrong special.” Books and More For those who love to search for treasures, Armstrong hosts a massive book sale in April. There are tens of thousands of books — and other gems — to pick through. “They have vintage books, vinyl records and more. Every day they put out something new,” said Noonan. The 27th annual Gigantic Book Sale runs April 6 to 12 from 9 am to 6 pm, and April 13 from 9 am to 4 pm at the Armstrong Spallumcheen Museum and Art Gallery. Barn Quilt Trail For those looking for something folksy, the community has BC’s first Barn Quilt Trail. For the uninitiated, barn quilts are a form of “rural graffiti” — time-honoured patterns that are hand-painted on large sheets of plywood and displayed on barns and buildings in the area.

Sometimes, tending to the vineyards can be a lonely job, but not when you’ve got helpers like Trouble and Newton. Marichel’s owner, Richard Roskell, spends much of his pre-spring time in the vineyards pruning and making sure the vines are ready to produce delicious grapes for the winery’s signature Syrahs and Viogniers. His furry friends love to accompany him and help out when they can. Marichel Vineyard is a small lot winery in Naramata where everything you see there is planted, designed and built by the owners. The tasting room is open noon to 5 pm, seven days a week, beginning in May. Before then, just call ahead and make an appointment. You’ll be glad you did. For more info visit marichel.ca

“RARE GEMS” HIT THE MARKET ON THE FRASER VALLEY WINE TRAIL LESLEY BUXTON

The Fraser Valley is emerging as British Columbia’s newest wine region and partners Carolyn Glazier and Darci Steffins of Capulet Properties | Angell Hasman & Associates believe the time is now for savvy industry investors to establish a Fraser Valley operation. “The Fraser Valley could be the next Napa Valley of 50 years ago, the Okanagan of 20 years ago,” Darci says. “Our local Wine Tasting Trail is growing more and more each year. Timing is everything to secure your place on it.” This new wine region, which covers Vancouver, Surrey, Richmond, Delta, Langley and Aldergrove, is producing beautifully handcrafted wines. Carolyn and Darci know the region well. It’s where they’ve raised their families, lived, worked and entertained. It’s the community they’ve lovingly served for over 25 years. They understand the lifestyle, and this gives them an edge and an authority when it comes to matching investors with the right luxury estate. The biggest advantage this wine destination boasts is its proximity to the world-class city of Vancouver and the Pacific Rim markets. It’s only a 45-minute drive to downtown and even faster by helicopter — only 13-minutes. This dynamic duo are well-equipped to lead investors in this direction. With their concierge service, they oversee every aspect of their clients’ journeys, while setting up key alliances with many industry experts. Another option is the opportunity of a second holding in the Okanagan.

VILLA DI FONTI

A prime example of this is Langley’s Township 7 Winery, which now has a winery on the Naramata Bench. These sorts of ventures give winery owners the opportunity to expand market share and cultivate important alliances, along both the Okanagan and Langley Wine Tasting Trails. The benefit of close proximity to the affluent metropolitan market of Vancouver and the flexibility to blend grape varieties in each region makes business sense. Villa Di Fonti Envision living here. The Villa Di Fonti is an award-winning estate set on 72 pristine acres, designed as an expression of the owners’ love for Tuscany and its old-world charm. Each part of this creation was carefully planned to mimic Tuscany's splendour — the rolling landscapes, the dramatic architecture and the enduring and beautiful craftsmanship. The owners were even married onsite near the 10-acre vineyard. It’s listed at $25M. Imagine what a magnificent winery it would make.
